The small detail of Stan sighing and then turning around with a showman's voice is so heartbreaking
You can just feel the self hatred in what he’s about to do
And in present time, it was clearly a mask to hide his real pain.
In a way, it is like how in Batman, Bruce Wayne hides the grief and anger he feels
not just behind his literal Batman mask, but his Playboy Bruce Persona that isn't the real Bruce Wayne.
He realizes it’s the only chance he has to make money at that point and find the funds to get the machine working.
What one does out of hunger
Imagine all of the self hatred he felt throughout the years of trying to get his brother back, using his scamming tricks and basically stealing his brother's name and life
at 1:53 in the bottom left corner, you can see Physic text books. That means Stan actually sat down and tried to teach him self physics. A man that cheated and flunked all through highschool actually sat down to try and learn physics just get his brother back.
Might be fords old book and he moved them. Nice to think about tho
You can’t just fix a portal by knowing nothing. He probably tried to learn it so that he could fix the portal to bring Ford back.
@@brickabang thats what the comment said tho ;-;
The sad part is that it didnt matter how much he learned; Ford was abnormally smart and even creating the portal was beyond him, the knowledge had to come from Bill, as it seems humans just weren't advanced enough to build it yet.
@@N7spongy atleast he succeeded and well atleast make portal hole to bring ford back
I do love that Stan made himself employee of the month, but after Soos joined the staff he was made employee of the year instead of Stan still just giving it to himself.
Aw I just noticed it. That's so cute
Remember - Stan self-taught himself enough physics to repair the portal, while running a successful business
He is built diffrent
This shows that Ford isn't the only genius in the family and that he's one of these "brilliant but lazy" types like Mabel. If they put in the effort, they could be just as smart as their brothers.

SquatBenchDeadlift your brother got stuck in a portal too?
Did you also steal someones life and fake a car crash?
I didnt
You're a con artist?
I really love Stan's tragic character development in this season as a whole. All because of one mistake he was disowned by his family, lost his only friend to travel the world alone spending a good portion of it in prison til he eventually has to fake his own death and sever all connections completely. He was Stanford for over 30 years and now he may lose that. Good stuff.
The only thing I question is whether or not Dipper and Mabel were never told about Stanley by their grand mother (Stan and Ford's sister) because of the disownment or because he was (killed) in a car crash.
Stan and Ford don't have a sister
+Thunder Goku They might not have a sister but they do have sibling
Thunder Goku
Yeah, I messed up, I rewatched this episode the other day, Stan said Shermy (which is most likely short for Sherman), but at the time I thought Stan said "Shirley".
actually he didn't cause the mistake. in the clip where he messes it up, he manages to fix it and it's working fine again. people think blendin went back in time and caused that as revenge to dipper and mabel
+heytheresawolfinminecraft I doubt that, Remember Blendin was send away, in a jail also his equipment was taken away like the time watch thing (sorry can't remember what that thing was.) so he can't go back in time without it.
Explains why Stan runs away when he brings up her eye on a date.

The only reason stan wants money so much its because his dad made him that way
And he had to pay the mortgage somehow
Try just being hungry for B R E A D
Yeah, when he kicked him out his dad said he wasnt allowed to step foot into their house until he made a fortune.
It would have been cool to see a episode or comic where Stanley reunites with his father showing him all the money he earned but, due to Stanley’s age Flibrick (his father) might not even be alive but, you never know.
@@outre111 I mean their dad is probably dead
1:46 you can even see the trees growing slightly
woah thats attention to detail right there
That's amazing! Gravity Falls is a literal masterpiece!
watching this made me realize that you can see physics and science textbooks in the bottom left at 1:52, implying that stan went out of his way to learn something way outside of his area of expertise just to understand what ford was doing so he could presumably read and comprehend his notes, and properly operate the portal.
Summary: Stan got angry at Stan because Stan ruined Stans' chance to get into a good school, but Stan didn't want Stan to leave Stan but Stan wanted to go. So Stan got angry at Stan and Stan was forced to leave Stan. Then a while later Stan invited Stan to come to Stan but only to get away from Stan, so Stan was angry at Stan again and Stan didn't want to leave Stan so Stan and Stan got into a fight and Stan accidentally pushed Stan into Stan's machine so Stan was trying to help Stan come back.
Tl;dr: Stan Stan for trying to bring back his twin brother Stan back because Stan is a stan of not only scientific stuff, but specifically anything bizarre. So might as well stan Stan for bringing back Stan.

