I cry the most at watching her being so conflicted. She's been put in a position where she doesn't know what she should do, whose voice she should listen to. Logic (Dipper) vs. heart (Stan). It's soul-crushingly heartbreaking.

@@diegodubber2140 also there's a theory that Stan and Ford are twisted versions of Mabel and Dipper if they keep growing apart. Mabel and Stan being more heart and Dipper and Ford being more logic. It just makes it more heartbreaking for her to have to chose between her brother who she has had her whole life or a twisted future version of herself

The gravity in this scene when there's (literally speaking) no gravity.... Easily my favorite scene of the show. It's so perfect. The music, the betrayal, the issues regarding trust, and most of all the author's identity. I've seen this scene a few times now, but it still makes something clench in my chest. Perfectly mastered, brilliantly done!

I remember this premiering, and I totally flipped out. At school the next day, I saw one of my friends who happened to love the show, and she was with one of our other friends. The minute she saw me she ran up to me and we were just like OH MY GOSH and totally fan-girling over it for at least five minutes. Our poor other friend; he doesn't even watch the show, so he was just awkwardly standing there.

[2:00] "Look into my eyes, Mabel: you really think I'm a bad guy?!" Just his face and the way he says that... You feel exactly what both Stan and Mabel are feeling in this moment: despair and sadness in the former, insecurity and heartbreak in the latter. While all Dipper can feel is pure, utter betrayal. It's just sad all of this, the way he's outright *begging* her to just trust him.

I never really knew that much about or watch the show nor much of Disney channel (to clarify, I did know about Disney channel, but, I'm farily certain that I just didn't really watch the channel much), until practically after the show ended. I did see a few things regarding commercials and snippets of the show, but again, I never really watched it until it ended. A few instances, like when stan and ford switched clothes to trick bill, I did see that little scene when it played out on tv I think when it aired on tv originally, and I sort of knew that they'd both do that to trick bill. I do happen to have the DVD box set of the show. Edit: to clarify what I said about the whole clothing thing and not watching much of Disney channel. I mean, my 2 younger sisters watched shows on that channel, so, I would often find them doing that, and, I would sometimes see the show's that they'd watch such as jessie, and, ok, what I said about me not watching what was on that channel for the most part is true, but, there were times that I would watch a few small minutes or so every once in a great while something that my sisters were watching, but for the most part, there was not much that interested me on that channel that I'd voluntarily put the TV on that channel. I did at times see commercials for some episodes of gravity falls, such as the season one finale. Regarding the clothing swap, I did see where Stanly and Ford were asking each other what to do, and a few other minutes included between them and when stanly (dressed as ford) made the deal with bill. When stan asked what other choice they had, I made the comment about changing clothes, and, the scene came and I realized I was right.

You know, a few years ago, Man of Actions studios (showing how respectful they are) responded to criticism to Ultimate Spider-Man saying that people shouldn't expect a show by Disney on a Disney owned network to be good, that it's geared towards children and doesn't need to be quality.
Gravity Falls, which aired the same year and targets the same audience as Ultimate Spider-Man, with episodes like Not What He Seems, is the counter argument. That just because it's geared towards children, doesn't mean it can't have quality writing and acting. Just because it's Disney doesn't mean it can't be good. And just because you have silly stuff like Soos getting poked in the stomach, Dipper and Pacifica's awkward hug and Mabel's hallucinations from expired candy, doesn't mean it can't also be a show that has good emotional moments. This episode is strong, not just with elements of betrayal, trust and secrecy, but it's even structured differently than other episodes. This scene in particular only has levity until the very end, after over 3 minutes of real drama and seriousness. And a lot of credit needs to be given to Jason Ritter and Kristen Schaal for their acting, respectively showing Dipper's anger and Mabel's broken heart of Grunkle Stan's going behind their backs.

PlainWhiteSoul which is why Dipper and Mabel are the best team. Their polarizing personalities balance each other out. Dipper is The Brain (rational, cynical, and realist), Mabel is The Heart (optimist, impulsive, and values feelings and emotions). And, unlike many TV shows, where the twins are on each other’s necks only with a few heartwarming moments, they love each other and they show it, and even if they fight, it lasts almost 5 minutes before they make up

If anyone can change my mind, I'd be well and truly astonished.

Especially because of what we learn about him in the next episode. Someone DID think that and cast him out on the spot without him even getting to breathe a word to explain himself. What hurts the most is that we're talking about HIS OWN FATHER. He is pretty much fearing that it's happening again, that history will repeat itself and that he will left completely alone in a miserable, lousy, lonely wreck of a life with even the last family he has left turning their backs on him out of mistrust. It's just heartbreaking to learn all the heartache this man had suffered, to learn that aside from the twins, his few friends and his shack, he's been pretty much left with nothing and no one.

Gravity Falls is perfect as it is, but if I could, I would add another season, splitting Season two from this episode. Add nine more episodes before “Not what he seems” and make them the new season two, to further explore the mysteries of the other two journals, as we never really got to know what’s in them; then add ten more episodes after “A tale of two Stans” and before “Dipper and Mable vs the future” as the new season three, which will primarily focus on adventuring with the author of the journals, as well as exploring the Pines family relationships.
