You should really read the books. They're just hundreds of times better even though the true end is nowhere in sight. If you feel satisfied watching the first 4 seasons again, then you're going to love the world of Ice and Fire even more.
Yeah it was a once in a lifetime show. Even now I sometimes watch random GoT scenes on youtube and the writing and characters are so good that a single scene is satisfying by itself without context.
@@dunbass7149 a fantasy series with hardly any magic or fantasy elements in the first season. the first season can be argued to be the best if not one of the best seasons of the show. the only magic or fantasy in the first season was the opening scene with White Walkers and the ending scene with dragons being born, both of these take up maybe ~20 minutes of airtime at most. so that means the first season was ~10 hours of television with only ~20 minutes of magic or "fantasy" and it was arguably the best season or one of the best. so a fantasy series was able to keep audiences engaged with very little fantasy or magic and be compelling and high quality without relying on magic or fantasy. name another series that could do that. Harry Potter without magic would be nothing. Star Wars without the force or fictional space travel would be nothing. Lord of the Rings without orcs, elves, and magic would be nothing

I don’t blame for Dan and Dave wanting out but I do blame them for not passing the torch. It’s just infinitely frustrating what this shows later seasons could have been.
@@ciandryl He said he didn't blame them for wanting to leave the show, which is perfectly acceptible. Half a decade is a long time for producing a show as big as GoT.
@@officialtbhoops You're very confident in that despite presumably having never written for television, or written at all professionally (since you can't assume that to be the case of "any one of us").
I feel like someday when there is a notion of a complete canon of Game of Thrones they should do an animated version of the whole series and they could try to get the old actors back to do voice acting, but even if they don't I think it could be a nice way to get the full scope of the story without having to worry as much about production costs.
This show was very much a "lost" "survivor" type of show where we would have 20 people over for watch parties. I threw the same party for 2 months a year for 8 years. It is incredibly sad that part of my life is gone
Ugh I wish I was older when game of thrones was popular I only just watched it this year and had no one to talk to it about other than my dad and my grandma who both don’t remember as much because they haven’t watched it in YEARS
My entire workplace talked about GOT on a Tuesday morning - as an Aussie we watched it Monday nights and it was such a cultural phenomenon that you had to watch it straight away or you would be spoiled by those conversations. I have never seen that before for a show and you invest so much of your life into it over the years. I miss that too.
In America there were a few shows that were as celebrated as Game of Thrones. "The Sopranos" & "Lost" were the last 2 shows that were at its level where Sopranos was at or above it and Lost was close but GOT was bigger. It was like you said, a show you had to watch the episode premieres because you knew all the coworkers and classmates would be talking about it. I don't think we will ever get a show as popular as Game of Thrones ever again because the current trend of streaming services will fracture viewership creating a brick wall to anyone outside the service.
@@SeemsLogicalThe Sopranos is credited by many as being THE first show to be one of those “shows with masterful writing with hour long episodes that EVERYONE watched and lasted for multiple seasons over the span of nearly a decade.” Like you said, aside from Lost and GOT, there weren’t many other shows that lived up to that. Maybe Breaking Bad? The Walking Dead could be added to the list but that shows popularity and quality went down fast.
@@Confy__ You'd have to go further back in time to find shows that had universal popularity like the Sopranos did. My parents era had shows like M.A.S.H. , All in the Family & the Wonder Years that were as popular as Sopranos for their era. But that's way back in the day. Breaking Bad & Better Call Saul had the quality to become as popular as the Sopranos. And they were competing with Game of Thrones at the time, where if you could only watch one show then Game of Thrones was the better show to watch. The show The Wire had a similar problem where it was well written but it was competing with the Sopranos. But the existence of TiVo where you could record shows on the VCR made it so people didn't stay up to watch the premieres, they would watch them more at their personal leisure. Which played a part in why shows won't ever surpass the Sopranos. And then there was Narcos which started out strong despite being a Netflix show and died out pretty quickly. I think we will see a lot of shows play out like in the future because streaming limits a shows exposure to the masses.
@@SeemsLogical I agree. I was going to mention MASH and The Wire, but as much as I love those shows, I don’t know if they’re on the same level in terms of how popular they were. They were popular for their time but I don’t think they reached anywhere near the amount of people GOT/Sopranos did. I guess when it comes to MASH it could’ve been even more of a cultural impact if it came out when more people had TVs. Not saying people in the 70s didn’t have TVs but more people have them now than they did in the 70s, they also didn’t have all the modern luxuries we have today like streaming etc. The Wire is some of the best written television but I feel like it didn’t reach the same levels as Sopranos, GOT, etc. It really is a shame we rarely get good shows like the ones we both mentioned anymore.
Raz, what you miss is Monoculture. Game of Thrones was the last great media that EVERYBODY consumed. After that everything became so fractured, and everybody started consuming media that was algorithimithicly chosen for them. Game of Thrones was the last. great. show. that EVERYBODY watched.
@@LightPink Squid Game was massive but I don't think it's anywhere near as big as GoT was. Another thing is that it's only had one season (I think? I haven't seen it myself tbh) and that season all came out fully so no weekly episodes. When GoT was on people speculated and discussed it every day anticipating the next episode. Never got that with Squid Game and when I did hear people discuss it in the office for example they couldn't really discuss it because they were always on different episodes.
@@LightPink Squid game was a one-season netflix TV show that, at best, anyone you mention it to today will say "ohhhh I remember that". Not even close to the nearly decade-long behemoth that dominated the culture. It's honestly kind of laughable to compare the two
Yeah, Game of thrones was the last show that everybody watched. Not long after it ended there was a shift in the way people consumed movies and tv-shows. Streaming services divided people each on their own shows in their own time. There were no way of knowing what your coworkers were watching previous night, so there weren't (and aren't) any water cooler talk like there was with the Game of thrones. In addition of the change in the way people consume media, the media itself changed also. Most of what Hollywood produces nowadays is of poor quality, similar of what the 8th season of GoT provided, and crappy shows has snowball's chance in hell to become widely loved sensations. So it is likely that we will not get hit shows any time soon, probably not in a decade at least.
