Johnny was one of the classiest late night show hosts ever. I didn't care for his obvious chauvinistic views, but I guess he was from that era. But other than that he said a lot of wise things, and had a lot of wise observations. He also cared about animals very much, which I loved about him. And I remember the show, for some reason, after his son died in the car crash, where he ended the show by showing his son's best photographs, you could see the pain in his eyes and hear the pain in his voice like I'd never seen, and I realized he was a very private person but also very deep. It is sad he had to forego being a family man for his career. But, I still think he was a very smart and elegant man. I don't think any other late night host can hold a candle to him.
@Fishbabies How ignorant and stupid! What if something had gone wrong? Your Mum sounds like quite the DOLT! Ignorant can learn; stupid cannot. You’re laughing? What’s that say about your level of intellect? Hmm…
I have read that Joan Rivers negotiated her own show without consulting Johnny or asking for his advice. She made the deal and then told him after it was finalized. You could tell by his body language that Johnny wasn't a warm & fuzzy guy, but he was absolutely the King of late night comedy and no one has even come close since he left.
I've been looking for years for a unique episode. Early Robin Williams, great opening act (as usual for R.W.) and Robin is invited to have a seat, and a bit of his hilarious impromptu with Johnny. Next guest is Bob Hope, and it doesn't matter who follows Robin, no one can hope to compete. Now I understand the how & why of this night's show. Robin sits tight when Bob has his time with Johnny, I remember Bob's first line to Johnny as "Thanks alot Johnny". Robin was doing all he could to contain himself, sits still, quiet, clasped hands, but several times throughout Bob's chair time Bob would say something to Johnny and Robin would burst out in a 20 second manic riff, sit back down again, and Bob never knew what hit him, but Bob was, talent wise, hopelessly out classed. Been a lifelong quest hoping to find or run across that bit one more time.
What a great tip about the timing and the flow of my swing. Yes I have a problem with my 3 wood so now it sits in my bag. So much better contact with my 5 and 7 woods. At 72 now I have to remember I'm not 25 anymore! Love the game and the tips Danny. They keep me loving the game!

I saw Charlie Callas appear on The Tonight Show when Joan Rivers was guest host. Johnny was on vacation that week. He did a funny bit on drums making his signature sound effects. It was clever and he was a surprisingly good drummer. The night Johnny returned Ed Shaughnessy, the regular drummer in the band, performed an identical comedy bit making the sounds we associate with Charlie Callas. Johnny introduced it then laughed and complimented the performance but made no mention of the identical bit being done by Callas the week before. It was very odd and I wondered about it for years. After Charlie Callas passed away I read about the incident when Charlie shoved Johnny. He was banned from appearing on the show when Johnny was hosting. I did as much research as I could and found records of when Callas appeared while Rivers was host and Johnny was on vacation. Anyone officially part of The Tonight Show denied the snub took place. They might have not liked one another much but when Charlie shoved Johnny he was offended and felt disrespected. Johnny had earned the throne as King of late night television and it makes perfect sense that Johnny went out of his way to snub Callas.
Charlie Callas was a limited Las Vegas act. His schtick wore thin after only three minutes. Check him out on the short-lived, "The Jerry Lewis Show" which test aired on Metromedia (Later Fox) stations for one week in 1984.
Callas was a musician before he became a comic. He started out as a big band drummer. His comedy bits were quite funny for their time (comedy was a lot different back in the sixties) and the notion that Carson didn't like him is bs. I'm sure Carson didn't appreciate the disrespectful shoving but nobody would have appeared on Carson's show more than 50 times if Carson didn't approve of their talent.
My wife and I were lucky enough to get last minute tickets to see Carson at the Burbank NBC Studios back on Oct. 9, 1991. It was rare to see all were present at one time like Ed McMahon, Ed Shaughnessy and Doc Severinsen. Guest that day were Tony Danza, Rita Rudner, and the Allman Brothers Band.
They didn't tell the whole story of the Joan Rivers feud. She called Carson sexist but the reason that Carson was so mad at Rivers was that she took a show on Fox opposite Johnny Carson at the same time trying to take his viewers away. That's not sexism. That's a slap in the face of the guy who gave her her big break. Joan Rivers was an insensitive greedy jerk.
Carson was a jerk to many people. So if she is offered her own show what did you expect her to do? She wasn’t signed to Carson. What a ridiculous comment. SMH. That’s show business!!
