I have been fascinated by stealth vandwelling since 2007. I have seen hundreds of van builds looking for ideas to set mine up. Yours is by far the best yet! You have done a remarkably good job! Neatness counts with me because I hate clutter. Clutter and sloppy workmanship stresses me out...lol. Your attention to details does not go unnoticed by me. All I can say is WOW!!! Thanks for sharing your very neat and clever ideas.
+stringbender57 WOW, thank you for the awesome comments! I appreciate you noticing the small details that do usually go unnoticed! Please stay tuned - more coming your way soon!
+Dan Travels Completely agree. Very well laid out, very simple, but still affords flexibility and also future "upgradeability". Well done Backroads Vanner :-)
I love how clean and organized your van is. I've seen a lot of vans and they are just loaded with all kinds of stuff where it looks like an old collector's museum.
I have been doing this since kids were born and watching your videos makes me feel like a piker! The kids are older and don't see the romance for campin w/ the old man in his truck but i still enjoy tweeking the setup. Thanks for all the great info and ideas.
WOW.... You easily blow away all the other van-related videos - by far - and thank you for the tour! I'm retiring early in a year and a half and just purchased a very low mileage 1994 G20 hi-top conversion van (my 3rd) to tour the country. I couldn't decide whether to keep my electric rear bench seat that converts to a bed or convert to the set up you have with 2 sofas that face each other and converts to a bed. MUCH more usable storage your way! The only thing that would hold me back from this would be the exquisite fabrication of the cushions - who did THAT? Also, That screen idea for the front and back should earn you a nomination for a Nobel Prize. Finally, I'm looking for a cabinet that'll hold a microwave, a single burner, small sink and a small fridge. I'm not good with wood, only mechanical stuff... Do you know of anyone that builds such a cabinet? If I make it it'll come out looking gross instead of the beautifully finished piece you ended up with! Thanks again, and I'll certainly be watching!!! (I subscribed 3 minutes into your video!)
+seanoleary1979 Wow Sean, thank you so much for the AWESOME comments! Congratulations on your upcoming retirement. The bench seats like my configuration definitely give you much more versatility and storage capacity. As far as the cushions go, it's really not too difficult (I'll do a video on this soon).. but you can cut the foam to fit, buy some fabric and take it to a local upholstery shop. Also, thank you for the AWESOME comment about the screens. I don't think they have a van screen category in the Nobel Prize... lol. As for your cabinets, if you get the dimensions of the appliances you want to install, you could get a local carpenter to build you a really nice cabinet on site. Many custom cabinet builders will come to you and measure for you. THANKS FOR SUBSCRIBING!!
Probably the best DIY conversion I've seen to date. Lots of well-thought out ideas, and with solid craftsmanship to boot. That's rare on so many of these videos. The side-door screens are pure genius. I came here looking for ideas for a cargo trailer toyhauler conversion. I'm now a new subscriber. Thanks for posting this.
You are living my dream! Currently have my eye on a (1) owner GMC extended work van with high top roof and all rack/tool shelves already removed! Also, has all oil change records/complete record of all maintenance performed on the Van!:) It has the very reliable 4.3 Vortex V-6 and because it is a GMC, it has the stronger springs and suspension system. Our goal is to be "we are building an airplane frame of mind" in reference to being weight conscious. Our heaviest items will be water and off grid battery bank. Making sure that all tires will be all terrain and nitrogen filled. The back will be completely modular and most power will come from the batttery bank, which will be recharged from roof mounted solar panels and wind turbine generator. May even add a stronger alternator, so that it too can charge the battery bank while driving. Goal is to have single stand up shower, compact fridge, 2-burner stove, regular a/c plugs, usb plugs, etc. On demand water heater for night time use will be a must, as well as a water filtration system. Thank you for sharing!
I’ve seen countless videos from cheaprv living and while some are well done yours is easily the best I’ve come across. Love how you created your bed/couch/storage area. So creative and no clutter. Man I hate clutter 😵💫😆. Thanks for sharing !!!
