Right on brother. Fiona his wife is Irish , from Headford Mayo where my family is from. It was painful to hear of John's passing but his music will be with me till my final day
I've listened to John's music since 1975 I was just 15 year's old and had never had music make me smile and laugh at times when I was feeling down... I hope that 9 mile cigarette ain't been smoked yet by the time I see you again. RIP BROTHER
John’s skills with lyrics would appeal to the Irish, as would his use of music to forge friendships among strangers. His words make magic out of ordinary things.
Not fair... he'd fought cancer so bravely and was great at being a wise, old sage. But, in a way, his musical legacy gives him an immortality that most of us will never attain.
Without a doubt it would be a day you would never forget!!!! Such a talent in all he does. I don't think you would get much beer in you, cause you would be spitting it on the floor from laughing your ass off....funny funny bastard that he is!!!!! 🍺
This song is my mom and dad's song. They've been married over 25 years now, and both have seen John Prine in concert several times. They are both currently sobbing at the news of John's passing. Rest in peace to the greatest songwriter ever, and thanks for being the background music in my parents' marriage all these years, through the ups and downs. Sometimes all it would take is my dad putting this record on, and the argument they just had disappeared... the magic cure. We love you, John, in spite of ourselves.
I met John Prine in the early Eighties at Johnny D's outside of Boston...he was a sweet man who just wanted to make people feel a little better with his songs...he nailed it.
I first heard this song from a man I met 5 years ago. That man is now my partner for life and I still cry when I hear this song, not just tears of sadness but also tears of joy. Thank you John for your wonderful lyrics and beautiful music! I will forever be grateful to you. RIP.
I never thought a song that contains a lyric like “caught him once and he was sniffin’ my undies” would have me crying my eyes out before the sunrise but damn it here I am

HOWDY Y'ALL, my decesed wife & I used to sing this song together, on the 16th of March will be 2 years since her tragic death. I'd grab my guitar here in the house and we'd sing it(poorly I might add) but it's the only song that makes me smile and laugh instead of shedding tears. HEATHER YOU'RE NEVER FORGOTTEN ALWAYS LOVED
Such a lovely lifetime of memories y'all made. Hope you're never gonna let 'em go and can take some comfort in knowing that you meant so much to her that she took your love with her and still has it to this very day.
my uncle who i only met in 2006 after my dad passed away is the greatest man ive ever met ok so maybe he had some issues but he became closer to me than my father ever was and he was always listening to badass old school music and one day he put this on and said "this is our new duet" and at first i wqs like no way no okie crap for me but he insisted to listen to it and it became one of the many songs we belted out at the top of our lungs as we drove up from honey run rd (paradise cali before it burned ) that road is 1 lane old wagon road super sharp corners that goes straight up the butte creek canyon anyways we sang so loud that i litterally heard my echo thru the canyon... earlier today his body and brain failed and he was life flighted to a better hospital which unfortunately is far away from me since we are already displaced from the horrific camp fire that destroyed the little town of paradise i havent seen him in awhile and he is on life support as i type this and all i can do is belt out at top of my lungs "well he aint been laid in a month of Sunday's, caught him once and he was sniffing my undies,he aint real sharp but he gets things done ,drinks his beer like its oxygen hes my baby ,im his honey IM NEVER GONNA LET HIM GO" to some it might be odd that him being my uncle and i his brothers daughter would sing a song like this but it wasnt anything weird he was 45 years my senior AND my uncle but he was a funny ass old fuck and god bless his soul... just yesterday i told him to take better care of himself and if he dies before i see him again thst i love him and to give my brother a big fat kiss for me and slap my dad my brother passed on xmas eve 2018 so less then 2 months ago my dad took his own life in 2006 and thats why i said slap my dad for me And he said to me "you got it babe" i didn't think he would fall into coma 24 hours after that phone call but all my neighbors must think im insane for blasting this song and singing at top of my lungs!! this is for you uncle Kari 'in spite of ourselves we'll be sitting on a rainbow" GOD BLESS MY FAMILY us HAUKKAS are a dying breed leave a like if u read all of this means alot for me to tell this for some reason FEBRUARY 2019 edit :march 3rd 2019 My uncle kari survived but has serious brain/body issues and is going to need in home care for the rest of his life but he is alive thank you for all the likes and support! means alot to me Blessings

