- This 1998 Bayliner Capri 1850 LS old ski boat has been a hek of a project! So much rotted wood. Rotten Deck, rotten Stringers, rotten transom. We're having to do a full boat restoration!
Previous Episode: Finishing The Stringers • 1998 Bayliner Boat Res...
In Today's episode, We're cutting out wood for new deck pieces, fiberglassing the bottom of the deck with chop strand mat(CSM) and Polyester Resin. The we paint the ski locker with White Gel Coat paint without wax. DIY. Using a HVLP paint spray gun. And then we glue the deck down with thickened resin(fumed silica thickener).
Coming up in the next episode we're going to be fiberglassing over the top of the deck to waterproof it!

You have earned a subscriber on this one. I recently bought a glasstream boat. It’s really obscure 80s model, but for various reasons I decided upon it. It has extensive flooring rot. This video series will be immensely helpful when I start tearing into it soon..
Just started watching the bayliner build and wanted to say great work! I just got into boating and this is giving me some great ideas for this 96 stingray boat I’m working on or should say will be working on this spring.
Thank you for showing us all how it's done. Just bought an older Brunswick product myself and your videos make boat wood replacement a lot more approachable.
Thank you! I am glad the videos help :)
Awesome job. Quick tip:
You can put wax paper down with packing tape (shiny clear plastic stuff) over the seems between strips if you can't get wide rolls, and pre-pregnate strips of fiberglass on that surface as it won't let the resin stick to it. Then you roll your pre-preg, move it to where it needs to be and then roll out out across the surface.
This would have allowed you to do the strip that went around the inside of your ski locker cut out as one piece instead of individual pieces. It gives you a more uniform, one piece which has higher strength
When you put your mat on top of your boards and wet out, work from the inside of the board to the outside. Working from the outside, in will move any creases and air bubbles to the inside which you will then just have to push from the inside, out. It does the same for extra resin, which will not make the bond or work piece any stronger.
You also want to use a metal roller on large pieces which makes sure that you move that air, get good wet out and makes sure you have good cohesion and pushes all the resin evenly across the work and off the edges so you have as even a surface across the work. You can use a handled rolling pin wrapped with even layers of packing tape or a silicone covered one, just a little harder to clean up if you do not want to go buy metal rollers
Enjoying your vid, it will help a lot of people
Great job Zach! The floor looks great!
Just wait till you see the deck fiberglassed and painted ;)
Hey, great job so far! You have more ambition than most and this should be a rewarding build to say the least. Keep up the good work. I'm looking forward to your next video.Cheers
Thanks! i think the hardest part is behind me! feels like we're coming down the home stretch now!
Dude I've been looking all over for something like this.
Glad you found it 😂
Solid ending bro
You are the hardest working person I've ever met! Great video - LOVED the outtro! LOL Keep'em coming! :)
Lol thanks! Glad you liked the outro! 😎
Good Stuff. I will be following your channel to finish my boat I just started on ripping out the floor thats rotted. I don't know nothing about repairing boats but I'm a give a stab at it.
Awesome! I didn't know anything either when I started mine
just a quick note at 12:23 I let those first two pieces in the back cure and harden for an hour or two before I started on the middle piece, that way when I prop up the middle piece onto the back two, it doesn't move them around
Omg finally!!! You kept us waiting too long!😂
Sorry to keep you waiting! 😆 I enjoyed the holidays. And I made more progress on the boat 😎 more videos coming soon! Spoiler- the engine LIVES!
I was brought to your videos bc i am currently rebuilding a 91 bayliner capri. I have replaced a few transomes before but i have never done stringers and everything else. Well after fiberglassing in my stringers today i just want to say i have a new found respect for you. Lol. You made the fiberglass work look easy but its not. My body hurts! 😂 keep up the good work! Cant wait for the next video!!!
@@justintemplin3497 lol! I think you just made my day! I couldn't agree more, I confess it is some of the most difficult work I've ever done
Great work Zach. Your rebuilding this boat brings back Memories of my dad rebuilding our Cris Craft 28' cabin Cruiser. I do have question. what are the components to the peanut butter mixture. I missed that when you said what it is. I am working on 89 grass port. Just like yours I have to replace all the wood floors and seats. Major rot. I hope I can do just as good of a job as you did. thanks for videos they really help
Ron
Resin, chop strands, and filler (fumed silica, saw dust, baking flour, etc)
What plywood did u use for the flooring.?
What resin did you use for peanut butter? Im about to order epoxy is it worth the extra cost?
What size plywood did you use and what did you use to waterproof it
What kinda glue did you use to put down the boards?