I can’t say THANK YOU enough! This video is exactly what I’ve needed! I’ve dreamed of converting a Ford 15 passenger van into a “camper” like this and this AMAZING video really gave me a lot of great ideas! This is exactly what my wife, our little boy and I need! Thank you and god bless!
I have been watching stealth camping videos for 6 months or so. I am amazed with how much detail and nuts and bolts information you give in one video. You give practical advice you have picked up over the years. But you are going to make peoples lives camping so much easier. Add your mix of being able to work with your hands and make alot of your own needed equipment such as the backup camera, custom window screen, room darkeners. Just fantastic. Can't wait to watch some other videos. Although not sure if it is funny or annoying when you laugh at your own silly jokes so much. Guess it is funny. Thanks for making your videos.
Can i just say that you are an excellent host. I really enjoyed watching your video and about to look for more of them to watch. Very informative and I love the van. Keep up the excellent work.
+Anthony Matthews Thanks so much Anthony! Your comments mean a lot to us. We really appreciate that you took the time to comment. Hope you enjoy the other videos. We are just getting started and have much more coming! And thanks for subscribing!!!
I have watched a lot of vids but I relate to your style and open concept. I have just bought a express 2020 extended van that I have rigged to pull my 13 foot v nose cargo van that i am customizing to work as a combo unit with the van. Or the van will be a stand alone unit when needed. I just did a cross Canada trip to try it out and I love it. After 40 years of wildcrafting, sleeping in tents and the back of pickups this is a dream to me. I need to learn more about insulating and wiring the van before I start everything else. You have given me some awesome ideas and I can now see light at the end of the tunnel. Thx so much for that.
I want to thank you for your videos! You were one of the first people to inspire me to build a camper van that I am going to live in and travel the U.S. It has been months since I first saw your video but I just bought the van, finally! It's a 1998 Ford E350 Extended model with a bubble top. I'm actually starting on it tomorrow and I can't wait so thanks again!
That is so awesome Kent! We love to hear that! Please share your van project photos with us on our Facebook page at facebook.com/backroadsvanner/ and let us know how life on the road goes for you. We're glad you found our channel.
Holy cow! I've watched more van build videos than I can remember, but yours is the best by far. I've yet to see one as clean, as well designed, or as just well built! This is amazing and I just wish I could do the electrical work like you have so I could build something similar. Great job!

Sportsmanship, craftsmanship, this video is timeless with energy sustainability and safety. I have two other friends just to begin to recommend, they will subscribe, as this has epic and historic and transparent suggestions at every level. Breathtaking ownership pride.
THANK YOU FOR ALLOWING ME TO VIEW YOUR VAN PRESENTATION WAS FABULOUS. ENJOYED EVERY MINUTE OF IT, I AM SO ITCHING INTO DOING SOMETHING LIKE THAT IN THE FUTURE. AND IT'S LIKE YOU SAID, IF MONEY IS AN ISSUE JUST THROW A MATTRESS IN THE BACK AND HIT THE ROAD.. THANX FRIEND
+lumpilulu Thank you so much! I made another video about the screens only - you can see it here: ruclips.net/video/hSd9CAirR20/видео.html Appreciate your comments! Thanks for watching!
WOW ! Great design, Great craftsmanship, and a lot of usable ideas with zero useless knickknacks. This is also an example of a very well done video. Lighting, sound editing. point of view, all well done and very enjoyable. Thanks for sharing your ideas.
OMGOODNESS! You're so smart. You've thought of and created so many unique things. I hope you've applied for patents. Thank you for this great informative video. I hope your traveling is safe and fun.
That looks like one of those Chevrolet police vans. If I was ever going to do something like that, I would get either a Cheverolet Express or Ford E350 police van and convert it. Police porse vehicles have higher capacity alternators, so you can run a lot more electrical stuff off them.
I have watched a gazillion van build videos and by far this is the best of them all! I love your screening and canopy and how you do not use wood for everything.
+Manuel Reyes Thanks Manual. I assume you mean customizing your van regardless of budget.... and I wholeheartedly believe that. If everyone waited until they had enough money to do every possible thing they want to do with their van, it likely wouldn't ever get started. The key is to get out there and enjoy it! Thanks so much for watching!
