  • With the latest technology these days, window tint / window film is so much more than a privacy screen or shade screen. Today's window films not only provide privacy and shade, but they also provide UV rejection, infrared rejection and solar energy dissipation. This means a cooler van interior, a cooler YOU, better skin protection and better fuel economy. This heat rejection film in the lightest of shades means that you can put this window film on your windshield, if legal in your state. That's huge!
When it comes to van life, whether you travel in your van or live in your van, you'll want to address a commonly overlooked area when it comes to insulating your van... your windows! So what does a van owner apply or install to help insulate van windows? Think WINDOW TINT... but not that same old window tint from years past... it's the newest in technology and it's called WINDOW FILM!
After learning about the "best of the best" in window film & window tint from our friend and window tint expert Bob of D&D Window Tint in Arlington, Texas, we chose a window film product made by XPEL. Their XPEL PRIME XR line uses nano-ceramic particle technology that filters and blocks 99 percent of the sun’s UV rays AND more than 80% of the sun's heat and infrared radiation, "making it more effective than traditional ceramic, metalized or dyed films." By blocking the sun's infrared radiation, your van is kept cooler. And unlike traditional metalized window films, the XPEL PRIME XR line does not interfere with radio, cellular or bluetooth signals.
You likely wear sun screen on your skin... probably 30 SPF or maybe even 50 SPF. Well, XPEL PRIME XR window film provides a whopping SPF 1,000 - this means it blocks 99% of harmful UV rays! The sun's rays can penetrate a regular window and reach your skin and the interior of your van. Not only will adding this window film protect your van's interior, it will ALSO PROTECT YOUR SKIN from the damaging effects of the sun's harmful UV rays that can lead to numerous skin cancers, premature aging and skin cell damage.
And you can get all of the above benefits without black or illegal super dark window tint! With today's advanced technology, even the lightest shades in the XPEL PRIME XR line (like the XPEL PRIME XR 70) provide the maximum heat rejection. This heat rejection film in the lightest of shades means that you can put this window film on your windshield, if legal in your state. That's huge! Why? Because your windshield is the largest unprotected area in your van.
WINDOW TINT / WINDOW FILM PRODUCTS THAT WE INSTALLED ON OUR CAMPER VAN:
Windshield: XPEL PRIME XR 70 (plus a visor in a darker tint - check your state's laws on allowed shades and allowed height of visors)
Front Cabin Side Windows: XPEL PRIME XR 35
Cabin sides and rear windows: XPEL PRIME XR 5

D&D also specializes in installation of XPEL Ultimate paint protection film (vehicle wrap) cutting edge remote start, security and GPS tracking... all great additions to any camper van!

Based on this video, I made the 800 mile trip to Texas this week (5/8/19) to get all the glass on my car tinted. Bob, Amy and Kimberly were all fantastic and did an outstanding job. I highly recommend this shop for your auto tint needs. Very meticulous and great attention to detail. Thank you Bob, Amy and Kimberly.

He seems to be a pretty nice bloke! Wish we could have those kind of courteous and sympathetic professionals here in Belgium. USA seems to be on another level when it comes to communication between pros and clients. Pros in Europe charge you the same amount as anywhere else in the world but without the smile, kindness, and the attention to customers. How I wish I could live in the US sometimes. Well done Bob! Thanks for the time and efforts put in this very entertaining and interesting video !

BTU is the amount of energy needed to raise 1 pounds of water by 1 F. It's the imperial system's "equivalent" to Joules which is MASS*AREA(squared)/time(squared).
It's a measure of the amount of heat. 1 BTU is 1055 Joules.

J Doe, we use zinc based sunscreen when needed. We are very aware of ingredients in products we use and so many products are FULL of toxic ingredients. Shannan even wrote an article about this very subject last year (see livinglifeagainstthegrain.com/healthy-make-up-skin-care/every-single-lotion-potion-and-drop-of-make-up-you-wear-may-be-killing-you/). We steer clear of as many toxic ingredients as possible. However, over exposure to sun can burn the skin and can cause skin cancer. The key is balance and you have to protect your skin somehow.

