I've gotta say, I honestly like the 5 minute board the best. I definitely appreciate the time and skill that went into the 5 day board, but the simplicity of a beautiful live edge board just does it for me.
Tough call on the favorite. The five minute version would get used most frequently because of less guilt cutting into it 😊. I like the clean design of the five hour and the beautiful complexity of the five day. The five day version wins the challenge out of sheer admiration for the craftsmanship.
The 5 day one is endgrain - so won't mark up as much as the other versions. Imagine holding a handful of spaghetti, and cutting it with a knife. when you cut it on the flat/long/horizontal side, there's a lot of resistance. If you push the knife in the "end" where all the ends of spaghetti meet, the knife will fall through the bits of spaghetti. Same on an end grain cutting board but on a microscopic level - it'll take years for any "bad" scratches to build up.
@@TheMerce101 Completely agree - but as a consumer, would you want to be replacing your board every few weeks(if you want it pristine) or few months with normal use to totally ruin it, bits of wood flaking off in your food, and importantly DULLING YOUR KNIVES etc, or would you want a board that after several years of heavy use there's not a mark on it, saving you £100's on knive sharpening(or many hours if you do it yourself) for 10x the price? Honestly yes. Of the three in the thumbnail, I'd want to buy that one most. It has the perfect balance of form, aesthetic, and simplicity. The kind where I'd be proud of and comfortable with using it in case I slice any grooves into it.
Out of probably every build and video you have ever done, I have no idea why but I like the 5 hour cutting board more than anything else I have seen. Just sheer beauty!
I appreciate you showing all the screw ups. I watch videos and people make amazing stuff and it's all perfect first try and then I make stuff at home and half the time I'm like "what is wrong with my brain?" because I keep making little errors with a measurement or a cut or something. It's nice to see the honesty that mess ups are a natural part of woodworking even for someone who's a legit pro.
Really liked this video, showing the flaws and the process for correcting them is not only more entertaining, but also more instructive. Love the boards, too!
I made a wooden shelf from 3/8” redwood in junior high school and I had a piece big enough for a trivet left over. A few minutes with a wire brush and belt sander and I brought it home. The shelf went by the wayside a few years later, but my mom used that simple trivet for many years (my dad even reglued it when it split), and it was one of a few things I brought home when it was time to clean out my parents house. Sometimes the simple things are the best.
The five minute board was actually the most amazing. I was vicariously exhausted just watching you fly around your shop trying to get that one finished.
Thank you so much for messing up in your thought process and execution and then adapting/fixing on the fly. It makes me feel better knowing I'm not the only one this happens to.
This! I admire the craftsmanship but a cutting board straight from a slap has something really beautiful. I wonder how much it will warm with moisture though.
There's such an amazing depth in the 5day board because of how some of the more shaded colored squares look like they're layered under the brighter colored wood square patterns
Wow! The 5-day is the most intricate and beautiful cutting board I've ever seen. Amazing mathematical and 3-dimensional thinking and execution. God bless you.
I can absolutely appreciate the effort that went in to the 5 hr and 5 day boards. But I would definitely choose the 5 minute board. It has a rustic appeal that I cannot resist.

There's a lot to be said for the skill to do the 5 min board that I think gets over looked. Whilst the 5 day is craftsmanship, the 5 min is impressive time & work-space management skills. Respect for all three.
The 5-minute cutting board is only possible here because he has access to an amazing set of tools. You can't do it that quick without a power planer. On the top half ithe lines dieappear better. Perhaps it is just the camera angle. But it looks very nice.
He said he was having trouble matching the corners perfectly so I bet he just made a design call. I think it looks like mountains on the bottom half there. Very cool
It does looks a bit off, probably due to grain direction. But it is the only part that is actually weaving. The top part is just squares on top of square .

5 day one is awesome, i noticed there us one strip that looks like you put in opposite direction or grain orientation. It's just an amazing board, absolutely amazing.
I like this 5-5-5 format. It's quite a challenge. Here are 3 suggestions for future videos: A child's toy, a Xmas ornament for the tree, and gaming equipment. My choice for a 5-minute toy would be a rattleback made on a belt sander. For games it would be 2 dice, a backgammon board, and a complete chess set). What would you do?

I respect your dedication to perfection and creative approach to crafting unique boards. What are your next projects? Looking forward to seeing more content like this!
Love the style of video. Love it love it love it. Feels modern and engaging, whereas a lot of woodworking videos are quite dry and geared towards people that are actually making the thing and wanting directions on how to do it. This gets everyone watching, even people who have never worked with wood in their life and might continue to not to
I gotta say, I really appreciate the editing on your videos. Even at 20:43 with the “vertical” lines edit, always makes me pay extra close attention so I don’t miss little things lol.
I like the 5 minute and 5 day ones best. The 5 min one is the one that I would happily use every day, the 5 day one is the most aesthetically pleasing one but I would use it only for special occasions, as a serving board.
Five minute was the most enjoyable to watch the process, the five day was the most enjoyable result. Have to admit, I am curious to see what you'd be able to make pattern wise if you deliberately f-ed up the pattern of cuts to fill it in with different wood types and then re-cut it to make a snowflake tessellation. probably would take 10 days of glue ups, but would also probably look amazing....or tear a hole in the fabric of reality...