You rejoice how ever you want. Keep on being you. Dont let others rent space in your head. They shouldnt be judging you . Thats whats wrong with alot of out bros and sisters they dont say what needs to be said and shared If you keep things bottled up inside , it will turn sour or explode. Not good. I read and felt every word you typed. I commend you . Dont be wasting your time worrying what someone else might think or say about you. First of all they probably dont even know you so how can they say anything about you. They dont like you doing your thing and being Happy We are suppose to lift each other up and Love each other and help one another every chance we can. Thank you for sharing and caring for and about your Unc. Fly on and sing as loud and often as you want to. Thank you for being you and blessing me with what you shared with the world. Know too that you are blessed
It's yrs later and I still end up listening to john Prine. I can still hear my Grammy saying Amy turn that up. Makes me cry but I'm glad I have her reminding me of memories on how much she loved me. She gave up her life to take care of a 5 year old girl and gave me so much love and happiness. She died in 1989. I miss her so much
What a lovely woman she was! Thank you for keeping her alive by telling us about her. You were so very loved! We all need that one person in our young lives that will move Heaven and earth for us. God bless you.

John was the most honest, authentic, self-effacing, heart to heart communicator in the folk music world. You listen to one of his songs and you wouldn't hesitate to let him borrow your car or crash on your couch...he'd probably just write a song about it. Gone, but never forgotten.
This was mine and my late husband's song. I played it as his wake for a very short time as all of the old bitties were given looks...wth we sang this song to each other on the regular . Besides this is one that makes me smile in stead of crying.
John Prine is probably the best songwriter the world will ever know. He says so much in each lyric. On the surface, it seems amusing or simple, but it's so incredibly deep when you break it down.
I haven't heard enough of Prine's songs But I have heard a lot of Steve Goodman's songs. He is also great. He and Prine were also great friends. Goodman died way too young.
I cried and cried when I heard John died.Covid became so real that day. I listened to his music for hours each day for months while I sewed masks to be given away. His music is so comforting. As others have said, i felt like i lost an old friend.
I was 16 years old and started drinking very heavy. Dad found out, and said you should come drinking with me, not knowing his plan. We drank all night listening to John Prine. My life changed that night in the early 90's. Thanks
As I get older, I'm thinking this is the greatest song ever written. I've always known John Prine was a fabulous songwriter; but many of his tunes just get better with age.

We made love to one another that night like we hadn't done in years... I tell her all the time that she is indeed, my "Big Door Prize" Thank you for such a heartwarming song, rest in peace brother...
This was my late husband's favorite song. He felt so many of the lines were written about me, especially "swears like a sailor when she shaves her legs". I smile every time I hear this song because it reminds me of the wonderful, loving man I was married to for far too short a time. Thank you John. We will miss you so very much!
Music can transport us to other wordly places where I'm sure we connect again. My Mum's favourite song (one of the many) was "The 12th of Never" Mum is right there in my midst when I ever hear it now..years down the track.. Music Ay..our primal force I reckon. (Johnny Mathis)

John Prine is a personal favorite of mine, love this song during a divorce proceedings. I wanted to keep my wife, but she left, she wanted back later, but I had to say NO at that time.
Man I love this song. My sweet wife passed away 2 years ago and this is the first song that really reminds me of her and I smile ear to ear instead of shedding tears. Thank ya John from a good ol boy in Texas
"Those who say America has no culture have never read Mark Twain or listened to John Prine" Wish I could remember who said that to give credit, how apropos!
This song is pure genius. I like to sing to it over and over again when I'm down. John Prine was an open book with a keen awareness of the human spirit and heart. No One could translate this into words and song like he could. Oh, such a sad day. I will hold this songs dear to my heart until the day I die!! Hi, How're you doing?
Such a heart felt comment! My nephew committed suicide last week. He was a great young man! Chronic is what really killed him. John Prine was an awesome man and writer! I was just listening to his song, "In spite of ourselves" and read your comment. God bless you!
i remember i use to hear my mom and my dad up late singing this song, my dad passed away about a week ago. Last night i heard her listening to this song by herself.
Sure glad John left the postal service to write and perform. I have loved his music for almost 50 years and got to see him live not long before he made his way. My wife who considers herself a music lover was luke warm about seeing him. I lost count of how many time she said, “he wrote that too?” during the show.
You are so missed, John Prine. Hope you are singing up there in heaven and keeping the angels dancing and smiling. Your memory will always be a blessing.
My heart has shattered in 99 pieces, A very good man has left us alone, His body was broken, Yet the words he has spoken, Will comfort our souls, And help us go on. R.I.P. Mr. Prine.