Joan Rivers had her own career. She did well with the Tonight Show as a guest host and would have done a great job taking it on. Instead, it was given to someone else. So she tried to get her own show. Why would any reasonable person be mad at her for that? Johnny Carson, for all his skills and virtues, was in this case not at all reasonable.
When I was younger I would watch Johnny all the time and my friends would say shit about it and never understood why , Johnny Carson was the man of Late Night , kinda miss him 😒✌
I saw the Carson show in the 70's and during a commercial you could tell he and Freddy De Cordova (the producer) got into a little tiff. I think they resolved it before the commercial ended. Carson was his usual GREAT host but he barely engaged the audience, probably because he was so painfully shy. Still, the best night talk show I've seen. Runner up is Letterman.
Carson's frustration with Callas's reliance on scripted gags and lack of evolution in his comedic style reveals the high expectations Carson had for his guests.
Johnny was cool . Unlike any one else in show business & Hollywood. Was so loved by the biggest names in the world. Singers , actors plumbers, blacksmiths , farmers . Everyone loved him . He will be and is missed today. And no one has replaced him. Millions finished their day with few jokes and laughed with him. He was a small part of American life in those days. And kids like me would enjoy a few minutes of his show before bedtime.
The *REAL BETRAYAL* in regards to Joan Rivers was that she'd been offered and accepted a late night talk show that *COMPETED* with his long-running Tonight Show.
If you're real about it, there was no "competition" Johnny was the king, she said, she should have told him and regretted the way he found out, but she feared his reaction and apparently, rightly so
in FIRST 10 SECONDS - This channel MISSPELLED NEIL Diamond's name!!! Shaking My Head. Keeping up that exemplary BoobTube QUALITY there, Golden Rewind!!
Johnny was *VERY PRIVATE* about his personal life. You have to respect that. Many guests would tease and rib him about his multiple marriages to women named "Joanne/Joanna". That was usually the last time that guest appeared on his show.
Bob Hope just came on to promote his TV specials. Since they were on NBC the network pressured the Tonight Show to bring him on. He wouldn’t stay around always walking off after his interview unlike other guests who would move to the couch and stay until the end. This infuriated Johnny
@@stevedugan5036 Towards the end of Mr. Carson's run, Bob Hope would be relegated to the last guest segment. LOL. It started with Robbin Williams in 1987.
Personally, I think Johnny Carson WAS the LORD of Late Night Comedy. I know he was the Tonite Show Host for 30 years, but As I age, it just seems as though be was there for 40 or 50. Its just the fact that he was There from the time I could first remember...as I was born in 1965. And watched him till his retirement. It was a SAD evening when Johnny's Retirement Show aired in 1993. I hated it. I slso thought David Letterman should have been the New Host. But I also understand that my thoughts are just mine, and Is one of MANY, Millions or even Billions that watched his Show. I also have an Edition of the Jack Benny Program when Jack was congratulating Johnny on his being named the new Tonight Show Host. It was just folks like Bob Hope, Jack Benny, George Burns, Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr, Danny Thomas (Who was as Big as Jack Benny and all of the Big Boys, but put his Acting and Star stage of his Life, on hold as he and his Wife put Everything they were and had into St. Judes Childrens Cancer And Research Hospital. That, in itself, has put Danny Thomas at the Head of the Line as far as Hollywood Stars importance. Childrens Cancer and Leukemia has went from a 100% Death Sentence, to a cure rate of over 85%. How could ANYBODY beat that?? And, none of the Patients family's have to pay a dime for the treatment either. Bless you all
Really? That’s cool. I think it’s normal for Performers, who are that gifted. .. they, typically have big egos, but low self esteem’s. This bash documentary of Johnny Carson. The person that did it should be ashamed.
I see them showed Jason Bateman as if it were Carson’s son. I remember watching the Carson show with my dad and sister when we were younger. Probably too young to really be watching him lol but my dad would make a bowl of popcorn, one of his favorite snacks, and we would sit there and eat, popcorn, and tell stories that we made up and watch Johnny. The way we would tell the stories was one person would say a sentence or two, and then the next person would add onto it, and then pass it onto the next person. We will go round and round. We would have the craziest made up stories. One of my fondest memories of my father. There’s a lots of them, but that is one that really sticks out in my head. My mom worked third shift so my dad was at home in the evenings with us.
When Letterman used to guest-host, he used to kill on that show. He was SO GOOD that Johnny got threatened and gave Letterman a daytime show (that failed) in order to keep him away from the Tonight Show seat.