2013-2014 was such a great year for tv. Game of Thrones and Walking Dead were arguably in their peak, Breaking Bad and The Office were in their final seasons, television was just something everyone could watch, enjoy, and discuss. I had awesome conversations with people I never even spoke to once and then never spoke to again. People so unlikely to talk to each other were able to talk and enjoy each others company. It really brought people together
You're missing a couple of shows that are considered by many as some of the greatest shows ever like Mad Men, Sons of Anarchy, Attack on Titan, Sherlock, The Big Bang Theory, Person of Interest, Modern Family, Hannibal, True detective season 1, Bojack Horseman, House of Cards, and many more that I am forgetting at the moment
You also forgot The Office's little government job cousin shows Parks and Recreation (which went into an underrated category at the time) and cop buddy cousin Brooklyn 99, whose popularity was(and still is) largely due to its worldwide streaming on Netflix.
This show was my life. It’s wild how it went from a cultural phenomenon to just radio silence after the finale. I still feel a sort of grief about it to this day. like a family member that passed years ago and you come across a picture of them and you’re reminded of the time you had with them. That may seem pathetic to some people but I loved that show. I loved theorizing, I loved the hot takes and discussions with people. I agree that a proper remake in the future would feel wrong without the original actors and the cynic in me says there will never be another piece of media like it. I hope I’m wrong but between GoT, mass effect, and Star Wars, Some of my favorite fictional stories have just kinda died to me.
I think you're right that there will never be another piece of media like GOT, because that was very likely the last "event watching" experience we'll have as a culture. The media environment is so fractured these days, it's simply not possible to have something like that happen again. GOT hit cultural "must watch" status even as the industry was crossing into an environment where that would no longer be something that was possible. Your comparison to Mass Effect.... OOF. I was a big "indoctrination theory" guy after ME3. Looking back, the grief and disbelief I felt after ME3 was the so-much-less-impactful precursor to the same feelings I had and have about GOT.
I get where you're coming from. It's one of those things you wish you could experience for the first time again, the books and the show. Also holds sentimental value as I was introduced to it by an ex-gf, then passively introduced it to another gf because I just happened to have it on when she came over once. There just hasn't been a series that has made me feel the same way since and that holds that amount of sentimental value at the same time. From the score, to the themes of the series, to the story itself, just perfect
The thing that baffles me the most about GOT is that streamers didn’t try to release more of their flagship shows weekly or at least in small batches per week. It helps them because then you would retain more of the people who just watch a show then cancel. And the cultural zeitgeist and enjoyment of the show is obviously so much better for many viewers. Imagine if Arcane was released weekly or 3 eps per week.
The problem with adapting a song of ice and fire is that most of the plots just can’t be removed. Look at Jayne Poole. Because they removed her plot the show runners had to force Sansa into winterfell. This destroyed Sansa’s plot in the vale, which ruined it’s importance, and stops littlefinger’s plot line (it’s a popular theory that Sansa is going to kill little finger in TWoW). Now Jon has no reason to break his vows - he does care about Sansa but Arya is his favorite sibling and even then he only breaks his vows after receiving a letter that says Stannis failed (which is probably not truthful). All these plot lines are riveting and engaging, torn apart by in service to a self imposed episode limit. All because the show runners wanted to simplify the story. And some people only see the problems with season 8.
Sansa has a grand total of 2 chapters in A Feast for Crows. You are guessing that the letter isn't true and that Sansa will kill LF, but it's been 13 years since A Dance With Dragons (even longer since the last published Sansa chapter in A Feast for Crows) and we still haven't gotten that.
this is true but the show went off the rails when they got to the point where the books add half a dozen new major characters and plotlines that are just left hanging. it's obvious fAegon and Dorne were supposed to be a huge thing but it was unclear how these stories were going to be resolved (still unclear a decade later). I think that maybe if they stayed closer to the source material S5 wouldn't have been so bad... but the show would still suck once they ran out of books to adapt. D&D were exceptional showrunners at first but the heart and soul of the story were always Martin's. If he can't give it a proper ending than nobody can. Still, I kinda expected it to meander like in S5&6, the dumpster fire of S7&8 is a mystery. The "butterfly effect" is one thing but putting those words about innocents into Jaime's mouth is something else.
@@Sky-Bananas Full metal alchemist is an anime that started before the author finished the manga, like a comic book, and the show had to make an original ending that deviated greatly from the authors planned ending. Then after the manga finished the anime was rebooted, called Full metal alchemist brotherhood, which followed the authors story and is considered the best anime of all time by many.
@@justingold9240 many people talk about an animated version of GOT. Honestly I think it’d work due to the fact that you can’t really remake a show like GOT this long after it’s started in live action. It’d have to be different in a lot of ways for it to garner success
@@justingold9240 Tbf, the one critique you can levy against FMA: Brotherhood is that many aspects that were already done in 2003 sometimes felt a bit rushed in Brotherhood. Without spoiling anything: The whole plot around Nina is a good example. In 2003, the plot is spread over two episodes, while in Brotherhood it's done in just one. So, imo it's best to watch 2003 first to fully appreciate Brotherhood, which is probably also what the creators of Brotherhood thought anyone would have done, maybe also partly knowing they couldn't do it better than 2003, anyway, too. But many people today get told 2003 isn't worth their time and that Brotherhood is _the_ definitive version and now that it's almost impossible to watch FMA 2003 anywhere (legally), anyway, (I had to buy a used DVD set to be able to watch it again), I think some people new to the series need a while to get into it. I prefer Brotherhood overall, too, but I'm glad I also watched 2003 first and also like some of the decisions made later in 2003, too. Lowart has a good series comparing the two versions, imo. What this has to do with GoT? Well, I hope GoT doesn't get the _exact_ same treatment as Brotherhood in that the new series rushes the stuff the original series already covered very well (so say up to S4) because "everybody has seen the OG GoT anyway" and then later the latter becomes more and more unavailable, while the new one becomes the de-facto standard and people have to live with the worse version of the first few seasons. It wasn't _as_ bad with FMA because the time up until the changes was much shorter, for GoT I think it would be much worse.
