There will be SPOILERS BELOW YOU ARE SUPER WARNED Edit: Also, for some reason the Audio version is simply not finishing uploading. I've even tried rerenders etc. Hopefully this resolves soon but that's why the podcast version isn't out yet. I'll email Podbean if it still doesnt work tomorrow.
In my defence.... shit.
Hey it's not as bad as Strahd
It'll be pretty funny if RunawayRobot added Izar as a cameo in Avernus..
Does Justin win a prize for his speedrun?
Don't be too hard on yourself Merchant. You certainly telegraphed the danger and showed restraint when it came to what the Duregar did and could have done. I feel like there should be a mechanic for plan-making in DnD, some feature to make the players aware of all their resources without losing agency (its a big game and a lot to think of under stress). At the end of the day nothing prepares against cursed dice, though. Looking forward to the upcomming Underdark gladiatorial combat...
You played it straight down the line as DM and it was down to some decisions the party made and a run of bad dice rolls.
Episode 7: When banana bread goes bad, and it’s all Jon’s fault!
She should have taken the dodge action.
A little sad there was no music in this episode, it would've really fit with the heroism of our party
Music player wasn’t working for me on roll20 as it kept disconnecting :(
It was a long-tongued, sharp-tooth, skeletal-limbed Izar eater
First organic TPK I've ever seen.
Did i miss something? Why did the cleric draw crossbow fire instead of the paladin with a shield?
Mechant’s dice were on fire!
Has this campaign been discontinued? Im sad that there hasn't been an update in awhile
Owning this adventure module myself, they really screwed up the recommended level for Chapter 3 & 4.
What Wizards meant to do, and what they did are two different things.
The intent of chapter 3 was to have the characters uncover the Duergar conspiracy, and eventually find the keep, and they should be about level 5 or 6 before they step foot into the keep.
The way Wizards wrote chapter 3, they imply the above should happen, but it's written such a way that it "starts" at the keep. Stepping near the Keep triggers the possibility of skipping Chapter 3 and going straight to Chapter 4. This is compounded by the "flow chart" that says characters should start Chapter 3 at 4th or 5th level, and Chapter 4 at Level 6.
TLDR: Characters should start Chapter 3 at level 4. search for rumors & information, about the Duergar, before attempting to Find the keep. Once they do, they should level up, as they in turn have the choice of pursuing Chapter 4 or continue into the keep.
@Merchant Definitely can't use monster XP to level in this adventure or they'll never level up fast enough. ;)
can i just ask what happened to the old dnd vods? I was halfway through the black blades campaign then they disappeared
The playlist is deleted, but you can still watch the episodes from links in the subreddit (linked in the description)
I’m in the same boat, I hope they pick it back up. IWD & Avernus slap but I binged the fuck out of black blades the past few weeks and I need more lol
I really hope you continue this campaign, loved it so far.
Thyrixsyx does some of the best character work on the dnd shows, always so funny
When’s the next session been waiting for a couple of weeks and want to meet the new party
Found the Avernus Campaign then got into Icewind. Love the content! Looking to run an Icewind campaign soon first time using roll20 though!
Why did the healer tank 7 bolts lmaooo.
Really bad idea going to Sunblight at fourth level!! I am DM'ing it right now for a party. I would say bare minimum is five or you risk TPK. The next chapter that follows immediately this one starts at 6th level.
What happen to all of the old dnd on your page
Well that's one way to return... Holy shit 😱
I don't know if I'm missing something but the audio version doesn't seem to be up anywhere. Anyone know where I can find it or is it just not up yet?
@@nervedamage3097 read the comment merchant pinned and posted
Why was the dodge action. Not taken?
How nice to have a new episode! edit - Fs in chat
So when is the next episode going up. I’m fascinated to see what happens next. I rate this TPK as an 8 out of 10. Avernus with the fireball .... much lower.
I can't find episode 8.
F for the lads
Loved this episode though it was painful to see the party cut down. You fall in love with the players and characters. Hope you guys keep playing.
Been looking forward to the new episode! Perfect watch for a cold evening.
Edit: just finished watching the ep, and having gone through a similar situation recently (in Curse of Strahd), I respect the general group reaction to how the episode ended. Whatever way it continues from there, looking forward to seeing more of you guys, and this shows well the benefit of having two campaigns running alongside one another!
Nice a tko for the entire party next session should be interesting lol
The only D&D group I love more than Guildgates&Goblins is more Guildgates&Goblins
When's the next episode?
I feel like I’m in Icewind Dale with this huge ice storm coming through the Southeast United States
What an episode! Holy Duergar
Lady don't say boop around my dog and hold up your index finger. I somehow made him go crazy mad teasing him doing that
When’s the next session?? Please??
When spoken words can't be retracted.....