+Derek Holcomb Thank you Derek! We really appreciate your comments and that you took the time to write them .. and thanks for watching! Please stay tuned as we have more videos coming soon...
The board behind the passenger chair is a great idea, it serves in my opinion as a safety board in case of an accident you have the board to protect the passenger from anything coming towards the seat. I knew of some people who where traveling with some bakery equipment they where in an accident and the passenger got hit realy badly because all the equipment in the van rolled towards the front, they got hit with a huge mixer. So in my opinion I would leave the board or put the cage wall for both driver and passenger.

Michael Hess The two couches turn ino a bed. The backrest come down, and are placed in the middle to form a bed. I will be showing a much better description in an upcoming video. Thanks Michael!
+Backroads Vanner you bet! I wondered if a cushion would be placed on the board that slides in and out but didn't want to assume. Nice job! Stay safe in your travels!
Wow. Great van, great video. Brilliant comment about how to start out with whatever your budget can support. That's exactly where I'm at and your words give me great encouragement.
This video was so informative, you did a GREAT job on the van, and I really appreciate your willingness to share your advice, wisdom and adventures with us. Thanx.
I like the way you think. You are very clever, practical, thorough, clean & organized, and you have a good eye for aesthetic details. My sincere compliments on the van... it's a very thoughtful design from start to finish, and it seems like you really enjoy the ongoing process of crafting the ideal space for your needs and lifestyle. Thanks for the great video.
+Katie Redman Thank you for all the awesome comments Katie! We absolutely love traveling in the van, creating the ideal space for us and sharing our ideas. We have more videos in the works so please stay tuned!
Glad you clarified which drawers you were referring to, brother. Many awesome ideas, several of which will be helpful in my own d.i.y. van conversion. Love the rumble of acceleration as your van disappears in the exit clip, as well as the background music.
Wow, that was a great video..... well thought out van, and you keep the presentation interesting.... good explanation of things, and good speaking style. Good video to watch and learn from. Cheers
Hi, Just found your channel, amazing job with your van! You have many great ideas, the screen in the back and front is very usefully. I'll be checking out your other videos and following along. Take care, Tina
Incredibly awesome job on the Van and love the colors. Thank you for sharing. I can't wait to begin my van living for a year or two while I save for a small parchment of land to build a barn/shed to live in with food forest, vegan landscaping, aqua-panics green house, etc. You folks ROCK! I look forward to keeping up with all your videos. Blessings
+Falagi LG Thanks so much for your comments! You're going to love what we have coming up. We recently purchased a small farm in the country and are planning to do extensive remodeling to the small farmhouse and also plan to build a barn. We will be videoing every step of the way. Just one more step closer to our goal of simpler living. So please stay tuned!
I want this so much! I am planning to buy a van and have someone do the work for me, little by little, with a plan to get on the road by summer. Hope I can find someone locally who is as talented as you to perform the work!
+Xsyntrik Nomad Thanks Xsyntrik! If you can find a custom cabinet maker near you, they should be able to do what you want. You can also network with your local van clubs and groups. Good luck and hope you're on the road by summer!
This is probably the most practical van build out I've seen to date. The only thing I would add is some kind of inside cooking space and a hand sink of some kind. I'm looking at buying an extended E350 and incorporating your ideas! Thanks for showing what you've done!
When I get the money to buy a Cargo Van, i am going to make it into a camper van and go see the USA! Thanks for all the wonderful information. I love your idea on the window screens and the back screen. A definite plus to camping.
Michael you have really brought a level of quality that van dwelling needs..i couldn't agree more, a pleasing interior is a happy place, i recall my fathers 81 G20 cabinets fondly and stashed as many gijoes and Xmen comics as i ever needed! What a great design and great walk through! Now what i want to know is what do the guts look like?stud size? anchors in the sheet metal? because i have a sheet of birch that is ready to boogie!