I miss it. It's my comfort show, I'll rewatch it a couple times a year and every time I start season 7 I think to myself maybe it won't be that bad and then it's actually even worse
I have rewatched 2 times in the last 5 years. After S6 I found myself skipping a good amount parts and on neither of those rewatches could I get past 10mins of the last episode 🤣 that’s how bad it was
You hit the nail on the head when you mentioned GOT being a niche and having depth while still appealing to a massive audience. Every once in a while, whether it be music, literature, movies, or TV shows, something golden comes out that is a piece of art that captivates many people, but those are one in a million. Most entertainment is low-tier and safe to appeal to as many as possible. It's pretty sad, actually..
It was legendary in so many ways. I remember working at Trader Joes and everyone talking about it; sports talk shows talked about it; people at the gym were talking about it; everyone at school talked about it. It was one of the very few shows that was a cultural phenomenon.
The unforunate part is tv shows are shit nowadays because people involved in making tv shows aren't hired for their skills they are hired because they are progressive and check DEI boxes (diversity equity inclusion) and actors are cast that way too. Tv shows can't be made like they were in the 2010's anymore and this is why there are no good shows coming out anymore. The golden age of TV shows is dead and it most likely will be even worse in the future.
@@iamrysheem Yeah a bunch of garbage lol. quantity does not = quality. Most of the shows are woke trash now meant to make men look pathetic and emasculated. Things are only getting more and more woke and tv shows are focused less and less on a good story and more and more on DEI casting for actors and writers and directors. Please enlighten me and let me know the amazingly good tv shows that are coming out right now that are on par with game of thrones seasons 1-4? House of the dragon is not even close
I read that a big part of the reason the show ended was that the actors were exhausted. if you think about it, for 10 years or so they were filming, often on location. That's a really long time, eventually it would become completely draining and people are putting their lives on hold for a very long time. The way I look at it, is the ending was rushed and disappointing, but it's still the best show to ever be on TV, and it's not even close. So just enjoy the end, use your imagination to fill in the build up that should have been there, and just have fun with it. You don't have to like the last season, but you can let go of hating it and just be thankful we got such a great story. Hopefully the books will eventually release so that we can have the fleshed out ending we really deserve. But I can't fault the cast and crew for needing this to wrap up after all those years, and there are moments in season 8 that are pretty amazing. I think the hate is completely overblown because that's what people love to do online, hate everything. It deserves some of it, but GoT at it's worst is better than most shows at their best, and I'm just thankful we got what we got. Anyway, just my two cents.
I’ll never forgive my dad for spoiling the red wedding right after Robb killed his FIRST ENEMY IN SEASON 1. Dude walked in and just goes “oh yeah robb i loved him ducked up how they killed him off” and just acted like im not on SEASON ONE
@@jocas94that is a really good point. All I remember seeing from people in the know was "oh, next week is going to be good, your in for a real treat. You need to watch" I knew something was up, but wow
Spoilers are the worst. Some people are incapable of considering other people's perspectives and how the things they say can dramatically influence the impact great moments affect them. There's no way it'd ever be as impactful for you now because you'll always be thinking about the moment it got spoiled.
I recently rewatched the series (for like the 9th time lol) and felt this exact feeling. Almost an impending doom of "I'm enjoying this so much all over again, it's so amazing! BUT... I don't want to move through it because I know what's coming..." You really encapsulated that feeling well in this commentary. I've had trouble verbalizing it, but now I think I'll just refer folks to this video 😂
I think you nailed exactly what I miss about it. Looking past the unbelievable writing and acting of the first few seasons, it was a cultural phenomenon is a way few things are. I would talk to my fellow nerdy friends who also read the books about it Sunday night, but then Monday morning my regular work friends would want to chat about it, then Tuesday at the gym my basketball buddies would be talking about it. The sense of community and the amount of discourse that was generated was special, it hooked everyone. Who knows if we’ll see it again ok that level. Just grateful to have been a part of it.
after all these years I still can't rewatch the series. It hurts sooo bad. Your opening speech perfectly reflected what the series was for me too. I wonder when I'll be able to watch the whole thing again. At the moment i am only strong enough to watch certain scenes when i feel like it
I've rewatched the first 4 seasons once and I kinda feel like doing that again. I just don't view anything past that as canon and I've somewhat come to peace that we are never getting the proper ending to this story.
I managed to avoid all spoilers for years and just finished the show for the first time this last winter. I think not watching it live, while it certainly meant i missed out on the "moment," meant i wasn't AS let down by the end, for which i am grateful, though i was still frequently frustrated. This might've finally inspired me to actually read the books. We'll see.
I think a big problem was that a lot of the main characters line Emilia Clarke & Kit Harington didn’t feel like continuing this show for a whole lot more seasons - there was an interview where they said the last season was all they had left in them.. so that’s a pity but also understandable
Yeah, although Kit did sign on to do the Jon Snow show (which has since been canned, seems like they couldn't find a good angle, which, like, yeah, there is not much left there), so it almost seems like what he needed more than anything was a break. I wonder if the show had branched out more in the way that the books do, whether or not they would have felt as exhausted by the end. As the story in the show is so simplified, a lot more screentime and narrative weight is dedicated to Jon and Dany, but in a version of the show with Quentyn Martell and Victarion Greyjoy and Young Gryff, the narrative responsibility wouldn't have rested on them so heavily, presumably leading to less demanding shoots and more time to exist outside of Thrones. It obviously is still a huge chunk of their life to be a part of a project, but yeah I will always be curious if a less demanding schedule would have had them feeling less burnt out.
That, we probably will never know unfortunately! But I totally agree with you, maybe they would have been able to keep going a bit more in that case. Oh what could have been!
@@razbutwo Considering how long I was willing to wait between seasons of Attack on Titan (speaking of shows with disappointing endings...), I'd have been perfectly happy to wait an extra year for each season if they were going to be better quality/a better adaptation _and_ give the actors more downtime.

