  • Okay, I know everyone's excited about Across the Spider-Verse right now. But in this video, I wanna talk about the movie that set this all up, I wanna talk about how the Spider-Verse saved animation..., I wanna talk about one of the most influential movies of the previous decade, Into the Spider-Verse.
Animation is a beautiful medium. But over the years, this medium has been slowly turning into sort of a genre. And it was around the time when animation had started becoming very generic that Into the Spider-Verse hit the theatres. And it showed what animation can be if you give it a chance to be different.
Into the Spider-Verse was one of the most beautiful looking animated movies ever made, and the crazy thing is that it looked nothing like any other 3D animated movie ever made in Hollywood. While 3D animated movies around this time was looking to be photorealistic, Spider-Verse simply wanted to be artisitc. And the more I thought about animation, I realized that art has been slowly dissapearing from western animation over the years, mainly because of how formulaic most of 3D animation looks these days. But Into the Spider-Verse brought back the joy of animation with its lovely visual language and the comic book style of animation that was just perfect for a superhero movie.
In this video I wanna compare the Spider-Verse to modern 3D animation and explore the many reasons why Spider-Verse has changed animation for the better. And also, I wanna look at some of the techniques the animators implemented inorder to create this visual masterpiece.

Loved this video essay. You hit the nail right on the head. As an artist and beginner animator, this movie means the world to me, I'm so glad that even 5 years later we're still talking about it and its influence on animation. Wonderfully done man

Thank you so much! It's lovely to hear the perspective of an artist on this topic. I think people will look back upon the Spider-Verse as the turning point in animation even years and years from now!

Fantastic video! Seeing people embrace animation as a medium and not a genre is very gratifying. The amount of work that went into this movie is mind-boggling, and seeing the affect Spider-Verse has had on the industry is very vindicating.
