Cody (and Brandi) in AEW was cringe. Just because he completed his story in WWE, which everyone wanted aside from the Rock, doesn't mean we can edit those AEW chapters. He was a try-hard. The best moments of Cody in AEW came from 'Grab my Glock' Arn and his weird masculinity promos and vignettes. It was bad. It's not 'AEW really screwed themselves' by booing Cody. AEW has a lot of problems. Cody still being in the company wouldn't fix them.

The AEW fans made zero sense. Cody delivered high quality matches and he put over every new big name that came in. And AEW fans just turned on him for literally zero reason b/c he knows how to cut a promo and work main-event-style.

After the Slog of what WWE was going through in the late 2010s to early 2020s. When Cody came to WWE, it really brought a lot of life back into that company. It’s what made the company flourish a lot more and bring back more life to the company with Roman.

You know it really baffled me why he got SO HATED in AEW, and I’ve been over and over the situation in my head several times since 2022. Like I get WHY fans became disinterested, the booking himself into burying the midcard and the in your face american nationalism may have rubbed people the wrong way, and i was never really a big Cody Rhodes guy at any point (not in past WWE or AEW) but it wouldnt warrant THAT amount of nuclear heat surely? It was like he had done something utterly unthinkable or unforgivable, and it was never really explained properly. Looking back though I think I understand more now as to WHY fans turned. I think there's some revisionist history going on here. Bad booking is why people booed Cody and to my knowledge he was in charge of his own programs. I also think his very short feuds with Shawn Spears, Brian Cage, and Lance Archer are what hurt them in the company. Not to mention a lot of the same people who are now on his bandwagon are some of the same people that said he's just a glorified midcarder when he was on the indies, NJPW, TNA, and AEW.
As someone who was a Cody fan during his AEW run... There were 2 moments that made me sour on him a bit (not as much as those who started booing him etc.) 1. Promising not to ever compete for the world title. That was just flat out stupid. In fact, that was the catalyst for people starting to fantasy book him turning heel, because they were trying to rationalize how he could get around the promise. Then another "please turn heel" wave came later. 2. The Tattoo. This one is kinda silly, but it kinda made me think less of Cody because of how ugly and ill placed it was 😂. Obviously not super serious, more so a funny moment.

Why do people forget that Cody put himself and his wife all over the product? He had the same ego and hubris as the other EVPs. He had the same character arcs over and over, too. Friend turns on him, he gets revenge. New guy beats him up, he beats him after a month. The guy wasted television time and fireworks on a gender reveal. His wife had multiple shows on the RUclips channel and was pushed over legitimate talent. There's a reason he was booed. The product suffered. I'm not even an AEW fan, but WWE was smart to keep his fame whoring wife off of television.
I disagree. Cody had a vision for how he wanted to be portrayed in AEW and the fans weren't buying it because it was so artificial and manufactured. It also didn't help that fans couldn't stand his wife who came off as an entitled person riding her husband's coattails. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad he's doing well in WWE but the idea that AEW is suffering without him in complete nonsense.

Young Bucks are undersized,blatantly choreographed, and mid, yet they book themselves as the best tag team in the world. Cody took himself out of the world title picture. What more could you ask for? He was feuding with many wrestlers while the Elite were only feuding with each other and their circle jerk.

For the Ogogo feud, he kept trying so hard to make himself some mega babyface by portraying himself as an American hero. The way his character was in AEW just felt repetitive and annoying. I don’t know if he was responsible or someone else like Tony was, but he definitely needed to be in a new environment in the WWE