This was a very entertaining episode to watch. PCs made a lot of bad decisions in the thick of things (as players do sometimes.)
Once they found themselves in a bad spot, I thought for sure they would come up with a plan that used better team work. Instead it seemed like everyone was doing their own thing.
Dorothea - definitely should have dodged when stepping into the hallway. Real sacrificial moment (which seemed organic and was RPed well by Alias), but might have survived the initial shot.
An invisible person could have thrown an object (driftglobe or otherwise) past the duergar to cause a distraction.
But the biggest killer here is having all of the duergar act on the same initiative. That provides far too much leverage towards the enemies.
@Merchant - not sure if you have a pro Roll20 account or not, but if you do there are APIs that make rolling initiative for a bunch of enemies super easy (Group Initiative its called.)
All in all - still really enjoy watching you guys - looking forward to what you come up with next.
agree on the dodge action and that dorothea should have had partial cover, and / or when she fell prone, disadvantage on the 2 shots that were taking her death saves. The Duergar ready action seemed proper response. The dragonborn breath weapon would have been the way to start this combat, move breath, as they where reloading
Everyone seem super pumped in the comments... I just thought it was a chore to listen to 2:30 hours of the party's agony...
What a Great Stream. Too Bad about the end there. Tabletop Bob's Got a great Icewind Dale Campaign if anyone wants to see more of what happens in this great adventure.
SPOILERS BELOW
Hell's bells, what a crazy episode. Loose lips sink HPs, eh.
Thinking of the CoS basement escapade, the TftYP boomstick debacle and the everyone-smack-your-opposite fight in Ravnica, while actions certainly have consequences in DnD, a single glib move potentially turning an engrossingly narrated series with great characters into a semi-one-shot can be a bit discouraging :(
Nevertheless, I look forward to seeing how y'all go from here, and thank you for your hard continued work with the excellent content!
Spoiler alert...
Despite the cinematic (as in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid) finale I did enjoy this episode. The desperate plotting of the second half to watch it all unravel, in part from Connor's insane rolling, was surprisingly entertaining.
What next? Well with only one character dead dead, I suppose there could be an Out of the Abyss style imprisonment story; a Goliath prison break; or a new party. The nature of the campaign is, although this chapter is a set piece, there are a dozen unexplored encounters to use, and indeed a different adventure path that doesn't even involve Duergar.
Hope the campaign continues!
you guys did not finished Curse of Strad either!! :(
Why didn’t Darmok use Paladin shield of faith so Dorethea wouldn’t have been a pincushion. Only a few of the bolts would have hit darmok then breath weapon them
Izar, more like Eatzar amirite?!
Are y’all still playing this game?
Love watching your content... Can you tell me what video conferencing software you're using with OBS? I'm currently using Discord but having issues with the actual player videos changing locations in Discord and it messing up my OBS recording with my overlay...
Spoiler: They never came back :(
I really enjoy watching your D&D content. I kinda feel like you planned this to happend, Merchant, leading them directly into this through Mr. Twisted Limb, and then offering almost no way out. Was this planned to happen?
Absolutely not lol. I didn’t even plan for guards to be alerted, and when they were I thought the party would run or surrender lol. I don't think it's fair to say there were no ways out at all honestly.
@@MerchantTV - I still enjoyed it, no worries. And I also thought they should have tried to surrender. I do however not think running was a possibility. Furthermore I think everyone would have at least tried to slay the 3 hammers. :)
I cannot wait to see what you all come up with. I really like the IWD campaign, and it is nice to see your take on it.
I like how VMG and ThyrixSyx have learned som valuable lessons through out the campaign ;)
@@MerchantTV I loved how you let the players try to figure a way out of it. You could have easily offered up the surrender option as an easy out. I also believe there were many options for the players, but as we all know from playing you can get tunnel vision when backed against a wall. Take some keys, cast invisibility on someone and surrender as one. I also almost had a TPK on a group in Rime early on, but it was 100% them being stupid. They split the party 3 ways with 5 PCs.
Just to say it... Well Done Merchant!
@@MerchantTV I agree.. i think in this situation, a surrender would have been wise from the players. There was no way to best the Duergar in combat with these odds. I think they had invisibility from a few players, they could have sneaked and come back for the others maybe? But yeah, in the heat of the moment, sometimes decisions are made that totally backfire. Fun episode though :)
Maybe they have crossbow expert.
As always: Only here to like the video for support :D I cannot watch any of this until I played the campaign myself. See you then.
At 4th level I disagree with the assessment the party could have survived this encounter. 5th or 6th level was critical. They needed abilities like extra attack and fireball to even out the action economy, unless this was literally every duergar on the floor.
Syx's warlock actually died?????
EDIT: Oh.
