PLEIN AIR PAINTING and PAINTING CRITIQUE in HIGHBURY, LONDON

- Back In August, we hit the streets of our hood in search of subject matter to paint. Lindsey found an amazing old Victorian building and Nate picked a tree-lined street scene. We had a blast tackling some of the trickier neighborhood scenes we walk by every day. Hope you enjoy!

THANKS
A great couple of paintings. You make it look so easy ……when we know it really isn’t!
Thanks! Glad we can make it look easy because it's totally not.
I like how the two of you reflect on your paintings together, you've given compliments and and advices so you can prepare yourselves for challenges in the future. Healthy thinkig and collaboration. Thanks guys👋🏽👋🏽
Thanks Cedric!
Really interesting to hear you comment your own work and the work of the other.
It takes a lot of humility: exactly what is needed to keep learning whatever up your game you are.
It is beautiful to see you in process.
Thanks so much!
Wow this is so lovely to watch
Thanks Millie!
I like both paintings just as they are.
Thank you!
Both paintings are fantastic
Thanks!
You two are awesome! Really enjoy watching you guys. Thank you!
Thanks Sue! We appreciate the compliment
Knocked it out of the park with that one Nate. Way to go!
Thanks! It was a fun one to paint, but definitely challenging
Takes a lot of courage - and obviously in this case skills as well - to take on motifs of that nature. Results are fabulous.
Thanks so much!
Terrific-thanks Lindsey & Nate! Fun and informative. Can you share your notes on easel, Lindsay? RIM LIGHT!
Thanks so much John!! That's actually Nate's old easel that I use, so those are his notes on the bottom. At some point we'll film a closeup of them! :)
Lovely paintings.
Thanks Kathy!

Thank you for your videos they are so inspiring and great fun. I just love them❤
Thanks so much!
I thought they were very challenging subjects to take on, particularly on such a small scale, but you both did a wonderful job.
Thanks! they were definitely a challenge
Thanks so much LeBot!
Very impressive. Makes me think its time to step up my game and quit painting easy subjects out in fields and go downtown.
You have to try it! It’s hard, but really fun.
You both compliment each other so well...... lots of talent, great demo! 🎨🙏
Thanks Franco!
Thanks so much Franco!
Awesome, and I'm a watercolorist. Could I beg your indulgence Lindsey, to post that list you have stuck on your easel? I'm of the inclination that there is ALWAYS something to learn ( and usually admire) with every artist. Thank you immensely.
-What’s the point of the painting? -Make sure drawing is accurate before starting with paint -Keep shapes simplified and generalized
-Compress and simplify values
-Thin to thick, fat over lean
-Use the biggest brush you can
-Mix a ton of color
-Establish masses of local tones for entire painting
-Hit areas that will change the most first
-Don’t get caught up in detail and eliminate the unnecessary
-Don’t worry about mixing the color you see, mix the color that works
-Check painting in mirror frequently
-Step back and take breaks
-Leave undertone where it can be left
-At least one strong horizontal, vertical, diagonal
So sorry for the delay in responding! I we moved from the UK back to the US 4 months ago so it was total chaos for a while. This ewas Nate’s old easel and It’s just a guide for things to think about when plein air painting. It’s easy to get overwhelmed when you are outside painting so when you lose your way, it’s time to step back and check the sheet. Mrtheluckybucket pretty much nailed the list in his response. The list is comprised with the things Nate has found to be most important for developing a successful painting.
You nailed it! Thanks for responding. I totally missed this comment to our video.
Really enjoyed watching your process. Thank you!
Thanks for watching Sarah!
Lovely paintings as usual. Wonderful you two have each other to provide support and feedback
Thanks so much Jon!!

Thanks Deborah!
Great job guys, I think you had two tough compositions but I agree you caught the essential elements and they both turned out really nice!, Thanks again great critiques! 😊 👍

Took me a while to bump into your videos and instagrams. Glad I did eventually. Great work. Spotted the video of the visit to Richmond first. That's local for me when there are no travel restrictions.

Thanks Katy! That's actually Nate's old easel that I use, so those are his notes on the bottom. At some point we'll film a closeup of them! :)

Don’t mess with them too much!
"In drawing the hairs, you lost the cat". Henry Tonks. Perhaps more attention to the focal point. Having said that, it was nice to watch two talented artists at work.
Thanks!