I agree about all those guest! I think you could throw in Don Rickles. Same crap over and over. What I loved is when John Wayne would crash his show half drunk. That’s when it was fun. He couldn’t say no to the Duke.😮😅
@@happydays8171 Do you happen to remember what year it was by chance that it happened? I hope David Tolley is doing very well, and I certainly do wish him all the very best of luck and happiness. @@chirelle.alanalooney8609 Yes, David Tolley is very charming. Google it quickly, all I could find was a tic toc video of 2nd visit, Johnny said his first visit was December 19th, no year. I'm guessing early 80's.
I'm 88yo and I was a great fan! J Leno wasn't bad, but I stopped watching The Tonight Show after he left! Although this was a biography! I still don't know whom he disliked! It's a shame they can't do anything right anymore!
Charlie's father asked him "Can I borrow your Car, son?", but Johnny remained Callous toward him. I actually never would have heard of Johnny Callas if it weren't for this video. But I've heard Maria Callas was a smooth Operator.
Bob Hope had lots of slick about him, but not enough to hide his thinly veiled racists tendencies! As more and more black artists came to be widely recognized and popular in the sixties and seventies Bobs comments became edged with bitterness. Perhaps you had to be a minority to see thru them, but they were definitely there!I think Jack Benny gave his butler too much attention for Bobs taste.
She never told Johnny that she was going to do the show. Johnny felt like she had betrayed him being that her show was in competition with Johnnys time slot. She became his rival and it pissed him off after all he had done for her.
As an introvert myself, I can totally recognize the same tendencies in Johnny, how he was always described as being a "loner" in his personal life, and how he was so reserved (or was negatively described as being "aloof" or "standoffish"). It isn't that you "can't" go to a cocktail party or a work function (or host the greatest late-night talk show in history) and be charming and funny and effervescent; it's just that you need that bit of down time to recharge, and sometimes people interpreted that as being rude or antisocial. I've long suspected that Dick Cavett was an introvert, as well.
The manager of the Palm Springs Airport revealed to me that, in his elderly years, Bob Hope would come to the airport late at night and walk the empty halls of baggage claim. True story.

Carson's frustration with Callas's reliance on scripted gags and lack of evolution in his comedic style reveals the high expectations Carson had for his guests.
talk about calling the kettle black
talk about calling the kettle black. Tommy Smothers proved it.
This is why Steve Martin and David Letterman were favorites. They spent time preparing bits for the appearance with Mr. Carson.
If it weren't for Philo T. Farnsworth, inventor of television, we'd still be eating frozen radio dinners.
My father met Bob Hope when he was in the army for WW2. He is the only person I heard my father say that he did not like.
The *REAL BETRAYAL* in regards to Joan Rivers was that she'd been offered and accepted a late night talk show that *COMPETED* with his long-running Tonight Show.
She owed him nothing! She was the real star!
If you're real about it, there was no "competition" Johnny was the king, she said, she should have told him and regretted the way he found out, but she feared his reaction and apparently, rightly so
RIP IN PEACE JOAN AND JOHNNY
He hated her for that. That was betrayal. And. he was so hurt by that...
@elisemiller13 He was very nasty. Not a nice gent.
Thank you for telling us where the one he hated was. If Johnny had so much control I don't know why he continued having hope on.
The network told him to.
Very long BIO's before the information promised in the title that doesn't start until the 17th minute!!!
What a dishonest clickbait...
Dishonest CLICK BAIT covers pretty much 97% of the swill on BoobTube
in FIRST 10 SECONDS - This channel MISSPELLED NEIL Diamond's name!!!
Shaking My Head.
Keeping up that exemplary BoobTube QUALITY there, Golden Rewind!!
And using Jason Bateman to portray his son, Rick?
Johnny was *VERY PRIVATE* about his personal life. You have to respect that. Many guests would tease and rib him about his multiple marriages to women named "Joanne/Joanna".
That was usually the last time that guest appeared on his show.
Born in the late 70s, but I remember Carson. No one was better with guests before or since.
Fast forward to the end Bob Hope, Joan Rivers and Charlie Callas.
do that often with g. rewind
Thank you
Bob Hope just came on to promote his TV specials.
@@stevedugan5036 Studio 1 was designed by Bob Hope for HIS shows. Once Mr. Carson moved to Burbank, they shared the same studio.
Bless you all
I didn’t realize I would miss Johnny Carson so much until I watched Colbert
Isn't that the truth.lmao😂🤣🤣
ColBARE SUCKS ASSSSSSSSSS
Yeah, Colbert is a political hack. And not that funny.