Hey there im.irish too and just listening to him for the 1st time tonight he is brillant..im a happy man tonight
She's very amazing as well I love to listen to her sing this song amazing to both
John’s skills with lyrics would appeal to the Irish, as would his use of music to forge friendships among strangers. His words make magic out of ordinary things.
Quite possibly the greatest love song ever written
You may be right...❤️🩹
The most underrated under appreciated duets in all of country music.
John is one of the most under appreciated individuals in all of music

True Story
@Tom Johnson..... you can delete country ...... man is a genius
We lost a American treasure tonight. RIP
We really did.
So sad. He was one of the greats
Yes we did. Prayers and thoughts to his family and friends. 😢
Not fair... he'd fought cancer so bravely and was great at being a wise, old sage. But, in a way, his musical legacy gives him an immortality that most of us will never attain.
my thought and prayers are with his family and friends in this difficult time
John Prine is one of those guys you would just love to sit in an empty quiet bar with having a drink in the daytime.
Without a doubt it would be a day you would never forget!!!! Such a talent in all he does. I don't think you would get much beer in you, cause you would be spitting it on the floor from laughing your ass off....funny funny bastard that he is!!!!! 🍺
Perfect
Yep, and I don't even like bars.
I did and had no idea who he was, gulfport florida
quietest neighbor in the world
For the love of God, why am i just finding this now!!! Awesome!!!
He was a legend
Beautiful story. You brought tears to my eyes. So true. Thank you for sharing.
Yeah... fuck 2020.
He cast a spell, that's for sure. RIP, John!
Madeleine, That's a lovely story and beautiful tribute. God bless you & your parents. John Prine will be missed!
Me too…I’m 76, and John was Bob Dylan’s favorite. A treasure,treasured. 😢 😊
RIP.
I never thought a song that contains a lyric like “caught him once and he was sniffin’ my undies” would have me crying my eyes out before the sunrise but damn it here I am
same. :(
Brought back memories?:)
John Prine is simply amazing. I found this guy Brett McDaniel, he is good too. Not as well known. I think he plays out of Alabama. So much talent out there you guys. ruclips.net/video/nWpwnKcJzrY/видео.html
Lol
HOWDY Y'ALL, my decesed wife & I used to sing this song together, on the 16th of March will be 2 years since her tragic death. I'd grab my guitar here in the house and we'd sing it(poorly I might add) but it's the only song that makes me smile and laugh instead of shedding tears. HEATHER YOU'RE NEVER FORGOTTEN ALWAYS LOVED
Only folk in love can have fun with this one,,,,I feel Your pain,,,,gb
Rest in peace Heather, much love
God Bless you.
YOUR WIFE HAD A BEAUTIFUL NAME I SHARE HER NAME MAY SHE RIP
Such a lovely lifetime of memories y'all made. Hope you're never gonna let 'em go and can take some comfort in knowing that you meant so much to her that she took your love with her and still has it to this very day.
my uncle who i only met in 2006 after my dad passed away is the greatest man ive ever met
ok so maybe he had some issues but he became closer to me than my father ever was and he was always listening to badass old school music and one day he put this on and said "this is our new duet" and at first i wqs like no way no okie crap for me but he insisted to listen to it and it became one of the many songs we belted out at the top of our lungs as we drove up from honey run rd (paradise cali before it burned )
that road is 1 lane old wagon road super sharp corners that goes straight up the butte creek canyon anyways we sang so loud that i litterally heard my echo thru the canyon...
earlier today his body and brain failed and he was life flighted to a better hospital which unfortunately is far away from me since we are already displaced from the horrific camp fire that destroyed the little town of paradise i havent seen him in awhile and he is on life support as i type this and all i can do is belt out at top of my lungs "well he aint been laid in a month of Sunday's, caught him once and he was sniffing my undies,he aint real sharp but he gets things done ,drinks his beer like its oxygen hes my baby ,im his honey IM NEVER GONNA LET HIM GO"
to some it might be odd that him being my uncle and i his brothers daughter would sing a song like this but it wasnt anything weird he was 45 years my senior AND my uncle but he was a funny ass old fuck and god bless his soul...
just yesterday i told him to take better care of himself and if he dies before i see him again thst i love him and to give my brother a big fat kiss for me and slap my dad
my brother passed on xmas eve 2018 so less then 2 months ago
my dad took his own life in 2006 and thats why i said slap my dad for me
And he said to me
"you got it babe"
i didn't think he would fall into coma 24 hours after that phone call but all my neighbors must think im insane for blasting this song and singing at top of my
lungs!!
this is for you uncle Kari
'in spite of ourselves we'll be sitting on a rainbow"
GOD BLESS MY FAMILY
us HAUKKAS are a dying breed
leave a like if u read all of this
means alot for me to tell this for some reason
FEBRUARY 2019
edit :march 3rd 2019
My uncle kari survived but has serious brain/body issues and is going to need in home care for the rest of his life
but he is alive
thank you for all the likes and support! means alot to me

Andrea simon
Sing your ass off Andrea
at top of your lungs!
Sorry for your losses.
This is a Great song!

