Why is Interstellar the best movie experience I've had?

  • It's been almost a decade since Interstellar came out, and to this day I don't think I have watched anything like it. Don't get me wrong, there has been a lot of movies that I really enjoyed since then, but as a viewing experiene, nothing has even come close to it. So, Why is Interstellar the BEST movie experience I've had?
A movie experience is different from the movie. A movie experience includes your subjective experience of watching the movie, and this includes your emotions, and feelings and all those things that you feel during a movie, and this is often different from the objective story of the movie. So, maybe there is a bit of bias when you pick your favorite movie experience, but if you watched Interstellar at the movie theater, you'd know what the heck I'm talking about.
Watching Interstellar at the movie theater was one of the most surreal experiences that I've ever had. And I'm not even joking. Christopher Nolan's movies are generally meant to be a surreal experience, but Interstellar specifically put me in a sort of trance, that sort of captured my imagination, and once the movie ended, I just didn't know what had happened. And believe me you, I haven't felt that way ever again while watching a movie.
Concepts and music are necessary to turn a movie into a movie experience, and normally movies do one or the other quite brilliantly. But rarely do you see an amalgam of good sound design and a great concept sort of brushing off of each other to create a movie experience. And Interstellar is one of those rare movies with outstanding sound design and an incredible concept, envisoned by a great director in Christopher Nolan and a masterful composer in Hans Zimmer. And Interstellar is probaly their magnum opus. Atleast in my eyes.
And this video essay is a celebration of the wonderful movie that is Interstellar and how it became the best movie experience I've had...

I feel that Interstellar would have that place if I were only able to see it in the cinema. Sadly I was not.
In its place I would have to put Dune part 1. I had only managed to squeeze in reading about a third of the book when I sat down (I literally brought the the book into the theatre with me), but I already adored the universe. Having both some recognition of what I was seeing and yet curiosity about what was really happening and what was yet to come made the experience very moving. The basic emotional current of the Atreides family and specifically the young Duke's terrible purpose worked perfectly for me. I have a vivid memory of my elation and emotion building and building throughout the opening as scene after scene was executed to perfection in my eyes.
These auteur driven blockbusters are tailor made to create the most all encompassing experience in the cinema.

I honestly feel bad for everyone who hasn't seen this movie in IMAX. It was such an experience it was almost overwhelming. I have motion sickness and the docking scene actually triggered it to the point where I had to look away a couple times during the spinning. But I absolutely do not see that as a negative experience. It felt like I was on a ride at an amusement park. And of course the soundtrack booming in that theater was so incredible. It truly was an experience. I hope that when 2024 comes and marks the movie's 10 year anniversary, they will release it in IMAX again. I would definitely go experience that again.

I will eternaly remember that during winter 2014 when this movies came out that all movie-theaters in the area of france i was in were all showing interstellar over and over again.
I remember clearly thinking: "another one of those movies about/including space" and for me that was the same as saying that it was most probably an over-rated movie that wasn't accurate about its depiction of space entailed.
I never went to see it at the movie-theater.
the year is now 2017 during november interstellar was played on a french TV channel. so we shut the light down next to the tv and put the volume. I cried about 3 times. Yet i was amazed. both by the movie and by the soundtrack. i still regret not seeing the movies at the theater.
i have since downloaded the film and soundtrack on my phone. i have seen the movie about 10 times (it still is on hell of an adventure) and listened to the sountrack for close to 250 hours.

I watched it with my family when I came out. Both my father and I cried so hard when the father and her daughter met in the end. The music also was a cause of it, but the fact that, the two finally met after all this time was so heartwarming..but also bittersweet since the daughter was on her deathbed then. But at least they could see each other one last time.
Everything were perfect in this movie. It is rare when a movie end up with as high quality like this one did.
This is the real sci-fi what I am talking about! And I am glad I could watch it in the cinema.

And then, to my delight, Interstellar was re-released here in the first Imax Experience theatre in Chennai. So, of course, I dragged a friend of mine to watch it again.