Yeah I've been watching aew on and off since it started and Cody wasn't really doing anything good compared to a lot of people on the roster during and after his run when he reached a certain point. His stuff with Dustin was great, though. It's up there with the best storylines to come out of AEW.
I liked AEW during Hangman's title chase, then I got bored after that because the following storylines weren't as good anymore and I never understood the hate for Cody.
Strongly disagree. Some guys with some persona's just don't fit iinto certain shows. A recent example is MJF being a babyface. If he did that for a couple of years and refused to turn heel then fans would boo him out of the building b/c it's painful. Likewise IMO john cena as a baby face was also horrible and caused half the audience to stop watching wwe as he was shoved down their throat. The audience needs to boo things that suck. Cody in AEW sucked. Alot of things in AEW suck.
What bad match did Cody have in AEW? They were consistently good to great. But yeah, go ahead and chase him off to WWE for him to become their top babyface and merch seller. Truly a brilliant fanbase.
Cody sucked in AEW. He booked himself like shit, he banned himself from ever being champion which is why he gate kept the TNT belt and made that garbage. He was always off trying to host some game show or be a reality TV star (because he secretly wanted to be the rock) and whenever he cane back (from the two month periods he would disappear for) he would immediately bury the current TNT champion (and then leave two weeks later for another game show and surrender the belt). He also said that him and Brandi were singlehandedly ending racism with the first interracial baby (yes, you read that right, he claimed their kid was the first mixed child ever). He was hated for a reason and rightfully so.
Ehh I stopped watching 3 weeks after he became champion, I’m just not feeling it. I try and go back to see if anything changes my mind but I’m just bored of the reign so far. I’ll come back around summer-slam to see if they have something I’m interested in.

Night 1 and 2. He was Cody’s Shield. Randy. I believe it’s more fitting. Same with Gunther but he’s on Raw. Not Smackdown. He’ll probably be the World Heavyweight Champion. Best candidate is Randy or Roman when he comes back. I don’t think Cody is dropping the title to the Rock. However I have an interesting idea. If Randy Vs. Cody happen, what if this takes place a year later and Cody is the heel and Randy is the face. It could work either way.
AEW marks' greatest fumble. They want him to turn Heel so much that he left AEW, but now he's the best Babyface not only in WWE but in wrestling media right now and everyone is embracing it. I laugh at those AEW marks because since then their opinion doesn't matter anymore.

To any AEW fan that may read this comment, I'm just going to lay out the facts and you can deal with it which ever way you want to. The number 1 wrestler in world by any metric you want to use right at this moment is Cody Rhodes. The biggest event in wrestling history was the last Wrestle-mania which was a two night event in which Cody Rhodes was in the main event both nights. When it comes to sells, merchs, any measure you want to use, Cody is number 1. Hell, here it is you guys had Cody for years and would sometimes mock his entrance music and within a short amount of time in WWE the entire crowd sings it from beginning to end even if English isn't their language. Maybe he always acted like a superstar and you didn't like it. Maybe he tried to hard to fit in, and you didn't like it but damn you sure are missing him now. He seemed to be the guy that was also helping to run the company and was doing a good job at it but as soon as he left, all hell broke loose.

In AEW he was boring but in WWE he's even worse because it's almost the same character but acting as a top guy. Of course, maybe it's something cultural, I understand US love him, his story thing and WWE made him a draw but honestly, no appeal to me. Ring skill, promos, attitude... anyway.
The Codyverse was unfortunately one of thr good things about AEW. The only time it was bad was when he beat Racism. The thing was the fans wanted him to turn obnoxious heel, even if Cody was one of the few guys delivering on that show and he had merch on his side. The Cena babyface run was the exemplar of this.

