My personal theory is that the Shapeshifter is somewhat aware of the other timelines where the Pines twins don't return home (referenced in the Book of Bill), and happened to remember a timeline where Pacifica didn't open the town gate, basically telling Dipper about that timeline either as intimidation, or they got the timelines wrong.
That would be really cool, But where's the evidence for him being able to look at other timelines tho! Just because he can shapeshift doesn't mean he can predict the future of an alternate timeline yknow?
@MrMMMatter That is true, however, if memory serves me correctly, the Shapeshifter had read the journals without Ford's permission, perhaps something within one of the journals could have talked about such timelines... Another interesting thing to note, the shapeshifter KNEW that ford was the author, and yet took a different form than Ford... and instead took the form of a bean mascot. The Shapeshifter might have known far more than they let on, and knew taking on the form of Ford, for one reason or another, might have led to their plans failing, so they instead chose someone who looked similar to Ford
@@MrMMMatter and just because he can shapeshift doesn't mean he can predict the future in general - meaning he could've either just been talking about random stuff and didn't really know what he was talking about, and just said it to scare dipper, or the shapeshifter CAN predict the future of an alternate timeline - and he isn't just an intelligent shapeshifting creature.

I see to potential canon explanations 1. The shape shifter the screaming pose that dipper instinctively would 2. Dipper thought he'd die and subconsciously remembered the shape shifter
I read in a comment once that the shapeshifter could see as far into the future as the character it takes form of. So it looked to the nearest point in time when Dipper’s heart stopped beating, assuming this was when Dipper’s death was. I’ve heard other theories about alternative timelines described in the Book of Bill which may also have a connection here.
Another point is that Dipper’s clothes are completely different. Maybe Dipper just thought that was the moment the shapeshifter meant and went ‘welp, this is my destiny. Might as well give in to the prophecy.’ And assumed the death pose? Then again, there are quite a few plot holes in Gravity Falls (the baby/shermie, literally nobody realising that Stanley took Ford’s identity, what happened to fiddleford’s wife, etc.) so it might just be one of those things.

I actually would argue there are a lot of these unanswered questions, they are just easy to not consider. Here are some examples… In the episode “society of the blind eye”, we see mcgucket’s memories that he makes a triangle around his eye with his hand (clearly referencing bill) long after he’d already erased his memories of the portal. In the show, the prophecy of the zodiac never actually occurs. Bill is not defeated using the zodiac like the prophecy stated. It is never explained why McGucket went crazy after seeing the dimension, but ford did not. And if they weren’t the same dimension, than it is not explained why the tear in space opened up to bill’s dimension. Are Stan and ford supposed to be identical twins? Because Stanley clearly doesn’t have six fingers There are just a bunch of stuff that has always been a bit strange, that can only be explained if you stretch things a bit
Yes agreed great points and sometimes things are made to be cool not to demystify the zodiac but Alex himself said he just wanted a cool image in the opening song and put it in. Only after the fans went crazy trying to solve it did he put it into the plot hence why it didn't work
My theory: The shape shifter knows how dipper would react if he ever got frozen, hence the pose, so he doesnt just copy peoples looks, but also their mind and thoughts ext. So when dipper got turned to wood, thats why he went into that pose, but this wasnt the future shapeshifter was talking about, hes actually talking about the final with bill cipher. If everyone remembers, bill cipher was turning people to stole. So the shapeshifter meant if he keeps digging, bill cipher will end up being released and turn him to stone and he'd take that pose, but instead bill decided not to turn dipper to stone and left him for those 2 monsters to eat him, changing the fate of dipper making the shape shifter wrong
what i think is the shapeshifter wasn't seeing into the future, he just new his last moments would be filled with cowardice. his determination to solve all the mysteries would eventually do him in, and when it would, he would feel nothing but fear.
I think I figured it out. Apparently there was going to be some future thing and I assume the shape shifted would have something to do with it but the script changed and Alex Hirsch probably left it in as a mystery to be solved by the fans. My second theory is that Alex Hirsch intended on having a multi verse of some sort for season 3 but just scraped the idea and again left the scene as a mystery for the fans.
I believe that he the shapeshifter has ciphervoyance (the ability that bill uses to see different versions of the future) and saw a future where that is Dippers final form and told it to dipper to try and scare and intimidate him
Do you guys remember the bill cipher is king the titan from TOH? I wanted to say that theory was kind of plausible at first but then the book of bill came out and now that theory is completely disproven.