Sweet starting the week of on a good note
Will you be returning to this storyline with new characters at some point? Have really enjoyed it so far.
I hope our restart can happen IN Tentowns, starting like 2 hours ago so they have SOME chance to save... anything.
Jesus... that ending was unfortunate to say the least. Will be interesting to see how this unfolds next time, with the dragon and all. Thank you to everyone participating for another interesting episode
I *just* noticed there's no Icewind Dale #8. Get 'em Dorothea.
Wow...just.. woe
wow what an episode. my comment relates to the Duergar enlarging. Do they still get an attack the turn they enlarge? Might be something to check before next session. The way I read it, enlarging takes their action. Great job all, can't wait to see how this resolves next time.
This was my thought, as well. RAW (or at least read by me), it says enlarging is the action. I'm taking a team into Sunblight in a few weeks, so this is all part of my research.
Damn they got absolutely destroyed. Some very poor choices made in the heat of the moment there lol.
I really like the players and the characters! Do you make an episode zero? Like creating the characters and all?
Is there a part 8 or did it end here?
I haven’t finished the episode yet. Is this going to be a TPK?
Is there an episode 8
Wow , that was brutal ! Enjoy the episode but wow !
Algorithm V7
It was fun to watch you make em squirm! Keep up the good stuff, may the algorithm gods smile upon you
Sooooo....no eight?
Will you continue with this campaign?
Just super entertaining. Love it! Best content on youtube.
Great v t 👏
I don't want to be that guy, but Duergar Hammerers have an intelligence of 5 and can't speak because they've been driven mad by the constant agony they're in. They also can't understand common. So the whole incident with Eddy's faux pas is... unfortunate. Still, enjoyed it all the same.
Not all creatures are equal or defined by their stat blocks, who says Xardorok doesn’t hold Common classes on the weekend
@@MerchantTV Oh totally, you can definitely homebrew things to work anyway you like. If everyone in the group is enjoying themselves, there's nothing wrong with that.
I've TPK'd a party or 2 in my time through bad rolls or questionable decisions on their part.
Why aren’t the rest of the episodes on Spotify?
What happened to this series? I haven't seen a new upload in over a month and its almost April
Candlekeep is the continuation of this, if you go listen to the start of episode one it’s explained :)
Is there an episode 8 ? I don't see it
I don't think this channel finishes any games. Still their playthrough of Strahd help me work structure out Valaki.
Is this campaign over? Not seen any updates since this episode?
Check /r/guildgates, we’re playing this weekend :)
At work but for sure catching this tonight.
What are there subclasses now since there level 4?
Wow, 7 sessions in and that is a lot of deaths
OOOOOH THEY GOT DESTROYED GODDAMN🤡
Ooooo! 🤪 I love this show! What's gonna happen to our beloved party?
Captured and taken prisoner, forced to eat brain stew until a miraculous escape?
Or
Slaughtered by smelly dwarves while dreaming of roast beef?
Woohoo
nice justin time for more
( ╥﹏╥) ノシ
I found the idea with the driftglobe flashbang realy good, and i quote: Driftglobe This small sphere of thick glass weighs 1 pound. If you are within 60 feet of it you can speak its command word and cause it to emanate the light or daylight spell. Which could made a difference in the fight with the Sunlight Sensitivity of the duergar, but i enjoyed it nonetheless. Good episode
Light is not sunlight.
@@MerchantTV Good call - the driftglobe creates bright light, but bright light does not equal sunlight.
@@MerchantTV i know. Maybe we talk about different Version of the Driftglobe. The Dungeon Master guide says that you can cast daylight once per day(p.166)
@@olivervoigt8730 Daylight does not produce Sunlight either, it's just a wider light that dispells the spell Darkness :)
@@MerchantTV You are right, i wasn't aware of this. Thank you for the clearification. Personaly i think that this is a stupid rule why would a creature from the underdark not be bothered by a sphere of bright light. I think i will homebrew it, so that it would work in my campaign. Have an nice day.
Bump
So what's happening guys? Hope you are not abandoning this story.
Check /r/guildgates if you want information about whats going on, I typically answer questions on there a lot. tl;dr is we're playing this weekend and episode will be out Monday or Tuesday, it won't look like the next episode but it will be ;)
@@MerchantTV thank you sir.
@@MerchantTV maybe add this to your community page so others can find the info?
@@jackharvey8663 I have now :) I'm not sure why people don't check/use the reddit generally though, I've mentioned it quite a bit haha.
@@MerchantTV I agree with you on that but for convenience sake, having a quick message on the community page here on RUclips helps let everyone know.
Thanks anyway dude, love the content 👍
Here we go !
What an ending! Really interested to see what happens next time.
You guys have taken so long to reupload new sessions, I thought you stop ice wind dale.
