John Prine is irreplaceable and his music brings joy to so many. Hearing him now is sweet sadness. 3 years gone and still loved as though it were yesterday. How much the world could use his perspective today.
You can tell how much he enjoys it! And he could go from big old goofy songs like that to poignant and touching ballads in the space of a couple of minutes...easily the most relatable artist ever. Miss you John! 😢
John is the all time best ! I lived in Hawaii ,and loved the Hawaiian people, warm ,friendly and loved music..I am sure they love John. My daughter 's name is Mele,as in "Mele Kalikimaka..When she was small & misbehaved,I would be exasperated and say MELE KALIKIMAKA, look at this mess." ".when she got upset with her brother she'd yell"Michael Kalikicaca !!! So John's song always makes me LOL !! Thanks you tube !!!
I've been a total John Prine fan since his debut album in 1972. I knew all the songs from his 1st ten albums. I haven't missed anyone this much since my grandfather died in '83. He co-wrote this with Fred Koller. 25? Years ago, Fred was in Dallas for a songwriters workshop with Robert Earl Keen. We got to talking and he showed me the lyrics to this song. I laughed SO hard, and we became fast friends. I played it every hour at a Hawaiian convention that I'd been tapped to dj for {had walls of vinyl, including Hawaiian songs}. Only a few folks came up to ask about it, and they enjoyed it immensely.
Such a great song. How do you do it. Love you John, miss you. I was so luck to meet you and drink a beer over at Billy Stone Crab down in Tierra Verde FLA upstairs. Thanks for the songs and the beer. God speed brother. Amen
I saw John sing this live for the first time in Honolulu. He had sung it for the first time ever in Hawaii the previous night in Maui. He introduced the song as only he could and the audience loved it. John had a way with words that is almost nonexistent in music today.
Heard him in an interview on Aussie radio. Seemed such a nice down to earth guy. Told some funny stories including when he was drafted, but sent to Germany and not Vietnam. RIP.
I am 100% certain I met John in The Courtyard Cafe in Antioch, TN in the summer of 1995. This place has a guy playing guitar and singing like a thousand other places. I was at the bar and noticed a singer who sounded different(much better) from the regular singer. I looked and it was a guy singing this very song here. I had never heard that song before and didn’t know who John Prine was. After that song, he came to the bar close to where I was sitting. I told him I liked the song and asked where it came from. He told me that he had written it. He didn’t tell me his name but he looked just like this video except his hair was shorter. He had on a white tennis outfit
Getting into his mind by expertly knocking down his psychological walls and making him tingle with feelings of pleasure, means you're going it right. There are many "canned phrases" to make it happen, but maybe something like Celestine Dessike's Words of Desire can hit the nail on the head.
I asked this Hawian woman what Eukamakawawaheeny meant but she didn't hear me say it was a line in a John Prine song and she started screaming at me. Big ugly Hawian woman got mad and mean.👀🙆✌🏃... John woulda got a kick outa that I bet🙏❤😎
My wife and I saw JP in New York recently. Good show until he called the President of the United States an as#$@*e! Was shocked at this low class comment. Sent him a respectful email explaining that, but he wasn’t man enough to respond. DEPLORABLES and people of opposing political opinions ARE NOT WELCOME AT JOHN PRINE CONCERTS!
You want to know a place where deplorables will be shot on sight? Try any of the Trump resorts owned by the Great Deceiver. One of the things I love about Prine is his quick wit which is powered by a better-than-average brain.
For heaven's sake what would you expect from John Prine (or may other liberal artists) in times like these? It's frequently the unofficial job of artists to point out things like that. And the President of the U.S. is an incredible asshole, like nothing seen before.
Steve C. Huh. You speak of writing a statement in which you speak your opposing opinion and stated he was "not man enough" to reply. While under your exact same statement you do the exact same thing. Typical tRump worshipper. Sad really.
Party politics aside (I don't give a shit about Dems or Republicans), Trump could not be more of a spare wheel in the criss. Totally superfluous and uninspiring, when times are bad. He is used to claiming insolvency, writing off his debts and moving on. He can't that here. About half of his administration actually have relevant skills and are attempting to do something useful (whether you agree with their theory or not), the rest are blowhards who are only useful in an election When it get to his section of the press conference and he just waffles nonsense and has nothing substance to add. It is usually the ones that know they are talking about, that don't last in his administration. If he spent less time nursing his wounded ego, calling journalists asking relevant questions "Bad Journalists" rather then answering their questions, or telling hospitals to stop wining when it was his administration that was most caught off guard, and instead actually did something to bring people together during his crisis that would be better. He is hardly Churchillian, let's be honest. He is far too self absorbed, even if had one iota of the brain cells. I think people really need to learn see the grass for the trees this is not about Dems to Republicans, it is about being fool by the same old tricks. At what level of stupidity that comes out of Trump's mouth will you finally admit to yourself "ok maybe I got this guy wrong"? If he was on the Apprentice he would get fired.
This song is racist and a complete disrespect to native Hawaiians like myself. Fake language making Hawaiians sound like idiots and of a lesser status. Then accepting applause and money? For shame Mr. Prine.
A friend of mine was a back country ranger in Hawaii and told me the Native Islnders hated us mainlanders but you took the tourist money with a fake smile. What's the difference? Duke Paoa Kahinu Mokoe Hulikohola Kahanamoku and Bruddah Iz popularized Hawaii so do you blame them? Kamehameha the Great conquered other islands didn't he? I understand there were terrible things done in the past but all land is fought for land and has been since the beginning of time. Would you rather have had Japan in the 1900s or China now to gripe about? Obama could build his presidential library in Hawaii and really screw you folks. I sincerely wish all the Hawaiian people true liberty and freedom Rocky IV.
What a privilege to live on the planet during the life of John Prine.
I agree completely. This was the first song I ever heard of his back in the mid 70's
What a master word Smith
I had the opportunity it was awesome
Amen to that statement!
Glad i found him in the 70’s..

