Thanks for sharing. I've done quite a few residencies over the years and my process has evolved more or less along the lines you suggest. As you say, research to find the places that are a good fit for you is important. Also, as with most things in the writing/art business, remember that rejection is part of the process. One should try not to take it personally and then keep at it. Perseverance is key!

why an artist would need a residency?

I’ve done a couple of residencies and my work improved from the process. I don’t know why- maybe just being immersed, maybe living in a different place than the usual? Maybe not being distracted by all the stuff that would normally distract me?
