As an 81 year old in a six days time, I have never been disappointed in any of John's songs or performances, it was a very sad day when he passed away, the world lost an unbelievable and to some degree an underrated talent, just think of all of the music fans who had never experienced his genius, and to those of us who did - from a long time ago. thank you John - your music and memory will live on with us forever.
1971- I was at The Old Town School of Folk Music a guest of Winn Stracke the founder. He had performed ALL of John's first album for us, well almost all. And we where huge fans on the spot. The club across the street rumor had it was where Kris Kristofferson heard John. I met John and Steve at a waaaaay out in the hills concert in Maine in 1975. My girl and I were stagehands and backstage. She was picked to present Steve with birthday flowers. I made veggie stew for the band. Days and nights like that just can't be brought back. Much like Mr. Peabody's coal. I hear John's little brother is out performing the songs!
Pretty sure the young man playing lead guitar is the youngster from Bloomington, Indiana. Had him in a high school class I was a substitute teacher for. Lot of music in Bloomington, Even beyond Molenkamp, a new young lady Sadie Johnson ex Sad Sam Blues Band. Keep an eye on her. And her sister on bass and Krista Hess on Guitar as well.
David Allan Coe made a lot of money for himself & Steve Goodman by recording this song. It reached number eight on the charts in 1975. Even though John Prine helped Steve write it, Prine requested to be uncredited on the song because he thought it was a goofy novelty song. Years later, Steve gave John, John’s part of the royalties out of good faith to his friend.
John was a great guy and my sisters boyfriend. We lived in Maywood IL. John went to school with all of my 5 brothers and 3 sisters. He worked at the local post office. and he’d come and eat at our house like family!!! We miss you Brother ❤️🍷
John Prine's talent as a story teller, singer, composer and musician deserve more recognition than they ever received. I'm 72 and am glad to have shared time with John.
What the hell you talking about? Why is it not good enough to suit you that he had a huge following and had everything he wanted? What no AM radio playing his hit single all week over and over? Is that the recognition you think is good or did he let you down by not writing real popular lame ass songs of the insipid MTV or VH1 kind. Man, he was a songwriter's songwriter and it takes good taste and quick wit to appreciate John Prine not mention actually listen to his lyrics. He was as close to perfect as can be and those big rock stars attract the brain dead. You don't get it do you.
My 80th bday is 3 weeks away which is a great shock to me.😮😅 I love John Prine like a brother. best thing my crazy ex husband ever did was take me to a concert in Arlington Tx in May 1973. First time l ever saw John and he's part of my life since. RIP and rise in glory brother.

Welp it’s Christmas Day 2024 I’m sitting by myself in my Freightliner in Columbus Ohio Missing my Wife and kids and my dog But John just made it a little bit better🎉 MERRY CHRISTMAS JOHN PRINE AND STEVE GOODMAN
I've been a John Prine fan for 48 years and never tired of him. I remember way back in the '70s, '80s, '90s, etc., every time he came out with a new album I would be afraid that he had changed, and lost his magic touch. It never happened. For the rest of his life, every album he came out with was just as good, or better, than the last. As many of his fans say, he wrote the music that was the sound track of our lives, and that's absolutely the case with me. I never met him, but always wished I had. I did stand a few feet from him as he performed in Sacramento in the 1980s, and never flinched as I snapped photos from the front of the stage. Literally every story I've heard from those who did meet him are basically the same - he was kind, generous with his time, would sometimes sit down and share a meal with a random fan, and would never make anyone feel bad for saying hello or asking for a photo with him. I miss him so much.
I think he made this up as he went along. Seems I heard the stor Steve was going to give the song to Coe to do and wanted to know if John wanted credit. John thought the sng was stupid, which is why David Alan Coe never gave him credit for it. I have a double album with the story book the various songs on album. John said he would write songs in his mind on the way to the club show he did, because he was afraid the people were tired of his others.
Last night I saw an accident, on the corner of Third and Green. Two cars collided, and I got excited, just being a part of that scene. God Bless John Prine.
@@davenc8527 Yes, he was only challenged as the greatest lyricist by Shel Silverstein, who wrote the lyrics for the ORIGINAL Ned Kelly, 1970, and lots of them for Dr. Hook.
I’ve been a huge fan for 50+ years. I love his music so much. The night my husband proposed to me, we had been to see John Prine in concert with Leon Redbone opening. It was awesome. Hard to believe that was almost 40 years ago. I cried so much when he died. RIP, John!
Was that show in Milwaukee? I saw those two. Leon walks on stage tossing down his cane with a spin, it bounces off the stage with opposite spin and he catches it. Simple little move but I remember it to this day. Must have been around 1977.
This year on Christmas night, after everything had settled down and the kids we in bed, "How Lucky" came on as I stood there with my wife feeling so grateful for all that God has blessed me with. Brought me to tears. John was so amazing. We need more people like him on this earth.
A moment of serendipity. My favorite moments in life and I know they come from the Great Beyond. 😊 I loved your post. I got the flu a week b4 Christmas and a lung cancer survivor with a lobe removed it hit me so hard I missed our gathering with my 3 girls and 4 grands. I was so sad but they appeared with a huge plate of food and sang Do You Hear What I Hear to me. My favorite hymn at Christmas. It's about love and food and gratitude. Thanks for your words. Happy New Year to you and your family. I couldn't make it without mine...they always come thru. ❤
John was the most gracious man I ever knew, he smiled all the time. God bless John Prine and forgive me for being so silly I should have known you were legendary material.
John Prine was a blessing to true music lovers. When we lost him we lost a bit of Americana. He was the epitome of a real American singer/songwriter. God bless you, John.
What a treat to stumble on to this song after many years and to hear the story behind it. I used to see John and Steve play in Illinois from time to time back in the '70s. Lucky me. Talented them.