Lol
bruh it was there the whole series
It's touching/tragic how he invested 30 year's worth in sweat blood and tears to getting that portal running again, but he did kind of endanger the universe, and it could be said that he ultimately really profited from having his brother out of the picture and having this opportunity to throw off his debtors, so there's a lot of ambiguity to it all.
I wouldn't say it was out of malice. Stan's main goal was going to get Ford back n he needed a stable income to get by, but he had too much of a bad record on his own name so while it may not have been the most ethical decision, the situation was warranted. He had to use Ford's name for the time being because having people know about his disappearance would just cause more trouble than necessary n if Stan was arrested for it, then he may have never had time to fix the portal leaving Ford trapped in the multi dimension forever.
@@syrusangi8743 💯
I'd say that throwing debtors to the side was just a very big side benefit to the whole thing
Yeah, but he also had to fake his own death and make his sister and parents believe he was dead for decades
It was great that they showed Stan really cares about his employees and gave Soos Employee of the Year

@@homersupremist15 Which character again?
Looking back, I wonder how the Pines Parents coped with all this: the last time they saw Stanley was when they threw him out when he was like 18 (?), didn't hear a word from him in ten years until the news of his "death" in car accident. Then there's Stanford who went away to study and live at the other side of the US map, as he probably didn't keep in touch that much considering how absorbed and busy he was with his research. And when Stanley assumed his brother's identity, I wonder if he ever went to their parents' funeral... probably not, 'cause their parents would have recognized him, I'm sure. And if that's the case, how freaking sad is that?
I like to think that they regretted throwing Stan for the rest of their lives, that they wished he would come back home no matter how successful or poorly he did. That they were probably devastated at the news of his death, so much that even Mr Pines' "tough guy act"would have crumbled apart for once. And I can easily picture Mrs Pines (and her husband too actually) doting on Shermie to compensate for everything they've done wrong. I believe Shermie must have been the only link between their parents and brothers for a long time.
About Shermie Pines, it has always bothered me that he was barely mentioned in the whole show. Dipper and Mabel never talked about him at all, and the Stan twins never talked about seeing him again. It made me feel that he was either dead by the time (or waaay before) Mabel and Dipper went to Gravity Falls, or maybe, hopefully, he's alive and well and lives close to them in California. But I don't believe in the latter that much: too good to be true.
What do you guys think? (Thanks and good job for reading this far!)
Caramelle Salley
Hmm come to think of it, imagine if Filbrick and Ma Pines found out about what Stanley did though
Imagine how pissed they'd be at him
Meanwhile Ford just went through portal and he just adopted the "I guess this is my life now. Gotta stop Bill." attitude
I still feel super sorry for Stanley though, all he really wanted was not to be separated from Ford and unfortunately life just led to that happening
Meanwhile Ford just wanted to have some sort of a great accomplishment in his life and yet, that didn't go well for him either
All in all, that whole mess just came to be because 2 guys were far too stubborn to talk it out on time
And don't even get me started on Shermie
A part of me is hoping that Alex will clear that up in the future
Caramelle Salley i don't think his parents would recognise him at THEIR funeral being dead and all... Maybe if only one was dead but when both were dead no one would be left to recognise him
Actually the parents most likely survived and met stan later on.

