Harris, Parton, Ronstadt on Late Show, March 24, 1999 (full, stereo)

- "Trio II" was recorded in 1994 but not released until 1999, when Emmylou Harris, Dolly Parton, and Linda Ronstadt appeared on Late Show to perform Neil Young's "After the Gold Rush." The Glass Harmonica (or Armonica) was played by Dennis James, who remembers the performance in an interview with Rich Bailey in 2002:
Rich Bailey: I remember when you appeared with her on Letterman and you discussed the Armonica a bit. How was that?
Dennis James: Well, it was a great surprise. A sort of unspoken message in the air to me before the broadcast was "Do not say anything on the air!”. After all, these things are Linda's appearances. When David L. leaned over his desk and directed a question to me I simply froze- on playback of the dub I can see myself caught and unable to speak. I received a glance from Linda that said to me it was OK and so when he tried again I called back a flip one liner and on things went from there.
www.ronstadt-li...
The synthesizer player is Cliff Carter. I think the pianist is Robbie Kondor.
The Trio altered two lines in their original "Trio II" recording:
1. "in the nineteen seventies" changed to "in the twentieth century."
2. "And I felt like getting high" changed to "And I felt like I could cry."
Here's their CD version: • Trio - After The Gold ...
It'd be tough to imagine them changing the lyrics without first getting Neil's permission.
So to everyone complaining about the lyric changes in this live performance: Don't blame the show or the network. The changes had been made in the Trio's original recording. And, we must assume, with Neil Young's blessing.
Update: Quoting Wikipedia: "Parton also released a solo version of the song in 1996, though her version altered the line 'I felt like getting high' to 'I felt like I could cry' with the permission of Neil Young."
No lip-synching. No dancing. No light show. Just pure raw talent. And no egos.
No Auto-tune either.
Just perfection....
Oh, there were plenty of egos. Just not on display here.
You won't find this anymore on today's joke of what they now call evening talk shows.
Why Don you people feel the need to criticize?
Just stumbled upon this in mid 2024 and all I can say is WOW.
If these three together don't give you chills, you have no pulse.
I cried
It’s a bit of magic, isn’t it
Ou são depressivos ( risos )
We might be dead if you like this
Agreed! Surreal and otherworldly , just simply unbelievable.
And here I am, on my way out in August of 2024 and still loving it. Thank you girls. Dorothy 🇿🇦☮️🙏💜
Me, too!
me too!
I was in the 8th grade when Niel Young released After the Gold Rush. I've loved this song ever since.
I've attended two David Letterman shows in my lifetime , this was one of them. My hosts and I had no idea who the guests were that evening (until we got there); and then, this happened. I'm not a religious man, but I suspect this is the closest I'm ever going to get.
Absolute perfection.
Wow ! What a beautiful memory..
❤
oh my god.
Well...religion doesn't take anyone to a Heavenly place anyways. If you truly enjoyed the experience, it's time to get in terms with JesusChrist. The place alone and the Angels Choir will blow your mind for the whole eternity. 😉