sometimes i make my friends who have never watched the show watch it with me, just to re-experience Game of Thrones for the first time again vicariously through them.
I'm so glad that you also see that the show went downhill well before season 8. I was very close to quitting the show in season 7 after a disappointing season 6, but figured that I might as well finish the series out because that's what the people around me wanted to do.
I miss it a lot too! The first season of House of the Dragon actually quenched some of my longing for the universe, but the second season was disappointing in many ways. So I finally decided to start reading the books, in a very casual way, on my Kindle. And it's been great. Some days I read a chapter or two and then I'm on page 500! Anyway, it's an excellent universe and I hope the books have a better conclusion.
The books are amazing! Make sure to read fire and blood and the knight of the Seven kingdoms, which is my favorite. Season 2 of HOTD was disappointing, hopefully with the writers strike done and hbo hopefully under new management soon it will be better (really hope nettles shows up to the vale with rheana in the beginning of season 3 and says "wtf you doing with my dragon")

While I understand and empathize with the idea that Weiss and Benioff wanted to do other things, I also believe that there are very few pieces of art that truly capture the zeitgeist the way GoT did. It wasn't just a show, it was conversations at the water cooler on Monday morning, it was talking to your parents and grandparents who usually don't watch anything like GoT about what you think will happen next week, it was arguing with your neighbor about who is the coolest character. Everyone watched GoT, it drew the eyes of the world for a period of time. And when you have created a piece of art like that, I think you owe it to the world to give it your all and follow it through to completion. Quitting on GoT the way they did was like if Leonardo da Vinci got a little over half way through painting the Mona Lisa and then thought "man I'm tired of this, I'm going to go paint fruit bowls instead".
I personally felt that ending with “Idk idk idk sorry for wasting your time have a great day bye” was the most relatable YT video outro I’ve ever heard
I've been waiting for The Captal's Tower since 2000, pretty sure Melanie Rawn will never finish that trilogy at this point. It's a risk one has to take with any new book series, alas.
I will just NEVER forgive what they ended up doing with Dany’s story. It hurts even more when you’ve read the books and know what she’s had to over come and how much she grew in strength to become the Mother Of Dragons. Such a disservice to such a brilliant character. I would like to think that GRRM had higher hopes for her than what ended up playing out in the show.
I miss this show so much I genuinely feel an ache in my heart. House of the dragon didn't cut it. I've read all the books and most of the lore. Now I'm rereading them again
Thank you for sharing these observations and opinions. This series was like a good friend who we shared intense experiences with... and then that friendship ended in a weird, uncomfortable and disappointing way. I will always continue to treasure that lost friendship, and mourn the might-have-beens.
I rewatched Game of Thrones earlier this year and I actually loved it more than I did before. It’s now my second favorite show behind Attack on Titan. I enjoy all of the seasons. 1. Season 4 (10/10) 2. Season 6 (10/10) 3. Season 3 (10/10) 4. Season 1 (10/10) 5. Season 2 (10/10) 6. Season 5 (9.3/10) 7. Season 7 (8/10) 8. Season 8 (7/10) Season 6 I’ve never cared about the “problems” for me a top 10 season of tv 10/10. Season 5, 7, and 8 grew on me. Game of Thrones changed my life and I want to read the books sometime for sure ❤
I got into GoT very late in the game, but when someone actually showed it to me, I was hooked so hard that I literally spent like a week and a half doing nothing but watching this show... My reward for getting super invested was getting to watch season 7 as it came out. I never even watched season 8, and I simply pretend it doesn't exist and that the show was a cancelled gem.
You’re not missing anything watching season 8, honestly. I didn’t care for season 7. Season 6 had some good episodes, but peak GOT for me was seasons 1-4 for sure.
i remember being in school and just being so happy that i would get to go home and watch game of thrones with my family it would honestly make my day so much better knowing dinner would come along and we would just all watch it
I feel the same way. I'm basically just pretending the bad parts didn't happen and enjoying the books/show/GoT world for the good parts that it truly still is. Creators like you, who say what I'm thinking, but better than I am able to, are just one of the many reasons why I love this fandom so much. I'm grateful to be the tiniest part of it. It feels like home, and honestly, it always will. There will always be plenty to talk about when it comes to this series, and I'm so grateful to George and everyone in the fandom for those conversations, analysis, videos, etc. So thank you and hope y'all never stop.
U should consider reading the kingkiller chronicles in the meanwhile to also wait for the third installment of that fantasy trilogy that may never even be finished
I was just talking with my family how there’s no more hype for shows when they come out. Like today I realized there’s a new season of umbrella academy. That used to be exciting and smthing with anticipation.
I never watched the show when it was first airing. But I remember the way that every corner of the internet was always discussing it. There was anticipation. Excitement. Enjoyment. And in a weird way, unity. I feel like it was the last time that a show represented the grand scale cultural zeitgeist. I miss those days.
i remember hosting watchparty's, episodes dropped on monday at 4A.M. but it was a party everyweek!!! once in a lifetime, we should be happy that we had the excitement of getting every season while it was stil good, rewatching it for new people will never be the same, this was a once in a lifetime show, maybe like what lord of the rings was 20+ years ago. thanks for this video, it was really nice to revisit
im 16 and i watched the whole show last month after watching house of the dragon. it kinda makes me a bit angry that i was too young to experience all of this.
Part of the issue is the actors, lots of them didn’t like the ending but you also have Kit Harrington talking about how he couldn’t do it anymore, and most felt the same.
I doubt that D&D were consciously or subconsciously rushing the second half of seasons. I think they just weren't good enough as writers to continue a massive world with no source material. As you said, they could have stayed closer to the material that did exist but they had to adapt sooner or later because they knew they were running out of runway. They had to write their own material. I've always said smart characters are limited by the intellect of the writer. Writers (especially novelists) get more time to think about the lines and actions of smart characters but ultimately, there is an upper limit on what a person can write depending on their own capabilities.
Couldn't agree more with all your points ,especially on the cast being absolutetly perfect (20:55). It makes it even more sadder realizing all of those talented actors never got to bring their characters to satisfying conclusion. Just sad man
20:49 I wish if they ever do an adaptation of A song of Ice and Fire in the future, they do an animated show.. It will be so cool to see that story animated..
I'm sure the action, battles and creatures would look great animated but so much of the show is people standing around in rooms and talking that I don't think it would play to animation's strengths. You'd miss out on all the live actors' performances. Assuming the books are ever finished in some form they may just be unadaptable. It would have to be a once in a lifetime production like the Lord of the Rings trilogy, but over like a decade and I just don't see it happening.
I watched the first season in one shot with some friends. After Bran was pushed from the tower, I turned to them and said "If that's how the first episode ends, how is the first season going to end?" I was not disappointed. I read all five of the books before watching the next season. I relate to Raz hard.
watching mashups of people reacting to the most iconic and shocking scenes from this show and others like twd right after watching them myself was always so much fun for me but the complete change in their reactions to the later seasons is so funny and tragic to see
I was a freshman in college the year season 8 came out. I somehow hadn't heard about the negativity - but instead had one of my friends on campus tell me it was a must watch. I didn't have HBO, so each week I'd go to the school library and pick up the next season. I'd watch an episode every night after class and then spam my friend with reactions right after. We've long since graduated and moved on, but it was such a core memory in our friendship that this show gave me.