John Prine is irreplaceable and his music brings joy to so many. Hearing him now is sweet sadness. 3 years gone and still loved as though it were yesterday. How much the world could use his perspective today.
I agree and he is missed so much
RUclips is so much better with John Prine on it.
So was the world.
Too bloody right… the world is missing the years.

I've been listening to JP since '78. He never fails to make me smile. 😁
So sad he's gone, learned a lot from this great story teller. Thank you John Prine!
It's a racist ignorant song.

His passing left a whole in my soul (he would write a song around that one line🥰)
RIP John Prine
Yes this is my favorite song of his ever since I heard it when I was just a kid🙏✌♥️
Just can’t stop smiling!😺
Who doesn’t love John Prine? I dare you!
LOve his music,,his politics,,not so much
As a native Hawaiian I see pure racism and ignorance in this silly song.
Rest In Peace, John.
John Hiatt seems to be enjoying it, too, even strumming along.
Oh yeah John Hiatt,,,,
Such a great song. How do you do it. Love you John, miss you. I was so luck to meet you and drink a beer over at Billy Stone Crab down in Tierra Verde FLA upstairs. Thanks for the songs and the beer. God speed brother. Amen
We lost laughter with John
He will be remembered.
His grin says it all...😍
R.I.P John.💔💞
No RIP necessary - JOHN PRINE LIVES ON. HERE AND NOW & ALWAYS💕💕💕‼️🤷🏼♀️🎶
Racist ignorant song ever!!
I saw John sing this live for the first time in Honolulu. He had sung it for the first time ever in Hawaii the previous night in Maui. He introduced the song as only he could and the audience loved it. John had a way with words that is almost nonexistent in music today.
That had to be awesome. Always wondered how it would be received locally in Hawaii.
Heard him in an interview on Aussie radio. Seemed such a nice down to earth guy. Told some funny stories including when he was drafted, but sent to Germany and not Vietnam. RIP.
Now that was funny as hell. Gotta listen to this one a few times . It gets better everytime lol 🍍😅🥥
Saw you with Casey/Dolly on SNL tonight, John your picking is unmistakable
Look at Hiatt smile. Makes me feel good, too
John Prine was soup to nuts. Just the greatest.

SOO long since I heard this gem...thanks, RUclips and Reelin' in the Years!
He made a big difference, RIP, Sir.
i love you john prine
RIP John
RIP. Wisconsin Pride! Salute!
Love and miss you JP
Hiatt alongside Prine…wow…two amazing Johns!
You can feel the joy in that moment.
The joy of a racist song? How ignorant.
Johnny's still with us :-)
Yes it is. Quite the lineup!
Paul Gaugin's sentiments exactly
RIP John.

John Hiatt and Guy Clark are cracking up!
Awesome
I like Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell. I love John Prine.
Brilliant
thx!!
love it
❤️💔
Is that Guy Clark on the end?
@britmccabe That's what I think.
😄👏🏼
Fiery flying dragon
😂✨😄🤣😁
Aami
Question? What gives you the right to license John Prine's songs? I believe Fiona has the rights to his record label.
Who cares this song is an ignorant racist song anyway!!
RIP. Sadly, democraps and republicants know little of peace.
That song is an ignorant racist song that Hawaiian lady has every right to tell you off the lack of respect!!
I am native Hawaiian.
You can't even spell the name Hawaiian correctly shows your mentality!!

I’m sorry to hear that since my heart goes out to John & his family and I’m a deplorable.
