The HBO show was a good adaptation I did appreciate and enjoy it(especially Episode 3 which is a masterpiece of television). But As a huge TLOU fan, and a huge fan of both games Part 1 and 2 I loved them both so much it's my favorite game series. It's a no brainer for me I absolutely still prefer the games over the show. In my opinion the games are so much more richer and fulfilling and they let you spend quality time with these characters and world and you just experience it with so much more depth and feeling. I feel like the show takes the internalized feelings and emotions of the game characters and puts it more on the forefront for the show characters resulting in their characters having no depth. We know that Joel is super scared of rekindling the old version of himself and is afraid of being hurt in that way again but he never explicitly says it. When Tommy and Joel are talking about why he should take Ellie instead of Joel he basically says everything he’s feeling internally and i feel like that takes away the depth of the character because like i said i feel like game joel feels that exact same way but that is discovered by looking deeper into the writing and analyzing it. The performances feel hollow because there is nothing left within the subtext of the performances.
Yup, agree with you so much. Theres more and deeper layers to the game characters in my opinion. That exact scene right after in game (The choice, where Joel decides he's going to take Ellie instead of Tommy) is handled so well in the game, where Joel due to his pride and reservations for showing feelings just tells Tommy to go home and Ellie to get on his horse and like mumbles some excuse telling Tommy he should be home with his wife. But theres so much more going on under the surface
This is really good. Feel like you're kinda getting shived by the algorithm. I watched the tv show, then played the video game (PC remastered), and I actually enjoyed the show more. I think that's because, while I empathised him, I never really identified with Joel. I think that made it harder for me to enjoy it. I do think you have a point here though, although The Last of Us doesn't really take advantage of games as a medium in the way a game like Undertale does. I think the show could've been better than game in every way, and the fact that it wasn't was on the showrunners.
Thanks for tuning in man, everytime I try something new my numbers go down but I've accepted it by this point. 100%, the only really valid critiscism I would agree with people who are not quite as fans of TLOU game as I am, is in it's gameplay and that it's a bunch of cutscenes with some decent 3rd person shooter sequences sprinkled in. It works for me because I think the cinematics are some of the best I've ever seen and the gameplay is pretty fun and satisfying but I can def see why people disagree. I really wished they would have "locked into" Joels POV more and given Ellie and Joel a lot more small problems they have to work together to solve, and yeah subtlety is not in their vocabulary