Love Colbert!❤
Colbert couldn’t shine Johnny Carson’s shoes Colbert is a non comedic Jack ass
Talking about comedian in America in my time Robin William is my best.
Johnny is still the king of late night!
💯
Norm Macdonald loved Bob Hope. And so I rest my case. If Norm liked it, it’s good.
Johnny went out with class. This hatchet job is a bit much. You don't get to the top by being a second banana.
The first wife, Jody, was NOT the one to have the affair with Frank Gifford. It was Johnny's second wife, Joann!
I once dated Johnny in high school. He brought me to the sock hop.
Are you in your 90's?
Really? That’s cool. I think it’s normal for Performers, who are that gifted. .. they, typically have big egos, but low self esteem’s. This bash documentary of Johnny Carson. The person that did it should be ashamed.
@billiebobbienorton2256
TROLL! 🚨🚨
Are u dating now?
I loved Joan Rivers! She was one of the truly funny female comedians.
OMG. She was vile. Mean.
Letterman?
Doubt it
Letterman was a goon.
As a fan, I enjoyed this look into a bit of Mr. Carson's persona.
He was a great entertainer regardless of his personality in private.
I went into labor with my daughter, January 1970 while Johnny Carson was on she has always been a fan of his. Lol.
Only about half a dozen guests he didn't get along with out of thousands? Quite a great guy with high standards.
I agree about all those guest!
I think you could throw in Don Rickles.
Same crap over and over.
What I loved is when John Wayne would crash his show half drunk. That’s when it was fun. He couldn’t say no to the Duke.😮😅
I saw a clip of David Tolly the great Piano Player that he chose out of his Audience, and his Audience loved David.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I happened across that. The original guest pianist had hurt their hand I believe. The follow up interview is equally heartwarming.
@@happydays8171
Do you happen to remember what year it was by chance that it happened?
I hope David Tolley is doing very well, and I certainly do wish him all the very best of luck and happiness.
I saw David Tolley on a show, but it seemed quite a bit later in years, so I'm wondering. He was such a very sweet and polite gentleman.
@@chirelle.alanalooney8609
Yes, David Tolley is very charming.
I believe that Johnny Carson would always be correct. The man was a genius. ....and egotist, of course, but also a genius.
His friends said that he was extremely generous with them too, especially gifting money and booking cruise trips.
Wow 🤯 all these years I thought they were bffs my mom and dad loved watching them together.
😂 an expensive racket...when you two are the reason it fails
Charlie's father asked him "Can I borrow your Car, son?", but Johnny remained Callous toward him.
I actually never would have heard of Johnny Callas if it weren't for this video.
But I've heard Maria Callas was a smooth Operator.
Frank Gifford’s affair was with Joanna, not Jody Carson.
Loved him. Thought was hilarious.
Or maybe Johnny Carson just felt that he was backstabbed by Joan Rivers
Bob Hope had lots of slick about him, but not enough to hide his thinly veiled racists tendencies! As more and more black artists came to be widely recognized and popular in the sixties and seventies Bobs comments became edged with bitterness. Perhaps you had to be a minority to see thru them, but they were definitely there!I think Jack Benny gave his butler too much attention for Bobs taste.
One has to be exceptionally immature to claim Bob Hope was racist. Mary Margaret Blumhorst is an idiot.
She never told Johnny that she was going to do the show. Johnny felt like she had betrayed him being that her show was in competition with Johnnys time slot. She became his rival and it pissed him off after all he had done for her.
Jonny Carson was the best. He made most of those people by bringing them on his show and propped them up
I know a man who gave up smoking, drinking, sex, and rich food. He was healthy right up to the day he killed himself.
Johnny Carson
Well, that’s 20+ minutes I can’t get back. All that, just to hear who Johnny didn’t like. Wow!
I enjoyed this very much.
Next time go straight to the comments like I just did, works most of the time for me.
Jimmy Calas, Bob Hope. There, I saved you 23 minutes and a lot of hot air.
Charlie Callas
The manager of the Palm Springs Airport revealed to me that, in his elderly years, Bob Hope would come to the airport late at night and walk the empty halls of baggage claim.
True story.
Some say he's still there, searching for his lost luggage
Bob Hope always left after his interview was over with Johnny. I bet that didn’t sit well with Johnny.
I love you johnny😂❤and my mother did too.
My wife and I used to watch him every weekday evening. He was the best and far superior to any of the talking heads late night hosts of today.
We all know it was Bob Hope
Fast forward to 20:51... It's Charlie Callas.... You're welcome
The Golden Rewind of Johnny Carson by a besotted fan - hooray!