Steve Goodman--what TERRIBLE LOSS.Even when he was ill, he toured and would stop at hospitals to get treatments...... the disease finally claimed him--but the world gained beautiful songs, and enjoyed Steve's dear sweet spirit. His light burns still, in the hearts of those he touched.... xoooox
Every morning John greets me wrapping me in his arms of compassion, empathy, unconditional intelligence understanding my humor, sadness and history....and I, am one with him. I love you John, and love knowing you and your beautiful wife joined talents and raised amazing kids. May the energies of The Universe continue to flow through your parents and the river in which you dance, into a person like me who plugs you and your music into my ears, "running" as a 75 year old spunky woman...."In Spite Of Ourselves"! What a beautiful sentiment 75 year old grandma! Couldn't have said it better myself. My last special someone and I used to dance to that song nearly every night. She would sing her part and we would both sing ours. Sometimes with a little less clothing on then you would like to see two and their late sixties. Rip John. My wife and I had a connection through John and so did my special girl after I was divorced.
Holey Moley!! Is this the pinnacle? Very Steve Goodman like song. I saw them live in 1977 in Toronto, Convocation Hall, my first date with a wonderful young woman who I married in 1979!! RIP SG and JP, may God , as we know him, bless you both. We are still married, thank you John.
No. No they’re not . They are just dead and you have a problem with reality. We do however have a ton of records that we can enjoy until we too return to dust. Forever!
I'm 75 yrs old , i have been a fan of country music all my life , since a long departed cousin came back from living in Canada , and brought me back two j Cash albums . I had never heard of John Prine 'til discovering him last week on 'You Tube' !!! - WOW ! - when did he die ?
I heard this song when it originally came out. At the time I was probably 10 or 12 years old. I didn’t understand it. Now I am pushing 50 and I have enough life experience and heartache to understand. Crushing weight of the destroyed lives collapsing on you, and still feeling hope. I know what it feels like to try to stop believing and hope.
Alive in our digital hands..im only 77 in a fre days seems like a Lifetime!! Watched John go from a young man to a shrivelled little old man right in front of our eyes & Mick Jagger go on forever!!
@@alasdairwreid heh my best friend lives in Glasgow, your comment simply caught my eye here while thinking of friends and poets and it got me thinking "…from north of Scotland!" you are either drunk, from Icland, or Nessy the sea monster… probably all three I chuckled to myself silently wondering what John Prine would've made of that, but I guess in a way he already did because people of such unque legacy live on in the hearts and memories of those they touched somehow whether they know it or not, passed on or still here. They do remain with us I think. Bless ya with love from Philly to Scotland.
I had the pleasure of working on a concert with both John & Steve Goodman together in Portland, Or in the 70’s. One of the greatest times in my musical career!
To me, he speaks of Texas. To others he speaks of other lives I suppose. I suppose in a weird, different way that is why Shakespeare is still popular 😊. Both of them understood the human being and the conversations, stories and emotions that was and is life. I found him too late when he passed away. The man was a born for the working class, musical genius.
Growing up listening to this great man so many years gives up older folks that special connection listening to him in our older years! 70s now and so happy listening to Prines music !
So gutted for John that he’s gone and selfishly gutted for myself for only getting into him recently…..can’t believe I hadn’t heard about him until a year or so ago. Love everything I’ve heard by him so far, can’t get enough!
@@marlaweatherson6524 This is true. Still, I could kick myself for missing out on his songs for so long. As you say though, at least I have in the end.
I was lucky enough to have seen him live three times. One at the very beginning of his career, once in his prime and once at the end. My late husband, who was really into music and had seen just about everyone somehow missed John Prine until he met me in his 40s. He couldn't believe he had missed him either. Your flag decal won't get you into heaven but listening to John Prine will get you close!
I got to see John Prine on three different occasions… lastly at Radio City Music Hall… on his last tour. Losing him… hit very hard… an American icon… a great story teller… and from what I’ve heard from other musicians… a good human being. I miss John Prine… and know that I always will… I’m going to see his brother Billy Prine… in October… looking forward to it… maybe a bit of closure… or maybe just miss him a little bit more… Thank You John… for all your music 🎶…❤️… give my regards to Steve… 💐💐
As an old person I do hope his savior called him home, if that was what he believed and wanted. It's not mine, but I hope he received what he expected. I will miss him and his talent and his poetry that he put into music. Condolences to his family who must really, really miss him.
