  • How to Write and Artist Statement & Bio
Art Practise 101 shall we say, we all have to do it so I thought maybe this week beginning the conversation about how writing an artists statement helps professional life as an artist!
This week I've been doing ‘Art Admin’ websites/ applications etc. the usual, and, thought it an important topic to include in Art Life this week as it’s something we all as artists should do to keep up-to-date in how we present ourselves to the art world!
Jackson’s have on www.jacksonsart.com summed it up perfectly here:
What is an Artist Statement? A focussed description of the artists work and practice, written in the first person eg. “I”, “My”, “Our”.
What is an Artist Statement for? An Artist Statement communicates the main concerns within your practice. You might consider it a shortcut to understanding what your artwork is about ...What is an Artist Biography? A concise description of the artist, written in the third person eg. “He”, “She”, “They”. What is an Artist Bio for? An Artist Biography presents facts about your development as an artist. It presents a context for your work.
Georgia O’Keeffe said: “I have but one desire as a painter - that is to paint what I see, as I see it, in my own way..” I need to be this concise in my statement on www.jessoliver.co.uk/about , maybe in making this episode I can refine and update my words!
If you’re interested in learning about professional artists statements here is a good link or two:

If you’re writing a statement I hope this helps, if you haven’t and after watching this do then I count this weeks ‘admin’ focus as a WIN!
Thanks for watching and see you every Monday for new studio life as a full time artists insights!

Big thumbs up for everything you are doing, especially now you are taking us on a journey that is often not seen and is often overlooked. The Business side! Congratulations on your upcoming solo exhibition. Document every moment of it to let people see and learn. Keep up the good work you are an inspiration to many. By the way because of your channel and that of Stuart Davies, after 30 years I have started to paint again. Bit rusty and I don't mean the colours I'm using (actually I like the colour of rust so many different tones.) but I am enjoying the journey again. Thank you.

Thank you for sharing this side of an artists process and making it simple and comprehensive. I will definitely be referring back to this video! Thank you also for your honesty in sharing how you have tackled the written pieces over the years and the 'humble' issue. I resonate with this and will make it easier for me to start writing. Congratulations on your solo show! Looking forward to watching and learning from your journey.

Thank you for your always inspiring and honest videos. I was hoping that you might go a bit further when you talked about your struggle with labels and how easy it is to be placed in a category, whether it is "kitchy" or "feminine" or, you didn't mention this one, but here it is: "sentimental". Is it because we are realistic landscape artists, which seems to be out-of-fashion, that we get pigeonholed? Or has that more to do with the way we paint? Perhaps our style is not expressionistic enough? What provides the "freshness" you began to work toward? What are some examples of work that truly is kitchy or sentimental or feminine/masculine?

Sentiment and the kitch/perhaps “overtly feminine” aesthetics might be a symptom of a contemporary art world dominated by the male gaze historically?
Or…Maybe beauty and freshness in nature is unfashionable as global warming makes pure and positive interpretation in paint an illusion?
Or… Impressionism vs. Romanticism can influence the context of how we view and read a landscape artwork?
Taste is constantly changing- for me personally the key is authenticity and the “alchemy” of my approach to bodily mark making and gesture. It’s a vast territory to navigate professionally and personally! As long as we see the influences and context of where our work sits that’s the best advantage we can give our work!! Thanks Colleen!

eer if anyone is reading this, please go to her website!!! 4:15 😅is one big reason why we keep watching. Your website is awesome. I love words like 'elemental' and 'ephemeral'! I'd assume that's what people who are interested in your art would want to read. I'm not currently writing an artist's bio or statement, but I have done so in the past for grants. But it is with a certain intention to return to this video when I do get to it. It is also interesting to learn yet another layer of your work that for some reason surprises me; intended profundity. It shouldn't surprise me, because it is evident in your videos. Your subject matter and your personality are almost juxtaposed. One is scholarly, in-depth while the other is care-free (and bold). I am confident that your work is going to fetch six figures and more...

I always find it really hard to write about myself, I think it's really easy to minimise your own achievements. I feel like we're quite socialised to be humble to the point of doing ourselves a disservice, and perhaps because we get so wrapped up in what we're doing it doesn't seem that impressive to us. I work in a technical field and did a PhD in astrophysics and I always find myself wincing when I write about it in a professional setting as I feel as though I'm bragging. For a long time when people asked me what I did and I said that I was doing a PhD I always followed it up with "it can't be that hard/impressive if I can do it" which is a ridiculous thing to say. But I think sometimes we just need to acknowledge that actually we're all pretty impressive in our own ways and we've all worked hard and for a long time to hone our respective crafts. :) Same thing for asking for a salary/price of a painting - knowing your worth is really hard!

Hi from Whitefish Montana USA. Absolutely admire your style and works of art. It's been awesome to view every week. Isn't it dangerous to work on a painting when mounted inside a frame....lol. Looking forward to your next works.😉

Hi Jess! This video has come at an opportune time, while I am struggling with writing an artist statement! I'm doing an art fair in May so do have some time, but have never really written about why I paint what I do! It's also the first time I'm showing my personal body of painting (usually show my Illustrative work) and have no idea how to say "i paint this because ????" 😆🤦🏽‍♀️

Good luck for your art fair in May, how exciting! I understand exactly what you mean its really hard to be objective about your work when speaking about your work. I have found a spider diagram helps get all your thoughts down on paper and try the links in the description for any more ideas. Thanks for watching Arati!