Nice to go back in time. I miss Linda Ronstadt’s amazing voice.
I agree 💯 magical ✨️.
Reminds me of being young and my 1st husband ❤ beautiful.. God is Good
Yeah, she was really great.
8/12/24: we all miss Linda’s incredible voice. These 3 friends surely made fine music. Thank you Linda, Emmylou, and Dolly.
By 1999, when they appeared on Letterman, Linda's voice was starting to be affected by the palsy that eventually led to her retirement from public performances and ultimately prevented her from being able to sing at all. When she was at full power, NO ONE could sing like Linda.
Anyone else watching this in the twenty-first century?
April 2020
Of course will always be one of the best!
April 2020.
Too beautiful for words. May 28, 2020.
Yes, thankfully...
Listening today in July 2024 and still healed by such talented legends.... listening to Linda Ronstadt - soul extremely touched.
Linda Rondstadt was the best vocalist ever! She could sing anything from country to opera!
It's real easy to forget a major talent like Janis Joplin she sang acapella no backup and her Mercedes-Benz song dominated the number one spot in the chart for months. I don't see this person singing it without a band behind her so she's got a talent but I got to put my money on Janis Joplin having the best because she stood alone and dominated first place for a long time everybody else got some band
@@markmcgoveran6811 Barbra Streisand and Karen Carpenter are the two best ever, and didnt have bands.
@@omgDavidGlasper Janis Joplin held the Mercedes-Benz song in the number one spot for a few weeks with no music. I would call that the greatest accomplishment for a female vocalist in my life time.
Rondstadt is a goddess of a voice
Linda is great, but she lacks pure emotion. There is no greatest, just personal favs. i personally rate Judith Durham light years over any other female singer, and that includes the incomparable Dame Shirley Bassey. 😊
Willie Nelson said there are two kinds of men. The ones who love Linda Ronstadt, and the ones who haven't seen her sing.
A bit of a paraphrase, he said that about Emmylou, the second 1/2 was those who haven't met her. It's applicable though.
I had mad crush on her at 15
On pourrait dire la même chose à propos de Diana Ankoudinova et ce n'est même pas nécessaire de connaitre le propos de la chanson, souvenez vous ... DIANA ANKUDINOVA ...
God I miss her performing! ❤
.ANKLE AND I 9
I’ve watched a lot of videos of these three singing together, and almost all the comments mention the fact that Linda literally has to hold back when she sings, because her voice is so powerful. She was really one of the best ever.
No ego, just pure talent in harmony. You could sense that the trio were both happy and proud to be singing together. The result is music that's heaven on earth.
Simple class, utterly beautiful
Three class acts

Don’t forget Neil
Love each of these ladies for their talents each brings, but together it is angelic music for my soul. Love, love, love it! I am mesmerized by that glass harmonica!
No egos, you are correct.
No auto tune……Just natural perfection!❤
Hello Catherine
How are you doing today?
Listening in 2023 . It never gets old ❤
Hello Wendy
How are you doing today?
Here in 2024
2024 and still love this. Incredible
Here in Mexico City, 2024 post- pandemic. Remembering when I first heard these voices, first heard those lyrics of Neil Young…70s 80s90s… tears in my eyes for all the beauty that can just go by…
Sheer perfection.
Those Linda Ronstadt high harmonies are stunning.
She could sing anything in any genre! A once in a lifetime talent.
Check out her stuff with Philip Glass.
She has an incredible range. In some of the other clips of the three of them, she sings the low harmony. All three of them have simply amazing, iconic voices.
Linda once said that she loved singing like this as she didn't have to sing leads and could focus on harmonies. That 4 octave voice certainly soared in this. Parkinson's is a miserable disease.
Emmy singing high harmony as well
Linda is holding back her voice on this song. Just happy to harmonize beautifully. I’ve never heard a voice quite like Linda Ronstadt ever.
Bella Bella I know right?
Linda has the extra ordinary ability to weave her voice in tight harmonies that few can match. She's there, you can distinctly hear her, but she's not dominating the melody. All three of their voices are tremendous instruments on their own.
It’s so tragic that she lost her voice to Progressive Supranuclear Palsy.
Bella Bella- as to Linda’s voice, I don’t believe anyone else has heard any quite like her either. Listening years earlier to Andrew Gold & Kenny Edwards backing her up is as good as vocal arrangements can get, imo. She’s a treasure no doubt...plus she’s always had “It”
Yes, all three so humbly blended with the others. So beautiful.
best trio of all time !! it's a crying shame that Linda Ronstadt can no longer amaze us with her incredible voice. love you always little bare foot girl !!
For me, it's Alison Krauss, Emmylou Harris, and Gillian Welch, Linda was a stunning vocalist. Check out go to sleep you little baby, sung acapella.
Wonderfully! But check out Emmulou Harris, Mary Black and Dolores Keene singing Sonny
24 years later, I'm wondering how I missed this! We see Dolly and Linda occasionally through the years, all three emitting true beauty, but not having seen Emmylou Harris since the 80s, she has entered her senior years as an incredibly beautiful woman. I had not idea she was still performing! I love how humble they are, not overpowering or upstaging, a wonderful blending of three iconic voices. Wow.
Checkout Emmylou and Mark Knopfler recordings if you haven't already. Great stuff.
This is the purest form of what our old folks called genuine music! Zero autotunes, just rehearsing until your heart breaks, and when you sing, remember to transmit the feelings and emotions of the simple but incredibly genius compositions. And back then the awards for sales, etcétera were irrelevant! Not today! Sad!
No gimmicks, no USP’s, just three beautiful women with unique and wonderful voices.
I'm so glad these women got together. Their music is amazing.
This is talent! No overdone loud noise. Just beautiful pure harmony. Gosh this is good!
LOVELY. THANK YOU. At 57, one of the few joys of my life has been Linda Ronstadt...for over 40 years, as both of grew older. Thanks, again.
Sounds good to me.
I first heard 'After the Gold Rush' as I sat down in the chapel for my best friend's memorial service in October of 1971. Four days earlier we were climbing a 400 foot waterfall when the unthinkable happened. As I took my seat in the chapel I heard the line, "I was thinking about what a friend had said, I was hoping it was a lie." It later occurred to me that every person in the room had lived that line at some point that week. In the song, there is no explanation of what 'a friend had said'. Neil left that to our imagination, which is what makes it so provocative. My friend loved Neil's music and used to especially enjoy singing 'Sugar Mountain' for us. It was 2 months before his 20th birthday when he died, cause you 'can't be twenty on Sugar Mountain'. It almost goes without saying that no other song holds a place in my heart quite like this one.
Lovely.
I remember seeing this live. I was holding a sleepless babe in my arms, rocking her. This performance brought me to tears. Husband bought the CD fo me the next day. Said daughter is all grown. Performance can still evoke tears
What a lovely memory... All happiness to you and your family
Aww my son would have been a few days before turning one and I never missed David Letterman during those years. Time goes by so face.
Beautiful cover of Neil Young song !
How beautiful. Thank you for sharing. This was glorious, heartbreaking. One of my favourite songs elevated by those goddesses. Letterman has always brought such gems as these to light.
How beautifully soothing. I just happened on this and what a treat it was. Just lovely.
Absolutely heavenly. Great harmony. Linda has always been my favoutite. Devistated when she no longer sang due to her medical issue. 😢 Great to be able to view how great she was. ❤