I’m blessed to have his album, I’m 72 & love his music, Angel from Montgomery one of my favorites. RIP John, have shared you w/ my daughter & still listening to your lyrics & loving your music♥️💫🕊
I have loved his music since the 70's and still do!! I played his song "In spite of ourselves" at my husband's celebration of life because it described us completely and we made it our song? Miss them both....
I simply love John's STORIES he was one of the BEST.TWO VERY TALENTED MEN.SADLY MISSED.HEAVEN IS IN GOOD HANDS WITH THEM BOTH RIP YOU TWO I CANT IMAGINE WHAT YOU TWO ARE UP TOO😢😢😍😍😍❤❤❤❤
Like someone else said below, I was late to the John Prine appreciation party. My mistake! Wish I could have magically spent an evening listening to him sing and tell stories in a living room somewhere.
I have never seen an artist so loved and recognized as i did when i saw john and jason and band in Indianapolis. John just spoke out loud on the microphone to people he knew and recognized out in the crowd telling them he will see them after the show. That night was one one the best concerts of my life. Now the first time i saw him was in evansville indiana at the mesker park amphitheater bluegrass concert. Earl Scruggs and sons were on the stage and i kept seeing this roady down front feverishly smoking ciggs and chuggin jack daniels whiskey. I thought who in the hell is that rough cutt lookin grubby roadie down front. Then they announced mr. John prine and he walked on stage ,he alone with his martin d 28,set that bottle of jack down and went to work. I had never seen anything like it . The stories, the songs and funny lyrics. Man he was a true master at work holding us all spell bound. Liveing in the moment contemplating humor ,sadness,a lost love, and twisted marital relationship, and murder on a fishing trip. Never will forget it.
I am 77 and even though I had a good singing voice I did not pay much attention to music until about 10 years ago when I discovered karaoke on you tube and started to use that to learn different songs. I go to karaoke venues now at least once a week and for an old fart, I am ok. I had never heard of most of the musicians that I sing to until something happens to them. I just started to learn about John Prine about a month ago and he has been added to my list. My wife and I sing "in spite of ourselves" and I do "the other side of town"
I am glad he did this one for Steve but there is no comparison. Steve's version never got old. I always laughed or smiled. 😢 He is missed. Also he was a far superior guitar player. I do like JP for his songs, don't misunderstand me but Steve was my favorite.
I first found John Prine in 1976. I fell in love with his music . Ehen ever i feel down i put his music on. I only saw in concert bonce in 1978 oon Birmingham Al. It was one of best concerts i had ever been to. It seemed like he was singing just for me. RIP. My friend 😢 ..
What a great song. I’m sad when I discover a musician for real near or at their end. I’d heard his name, but thought he wasn’t for me. Wrong. Great performance, enjoyed the tune.
Saw him when he played at the Orpheum in Memphis TN. One of the best concerts I’ve ever seen! I’ve actually reached the age where I really appreciate his song “Hello in There” even more than ever!
Loved seeing him live, to be up close was worth what it took to get those seats. Such a nice guy, played to the crowd, and loved us all. He had a die hard crowd, and even the newer audience at the shows, the kids, they got him, too. ❤️
@@davidholton9667 68. I think the first time I saw him was '80 either at the Warner or Baltimore's historic Lyric. He was a crowd pleaser. The last time I saw him was at Wolf Trap one summer some years after his throat cancer recovery. He'd play what we asked for. I think it was him who said on stage to tell the truth when we could. Humble, honest, and intelligent was John.
Back in the 80s Arlo opened for him, and then in later years they got together some more. I'm pretty sure that was the case in DC in the early 2000s. The last time I saw him was in Vienna maybe 2008. Whoops I lied just then. Phoenix at the MIM was great show. Fairly recent, in the 8 years but I get out a lot. Loved his somewhat reverse unconventional picking method. Hard to pull off. Fave song Unwed Fathers or Burned Orange I guess.
Smiling Johnnie 😢. Love this song. I’m so privileged to have discovered him in 1972 and listen to him & miss him everyday! Love and miss Steve Goodman too❤️. This is a wonderful tribute and story to John and Steve🤣
I didnt get into listening to country music until the 1990s so I missed a lot of great singers. Garth Brooks and Alan Jackson got me into loving country. I had never heard of John Prine until today. I love his voice and this song. ❤
I did a lot of drinking to David Allen Coe's version , which has a slightly different ending. " I was drunk the day my momma got out of prison. And I went to pick her up in the rain. But before I could get to the station in my pick-up truck,She got runned over by the damn old train ". This song is a surefire way to get the crowd singing!

