  • This is PART ONE of Mike's Practical, Tactical Van Transformation.
    Do you have peeling paint? hail damage? chips, dents or scratches? fading or oxidized paint?
    Are you looking for fender flares for a Chevy Van? Do you have faded bumpers and want to restore the finish? Is a van wrap too expensive? Looking for a Kevlar type paint? Are you looking for a paint or coating with durability and functionality?
    Do you have a Chevy Express van or GMC van with peeling paint? There are hundreds of thousands of white Chevy & GMC vans roaming the streets with peeling paint! If you haven't noticed this already, now that we've pointed it out to you, you'll see them EVERYWHERE! Unfortunately, GM has yet to step forward to offer a recall on this obvious factory paint peeling problem on Chevy and GMC vans. Equally unfortunate, fixing peeling paint is no easy task and could cost thousands of dollars. Fixing hail damage is costly as well, not to mention that as soon as you fix it, another hail storm could pop up and you'll be right back where you started... with hail damage!
    Perhaps you want a new color on your van or an off-road look? Would you like your paint to be scratch, stain and hail resistant? How about being resistant to corrosion from road salt and rust? How about a paint with a UV protectant (UV inhibitor) that also acts as a sound deadener?
    Is there such a product? We thought about adding a wrap to the van, but not only does that cost 2 or 3 thousand dollars, it only lasts about 5 years and any peeling paint or hail damage would show right through. So there’s more time and money involved just to prep it for a wrap. We certainly didn’t want to go to the expense of repairing every little blemish and dent in order to do a professional, traditional paint job either.
    After much research and deliberation, Mike found an amazing solution that SOLVES ALL OF THESE PROBLEMS!
    It's called RAPTOR!* U-POL’s RAPTOR bed liner coating is a durable 2K polyurethane coating that provides surfaces with a protective barrier. It's a textured, protective coating that was traditionally used for truck bed liners. You've probably seen it applied to a jeep here and there and other off-road type vehicles as well. Other coatings, like Rhino Liner, Line-X, Herculiner, Durabak, Rust-Oleum, Monstaliner and paint with Kevlar (usually 4-5 grand), have similar properties. After much research on all of the bed liner choices out there, and due to RAPTOR's amazing reviews and great ratings, we chose to go with RAPTOR. And by the way, there is no rubber in RAPTOR. RAPTOR is a thick polyurethane coating, which gives it great UV stability and impact resistance without the use of additives such as rubber.
    For a product to be inexpensive (you can do your whole van in RAPTOR for about $300-500), easy to apply, a DIY product, heat, scratch, stain, UV and fade resistant, plus be a sound deadener, we couldn't be more happy with it! We wanted a matte finish and RAPTOR comes pretty close with a slight sheen. We applied RAPTOR to our camper van (see video above) and we want to share with you the how-to, DIY tips and tricks to applying U-POL RAPTOR to your van. #VanLife #StealthVan

    Fun fact: If you don't have access to a paint sprayer, this product can also be rolled on with a paint roller. Just get the rollers that are for stucco and rough surfaces.

    This is off topic but this reminds me of the story my parents used to tell. When my Dad got out of the army after WW2, there were few cars because they weren't building cars during the war years. He and my Mom bought a '39 Mercury convertible and they painted the entire car with paint brushes. They claimed it turned out great!

    This is a fantastic solution for an off-road vehicle that is subjected to the bumps and bruises that come with rough terrain. It gives the vehicle a TOUGH look as well as offering solid protection for the metal. Given the material, there is no need to worry about overspray or clear coat. It LOOKS GREAT.

    Sensible option for those who like to boondock into deep woods and brush country. Some of those tracks get pretty narrow with branches scraping along the length of your vehicle. Great protection and also a rugged look. Thanks for the info Mike.

    7:35 - I just saw in a U-Pol video that higher pressure makes it more coarse... for smoother finish, 40psi and spray closer

    I work at a bodyshop, and have sprayed this materiel in a few different applications, including the metal top for my snap on toolbox. It holds up incredibly well! Its also easy to clean, any kind of soap\cleaner\degreaser and a scrub brush cleans it very well! I've even used lacquer thinner to clean certain spills off my toolbox and it has held up. I am using it to to the bottom third or so of my Chevy G30 cargo van, I just replaced the rocker panels and fixed all the rust, but it's not quite worth spraying nice paint and will also be a work horse so this material is perfect.

    If you want a smoother finish I used a low pressure gun with the 5 foot hose between the spray gun and the canister that holds the product .The finish is like the texture of blue jean material. and I did the other parts with the shultz gun for a rougher finish. also if you paint white on white or color on same color you will use less product. example,,Black 4 door tracker 2 bottles of black, and 1 bottle of silver for the bumpers and side molding which is a foot wide both sides.This will prevent bleed through. But if you want to use a different color on a very opposite color like red on dark blue,,use a red or close to red primer

      If you want it to shine just add 1 oz of clear per bottle, Just like a single stage paint.
      Also you do not need to sand,They sell a 6 inch plastic brush that fits your buffer and it is made for the truck bed coating product. I recently purchased one on ebay for 21 dollars and did my tracker with it. run it at about 6000 rpms which most buffers you can adjust the buffer speed.

