My son Cody was in the big dump truck behind your van. His driver is the one trying to use the extinguisher on the van. Their other truck was in front of you. He was FaceTiming me to show me what was going on in real time. My word it was insane! We prayed for y’all and just was in shock to see it all happen. I’m so glad your doing ok and y’all have such a great bond of love between y’all. He just sent me this video to watch & it just broke my heart. You are fortunate to be alive, unhurt, and able to move to something bigger and better. It has made you stronger.

As a service manager in the '70s, we had many a Ford towed in with this condition - albeit not nearly totaled as yours was. Ford had a two or three inch rubber line connected to a fuel strainer that actually screwed into the carburetor. After hundreds or maybe even thousands of hours of underhood heat and time on them, they would split crack and spew raw gasoline out on the engine and usually end up on the exhaust manifold where it would light. The funny thing is, the insurance company usually paid for everything except for that $3 fuel hose! I'm very glad to see you both got out OK ... my first time here - (also an RV'r).. best wishes! Jim and Cindy in Ohio.

    • @AviationNut
      @AviationNut 2 года назад +37

They said they just went to fill up the van with fuel, it probably had a fuel leak close to the top of the tank and as soon as they filled it it probably started leaking while they were driving. The fuel tank is located exactly where the fire was. In the 90's i used to have a 1985 Ford Econoline van exactly like theirs except it was cargo instead of camper van and i had a leak where the fuel tank filler neck attached to the fuel tank so i could never fill up my van full because fuel would leak, so i would just fill up to 3/4 of the tank and it was fine as long as I didn't fill it up.

As a retired mechanic what I notice is that the amount of fire extinguisher used was more than enough to put out the fire unless you didn't turn the key off, the electric fuel pump was feeding the fire is my armchair opinion. I have put out 5 car fires in my career and this one looks to have been fed by more than just the amount of fuel that accumulated from oil leakage.

I know you're wondering how this could have happened. My guess would be that it was caused by a leaking fuel line that ignited by the exhaust system after seeing where it first started. Maybe an old cracked rubber fuel line considering its age. A lesson learned would be to always have fuel lines checked for safety on older vehicles.

This is so sad to see. Just starting my own camper trip and this reminds me of a piece of sage advice from an old mechanic. If your vehicle is EVER in the shop for more than one day, inspect every nook and cranny of the engine bay for oily rags left behind. Even if the vehicle is in for a brake job. If the hood is up a rag may be left behind. Not saying that is the cause of this particular fire, but when a mechanic job spans multiple days, even the most conscientious mechanic can forget a rag. That alone could cause a fire like this. Even the best mechanics are still human. And the worst might leave a loose bolt which will result in a future component failure, but not a fire. Glad you both got out safely. Good luck with the next van.
Edit; I just remembered a personal incident working on windshield wiper arms on a friends car many years ago. Removed the plastic cover and found a very old dried slice of pizza.

My husband's 18 wheeler caught on fire and it spread to his trailer(full of cardboard) all destroyed. He had about $6K in personal contents. We still remember things he had now that burned. Things can be replaced and people can't. So glad you are safe.

I’m so sorry. Even though everyone is safe this is still a tragedy.
This only increases my Bad Mechanic vibes. I’m sure there will be no way to truly know what happened, but having just had it in the shop makes me suspicious.

I was thinking that it's probably the LPG/propane tank and whether or not they'd turned it off before driving. But it could be, as you say, the work of the mechanic.

I was thinking the exact same thing, van was ok since 1988, take it to camping world and it catches on fire. I would never take my RV to camping world, they have a very bad reputation.

I've had a few too many bad mechanic experiences, so that's what I think too. My friend took his car in to be serviced, he got it back and he and I went to get something to eat, and it caught fire on the drive. These kinds of things happen - good mechanics are very, very hard to find, ones that don't take shortcuts and do things improperly to get the vehicle out the door. The fact that it took their mechanic three weeks just to fix up an old vehicle is really suspicious. I'd go back to that mechanic and confront them if I were them.

Confrontation’s don’t work. You need to sue the mechanic for the prize of a new one, plus, plus. You could of died in there.

This exact same thing happened to my sist two years ago she had been living in her van for 4 months and one day it just burst into flames she said by the time she got out and ran to the back to make sure her friend and her dog could get out the drivers seat was already completely engulfed. It's so scary but I'm glad you guys are alright! And so sorry you had to experience this

I can't begin to imagine how you felt in that moment or even now. Sending you so many hugs and wishing better things to come your way! I'm glad people were kind and EMS was wonderful and professional. And I'm so happy you have Eric and Allison and you aren't alone during this insane moment.

Wow, I've watched you guys for the first time and am so glad that you made it safely out of this situation. It's so beautiful to see how you are processing this and how you connect to gratitude. This must have been quite a traumatic experience. Take good care of your bodies now. The body sometimes is slower in processing things than the mind. Focus on self-care now, so that your body can come back to feeling fully safe and grounded again! Please, reach out in case you notice some of that energy trapped in your body! Happy to help!

I've been subscribed since just before this incident. I'm watching again in April 2023. I'm crying just as much. You two are such an absolute delight. Your channel is definitely one of my faves.
At this point, you recently had the other scare of your baby's delivery.
God bless and protect you and Noah in your new life adventures.

We're heartbroken for you both. Seeing the footage of Frank brought a tear to my eye. That said we're so pleased to see you both unharmed. We live in our van and your video has prompted a talk about our response to a fire, so thank you for that. Love and best wishes to you both. Looking forward to seeing you both bounce back as I'm sure you will. xx