She would sing her part and we would both sing ours. Sometimes with a little less clothing on then you would like to see two and their late sixties. Rip John. My wife and I had a connection through John and so did my special girl after I was divorced.
Aaahh...finally out of the wilderness a song playing my tune...gladness of spirit!
RIP John and Steve. I know you are both making beautiful music in Heaven
Thank you FOAD.
No. No they’re not . They are just dead and you have a problem with reality. We do however have a ton of records that we can enjoy until we too return to dust. Forever!
... and John is smoking a cigarette that's "nine miles long". :-)

Why rain on people's kind and hopeful comments with ignorance as your bliss ?
What an Icon of American folk music. He is missed
I'm 75 yrs old , i have been a fan of country music all my life , since a long departed cousin came back from living in Canada , and brought me back two j Cash albums .
I had never heard of John Prine 'til discovering him last week on 'You Tube' !!! - WOW ! - when did he die ?
April 7, 2020
Well, you're a lucky duck getting to discover him! Enjoy. He's one of one.
That there is my music hero.
I'm a 60 year old blues harmonica player, also a retired dj, played johns music many times loved big ole goffy world
The late great Jerry Jeff does a pretty nice cover of this song also
Oh cool I will check it out
Alive in our digital hands..im only 77 in a fre days seems like a Lifetime!! Watched John go from a young man to a shrivelled little old man right in front of our eyes & Mick Jagger go on forever!!
ditto . . . . from the north of Scotland . . . .!!!
Bless ya with love from Philly to Scotland.
my main regret is never having had the opportunity to see John live . . . .
A song about trains and electricity would be nice ,great song ,great John
Hello how are you doing?
Man, it's good to have a place to come when the politics and the other b.s. gets to be too much.
This song never gets old.
❤🎉😊❤
Best story teller, singer songwriter ever!!🤣👍🥰
I had the pleasure of working on a concert with both John & Steve Goodman together in Portland, Or in the 70’s.
One of the greatest times in my musical career!
To me, he speaks of Texas. To others he speaks of other lives I suppose. I suppose in a weird, different way that is why Shakespeare is still popular 😊. Both of them understood the human being and the conversations, stories and emotions that was and is life. I found him too late when he passed away. The man was a born for the working class, musical genius.
Hello friend, how are you doing today
Growing up listening to this great man so many years gives up older folks that special connection listening to him in our older years! 70s now and so happy listening to Prines music !
So gutted for John that he’s gone and selfishly gutted for myself for only getting into him recently…..can’t believe I hadn’t heard about him until a year or so ago. Love everything I’ve heard by him so far, can’t get enough!
At least you got him eventually.
I just did covered him myself this past year. Don't know why I hadn't heard of him and his music until recently. I love him.
Doesn't matter when. Just so you did. Hope you know Souvenirs
I miss John. Just knowing I'll not be seeing anything new. He was a blessing on this world.
Steve Goodman too.
My wife is from Serbia. She loves this
Hi James, how are you doing today
@@Marybrunette excellent. Thank you
@@Marybrunette excellent! And you?
I got to see John Prine on three different occasions… lastly at Radio City Music Hall… on his last tour. Losing him… hit very hard… an American icon… a great story teller… and from what I’ve heard from other musicians… a good human being. I miss John Prine… and know that I always will… I’m going to see his brother Billy Prine… in October… looking forward to it… maybe a bit of closure… or maybe just miss him a little bit more… Thank You John… for all your music 🎶…❤️… give my regards to Steve… 💐💐
😅
As an old person I do hope his savior called him home, if that was what he believed and wanted. It's not mine, but I hope he received what he expected. I will miss him and his talent and his poetry that he put into music. Condolences to his family who must really, really miss him.
Rest in peace John … you were doing the lord’s work
Hello friend, how are you doing today
I saw him in Austin. I love him.
In around early 1976 Ish he played a show in Newport with Steve Goodman !
Missing you John!
I know how much you loved Christmas,I am praying there is a big goofy party up yonder.
John was the troubador of our generation, just as Woody Guthrie was of my parents generation. John is missed immensely.