Cody leaving aew honestly wasn't even bad for either side. The punk situation hurt AEW badly. Between that and badly-timed injuries they haven't recovered.
The problems with him in AEW are the result of a multitude of things. He WAS being received as the mega babyface that everyone loves at first. But then he shot his entire run in the foot by losing that match to Jericho and having the stipulation be that he could never challenge for the title again. What were fans supposed to do? He put himself in the midcard for the rest of his time there. The only way for him to challenge for the title is if he turned heel, which is why I believe many fans wanted him to. Keep in mind, their fanbase was a fair bit bigger than it is now. Now they’ve fallen into just a niche of fans, but they were growing in popularity by the time he left (especially with the arrival of Punk and Danielson at the time). The Ogogo stuff wouldn’t have been received much better in WWE, it was very poorly done. There were MANY questionable decisions regarding his run in AEW and there was also some clear division between him and others about the directions to take the company in. WWE has presented him MUCH better (and this might be because Cody doesn’t have as much control over his stuff). In AEW he ALWAYS had people in his corner who would even help out from time to time, which is a heel move, yet he didn’t want to be perceived as such. In WWE he’s by himself, and looks much stronger because of it. There’s a lot I can criticize the AEW fandom for, but the booing of Cody at that time is not one of them. That was the result of very poor booking decisions (like how he kept facing new wrestlers that people were excited about but had to eventually get a win over all of them).
I agree with all your points except that 'blame' doesn't fall on the fans. It falls on all party's involved including the fans, Tony, and Cody. I was avidly watching AEW at the time, even if I saw the issues with booking and storytelling that are still hurting them to this day, and some of the disdain was just unfounded. The guy was doing everything in his power (going through flaming tables, taking cutters off a ladder and endless potshots at WWE) to turn the crowd back on his side, but for whatever reason the audience responded negatively to him regardless. I do agree that that stupid stipulation, goofy ass tattoo (that I barely notice now) and the horrendous feud with Ogogo all hurt his run, but most of his other feuds were good to great (plus he gave the ruby to MJF, Brodie Lee, Sammy Guevara, etc). The fans just wanted to force his character in a direction that they (read: Cody, Khan & AEW) weren't ready (or he wasn't ready) to take it. Hopefully, when the time is right he won't make the same mistake(s) in WWE.

I still don't see Cody as a top guy. I think he's getting a push out of a combination of pity and the novelty of him being a former AEW EVP. I think he's a mid card guy that will be pushed right back down to the mid card where he belongs after his title run is over, just like Jinder Mahal and Kofi Kingston.
Cody Rhodes during the last half of his run sucked in AEW. He was terrible and deserved to be booed. Not entirely his fault though, the booking was garbage and his "friends" in the elite sabotaged him. He had no one to work with because they stuck him into his own little bubble.

After the Slog of what WWE was going through in the late 2010s to early 2020s. When Cody came to WWE, it really brought a lot of life back into that company. It’s what made the company flourish a lot more and bring back more life to the company with Roman.

You know it really baffled me why he got SO HATED in AEW, and I’ve been over and over the situation in my head several times since 2022. Like I get WHY fans became disinterested, the booking himself into burying the midcard and the in your face american nationalism may have rubbed people the wrong way, and i was never really a big Cody Rhodes guy at any point (not in past WWE or AEW) but it wouldnt warrant THAT amount of nuclear heat surely? It was like he had done something utterly unthinkable or unforgivable, and it was never really explained properly.
Looking back though I think I understand more now as to WHY fans turned.
And it seems to be when he departed the Elite stable, and did his own thing with the Nightmare Factory/Family.

Like Cody is actually cool with the Bucks, or at least he’s being mature about it and staying civil to the public eye, but the cult like appreciation towards the Elite themselves is so strong in fanboys it’s like the mere process of Cody leaving the stable was enough to be considered a cardinal sin to them.
I’m trying to understand why the heat was so nuclear, and this is the only way that’s making sense to me. And hey, if the meta made him the biggest babyface WWE has right now by leaving their (heel) company completely, then so be it.

I think there's some revisionist history going on here. Bad booking is why people booed Cody and to my knowledge he was in charge of his own programs. I also think his very short feuds with Shawn Spears, Brian Cage, and Lance Archer are what hurt them in the company. Not to mention a lot of the same people who are now on his bandwagon are some of the same people that said he's just a glorified midcarder when he was on the indies, NJPW, TNA, and AEW.
As someone who was a Cody fan during his AEW run... There were 2 moments that made me sour on him a bit (not as much as those who started booing him etc.)
1. Promising not to ever compete for the world title. That was just flat out stupid. In fact, that was the catalyst for people starting to fantasy book him turning heel, because they were trying to rationalize how he could get around the promise. Then another "please turn heel" wave came later.
2. The Tattoo. This one is kinda silly, but it kinda made me think less of Cody because of how ugly and ill placed it was 😂. Obviously not super serious, more so a funny moment.