I was extremely late to G.O.T. first time watching it was earlier this year. I got really tired of trying to avoid spoilers but got to the point i couldn't avoid it anymore and finally watched it. OMG i was hooked and binged the whole thing for hours each day. Ive already rewatched the entire series 3x this year. Finally watched House of Dragon too this year and damn. So freaking happy i watched the world of G.O.T. I really want to read the books but i have issues with ADHD and Dyslexia, I need to find the Bionic Reading version of the books, that helps me to read.
Game of Thrones changed how I watch TV and even movies. I don’t think I will ever again be able to enjoy all the decent quality content that is coming out. Prime GoT set the standard too high. And nothing has yet reached the level of GoT 1-4 and tbh for me personally I think nothing ever will. I have stopped trying to fill the void GoT left with something new. The first four seasons are better at this and luckily for me the way the show ended doesn’t take away from them.
Try HBO's earlier show, The Wire. It's a different setting, but it's got the same type of large-scope interwoven story with many characters jockeying for power in their own ways.
I think another factor that hampered the showrunners was the need to prevent leaks, to keep the storylines secret. This wasn't a problem in the earlier seasons because the books were there to be read. But with no books, and such massive interest, the pressure must have been immense. They could have done with help from other writers. Instead they took on most of the writing themselves so that a minimal number of people were involved. It would have been no use involving GRRM as it's clear that he can't finish it either.
Sometimes I just go watch the trailers for seasons 2 and 3 and feel some of the rush come back from that time. I have watched a lot of shows that I like since Game of Thrones but nothing that compares at all to the hype of those days. Being so excited for every Sunday... I had already read the books when the first episode aired. After the first season, my dad asked to borrow book 1 from me and I still remember when I got a call from my mother about how she couldn't remember the last time she saw my dad wanting to read something strictly for pleasure. Game of Thrones was unrivaled and where there's other shows that I'd say I miss seeing for the first time I absolutely MOURN the loss of Game of Thrones. What it was, what it could have continued to be... It hurts to think that it just might be the absolute pinnacle of entertainment media I'll get to experience in my lifetime. I still patiently await Winds of Winter knowing there's a good chance we will lose George before we ever see an end to the story. I'm glad I found your video reccomended to me as I was taking one of those little trips down memory lane watching the trailers. The title was exactly what I was feeling in that moment.
I can't comprehend how HBO let this show die. Of course, we blame Benioff and D.B. Weiss but I think we are missing the bigger point here. Why not hire new writers? If HBO, Martin and crew of Game Of Thrones really saw that Game Of Thrones needs at least 10 seasons and cannot end on Season 8, why let Dumb and Dumber finish it in the first place? Do they have full rights to the show? I doubt it. If so, organize a strike for them. Do whatever it takes, but don’t end the most popular show in the world, where it's obvious that people will be outraged. People would definitely support HBO in this matter when it comes to renewing the show for at least 10 more seasons. It's strange that HBO didn’t do enough to prevent that stupid 8th season from happening and the show just ended. As if it were some random Netflix show that can be canceled because, well, they can just release 10 more shows to replace it.
@@clownpendotfart What do I mean? Everyone, from the CREATOR of the books to HBO, knows that 8 seasons is incredibly short to wrap up the story properly and beautifully. But Benioff and D.B. Weiss still said: No, we will end it in the 8th season! Didn't anyone question why they were so determined to end Game of Thrones in 8 seasons? And what did these two end up saying in response? Why was it accepted?
@@aKolkaa My understanding is that they said the plan was 7 seasons at the beginning. They compromised with 8 seasons, with the last two having fewer but longer episodes.
Given some of my happiest times in life included reading this really well-written “What if?” fanfiction after working and folding laundry listening to the Sansa preview chapter in winds of winter… this series is still on my mind.
He would have to finish the books for that happen. And we've gone from him planning a three-book series in the pitch letter to having 2 remaining books out of 7 for the past 13 years, still without him having written the Dothraki invasion planned for the middle book of that original trilogy.
Game of Thrones Brotherhood is the perfect way of putting it for the inevitable (hopefully) remake that follows the publication (hopefully) of the last books.
I was literally talking about GoT the other day - about how much I miss when it was good. GoT was a masterpiece until it wasn't. It's hard to remember that
In another timeline we have an incredible Game of Thrones from start to finish (a whole ten seasons), amazing Star Wars sequels and Marvel is still thriving.
Thank you for this video, I feel like no one has pointed out that D and D had a lot more book material to work with but decided to go in a completely different direction.
It has been 13 years since A Dance With Dragons was published, and GRRM still hasn't finished the next book (with one more remaining). Game of Thrones ended years ago, and the prequel series just ended its second season (which aired 2 years after its first). D&D condensed Feast + Dance into a single season (which also included things yet to come, like Shireen), then made multiple seasons without any books to adapt. If they had adapted everything inside Feast + Dance (even though they'd been condensing well before then, though to a lesser extent), they would still exhaust the book material before GRRM could publish more, and have the same problem of an unfinishable story that he currently has.
@@clownpendotfart Fair enough, but still they could’ve given some better endings to some of the characters. Especially characters like Stannis and Selmy where they could’ve at least set up a more interesting plot moving forward. I know the later seasons would never be as good but still feels like a waste of some of the later material that was available at the time.
We all miss it, not just for what it was as a series, but the yearly season of high quality TV that had good characters with meaningful stakes every season for those characters. Before the dark times at the end... Of course
Yeah I was one of those who just didn't understand this genre at all and then really hyper fixated on it after S01E09. The fixation lasted for a good while but I haven't managed to feel that feeling ever since. Its really beautiful and sad to think about it. Now that I think about it, the only other time the whole world was on one page about something was THAT SUMMER when PokemonGo came out. I will never forget that either :(
Finishing something that you love is so weird. After binging LOTR in one say and Snowfall in two weeks, finishing them was like losing a friend or going home from a perfect vacation.
Throw on a pair of headphones, play the intro music, and just take yourself back to when you were about to watch an hour of the best show and not know what you were in store for. It's bliss
I was this way for The Walking Dead. Having read the comics, talking to people after each Sunday, having a Sunday activity in that same way. Then, it too got bad and streaming came along.
GoT was the one show I never watched as it was airing and got told I was crazy for ignoring it. Medieval Fantasy and politics are my least favorite combinations in media so (besides dragons) it didn't have much to offer me. Also my life was not in a place I could freely sit down and catch up. I feel for the fans not getting the show they expected after the last few seasons, and how bad it got. I've seen series I love get worse over time and its hard to go through regardless. How the mighty have fallen...
I feel the same way about AoT except for the part of it not "crashing and burning" like GoT. I watched AoT for roughly a decade, almost half my life. It was really fun to theorize about and it was so sad when it came to a close. If you haven't watched/read it, I'd definitely recommend.
@@ForeverTraitor I remember not knowing that there wasn't another season after the female titan arc until literally the start of the 2020 pandemic. I caught up by the time the trailer for season 4 dropped on May 29th, and created the perfect storm for my obsession with that series.