Hm. I think that the shapeshifter can see the future, maybe in a way that he can see the lives of ppl or idk. He saw that the pine tree turned to wood and DIE. When Paz opened the gates, Dipper got freed... but is it really the same dipper? I promptly believe, that Dipper died in that moment and got *resurrected* after that. He has he exact same memories and experiences, because his body was probably restarted after he got unfrozen, but that would be another dipper. Exact same memories, exact same experiences, exact same behaviors, but it's no longer "him". I believe that this is how it works irl, and now i see how this is an explanation to the prophecy the shapeshifter gave. We don't see the difference, but the dipper (and mabel) who went on a vacation to gravity falls, came back as their exact copies, probably not knowing that "they" died. I think i'll make a post on reddit wih my theory, i think it makes a lot of sense. You say that shapeshifter can shapeshift, but that doesn't mean he can predict future. You are correct, but if he could, this theory makes sense, right?
i disagree, i do think this is the same dipper and mabel unlike in other cartoons where the character dies, then has a copy of their body rebuilt nearby like in dead end paranormal park and amphibia which kinda shows 'oh that's a clone of this character', dippers body is the exact same, it's made of the same molecules, same position, same brain, same heart, same everything, it's not even a ship of thesus situation, it's literally just, physically dipper, and if souls are needed and or have a noticeable affect on a body without them, dipper clearly has a soul as he has literally zero change in behaviour after this episode, so presumably his soul got returned at the same time, philosophically, it has to be dipper i mean- is somebody being cryogenically frozen and then unfrozen killing them? is freezing somebody's body in time for a few hours and then unfreezing their body killing them? both of these stop their heart and cease consciousness, but i wouldn't say so, at worst it'd be like going into a deep thoughtless sleep for a bit, then waking up later, and more likely just one moment you're about to sleep, the next you're awake
My theory is that it really is not dipper anymore, but a copy who believes he is genuinely dipper. The lumberjack was working with the Northwests, who were explicitly given the credit for founding Gravity Falls, except they didn't and it was Quentin. Given that there seems to be a family precedent for bargaining with corrupt entities for power (the northwest dad guy whose name I don't know literally bargain to be Billiam fucking Cipher's assistant in Weirdmaggedon, etc), the NorthWests could have also colluded with the Government since ages back and actively agreed to assist with government coverups, such as the existence of Quentin or the entire spectrum of Weirdness in gravity falls. Since the shapeshifter was connected to Stanford, he may have made this connection to the government not wanting these things to be made public through government coverups (like with Quentin) as a bystander to Fords' own discoveries. There could be a government precedent for replacing witnesses with exact clones too, in a sort of "society of the blind eye" way, which the lumberjack, having worked for and with potential government colluders for ages before being betrayed, would have learned how to do.
I think it could be explained by Pacificas change that no one expected her to change because it came from deep within her maybe he couldn’t predict it since it was such a deep down change no one expected and if true it would have been the last form he ever took also he specifically would not have met/found the author
I always just thought that he was trying to scare Dipper. Sort of a, I can't win, but I'll make sure you can never appreciate your victory. The pose and reused scream feels more like a reuse of assets. The show was animated in Korea, if I remember correctly, so it's not like Alex Hirsch was in the animator's room, going over every frame and pose. I wouldn't even be surprised if he didn't notice the connection. The fact that the mansion episode wasn't really related to Ford, and that it's never brought up again, I really don't think there was anything to see. I don't know, those are just my two cents.
I assume something in the script changed between the shapeshifter and the finale. The only other time it would make sense for Dipper to become a statue is from Bill himself near the end of the show. The original draft of the story may have had this happen but when it was changed they realized that they now had a setup with no payoff and stuck it in Northwest Mansion Mystery just to sate the audience. If that's the case though, it clearly failed because this video exists.
It is said the shapeshifter has a connection to the extraterrestrials that landed in Gravity Falls. What their species was capable of exactly isn’t exactly clear (aside from, well, shape shifting). Only Ford and Fiddleford would have known its capabilities from extensive studying of the creature.