+Shawn Hughes Thanks for your comments and questions Shawn! I used the frame of the van as the "studs." If the birch plywood is to build your cabinets, I would run a 1x3 across the inside top front and the inside bottom front of the cabinets and secure that to the ceiling and the floor using screws into the metal van braces or into the wood you attached to the van braces (depending on where you are attaching). Depending on the size of your cabinets and where you are placing them, if there is a metal brace behind the cabinets, I would run a 1x3 in the back of your cabinets and attach them to the metal brace using screws. For this, I use self-tapping metal screws. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching!
Your voice is reminiscent of Bob Ross, very comforting. What an innovator you truly are! I just watched this video for the first time and subscribed. Thank you kindly, Sir! Mike in Oregon
Great build. Simple, clean, and with a purpose. You mentioned the insulation on the build. Did you use something like Dynamat or reflectix aluminized stick on insulation or did you use something else like foam sheets/spray foam for curved areas and tight spaces? I definitely subscribed and am looking forward to seeing more. One of the best builds on here that I've seen!
+Silentbobz28 The short answer is: I used reflectix, fiberglass insulation and foam sheets. Stay tuned for the long answer as I plan on doing a video on this exact subject - coming very soon! Thank you for subscribing. We really appreciate you watching and we appreciate your comments.
You're a mad genius, I'm blown away at what I just watched. I'm losing my job (thankfully) at the end of the year but looking forward to buying a van and tricking it out between now and then. Just wanted to say kudos and hope to catch you down the road one day...Cheers!
+CycleCruza You can see a list of all the parts and the screen material here: www.backroadsvanner.com/all-posts/vans/our-van/video-diy-custom-bug-screens-for-your-van/ AND we have a video on making your own screens at ruclips.net/video/hSd9CAirR20/видео.html If you create screens for your van, please share your photos with us on our Facebook page at facebook.com/backroadsvanner/! We'd love to see them. THANKS for watching!
New subscriber here. Just stumbled on your van tour video and loved it! I have a 1998 Roadtrek that we camp with during the summer but always wanted to buy a cargo van to customize for fall and winter trips. Just curious if you have installed any kind of heater for yours? I have heard a lot of people favor the diesel heaters. Thanks and look forward to more videos.
Great emergency toilet, 5 gal bucket+Lid and cat litter. Excellent stackable trays are the 'Shells' soda companies use for 20 oz bottles. they are flat, 24 bottle/case sized, plastic, rugged, handles, most have very small holes in the base, which makes them very light and washable! I love 'em...as useful as milk crates!. Nice Job, looks awesome !
This video makes me want a regular cargo van like this instead of one of the expensive RVs. I also liked the jokes... lol. Thank you for showing us your van and your drawers!
+RVing LiveThe Dream Hmmm, I'll have to think on that question a bit and get back to you. I built this van 5 or 6 years ago. Thanks for the comment on the screens! Not sure if you saw this already but here's a link on our web site with info and links to the materials: www.backroadsvanner.com/all-posts/vans/our-van/video-diy-custom-bug-screens-for-your-van/ Thanks for watching!
I am a full time college student living inside of my homemade truck camper. Looking back at it I really wish I had gone with the van option. Still saving a bunch of money while I am in school. Fighting forest fires during the summer to pay for school and get a couple dollars a day from youtube for food.
+Eli Peterson ELi, that is awesome! Hopefully all this money you are saving on living expenses will equate to little-to-no student loan bills. You're living the dream! What a great way to start out in life. We wish you the best of luck and please stay in touch. Share some pics with us on Facebook once in a while at facebook.com/backroadsvanner/! We'd love to see how you are doing. Thanks for taking the time to comment. We're glad you found us.
Nice video! I especially like that your van is clean & organized. One of my pet peeves are from others who start their videos w/ "Don't mind the mess..." Well, then clean it before you start your video!! A mess doesn't impress!
+mytime istoday Lol. Trying to stay organized in a small space is a non-stop process. Thanks for your comments! We really appreciate it. Thanks for watching.
Great, honest overview of your creation. Appreciate the humor and putting something up I could even show my kids to get them excited about our build. Looking forward to updates!