But you have a great touch to talk about stuff that you're passionate about, and I feel like the investment in some shows, movies and books is amazing.
Is Vinland Saga cancelled? I've heard nothing of season 3. If it won't be renewed I will never forgive the anime community for being all like "where muh action, this is too slow!". I will absolutely die on the hill that season 2 is superior to season 1. It's way more mature, and the characters have room to breathe. My only criticism of it is that it needed more screen time with Canute, but oh well...
If you're into Sci Fi you might wanna give Red Rising a try, saying that it is Game of Thrones in space is an overly simple comparison but it is on the same level of quality.
HoTD season 2 was such a disappointment, my sister and I started a re-watch of GoT. I remember when I got into GoT it was between the hiatus between seasons 3 and 4, and between that time I read all the books. When I first watched season 4, my opinion of it was mixed, and rewatching season 4 it's easy to see why. It feels much more improvised than the previous seasons, there are more added scenes from D&D, some character moments and complex motivations from the books are missing, and there are a few key moments which allude to the ending they have in mind for certain characters. Season 4 is a good season, too! It's season 5 where everyone's character arcs start to diverge completely from the books and into (my opinion) the mundane... the repetitive.. boiled down and unchanging. My heart still hurts when I think of what they did to Dorne. My sister has never seen the entirety of GoT and while watching season 5 she would turn to me and the disappointment would be clear. Raz, as you said, it's hard to watch the first four seasons after knowing what follows them.. it's just not the same, it's blunt where it used to be sharp.

