  • Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is amazing, and it is easily one of the best movies of 2022. And there are many reasons for it, but in this video essay, I wanna talk about how this 'perfect scene' from Puss in Boots 2 is a masterpiece...I'm talking about the 'The tavern scene' where they introduce the antagonist of the movie.
    Every movie needs a hook, a hook pulls us into the movie, and it sets the pace for the whole movie. So, it is important that the hook is attractive. And in Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, the story starts off with a typical opening scene, where you see Puss in Boots celebrating his life, but I believe that this opening scene was a decoy, because the this movie actually begins when Puss in Boots wakes up at the doctor's place. That's when the story starts to interesting, and obviously, the scene that comes after is the 'one scene' that I'm talking about.
    The scene from the tavern, or the pub scene, is one of the perfect scenes ever made in animation. And I don't say that lightly, I genuninely think that this 'one scene' alone turned Puss in Boots: The Last Wish into the perfect movie. The scene does an excellent job of stripping away the legacy and power of Puss in Boots, which contradicts the opening scene of the movie. And when we see Puss in Boots in his most vulnerable state, that's when the villain arrives, the villain being a personified version of Death. And the interaction between Puss in Boots and Death solidifies this narrative of a shift in power. And this how to introduce a villain into your story.
    There is a lot of symolism in this scene that elevates the immersion of this scene. And when Puss in Boots gets defeated by Death in this scene, we see why Death is a great villain, and the concept even makes us think twice about our life choices. And this scene is what sets the pace for the whole movie, it is the fear of death that drives Puss in Boots to the wishing star.
    And this is one of the reasons why Puss in Boots: The last wish is so good. A hook such as this intrigues the audience even more than usual, because such scenes are not normally seen in a children's movie. And at end of this scene when Puss in Boots escapes Death, it makes one wonder, how does Puss in Boots beat Death? And it was all made possible by the hook, and that's how this 'one scene' made Puss in Boots: The Last Wish into a masterpiece.

      It's really creepy when you realize that shot glass wasn't at the bar just a few seconds earlier when the chandelier candle went out, but does appear in the mirror when Puss tells his reflection that he is to good looking to die. Then we hear the whistle, and the wolf is holding the shot glass.

    I disagree about the opening, the initial fight scene with the guards and the giant establish what a powerful fighter Puss In Boots was, defeating both with ease. When Death came in and bested Puss with the same kind of ease, it put his power level in perspective. The audience is shown, not told, that Death's power was to Puss, what Puss's power what to the average person.

    Something I never hear anyone talk about in the 2 Death fights is the music.
    As an example, the first death fight starts off with the thrilling Spanish music that we commonly hear in fight scenes with Puss in Boots. Then, once Death grabs him, the music suddenly stops, and then starts again with primarily tense string instruments, conveying that the legend has fallen. These string instruments play during scenes with Death as well. And if we look at the final fight, it's similar. It starts out with the string instruments, although this time more thrilling music, and only when Puss uses the Gatito Blade does the film use the Spanish music again. It's just so cleverly made and these small details really enhance the movie

      Oh yeah! That's good analysis! Music is often a great cue in understanding the momentum in a fight.

    For me, there were three scenes from this movie which I would class as perfect
    This is one of them. The direction, the acting, the animation, the tension, the fear, it’s all perfect. I’ve seen this movie 4 times and this scene is still the most anxiety inducing scene I’ve seen in a movie not officially classed as a Horror
    Oh yeah and the other two perfect scenes for me are the panic attack scene and the entire final fight between Puss and Death from the flashbacks to when Death leaves. Those last two moments both made me cry so I did have a bigger reaction to them and thus preferred them to the bar fight ultimately. However, I still adore the bar fight in every possible way

    • @wonderescence
      @wonderescence  Год назад +5

      Yes, the final fight was actually very nicely put together, I mean the whole idea of fighting your worst fears, was made quite literal in that scene. And in the end, when the wolf says that he doesn't see that arrogant legend anymore in his eyes, it was almost an important life lesson. And the fact that death just walks away from the fight saying that they would meet again...it was perfect!

    The scene wouldn't have half of its impact without that small moment where we see blood stream down Puss' face. Taking into account how paranoid animated media can be with showing blood (with the exception of Arcane), it was really a pleasant surprise. That let me know the writers were taking this seriously.

  • @SergeyPupkoMusic

    I'd love to be a fly on the wall at the pitch meeting...
    "Yes, let's take a fairy tale character from a previously established kids' movie about a talking cat who is all but forgotten by everyone except the most hardcore of Shrek fans, and turn it into a meditation on mortality and inspire people to care more about the people around them and live a better life." Ha! Kids' movie... Yeah, right...
    On the subject of your video, I'm not into the cinematography of the whole thing because I don't know anything about it, but after listening to your explanation of how they use camera position to elevate Puss to legendary status in the opening 10 minutes to then stripping him of all his credentials in the bar scene, it makes sense. All I knew before is that it worked, because after that scene, we all understand that Puss is now on our level, he is vulnerable, he is anxious, he is confronted with his mortality, as are we all, at least the adults in the audience. But it's fascinating to see how they achieve that sympathy, which is so crucial for the rest of the movie. It was just puss being puss for an hour and 40 minutes, it would never have gotten as much praise as it did. For the majority of the movie, it's not Puss who is in the movie, it's us.

    • @wonderescence
      @wonderescence  Год назад +3

      Yes, exactly! I think the reason why it was so appealing to every age group was because it had a solid philoshophy in place, which is something that everyone will have to come to terms with at some point in their life. And the fact that they used a fairy tale character to drive that point home was quite unexpected, yet very satisfying, ingredients that makes for a great movie!

    Oh wow...this was a great analysis! Hm...if your theory holds true, wouldn't there then be nine candles in the chandelier with only one lit? For example, as per the glasses on the bar?...There are eight empty glasses and he is drinking from the 9th one. It does make sense though about the last candle going out being about death catching up to him. For me there were so may great scenes it's hard to pick favourites. Certainly the panic attack scene is right up there...probaby my second-favourite. And I loved at the end where character who had previously been antagonists competing for the same goal, actually collaborated for that same goal and worked together to destroy the wish so it would not be a temptation for anyone any more.