+M Dean Awesome, thank you so much for the comments. Enjoy your time with your kids. I'll bet they'd love helping you make the furniture out of cardboard! Enjoy. Thanks for watching!
our first campers were all f 250's and a mattress what fun! then I scored a Club Chateu in a bone yard and used old van for new van engine swap and back out in the woods. traveled all 48 in a van.
Great video. I like your ideas. The prebuild in cardboard is great. One idea to lighten your load; use the legs from the plastic table on the bed center board, The legs might hang a bit but you delete one big flat piece. Just a suggestion. Cheers from California.
I just ran across your van build tour. My friend, this is one of the neatest van build setups I have ever seen. You gave me a few ideas for some additions on my van. I think you are quite the craftsman and you did a great job on this video. Thank you for your channel and videos. I just subbed your channel too! Travel safely!
+WannaBFree Thank you for your AWESOME comments! Glad you got some useful ideas for your van! Please keep watching, I've got lots more in the works! And thanks for subscribing!

Dan Travels I agree. I have been looking at some van videos and they are totally unorganized. This one was very organized and well put together.
I love how clean and organized your van is. I've seen a lot of vans and they are just loaded with all kinds of stuff where it looks like an old collector's museum.
Unbelievable, genius, smart, witty, ingenuitive !!! Such an inspiration.......happy camping for life !!!
You should think about marketing the screens you made.
I'd buy a set for my Econoline right now! I've watched the video on making them 10's of times and still haven't made them.

+Derek Holcomb Thank you Derek! We really appreciate your comments and that you took the time to write them .. and thanks for watching! Please stay tuned as we have more videos coming soon...

Backroads Vanner
What kind of engine does your van have? V6 or V8?
Your custom privacy / ventilation screens are really inspired. Thanks for sharing the information.
fantastic, the practicality is brilliant, and those screens, wow love it.
+Patrick Butler Thanks so much Patrick! We totally appreciate your comments!
Big RV company should hire you as a consultant. What a gift.
+starquasar1 Wow, thanks for the nice comment. If they hire me, it will cut into my travel! LOL Thanks for watching! More coming so please stay tuned!
Very cool and modeling out of cardboard first was truly genius and probably saved you tons of time and money in the long run.

Where do you sleep?
Michael Hess The two couches turn ino a bed. The backrest come down, and are placed in the middle to form a bed. I will be showing a much better description in an upcoming video. Thanks Michael!
+Backroads Vanner you bet! I wondered if a cushion would be placed on the board that slides in and out but didn't want to assume. Nice job! Stay safe in your travels!
How much did the conversion cost ? Also i will like to have my van customize and i am in TX. What will you charge to help me convert my van?
Backroads Vanner
Wow. Great van, great video. Brilliant comment about how to start out with whatever your budget can support. That's exactly where I'm at and your words give me great encouragement.
This video was so informative, you did a GREAT job on the van, and I really appreciate your willingness to share your advice, wisdom and adventures with us. Thanx.
So professional, very nice. I'm sure that's exactly what a lot of people that are into incognito campers want
Wow very impressive van! Good attention to detail! I love those custom made screens!
Thanks brican79! I show you how to make the screens in another video.
Your welcome! Okay great I can't wait to see it!

Thanks for the tutorial it was perfect! Oh and did you sew on the belting for the screen?
Yes I did! It was very easy and makes the screens very durable! Good luck!!!
SUH -WEET. Very well thought out. Thank you ever so much.
Glad you clarified which drawers you were referring to, brother. Many awesome ideas, several of which will be helpful in my own d.i.y. van conversion. Love the rumble of acceleration as your van disappears in the exit clip, as well as the background music.
Beautiful job on the van! Really gives me inspiration to get started on one myself. Awesome!
This guy is a genius! Wow. What a cool van design!
Wow, that was a great video..... well thought out van, and you keep the presentation interesting.... good explanation of things, and good speaking style. Good video to watch and learn from. Cheers
man that was the best video on turning a work van into a camper, that bug screen is a great idea. keep em coming I want to learn more, thanx.
That screen you made is excellent, good job, subbed.