Yeah I've been watching aew on and off since it started and Cody wasn't really doing anything good compared to a lot of people on the roster during and after his run when he reached a certain point. His stuff with Dustin was great, though. It's up there with the best storylines to come out of AEW.
I liked AEW during Hangman's title chase, then I got bored after that because the following storylines weren't as good anymore and I never understood the hate for Cody.
Strongly disagree. Some guys with some persona's just don't fit iinto certain shows. A recent example is MJF being a babyface. If he did that for a couple of years and refused to turn heel then fans would boo him out of the building b/c it's painful. Cody sucked in AEW. He booked himself like shit, he banned himself from ever being champion which is why he gate kept the TNT belt and made that garbage. He was always off trying to host some game show or be a reality TV star (because he secretly wanted to be the rock) and whenever he cane back (from the two month periods he would disappear for) he would immediately bury the current TNT champion (and then leave two weeks later for another game show and surrender the belt). He also said that him and Brandi were singlehandedly ending racism with the first interracial baby (yes, you read that right, he claimed their kid was the first mixed child ever). He was hated for a reason and rightfully so.

The number 1 wrestler in world by any metric you want to use right at this moment is Cody Rhodes. The biggest event in wrestling history was the last Wrestle-mania which was a two night event in which Cody Rhodes was in the main event both nights. When it comes to sells, merchs, any measure you want to use, Cody is number 1. Hell, here it is you guys had Cody for years and would sometimes mock his entrance music and within a short amount of time in WWE the entire crowd sings it from beginning to end even if English isn't their language. Maybe he always acted like a superstar and you didn't like it. Maybe he tried to hard to fit in, and you didn't like it but damn you sure are missing him now. He seemed to be the guy that was also helping to run the company and was doing a good job at it but as soon as he left, all hell broke loose.

WWE is really not for causals it more for mark now.
The problems with him in AEW are the result of a multitude of things. He WAS being received as the mega babyface that everyone loves at first. But then he shot his entire run in the foot by losing that match to Jericho and having the stipulation be that he could never challenge for the title again. What were fans supposed to do? He put himself in the midcard for the rest of his time there. The only way for him to challenge for the title is if he turned heel, which is why I believe many fans wanted him to. Keep in mind, their fanbase was a fair bit bigger than it is now. Now they’ve fallen into just a niche of fans, but they were growing in popularity by the time he left (especially with the arrival of Punk and Danielson at the time).
The Ogogo stuff wouldn’t have been received much better in WWE, it was very poorly done. There were MANY questionable decisions regarding his run in AEW and there was also some clear division between him and others about the directions to take the company in. WWE has presented him MUCH better (and this might be because Cody doesn’t have as much control over his stuff). In AEW he ALWAYS had people in his corner who would even help out from time to time, which is a heel move, yet he didn’t want to be perceived as such. In WWE he’s by himself, and looks much stronger because of it.
There’s a lot I can criticize the AEW fandom for, but the booing of Cody at that time is not one of them. That was the result of very poor booking decisions (like how he kept facing new wrestlers that people were excited about but had to eventually get a win over all of them).

I agree with all your points except that 'blame' doesn't fall on the fans. It falls on all party's involved including the fans, Tony, and Cody. I was avidly watching AEW at the time, even if I saw the issues with booking and storytelling that are still hurting them to this day, and some of the disdain was just unfounded. The guy was doing everything in his power (going through flaming tables, taking cutters off a ladder and endless potshots at WWE) to turn the crowd back on his side, but for whatever reason the audience responded negatively to him regardless.
I do agree that that stupid stipulation, goofy ass tattoo (that I barely notice now) and the horrendous feud with Ogogo all hurt his run, but most of his other feuds were good to great (plus he gave the ruby to MJF, Brodie Lee, Sammy Guevara, etc).
The fans just wanted to force his character in a direction that they (read: Cody, Khan & AEW) weren't ready (or he wasn't ready) to take it.
Hopefully, when the time is right he won't make the same mistake(s) in WWE.