There has been a theory for years that fortune tellers can only see vague images of the future. So he probably saw the pose and Dipper making that noise, and the rest he just made up to scare him.
maybe when dipper was turned to wood his soul was transfered to another timeline, one where pacifica pulled the lever. and before he turned to wood, he was in the timeline where she didnt
he’s talking about the ghost episode when dipper was in that position when he got turned into a tree I think that’s what it was I think the shapeshifter can predict the future a little bit, like up to the northwest mansion thing when he hadn’t met the author at that point
Yeah, I'm not really satisfied by any of the answers I see. Like saying the Shape shifter is mildly psychic, when nothing else in the episode suggests that. Or this is just the form Dipper would instinctively take if he was about to die. Like, that's so specific to how he would die. He wouldn't be posed that way if he was crushed by a d20 against Probabilitor or if he and Mabel had dropped from that shone head during the election. The Shape shifter would still need some kind of future sight because there's just no telling how Dipper would die when his life is this dangerous. And usually when he's in danger, he's holding onto Mabel, or shielding her as best he can. That's instinctual for Dipper too. Honestly I just don't think there is a good in-universe answer for this. Which hey, when you're making a weekly cartoon show with an overarching story, some things are going to slip through the cracks. Gravity Falls is not perfect, but it's still one of the best shows I've ever seen.
If I remember correctly... One of the Bad End timelines Bill showed in the Book of Bill, it had them as Statues in the finale's alternative. Where they got frozen in the same pose, wearing the same clothes. So if he somehow DID have the ability to see some random future, that might have been the timeline he saw.
Well I assume what the shapeshifter means is that if dipper wanted to find the author, he would have had to open the portal, leaving the World even more vulberable to Bill. And bill, as we all know in the end, froze all people of gravity falls into stone. I assume what the shapeshifter is alluding to is that by bringing Ford back, you also play into bills plan which would Result in bill freezing everyone in stone, likely dipper in the same shape as he seems to be somewhat predetermined to take that pose
When the shapeshifter says he hasn't been himself in years he could be referring to stan taking over fords identity or maybe when a secret bill being in control of him reference
Imo, the answer is quite simple: it was Pacifica pulling the lever that changed Dipper’s fate. Remember what the lumberjack said: “Just one way to change your fates, a Northwest must open the party gates.” Dipper was not supposed to really survive that. But it was because of Pacifica changing her own fate and becoming better that everyone else’s at the party’s were too. So I think that was the shapeshifter looking at that one potential fate in store and using it to define Dipper’s future. That’s just how I perceive it, anyways!
Years ago, based on the Northwest Mansion Mystery episode I made a theory that while Dipper doesn’t die in the show, the shapeshifter mentioning that it would be the last form he would ever take and it being suspiciously accurate meant that he would perish shortly after the show’s conclusion. As you mentioned, Dipper didn’t die in Northwest Mansion Mystery, therefore it wasn’t his last form. The frozen dipper also looks roughly the same age as the dipper in the show meaning that if the shapeshifter could accurately see the future it could be hinting that his death would come very soon after the events of Wierdmageddon due to an unknown cause. However, that could just be chocked up to the shapeshifter imitating dippers appearance at that moment.
After looking at the Book of Bill (dozens of times, I freaking love it), and Journal 3 (also a favorite), I concluded that the Shapeshifter is actually connected to Journal 2, aka Gideon's Journal, and acts as a Seer of sorts.
I think what the shapeshifter said to Dipper was meant to be taken as a possibility NOT a fate. Like he’s saying if you keep digging this CAN happen and that will be the last form you take IF it does happen NOT saying it necessarily WILL happen and this WILL be the last form you take WHEN it does
(spoiler warning for anyone who doesn't know who the author is) 3:04 The shapeshifter says "that six-fingered nerd hasn't been himself in 30 years", which implies he's been watching Grunkle Stan thinking it was Ford after the latter disappeared all those years ago.
The shapeshifter may have been from a different timeline. a timeline in which the lumberjack ghost isn't defeated and we already know that time travel exist in this world. we also know multiple dimensions exist in this world so it's not that far fetched
Nah, the shape shifter was just trying to get them to stop by acting like he had information they didn't, hoping they'd let him out again. And Dipper being wodd-ified int hat same pose was just the team reusing prior assets to same time and budget. The reverb is a pretty common thing to add onto people getting frozen in a kinda scary way, regardless of genre, media type, or method of freezing/paralyzing/stone-ifying/etc. There is no mystery. Just because the show isin the mystery genre doesn't mean EVERYTHING has to be a mystery, let alone tie into the main mystery.