+Del Lawrence Thanks so much Del!
Hi,
Just found your channel, amazing job with your van! You have many great ideas, the screen in the back and front is very usefully. I'll be checking out your other videos and following along.
Take care,
Tina
+tinabeane Hi Tina, thank you. We will have more videos coming soon. Thanks for following along!!!!
"Omg it's The Tent!".... "and his power level is over 9000!!!!!!!" 😂
When I get the money to buy a Cargo Van, i am going to make it into a camper van and go see the USA! Thanks for all the wonderful information. I love your idea on the window screens and the back screen. A definite plus to camping.
Great setup :) Your drawers !!! lol
+Jesse James Just trying to provide a little comic relief. lol. Thanks for watching!
Okay those screens are wonderful. Good humor and you made some really good suggestions.
PERFECT MAN..AND I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE WITH THE IDEA FOR A CARGO VAN. THANKS FOR SHARING BUD
+Tony Ramirez THANKS TONY! I've been vanning for over 30 years and get ready... they're coming back!
Wow! Your camper van is a lot nicer than Cycle Cruza's and/or Delirious Doughnut's van (same setup/style).
Of all the builds, I like yours the most, it's practical and ticks all the boxes.
You have thought of everything! Love the video.
Keep watching, more great ideas coming!
Can you provide dimensions of your 2 sofas
You're a mad genius, I'm blown away at what I just watched. I'm losing my job (thankfully) at the end of the year but looking forward to buying a van and tricking it out between now and then. Just wanted to say kudos and hope to catch you down the road one day...Cheers!
great vid and amazing job on that van!!!
Thank you very much!
Yes your vids are great new subsciber here.
Excellent video and thanks for making it look like the average guy could create his own space. Never hurts to prep and be ready if needed.
Wow...really like what you did..great job.. =)
+kathleen chapman Thank you Kathleen! We appreciate your comments and thanks for watching!
You have done an AWESOME job on this van. Love that you explain things and the reasons why you have done it the way you have. GREAT job
+Corey Cowen Thanks so much Corey. We appreciate your great comments! Thanks for watching!
Where did you get that screen material?
That canopy. Wow! Best I've ever seen. Going to follow your link right now.
Looove the cabinets - so clean and smooth looking. Great build.
Excellent video and excellent job on the van build. Also, it's very inspirational.
+Najja Foluke Thank you so much Najja.
You did a vantastic build
+Khu NoPie Thank you!
Khu NoPie is so
This video makes me want a regular cargo van like this instead of one of the expensive RVs. I also liked the jokes... lol. Thank you for showing us your van and your drawers!
Instead of snaps he should use magnets on the windows. Nice van, happy trails to you.
Nicely customized. Lots to learn here. Congrats.
+SubtleKnowledge Thank you! Appreciate your comments! More "How-To" videos coming so stay tuned!
Where did you get the yellow extension cord box, that looks very handy. Nice screens😎
I love your videos. The humbly intelligent way you present, your genius creations. Is a joy to watch. Thank you for sharing.

+Allan Byrne Thanks Allan!!!!
Fantastic! Explanation, description....and your sense of humor, GREAT!
cardboard pro tip

BEST VAN SETUP BY FAR MY FRIEND! very nice and yes the picnic table is practical and very due able. Subscribed
Wow, clean cut and comfortable! Wish I was as handy and knowledgeable about conversion as you! Very admirable!
+timfuneral2031 Love it! We're following in your footsteps! Thanks for commenting and watching! We appreciate it!
Great video. I like your ideas. The prebuild in cardboard is great.
One idea to lighten your load; use the legs from the plastic table on the bed center board, The legs might hang a bit but you delete one big flat piece. Just a suggestion. Cheers from California.
WOW, very impressed. So many ideas that can be adapted to Australian conditions. Thank You
Thank John! We appreciate your comments.
Well designed on every aspect. better than the high end RV's! Snap screens a good too. You're humorous too.
+global001 Thanks for the awesome comments and thanks for watching! More humorous entertainment coming soon! ;)-
I just ran across your van build tour.
