    Lyrics:
    Sam Stone came home,
    To the wife and family
After serving in the conflict overseas.
And the time that he served,
    Had shattered all his nerves,
And left a little shrapnel in his knees.
But the morhpine eased the pain,
And the grass grew round his brain,
And gave him all the confidence he lacked,
With a purple heart and a monkey on his back.
There's a hole in daddy's arm where all the money goes,
Jesus Christ died for nothin I suppose.
    Little pitchers have big ears,
Don't stop to count the years,
Sweet songs never last too long on broken radios.
    Sam Stone's welcome home
    Didn't last too long.
He went to work when he'd spent his last dime
And soon he took to stealing
When he got that empty feeling
For a hundred dollar habit without overtime.
And the gold roared through his veins
    Like a thousand railroad trains,
And eased his mind in the hours that he chose,
While the kids ran around wearin' other peoples' clothes...
There's a hole in daddy's arm where all the money goes,
Jesus Christ died for nothin I suppose.
    Little pitchers have big ears,
Don't stop to count the years,
Sweet songs never last too long on broken radios.
    Sam Stone was alone
When he popped his last balloon,
Climbing walls while sitting in a chair.
Well, he played his last request,
While the room smelled just like death,
With an overdose hovering in the air.
But life had lost it's fun,
There was nothing to be done,
But trade his house that he bought on the GI bill,
    For a flag-draped casket on a local hero's hill.
There's a hole in daddy's arm where all the money goes,
Jesus Christ died for nothin I suppose.
    Little pitchers have big ears,
Don't stop to count the years,
Sweet songs never last too long on broken radios.

"There's a hole in Daddy's arm, where all the money goes", probably the most powerful, heartbreaking line in a song I've ever heard, especially after he tells you how "the kids run around wearing other people clothes". God how I miss this truth teller of a man.

Alex Marshall So much appreciation to you for your service, and congratulations for "almost 4 years clean".... That is truly a major victory, especially having the physical issues, too. You deserve to be very proud of yourself, and I so hope you are! One step at a time will become a week, a month, another year. !! "Sam Stone" is hard for so many of us to hear. My son's godfather--a war correspondent in Vietnam--told me recently that he's teaching himself to play it on his guitar. I'm 81 now, in North Carolina, and "Hello in There" is poignant.. But, to me, JP's music & lyrics make every song a unique treasure.

@@denniswise1200 You are wrong! Draft cards were still issued to us in 1974. No one was actually drafted into the U.S. Army that year but it certainly was possible. I feared tricky Dick Nixon would reinstate the draft and re-ignite the war. So I worked hard to be re-classified by my local draft board from 1A status to 4G, "Surviving son of a deceased veteran ineligible for service during peacetime", since all our international conflicts are "conflicts", not "wars" officially declared by Congress. I hoped my new status would keep me from dying via Nixon's fiat. And, my draft number was 41 or 43: too high not to worry. Somewhere I still have my damned draft cards - all three of them: 1H, 1A, and 4G.

I first heard John Prine on a PBS special in December of 1982. I went to the record store the next day and bought Prime Prine. I brought it home, put it on the turntable, plugged in my earphones, sat in a chair and closed my eyes. When Sam Stone came on, I began to cry. I was 19. And I wept like I'd never wept before.
I'm listening to this song on the night John died. I'm staying up all night listening to his music. I'm drinking beer and I thought I'd be crying into it. But I'm not. I am heartened by a quote of John's I saw on Twitter tonight. He says: "I guess I just process death differently than some folks. Realizing you’re not going to see that person again is always the most difficult part about it. But that feeling settles, and then you are glad you had that person in your life."
No, I'm not crying tonight. I am grateful. I'm glad John hung around long enough to share his music with a whole new generation. And I'm happy he no longer has to suffer.

I was totally blown away by his music & am still blown away to this day. Words aren't enough to describe the brilliance, power, & beauty of his songs. Simple, pure, & honest. He had a knack of writing about his experiences and life that was so very simple, so very relatable, that you understood the lyrics without having to decode them. They say that a picture paints a thousand words. Well, "There's a hole in daddy's arm where all the money goes" are 11 words that paint a picture that speaks volumes.

I still like picking up the guitar and playing these tunes. He is a hero of songwriting and simple guitar patterns to hold them together. It was all about the story, keeping it real. I was lucky to meet John in a bar in San Jose, CA, Doc Watson was playing that evening. John sat down next to me at the bar. I looked at him for a moment and said, Hey, aren't you John Prine? He just said Yup, and went up on stage to play with Doc. We shared a beer later.

I am lucky enough to have adored John Prine for a long time. Sam Stone is one of the saddest and truest songs ever. But a lot of his other songs contain humor and pathos, he was an artist.

I am a very sad boyo this Morning as I have learned the very Sad news that John Prine a singer songwriter I have been a fan of since we both were young Dudes is another victim of this nasty public enemy number one Virus and is Critical ill, I pray that John who has overcome Serious illness before can see this away also* John's songs like Sam Stone deal with real life & though very sad at times show in my opinion his Caring for his fellow humans in a big way !
God bless you John & People listen to those that know & take heed & we will conquer this enemy before it takes our own family and friends*

I was privileged enough to see John Prince play before an Arlo Guthrie concert at Robinson Center Auditorium in Little Rock about 30 years ago.
I've got a good friend right now that is MY Sam Stone. It's pain killers and beer trying to fix back pain due to the invasion of Iraq. When you see videos of the first Marines entering Baghdad, that was him. Marine Scouts!!! He's got good friends around him though and he just had back surgery, so fingers crossed and prayers going up🙏🙏🙏

Unfortunately I lived this song word to word note to note, when I finally decided to give up smack and get on a methadone program in some of my groups I'd play this song, cause it told my story as well as I could, I hope it helped someone to not get themselves to the situation ole Sam found hisself in at the end of this song...!!!

Saw a John Prine performance once. He was hung over - still his voice was all flowers. Easy on the ears.
Art and liquor. Seem to go hand in hand. I am a witness.
BTW, Jesus didn't die for nothin'. I Know. He keeps me driving. He sees me me through.
Tomorrow is always another day. (One of God's great designs.)

My wife died Dec 12th 23 in our bedroom in my arms. My girl introduced me to John Prine and since I lost my love I fine myself seeking out his and Merle Hagard songs as her and I both played and sang many evenings under the veranda with smiles on our mouths and love for each other in our hearts and souls....God knows I miss her with everything I am.