Hey Zach. I am doing a floor replacement project on my Bayliner. What epoxy resin did you use, and how much did take to cover the whole floor/fill gaps? I just ordered a 1gal epoxy resin w/ fast hardener kit from Total Boat to get started.
Thanks, your videos are super helpful!
On the deck I used probably close to 3 gallons of polyester resin and 1 to 2 of white gel coat
What size plywood did you use for the deck and what type?
Nice but no screws ?
Another question for the master boat builder! How much Prestec 27x1 did you mix in with the gel coat? Like for a quart of gel coat? Please help!
65/35 gel coat/27x1
I emailed you some details
And fiberglass sheets
What size plywood you used
Just curious but how much resin did you you for the boat.
I wanna know too
Hi Zach! I'm currently restoring a 1998 Bayliner Capri 2050 LS which is basically the same model as yours. I noticed when you were installing the deck in the back, there had to be spacers between the hull and the deck because the hull does not go straight across. Can you tell me how you compensated to keep the deck even? I'm having the same issue with my Capri. It looks like you were using the pink foam sheathing as the spacer, but I can't be sure because it went by too fast.
Hi Don, yes, I was using pink foam board to compensate. I would even suggest giving those 2 back corner pieces a slight tilt inwards to help water flow towards the bilge. I've notice water can sit and mold in a corner on mine when not parked on perfectly level ground
@@ZachsGarage1 Thank you sir!
is the stringers pine or hard wood I've just my self a boat I'm having to do the floor as there is no floor
I used plywood for the stringers, i presume is pine.
Do you buy pre-treated plywood or just regular 3/4" plywood and just put resin on it?
Just regular
@@ZachsGarage1 Thanks Zach, learned a lot watching your rebuild. I am going to start the same thing on a 1988 Bayliner Capri.
What glue did you use to glue the plywood down
Polyester resin with chopped fibers and fumed silica. Aka "peanut butter" you could use PL glue too
Total cost ??
Great video, did you use normal plywood or marine?
Normal 🤠
@@ZachsGarage1 thanks
Can you please send the link to the resin as well as the peanut butter?
@@carlosaugust1973 Sure, Resin: amzn.to/3miGY7A (affiliate link)
and the peanut butter is just the resin with chopped fibers and filler(fumed silica, flour, saw dust, etc.) added
chopped fibers: amzn.to/2SJao4d (affiliate link)
@@ZachsGarage1 one last question, will Total Boat Polyester Structural Repair putty work similar to peanut butter?
what do you use to glue the wood?
For this part I just used thickened resin
Hey man how do I make a template of the floor so I can draw it on the plywood. And cut with the jigsaw?
Measure the width at the widest and narrowest points
@@ZachsGarage1 excellent!
@@ZachsGarage1 also.... What was the easiest way to cut the floor out of the boat... using a grinder? My grinder seems to be struggling a bit on the hard parts of the fiberglass
@@joeydrumstix a combination of the angle grinder and reciprocating saw
What size ply did you use?
5/8" for the deck, made it very solid
Fire your help !!
Where did you get the roll of fiberglass
Sherfab.com link in the video description
Is there a link for it an why glue it instead of using screws
@@carlchason6146 I included the links in the video description. You can do screws too. I chose not to do there wouldn't be any holes for water to leak down through. If you fiberglass on top of the holes or fill them in with silicone it shouldn't be be a problem
Ok thanks for all your help
What are you calling peanut butter the reisen
yes, thickened resin
Use the cardboard and washer truck next time
Why don't you show how hard is is taking out the old ???
😄 I do! You need to watch from the beginning of the project: ruclips.net/p/PLzb8shJPI4lfuxW2TL4UEi1cVL8gYCdUS
are you using 3/4 marine ply ????
I think I used 5/8" regular ply
I don't know how much you paid for this boat, but I would have taken my time to clear everything in the hull ,get marine ply, and lots of fiber clothes different grades, rebuilt it on my own time. Its saddens me to see you neglect lots of things to make this boat last .
Thanks for the comment! Not sure if you watched the rest of my videos, but I have taken a lot of steps to make this boat last, and I'm excited to share how the boat holds up in the years go come
@@ZachsGarage1 I'm sure you could have laminated all the bulkhead, before installing them, but I only see you applying epoxy only, this will not protect the timber in the long run.
@@ezjuliani I agree, I could have before installing them, and resin alone is not enough protection in my opinion too. That's why I fiber-glassed them after installing them in the boat
Having never done this before, I thought he was pretty thorough. I'm curious to know what you think he neglected doing.
Why aren't you showing us how you measured the floor pieces? ...and uhh...I know a future politician when I see one. Or Used Car Salesman. Same thing. Great ending to this video.
That's some of the worst music I've ever heard
what is the peanut butter glue?