    I just did this on my '08 Express, thank you so much for the tips! I used about 2L on the rockers/bumpers and 10L on the rest of the van. After peeling off the masking tape, it was very helpful to have a little wedge shape foam brush to get all the little areas I had missed. It was quite the undertaking but well worth it. I did subarus wilderness green. Overall job was just under $500 with all materials and I have a few bottles left for some other job.

    I had a 1980 Ford F 150 whose paint peeled. I was told that during that time, the Car manufacturing companies used a water based primer and then an oil base paint. I do not know if that was true but Fords and Chevys were both peeling during that time.

    And I do love what you did..too many people are obsessed with having a glossy mirror look to their paint..my next door neighbor had a mobile detailer come over to his house and a crew of them spent about four hours on his and his sons vehicles..I don't know what the detailer charged to do four vehicles but those things were shinning in the sunlight..and then it rained that night, and the next morning they had through the mud puddles on our dirt road in order to get to their jobs..so they can make more money to pay the detailer to come out and do it all over again..am I the bad guy for laughing about that?

    I did my GMC Savana this summer and it turned out great! (peeling paint, of course.) I didn't have a booth- the driveway worked fine. There is very little overspray and the gun is very easy to control. Raptor is super forgiving compared to other spray paint. 3 days of prep, one day of actual spraying! Your video was the inspiration. (I gave up on stealth a while ago. Since I have a roof rack with storage, lights, and solar panels, I'm afraid that ship had sailed anyway.)

    Very nice. It appears you went 50 psi for the entire exterior body... was wondering what the outcome would have looked like if you went 50 psi for the trim and maybe 75 to 100 psi for the rest of the body, if it would have made that much of a difference. I would imagine a smoother finish would have also made it easier to clean (bird droppings, bug splatter, nuclear fallout... lol... etc.) Nevertheless... you sold me.

    Really,Hail,on fender flairs. I worked for a Ryno Liner Dealer and can guarentee that that product can in no way stop the paint from lifting under that product. On GM and other vehicles,they used a bad primer that caused the paint to peel,they blamed it on environmental issues but the fact was that it was in the primer. How many guys totally ignored what you said about removing all the paint down to metal on peeling paint. The fact to lightly sanded tells me that product is in no way going to properly bite into the paint. We used wire wheels in bed liners to scuff up the beds in brand new trucks so as to insure premium adhesive of the product. Thick does not make a product better by the way. I would really like to see this product on that vehicle in a year or two. I wouldnt recommend anyone doing this job at home,ever. Its best to leave this size of a job to a professional. The fact you are making small batches and mixing the paint in seperate batches is really asking for it. My review of this product is two thumbs down. Dont use it.

      scott firman well you can spend 2-3 gs and have a "professional" do it or do it your self for 500$

      Thanks for your concern Scott but this paint project is totally doable by the average person. The one main thing we regret not doing ourselves and not expressly stating in the video was TO WEAR A RESPIRATOR. Other than that, we have no regrets whatsoever. I do agree that the paint color mixing was totally on-the-fly and "asking for it" should we want to use that same exact color again as we have no color instructions to replicate it. The paint is holding up perfectly and we have been down some of the craziest back roads with heavy brush beating up and down the sides, not to mention the beach and sand on occasion too. So far, no issues at all and washing it is a breeze. I can tell you that it looks a million times better than the peeling Chevy paint look. We will be doing a video on how the paint is holding up at various stages so rest assured, we will let everyone know if there are any pitfalls to avoid.

      Backroads Vanner In the future use an electronic scale to weight the color formulas. If they weight the same--the color is the SAME.
      You can either weigh how much color you are adding, or measure the end mixed bottle. Either way, you can hit it on the head every time.

    So this guy charged you 3-500$ to do this..? This is definitely a professional paint job, I'd be surprised getting it done for this cheap, or is that just materials? Sounds durable, but I'm guessing you won't ever be using a sponge to clean your car, or a rag, or anything soft, pressure washer here you come!

    Hanging the respirator around the neck onto the chest makes it very effective for not breathing the fumes. Placing safety glasses on top of your head is best for protecting your eyes.

    You are making a video about DIY Painting and you are getting it done by a professional. Then you send people to your website to buy the products that give you a commission. Very misleading

    • @indyoutsider
      @indyoutsider 6 лет назад +2

      3dmixer Hey I think I could do it myself after watching that. Yeah he had a pro do it but I got guys too. just not in painting. I don't feel mislead. I just wondered how those hinges on the doors worked after that thick bumpy coat of paint was sprayed in there.

    • @3dmixer552
      @3dmixer552 6 лет назад +1

      Sure, I could do it myself as well as have done spraying a few times before, and sure anybody can spay the paint on the van or car but god sake it's not a DIY thing. So in that sense, it is misleading. Secondly, I would never spray raptor on the bodywork.