A gorgeous classic song !!

Missing John Prine 😢
A favorite song of mine.
Also, thanks to David Allen Coe. ❤️🎶. RIP John Prine ❤️
Like someone else said below, I was late to the John Prine appreciation party. My mistake! Wish I could have magically spent an evening listening to him sing and tell stories in a living room somewhere.
There are things in life that bring a smile when you need it most. Thank you John!
@1_richdog346 .That's exactly why I'm listening right now. Just listening again brilliant. Thanks John. 🙏❤️🤗✨️✨️✨️
Yes indeed!! Well done
Thank You Michael. Glad to have you here

I came here day 3 of the 4 year hell, and listened to this and cried.
Outstanding. Such a great writer
How are you? So sorry for the infringe on your privacy. Beautiful song
Such a beautiful man singing and smiling about another super beautiful man.. w such a fun song that they wrote together.. ♥️💚💙
Such a wonderful song and story
I am glad he did this one for Steve but there is no comparison. Steve's version never got old. I always laughed or smiled. 😢 He is missed.
Also he was a far superior guitar player. I do like JP for his songs, don't misunderstand me but Steve was my favorite.
I first found John Prine in 1976. I fell in love with his music . Ehen ever i feel down i put his music on. I only saw in concert bonce in 1978 oon Birmingham Al. It was one of best concerts i had ever been to. It seemed like he was singing just for me. RIP. My friend 😢
..
Oh man, this is so great, it’s always great when it’s John Prine, happy tears I tell myself
We'll miss you forever John.
Such adorable good-timey tongue in cheek. Love it!
What a great song. I’m sad when I discover a musician for real near or at their end. I’d heard his name, but thought he wasn’t for me. Wrong. Great performance, enjoyed the tune.
Hello how are you doing?
Lucky enough to meet him, @ a Poody party
God bless Poody Lock.
Excellent, all the way around the band.
We were Blessed to hear and appreciate John Prine . . . Thanks Mr Prine . ! .

How are you? So sorry for the infringe on your privacy. Beautiful song

Happy to post it Jackie. This is one of my favorite version of this song. Hilarious how John put David Allen Coe and mama in jail.

I didnt get into listening to country music until the 1990s so I missed a lot of great singers. Garth Brooks and Alan Jackson got me into loving country. I had never heard of John Prine until today. I love his voice and this song. ❤
So glad you've discovered this marvellous man. Enjoy! ❤
Beautiful. Thank you for sharing.
@honestj820 very well, thanks.
What a great tune, Thanks for this video.
This was a very popular and memorable song. Its good to here it again.

Laughing all the way HOME 😘😘😘
As always, great music from John Prine. He was great at reflecting on life in his music.