I have struggled to get into the Cosmere. I made the mistake of starting Way of Kings on audiobook, and like...idk trying to listen to a big fantasy book for the first time audio only might just be a terrible idea? I wanna give it another shot though because it'd be nice to read a story that actually has an end lol
@@razbutwo I would say if you struggled with way of kings, it might be better to give mistborn a try instead. That series imo has a more straightforward hook in the plot line that keeps you reading.
@@razbutwo Yeah I have a few friends that bounced of The Way of Kings audiobook. There's just so much to keep track of, so unless you're paying a lot of attention or you're really good at figuring stuff out as it goes it's really easy to get lost. I think Mistborn is probably a better starting point, Warbreaker is also a fun standalone that's available for free if you want to try that. Neither of those has the same epic scope as A Song of Ice and Fire or the Stormlight archive though, so if you want that I think just physically reading The Way of Kings (ebook is totally fine of course) might be better.
I absolutely recommend that you start with Mistborn. Stormlight is great, but it's huge, so you should really try it only after you already trust Brandon.
Another option, if you want a quicker way to get used to his style on a macro level, is to read Legion or the Reckoners trilogy. They’re not fantasy, but they do show how good he is at setting up pieces for a big finish. Mistborn is such a good example of this, and stormlight takes it to new levels, but yeah I took forever to get through those at first, and now stormlight’s my favorite series (as well as Kingkiller). Just had to get used to it
You might like the Expanse. It's over now, (at least for the moment) but the six seasons that are out do a great job of capturing the books, though it does suffer a little bit in the beginning.
during house of the dragon, i kept watching daenerys scenes on youtube bc they are such impactful and powerful scenes. i still get chills when she becomes a dragon rider and when she obtains the unsullied. it was pure magic!
As someone who hasn't read the books I'd rank the seasons as follows: Seasons 1-4: Perfect Seasons 5 & 6: Still great (especially 6) Season 7: Okay-ish Season 8: Terrible I really miss GoT as well... It used to be my favorite TV show but the last two seasons really destroyed it all. It was so much fun following the story because it felt like it transcended being a TV show and genuinely turned into a global event whenever a new season started.
I sometimes rewatch the first four seasons and then pretend it ended there.
It was unfortunately canceled in its prime😢
I did this last time i rewatched it lol then i watched battle of basterds on youtube