I want to build drums 🪘 for adults , and toys for kids,, audio speakers is something I would enjoy building as well. ….thanks for the inspiration…Tom
I hate to say it. But I think one of the strips in the 5 day board is upside down. When the whole board is shown at @33:33 the second from bottom strip looks like it’s the wrong way around. You don’t have the defined squares you do at the top because of it.
0:16 WOW, your wife is gorgeous! You have 2 fun channels that I found a month ago. I subscribed immediately after watching you guys unbox a Lowe's return pallet. I don't do any woodworking, I would never try any of it. I took woodshop in 7th grade and built a porch swing that my dad NEVER used. I got an "A" for my swing too. It was nice. that was 35 years ago.
Sounds like you're still jilted your dad never used the swing😂 maybe because he was out working and trying to provide for you. Sounds like he was also a single father
Man, each board got its own vibe! 😍 Love how you showed the differences in time, art really has its own rhythm. The 5-day one is a masterpiece but I’d probably be too scared to use it. 😂 How about a cutting board that doubles as a pizza stone next? 🍕
I made an edge-glued hickory cutting board. It is more of a butcher block than a cutting board because I keep it next to my stove and it covers virtually the entire side counter. It cost $15 for the wood, just a single 1x6x4’ board. For the steaks I cut on it, it works great. It leaves a slight hickory taste too.
Five minute board, the most hygienic...practical, functional and beautiful as cutting board...a must in any kitchen! Five hour board, handsome as a serving board or tray...would make an awesome cheese display tray... Five day board, intriguing art work...a lovely mural for an entrance or narrow wall which is also a focal wall...too busy for a cutting board, and the joints that over time may pull loose and hide pathogens...just too risky :)
End grain is both more hygienic and better for your knife. Actually, there likely isn't much difference on the hygiene front but if forced to I'd bet on that one
That 5-Day cutting board is _too_ nice. Whose going to cut anything on that? Plus, hundreds of dollars for that work of art you prop up against a kitchen wall and just enjoy looking at it. Maybe.... maybe use it as a serving tray? I can see the two other cutting boards being used though. And yes, Etsy has some sweet custom cutting boards.
@@headleshydra scratches from years of daily use would just make it more beautiful anyway, not less. It's a hell of a board, but to not use it would be a tragic waste
John, the woven cutting board was absolutely gorgeous! I even got my 18 year-old son to watch the whole video with me! Thanks for making not only the beautiful cutting board but a moment that I hope son will remember later on when video games anen't his whole world.
For a cutting board to use, The simplest one is the best. Cutting boards are a consumable in the kitchen. For wall art, Either of the other two would look good in any kitchen.
i really appreciate the work that went into the 5 days board - still i could not stand the mismatched pattern... well knowing i would never even be able to come close to this level of woodworking...
I love the 5 day one. It is a work of art and craft, taking both a lot of skill and a lot of work. I couldn't justify paying what it was worth, though, and if I did, I'd be too afraid to use it.
Love being able to see the behind the scenes of how cutting boards are actually made. I'm curious for the 5-day version, how many actual active labor hours went into it versus how much time was it sitting around to dry?
You did a really good job on all of them not gonna lie. Just for everyone trying the same, please be careful. When you’re stressing in the workshop accidents are more likely. Just be careful! :)
I like how you show your mistakes. You are hilarious and I love the content. You’re an expert and by appearances a pretty rad dude. Then again you might have me fooled
Just stumbled across this channel. Love the edits,😂also clumsy me would have lost a finger or two. I love the 5 minute cutting board but I appreciate the functionality of the 5 hour one too. Great job👏🏽
The first glue up issue should be a video on how good tightbond 3 is. Just a few drops holds that strong is a great sight to see. Love the videos John.
I know you were uncomfortable cutting & planing & jointing only after a few hours since gluing, but damn! Turned out beautifully! And I like the 5-minute board WAY more than the 5 hour one.
The five day one was amazing but I wouldn't dare use it. I actually think my favourite is the five minute one. The simplicity makes you appreciate the wood for the wood rather than the pattern standing out.
i just recently started whittling when you channel popped up in my recommended. wanted to make a necklace charm to hold a heart crystal i have to keep it from banging on tables. wanted it to look like vines and leaves but hold it in place. what i want to do is make it so the heart can flip upside-down and stay in place. that may be above my skill and tools level. but i love art channels. i do a lot of art stuff. i found don wood outside to practice it is very pretty 3 tone wood.
Is it crazy for me to think that i like the 5 min one actually the best? Its just clean & minimal plus it really shows what a beautiful pattern nature has. Yeah you can glue 20 times all over the place and the result is nice like the 5 day one but man the first one is just absolutely beautiful idk why. Plus its the best deal by far regarding time invested vs outcome.
Serving board or statement piece: 5 day, all day, obviously! Looks amazing. Daily driver: 5 hour probably. Cutting boards last a long time when cared for so the extra cost is worth it. I have no idea what the 5 day cutting board would cost to buy, but I do know that's going to be way too expensive for me to use it with a knife!
They all look amazing. The five hour one is my favorite, just because is it elegant and simple. The five hour one is actually to pretty to use!!! Wall art? The five minute one shows off the beauty of the wood and is more my skill level...lol.
You build really pretty wood boards. I go to the local plastic shop and have mine cut from white 1/2" food grade plastic. They're much cheaper, last much longer, and they're far, far more sanitary.
Use 50% denatured alcohol with the water for raising the grain. It dries faster with less heat. Works extremely well with veneer as well. It came out awesome I think.
I've gotta say, I honestly like the 5 minute board the best. I definitely appreciate the time and skill that went into the 5 day board, but the simplicity of a beautiful live edge board just does it for me.
My thoughts exactly!
yeah, i'm not a huge fan of all that glue either.