Great video. Have you noticed a big difference in heat and cold for the extremes? I'd appreciate hearing. You could do a short reminder video, linking to this one, telling them the short details. No, I'm not complaining about the length. A few minute video with the results they get would lead interested parties to this. Standard advertising and good to make people aware.
I just learned about off-grid living in the last two weeks. I had heard before and was interesting, but did not realize the lifestyle, trend, and ins and outs.
I've decided to do it. I was overwhelmed for two days with all I need to do and trusting myself to put it together, but thanks to all the videos on your channel and others, I'm not overwhelmed, but excited! I figure it will take about eight months to plan, downsize and buy the vehicle I want.
I work out of the home and will be working out of my truck home. I also plan to have as many windows as I can with the design. I need bright light to work with damaged vision. This is yet another incredible must have.
I'd love to hear how much it lessens necessary air conditioning since the upgrade of tints. I wonder if winters require more heating because the tint blocks the sun. Likely, yes. Good thing most of us don't spend too much time in the cold and insulated window coverings can help.
Thanks for your great videos. They are very helpful.

From outside you wouldn't even know that there is tinting on the windshield and since I asked them to use the same product on the two cab doors, I don't expect to be bothered by the cops in California where I'm from. The important thing is the film with the least amount of tint provides the most heat reduction. From inside the "darkening" effect mainly just breaks the glare, and doesn't pose any driving difficulty for my older set of eyes.

Good information. Thank you. May I ask how much it cost to do your whole vehicle, including removal of the old tint?

Please tell us what it is like driving at night with the windshield treatment. Any headlight glare, loss of vision or anything else you have experienced. Good or Bad. Thanks, Taz

However I got to this video I enjoyed it. Probably my Google searches for ceramic tint. Anyway, great video but the whole reason I stuck in there was to see the front window tinted. And it wasn't there? Super secret proprietary policy prevented procedure? Good video none the less! Happy Trails!

Happy Trails Kevin! Tinting the windshield is the exact same process but the video was getting a little long so that "super secret proprietary policy" clip ended up on the cutting room's floor. LOL!! Glad you enjoyed the video, check out some of our other video's you may be just as entertained! Thanks for commenting and watching!

Most glass naturally blocks UV light. It's a property of glass. Most sunglasses are made with plastic lenses (not glass) so they need a coating to block UV light. If you sat on a beach under an untreated perfectly clear and not tinted piece of glass it would be physically impossible to get sun burned. Physics is fun.
So unless you have weird glass in your car (typical car safety glass blocks all UV light) you do not need to tint to block UV light. That aspect of the marketing for the tint was a lie.
Another fun fact, transition style glasses that turn darker when you go outside and lighter when you go inside work based on UV light. They do not trigger when you're driving unless you're opening a window to let UV light in.

Good info. You did see the meter showing the block of sun energy full spectrum - whatever he called it. It would be interesting to know if someone has had changes in the heat effect and energy use of air conditioner. It would be perceived, but would definitely be interesting to hear.

What are you talking about. Every car coming in to my shop, that hasn’t been tinted for a couple years, has obvious interior damage. My car is 11 years old with a fresh looking interior. It’s always been tinted

I was thinking the same thing all the way through the video. Nice to see someone else address the issue. You can NOT get a sun burn in a green house. Glass filters out U V rays that's also why it is used in U V sterilization rooms in the form of glasses and/or screens.

These tests can be misleading because they're not doing the testing as though it's used in the practical application. The sun is not only on for a minute, it's beating down through your windows all day long. They should let it sit there for 10 minutes so that the tint and glass or whatever it is attached to has time to heat up like it would if it was exposed to sunlight for an extended period of time. I would like to see this test done with the film sitting behind the lamp for 10 minutes and then measure the btu output so we have more realistic numbers to go by. Thanks for the video!

Hey Tyson, We can tell you what our results are in the real world tests... the first time we drove the van after putting the new tint on, which was a very sunny and hot day, we realized after 30 minutes that we forgot to put our sunglasses on! And the van stays much cooler now. Love it!