I love those three. Each of them a big deal on their own, but submitting to the music and just blending with each other. Sublime. ❤
‘Submitting to the music’
Watching in 2024! Love this so much!
Separate, these three voices are each amazing. Together, they are astonishing! The whole is greater than the sum of its parts!
3 legendary ladies, absolutely wonderful.
I just loved the way Dolly and Linda would side glance at each other. Wether it was the pure joy of singing or reassurance, it was beautiful.
Hello Lesley, how are you doing?
Hello Callum, how are you doing?
Not seen this before. What a delight, angelic. Thank you
Hi Pauline hope you're okay?
And era slowly passing. I doubt music will ever be the same. Glad my child listens to music I grew up with- when it was a gifted art.
The part that really hit me is the look of absolute joy and happiness on Linda's face as she looks over at the other two -- as if there is NO PLACE in the world that she would rather be than on that stage adding her voice to help create that magic!
Even the angels are crying right now...this is what heaven must sound like.
ANDDDDDD she's singing the highest of all high harmonies on this song!!!!
Just listened to an old concert from the 70's on RUclips when Linda described getting a breathless call from Emmylou to hurry and get herself over to her house; their favorite singer, Dolly Parton was there. She went on to say they sang together, sounded pretty good and hoped something would come of it. Something did!
She recently reflected that since she was a young girl, all she ever wanted was to be a singer, "how cool is that?" she asks.
Goose bumps
I keep coming back to this song, and it never fails to make me cry like a baby. It feels like the funeral dirge for the planet Earth.
I think that it is exactly that. Neil Young is a kind of prophet.
It may be
Yes💧
The funeral dirge are the bad thoughts, from the left, leading to self destruction.
What would leave no trace in 5000 years?
Perhaps an ideology that convinced the young that they are destroying the planet, causing them to walk away from civilization leaving only overgrown buildings?

If you can find it.. her album “Hand Seen, Home Grown” is awesome early Ronstadt

They harmonize like the female version of the Bee Gees, sounding like one voice at times, and at others you hear the differences in their voice on the same note at the same moment. No auto tune required or over dubbing. Just perfection.
These amazing women should preserved for all time. The ultimate in musical harmony. Neil Young never wrote the song to be sung this way but now, he must have wished he had! If only these wonderful ladies (and I) could survive another decade or two.