@@SeemsLogicalThe Sopranos is credited by many as being THE first show to be one of those “shows with masterful writing with hour long episodes that EVERYONE watched and lasted for multiple seasons over the span of nearly a decade.”
Like you said, aside from Lost and GOT, there weren’t many other shows that lived up to that.
You got me thinking of Dallas ( who shot JR? That laid the streets empty) but also years later House of Cards.

@@Tyrisalthan That happened *way* before Game of Thrones ended.

That may seem pathetic to some people but I loved that show. I loved theorizing, I loved the hot takes and discussions with people.

The thing that baffles me the most about GOT is that streamers didn’t try to release more of their flagship shows weekly or at least in small batches per week.
This is the butterfly effect GRRM talked about in his blog
I disagree. Given that there’s no books I think what we got makes perfect sense
It took me a minute to realize TWOW stands for The Winds of Winter rather than Ten Words of Wisdom in this case
this is true but the show went off the rails when they got to the point where the books add half a dozen new major characters and plotlines that are just left hanging. it's obvious fAegon and Dorne were supposed to be a huge thing but it was unclear how these stories were going to be resolved (still unclear a decade later).
My secret hope is that Game of Thrones gets a brotherhood type remake.

It wasn't _as_ bad with FMA because the time up until the changes was much shorter, for GoT I think it would be much worse.
keep hoping lol

GOT is one of those shows that will get a remake in 20-30 years like some of the 80s and 90s shows
Definitely
The unforunate part is tv shows are shit nowadays because people involved in making tv shows aren't hired for their skills they are hired because they are progressive and check DEI boxes (diversity equity inclusion) and actors are cast that way too. Tv shows can't be made like they were in the 2010's anymore and this is why there are no good shows coming out anymore. The golden age of TV shows is dead and it most likely will be even worse in the future.
And the remakes will suck, but we will watch anyway...
@@kingslayer011ur crazy. Way too much tv for their not to be good shows. This is not the days of 13 channels.
The most incredible part is how the internet did not spoil the red wedding considering it was known for a few years now
@@jocas94that is a really good point. All I remember seeing from people in the know was "oh, next week is going to be good, your in for a real treat. You need to watch"

After a few episodes im sure you realized Robb wasnt going to make it 8 seasons.
Yeah that shit's never cool. I unsubbed Mauler specifically for spoiling who becomes king before the episode dropped. So unnecessary.
BUT...

I'm so glad that you also see that the show went downhill well before season 8. I was very close to quitting the show in season 7 after a disappointing season 6, but figured that I might as well finish the series out because that's what the people around me wanted to do.
I actually remember liking Season 6 much more than 5, although I'd have to rewatch them to confirm.

I will just NEVER forgive what they ended up doing with Dany’s story. It hurts even more when you’ve read the books and know what she’s had to over come and how much she grew in strength to become the Mother Of Dragons. Such a disservice to such a brilliant character.

Man, same thing. I am so happy that I got into this universe, and I will rewatch it until the end of my days.
Sundays were so different, the excitement of waiting for the new episode that night was like nothing else.

Just finished GoT for the first time about 3 weeks ago!!! Loved the hell out of it.
Sometimes I just go watch the trailers for seasons 2 and 3 and feel some of the rush come back from that time. I have watched a lot of shows that I like since Game of Thrones but nothing that compares at all to the hype of those days. Being so excited for every Sunday...

Maybe not full rights, but I wouldn't rule out something in their contract saying they couldn't be replaced against their will.

I don't know man, he might be joining Kentaro up there before he finishes another page.

Brienne’s continued bad luck and disfigurement in the books were much more compelling
The background songs were so good..the themesongs were insanely immersive
Hoping Raz reads Brandon Sandersons Cosmere and makes a video about that.
Just had to get used to it
Thank you for reminding me of how much I, too, miss all of it. You didn't waste a second of time.
You might like the Expanse. It's over now, (at least for the moment) but the six seasons that are out do a great job of capturing the books, though it does suffer a little bit in the beginning.
Yeah the expanse is excellent Imo definitely a great sci fi
during house of the dragon, i kept watching daenerys scenes on youtube bc they are such impactful and powerful scenes. i still get chills when she becomes a dragon rider and when she obtains the unsullied. it was pure magic!
As someone who hasn't read the books I'd rank the seasons as follows:
Seasons 1-4: Perfect
Seasons 5 & 6: Still great (especially 6)
Season 7: Okay-ish
Season 8: Terrible
I really miss GoT as well... It used to be my favorite TV show but the last two seasons really destroyed it all. It was so much fun following the story because it felt like it transcended being a TV show and genuinely turned into a global event whenever a new season started.
Can't we just take a beat for the fact that it seems Raz read a 20-30hr book in a week. Respect brother.