It’s easily solved somehow the future changed bc of dipper remembering the sight of that monster and that made him act differently to the other timelines

You are correct, but if he could, this theory makes sense, right?
i disagree, i do think this is the same dipper and mabel
unlike in other cartoons where the character dies, then has a copy of their body rebuilt nearby like in dead end paranormal park and amphibia which kinda shows 'oh that's a clone of this character', dippers body is the exact same, it's made of the same molecules, same position, same brain, same heart, same everything, it's not even a ship of thesus situation, it's literally just, physically dipper, and if souls are needed and or have a noticeable affect on a body without them, dipper clearly has a soul as he has literally zero change in behaviour after this episode, so presumably his soul got returned at the same time, philosophically, it has to be dipper
i mean- is somebody being cryogenically frozen and then unfrozen killing them? is freezing somebody's body in time for a few hours and then unfreezing their body killing them? both of these stop their heart and cease consciousness, but i wouldn't say so, at worst it'd be like going into a deep thoughtless sleep for a bit, then waking up later, and more likely just one moment you're about to sleep, the next you're awake
Your shapeshifter impression goes hard.
Thanks! lol
The real mystery is if Dipcifica ever happens. I’m hoping for it
and how can shapeshifter know that ford isnt himself for 30 years if he was trapped there the whole time
There has been a theory for years that fortune tellers can only see vague images of the future. So he probably saw the pose and Dipper making that noise, and the rest he just made up to scare him.
But could the Shapshifter be a fortune teller!
maybe when dipper was turned to wood his soul was transfered to another timeline, one where pacifica pulled the lever. and before he turned to wood, he was in the timeline where she didnt
Best sponsored video ever.
I more believe that he was aware of Bill existence. So just predicted he will get frozen by him. The pose with the wood statue for me is a coincidence
We have a wood dipper and an ice dipper. WHO COMES WITH ME TO FIND THE FIRE AND WIND DIPPER AND MAKE THE DIPPER AVATAR
he’s talking about the ghost episode when dipper was in that position when he got turned into a tree
I think that’s what it was
I think the shapeshifter can predict the future a little bit, like up to the northwest mansion thing when he hadn’t met the author at that point
I believe the Shapeshifter is referring to Bill and the statues.
It looks a bit like when bill did a impression of dipper in three seconds
what if the solution to this mystery was the friends that we made along the way?
The correct answer lol
If I remember correctly...
One of the Bad End timelines Bill showed in the Book of Bill, it had them as Statues in the finale's alternative.
Where they got frozen in the same pose, wearing the same clothes.
So if he somehow DID have the ability to see some random future, that might have been the timeline he saw.

1:51 lol tbh i actual use Pinetree/Pinecone as my Alternative Swear Words
Awesome! lol
Defeated sevral timez
He thought he was dying and subconsciously took the form the shape shifter said he would
Well I assume what the shapeshifter means is that if dipper wanted to find the author, he would have had to open the portal, leaving the World even more vulberable to Bill.
I think it could be dippers "freeze" pose and that the shapeshifter noticed it or smth
That's the theory I believe too
He has approximate knowledge of many things
Fire video
Thank you!
@@MrMMMatter all your videos are supper nice quality. If you just keep grinding, I’m sure more people will notice you 😀
Yes he Is VERY underrated@@C-4-fs1vg
My theory is that Pacifica is simply a god! She altered the timeline.
Maybe Bill told him or showed him sonething somehow
I know what he said he was talking about dipper dying
good job
the shapeshifter is an alien is the reason i guess??????????
Alien predict future alternate timelines somewhat?????? 👽👽👽👽👽👽👽👽👽👽👽👽👽👽👽👽👽
@@MrMMMatter real
Gravity Falls is coming back
Good!
It could have been a curse instead of a prediction idk ┐( ∵ )┌
Ooh good point
That'd be cray cray
My theory is that it's only a coincidence due to foreshadowing by the animators.
I do understand if people are against this moment for raising false stakes
mhm
Like he’s saying if you keep digging this CAN happen and that will be the last form you take IF it does happen NOT saying it necessarily WILL happen and this WILL be the last form you take WHEN it does
That was probably the wood if none was saved
LOL
(spoiler warning for anyone who doesn't know who the author is)
3:04 The shapeshifter says "that six-fingered nerd hasn't been himself in 30 years", which implies he's been watching Grunkle Stan thinking it was Ford after the latter disappeared all those years ago.
Maybe it’s being saved for the teased new season that they might make after all the teasing for it post-book of bill…
It’s easily solved somehow the future changed bc of dipper remembering the sight of that monster and that made him act differently to the other timelines
i mean Pacifica changed his fate because in the book of bill it was one of the failed timelines.
What was up with the ''IF ONLY IF I HAD A..."?
There is an alternetive time line where he really dies like that so yey
He has approximate knowledge of many things