It’s crazy to think that everyone was wholesome prior to Stan’s arrival
I’m from the future. I’ll let you know that thanks to the Book of Bill website, we got more details about his past in Gravity Falls. And it’s even sadder. When he faked his death, only his mom and an IRS agent showed up to his funeral (which funnily enough, he whispered at his corpse “It’s not over.”). The dad never showed up, showing that he’s never forgiven him from that incident. Really shows how Stanley has been mostly alone throughout his life after that night. It’s so heartbreaking.
This was probably one of my favorite episodes tbh it was amazing
same here my fav was the origin of the mystery shack and all the characters when they were young and the dusk 2 dawn owners before they died
That's true, it is. It really shows a lot of background and character development, as to where most cartoon series don't give this much info about it's characters.
I wonder if he attended his own funeral, assuming there was one in the first place. not sure which of those possibilities is more depressing.
Ye im pretty sure he didn’t have a funeral and i do find this more depressing
Recently it was revealed and its just as depressing as you think. He did have a funeral, and only his mom and his tax collector arrived. The latter only coming to mock his grave. So his dad chose not to come.
@@incidentalreelzMay I ask where was that info mentioned? The book of Bill? What page?
I like the fact that it wasn't Ford's experiments that everyone liked and Stan profited off of but rather it was Stan's own twists on them and imagination that caused the Mystery Shack's sucess, giving the idea that Stan can survive and flourish on his own and isn’t reliant on his brother to be successful unlike what his father and Bill and others have said.
I love the detail. The old couple running the shop is the same ghosts that harass the teens.

For everyone wondering, the most likely timeline given the little details we have been given in the show & interviews is that Stan and Ford are the younger siblings of Shermy. The baby in the flashback is Dipper and Mables Parent, and that that baby is being watched by Ma pines because shermy is out of the picture, possibly in Vietnam because it’s that time in US history (possibly had kid out of wedlock? Cause they NEVER mention a grandma). Shermy would have either died in Vietnam or died before the series due to being older & stan doesn’t mention it in front of the kids because that’s their grandpa. The kids are from California meaning that their parent on stans side either was raised their by Shermy, or moved after being raised by Stan’s parents. Stan being disowned and Ford being a recluse would mean that Shermy if still alive wouldn’t mention them much, and Ma and Pa pines definitly wouldn’t have because they are that kind of family. By the time Dipper and Mabel enter the picture, nobody would have mentioned Stan in a long time, and Ford would have been considered a “distant relative”. I hope this clears some stuff up
When you realize the parents send the kids to Stanford and never Stanley so they were never meant to meet Stanley
Stan used his brother's name for 30 years, it's fair to assume that their parents only knew their father as Stanford
Did you both forget that
a) Stanley faked his own death
b) Stanley and Stanford are Grand Uncles to the twins
1:54 the newspaper on the top right
The reason it says Murder Hut is because he said he named it Murder Hut to Mystery Shack
knowing science, physic and math... It'll BE HELL of a study for Stan.
I imagine that in his quest to get the portal running again he would need to understand the "basics" of it. Stan only had Journal 1 the location of Journal 2 and 3 were unknown at the time so he only had the instructions of the 1st Journal which I imagine was concepts.
@@planderlinde1969 it's still amazing that in the past 30 years, Stan was a dumbass who could barely hold a job and was deep in debt, and then present day Stan is a freaking genius since he managed to make a successful business and even start up an interdimensional portal. Amazing.
So I came up with a plan. I couldn't leave my brother's house until I figured out how to save him, but I needed to pay his mortgage somehow.

He's better than me because I would've gone no contact or remind Ford I'd been paying the bills for the past 30 years and that it could legally be considered my property.
This makes it more sense I want a part 2
What hurts the most about his backstory is that he didn't even directly touch Ford's machine. He didn't do it on purpose and didn't want to hurt Ford.
0:50 I feel like stan lying about his name is the only reason Dipper ans Mabel actually went to gravity falls
He most likely used the car crash, and subsequent funeral as a way to reconnect with his family, specifically his sister. Who he hadn't seen since she was a baby. Its also fair to assume Ford never told anyone where he was, considering he progressively became more isolated.
TLDR; stan used his new identity, and subsequent death to reconnect with his family. Thats why his nice/nephew knew he lived in gravity falls.