He leaned over to me during the concert and yelled in my ear, "Dad I know this song". Old Dad here, felt pretty good. Still do.
Hard to believe that Linda Ronstadt is 75 years old, time flies but her music lives on.

Wow. No Autotune just real talent, beauty and artistry. Thank you so much ladies.
There is not a single thing about this that isn't just....perfect.
Sean Cruse I didn't care for the change in lyrics to apparently appease the network but the singing was beautiful.
Flying Mother Nature's silver seed to a new home in the sun. Not the best choice. It's very hot. I'm from Canada, and Neal Young was great, but I always found the lyrics to this song rather silly. The girls sounded excellent, though!
@Midnight Rider Well, yeah. Everything needs more cowbell, especially cows. Goes without saying.
3 of the most talented female vocalists. What a beatific arraignment.

Yes indeed . Did not realise how luckly we were at the time .Took such quality for granted.

This song is so brilliant that I have to listen to it daily. The voices are insane, but it’s the harmony that makes this version so beautiful. Neil Young wrote this song but these three ladies have lifted it to fab heights. Dolly’s voice is superb and Linda and Emmy bring such celestial harmony to make this version an angelic version that NY would be proud of. This version is a treasure.

Most sing what they think they can. Ronstadt sang what she wanted, with who she wanted, when she wanted and how she wanted. Glorious flexible lead singer and a harmonizer extrordinaire. Linda did all the vocal arrangements often encouraging the remarkable Dolly and Emmy Lou to shine on TRIO. She also produced an entire album with that odd instrument - Glass Armónica.

Dolly singing solo, and then Linda's beautiful alto voice comes in. Oh, how l love her voice. One of the few singers I can actually listen to the whole album/CD. All three are wonderful in their own right. Even better together. Thankyou U-tube.
Ive never heard this version of Neil's song. Amazing! Absolutely beautiful
These three ladies together are the ultimate in musical mastery. The harmony makes hair stand, sends tingles down spines, gives goose bumps and fills my heart with wonder every time I hear this song. Linda’s, Emmy’s and Dolly’s harmony is out of this world. Only these three legends can sound so surreal and magical. This is a magical arrangement and the voices cannot be matched.
It took my many times listening to this masterpiece to realize the high harmony was Linda's! I guess I usually had my eyes closed, floating away, and didn't watch the video. There's a brief two part harmony at about 2:26 where it shows only Linda and Dolly singing. I don't think I ever appreciated that she had that kind of range. I suppose that's usually the domain of background singers, and she alway sang lead. What an instrument she had.
I was really surprised by that, because in some of the other clips of the three of them, she sings the low harmony. Linda has an incredible range!
I've been listening since I was a a child in the 70's to Linda's gift. I'm a professional vocalist and I'm sooooo glad I lived in the same era and was able to see her live.
beautiful... this sort of perfect performance only comes from a lifetime of dedication to the art

So sorry for the infringe on your privacy. Beautiful song. Hello
Ronstadt's voice on "Telling Me Lies" from the 1st TRIO is killer. This is pretty damn beautiful as well. Linda and Neil Young were very good friends.
Dolly is the lead, but way that Linda and Emmylou weave their voices it becomes just one extraordinary piece of music. These are the absolute best of the best. It's a shame Linda's voice is lost, but we are lucky to have all of her recordings.
This was a beautiful performance by three very talented women. The musicians backing them were fantastic and creative and added the finishing touches to what I consider to be a masterpiece.

Hello Rhonda
How are you doing today?
I think of Linda now and then and feel so sad we won’t ever hear her sing again........Parkinsons is such a cruel illness it certainly robbed us of a pearl who really did sing songs for the lost and the lonely
But I saw her interviewed a while ago on the Tavis Smiley show. She talked about her disease. I don't even know if I could be as humble as she was, and I'd been through some pretty rough times. Linda is a class act and quite a lady. I was inspired by her wisdom ..

I think Linda Ronstadt is one of the classiest acts ever to come out of the States. Eloquent, charming, humble, kind,,generous warm compassionate, considerate and a voice ,a voice that has reduced me to tears on so many occasions. She really is a national treasure .