You don’t have the defined squares you do at the top because of it.
the 2 bottoms ones got flipped. r1 and r2 are flipped and rotated 180. very sad cuz it kills how i feel about it
By far, mix of quality, skill, and entertainment is unparalleled with wood working channels. Love your show
0:16 WOW, your wife is gorgeous!
Ouch. Easy bro people have feelings. My apologies if your a bot
I absolutely love the dedication for the 5 day board and its very beautiful. My personal favorite though is the 5 minute one.
If nothing else, the 5 minute board was a great ad for Mirka. It did an awesome job of cleaning up the edges really quickly.
Love that Mirka knot removal tool
I love the over all shape and looks of the 5 hour board the best. Not overly complex and distracting, but good looking.
You can see it on John’s face during the 5min board… “Why the f*** are the paper towels all the way over here”…
Man, each board got its own vibe! 😍 Love how you showed the differences in time, art really has its own rhythm. The 5-day one is a masterpiece but I’d probably be too scared to use it. 😂 How about a cutting board that doubles as a pizza stone next? 🍕
I know this wasn’t an ad for that glue but it probably should be 😂
I made an edge-glued hickory cutting board.
Beautiful work, John!
Amazing!
I would 100% use that board. Using it shows appreciation for the work put into it.

I appreciate it too much to use it, if I bought it or something similar off of Etsy.
@@headleshydra scratches from years of daily use would just make it more beautiful anyway, not less. It's a hell of a board, but to not use it would be a tragic waste
Absolute high levels of craftsmanship. It's the 5 min one that tookmy heart
You do realize that warning is misspelled at the 1:10 mark.
Warnging lmao
In de warninging
He was rushing and sprinting through it
John, the woven cutting board was absolutely gorgeous!
I saw you cut and put together those layers... and I still don't understand how that woven pattern came together. Amazing.
next time without cuts
i really appreciate the work that went into the 5 days board - still i could not stand the mismatched pattern... well knowing i would never even be able to come close to this level of woodworking...
The 5-day weave is my fave. The 5-hour is wonderful, yet elegant in its simplicity. How about making a project using decorative inlay?!
the "its so hot in here" "OHH" had me rewinding a few times. NICE WORK BOI
Wow! A Damascus wood cutting board.
Beautiful.
You did a really good job on all of them not gonna lie. Just for everyone trying the same, please be careful. When you’re stressing in the workshop accidents are more likely. Just be careful! :)
I'm back! Puke and Rally! This went through my head before it came on the screen. Lost my biscuit when it came on! Keep up the awesome work John!
I like how you show your mistakes. You are hilarious and I love the content. You’re an expert and by appearances a pretty rad dude. Then again you might have me fooled
I have been binging for about a week now after YT recommended, so glad it did!!!!
Only thing more Zen, at least in my book, than watching someone turn wood into something special is to do it yourself^^
i just recently started whittling when you channel popped up in my recommended. wanted to make a necklace charm to hold a heart crystal i have to keep it from banging on tables. wanted it to look like vines and leaves but hold it in place. what i want to do is make it so the heart can flip upside-down and stay in place. that may be above my skill and tools level. but i love art channels. i do a lot of art stuff. i found don wood outside to practice it is very pretty 3 tone wood.
Love all them. Just did my first cutting board. Glued and all !!!
All three of them look beautiful, but my favorite is the 5 minute board. I just love a natural edge.
They all look amazing. The five hour one is my favorite, just because is it elegant and simple. The five hour one is actually to pretty to use!!! Wall art? The five minute one shows off the beauty of the wood and is more my skill level...lol.
My favorite is without a doubt the 5 minutes cutting board for its simplicity and the rustic style.
I like the 5 hour best. Looks great with light color and a band and it is definitely easy on the eyes with using it.
ALL THREE ARE FANTASTIC JOHN!!! *CHEFS KISS*