Lost a Mom and 2 brothers pretty close together ..this shit aint local ...Do the best you can and hope for the best ..Lol ..aint laughin at ya just laughin at the bullshit hands we get dealt .
You rejoice how ever you want. Keep on being you. Dont let others rent space in your head. They shouldnt be judging you . Thats whats wrong with alot of out bros and sisters they dont say what needs to be said and shared
If you keep things bottled up inside , it will turn sour or explode. Not good. I read and felt every word you typed. I commend you . Dont be wasting your time worrying what someone else might think or say about you. First of all they probably dont even know you so how can they say anything about you. They dont like you doing your thing and being Happy
We are suppose to lift each other up and Love each other and help one another every chance we can. Thank you for sharing and caring for and about your Unc. Fly on and sing as loud and often as you want to. Thank you for being you and blessing me with what you shared with the world. Know too that you are blessed
Russell Warrington
thank you
that was very kind words you just said to me
made me feel good inside
blessings and again
thank you
All the best to you. Keep on shining.
I miss her so much
😊
❤
God bless your G-Ma.
Thank you for sharing
What a lovely woman she was! Thank you for keeping her alive by telling us about her. You were so very loved! We all need that one person in our young lives that will move Heaven and earth for us. God bless you.
came here after hearing of his passing, I’m heart broken.
Emily B same:( so sad
Iove his raspy voice and genuine humaneness.
He was such a part of my youth...he will be missed, but he will live on in my heart.
It’s so sad :(
RIP John. Such a sad day. I listen to his music every day & always will
John Prine is a national treasure.
If he ain't he should be Matthew.
Rather, a world treasure.
He sure was. Sad saying that. Was.

So much love for John Prine. This one hurts.
This guy’s songwriting is absolutely incredible.
John may not have been a household name to many, he was a gem to all of us who did discover him. R.I.P. John
My mum and dad had great taste in music and for that I'm forever grateful. RiP Mr.Prine
you got that right
Saw him in ‘77… great guy, awesome performance, beautiful songs with meaning
well said
Treasure
John was the most honest, authentic, self-effacing, heart to heart communicator in the folk music world. You listen to one of his songs and you wouldn't hesitate to let him borrow your car or crash on your couch...he'd probably just write a song about it. Gone, but never forgotten.
This was mine and my late husband's song. I played it as his wake for a very short time as all of the old bitties were given looks...wth we sang this song to each other on the regular . Besides this is one that makes me smile in stead of crying.
God Bless you John.
Thank you for the great legacy of music that you made for us.
John Prine is probably the best songwriter the world will ever know. He says so much in each lyric. On the surface, it seems amusing or simple, but it's so incredibly deep when you break it down.
He says a lot by only saying a little. He is the complete deal. Love him ♡ ♡ ♡
@@jacquismith3277if only I could find my IRIS we would sing have eggs&catsup Oxygen Beer and shave each other
I haven't heard enough of Prine's songs But I have heard a lot of Steve Goodman's songs. He is also great. He and Prine were also great friends. Goodman died way too young.
I cried and cried when I heard John died.Covid became so real that day. I listened to his music for hours each day for months while I sewed masks to be given away. His music is so comforting. As others have said, i felt like i lost an old friend.
RIP John Prine. A modest man. A massive heart.
Well said Luke
WE WIN?@@rickhewitt852
I was 16 years old and started drinking very heavy. Dad found out, and said you should come drinking with me, not knowing his plan. We drank all night listening to John Prine. My life changed that night in the early 90's. Thanks
As I get older, I'm thinking this is the greatest song ever written. I've always known John Prine was a fabulous songwriter; but many of his tunes just get better with age.
This and dear Abby
I Agree!!
and souvenirs also...my father in law loved john prine, the first album is and probably will always be the best...here is the link ruclips.net/video/7lHkugF0nyI/видео.html@@thomasmcfeely8869
Great observation 😂
Dear Abby, the early years, had so much fun with that song, I would bellow it out in the Theater at OUL ,some liked it and some thought I was crazy. It was a win, win for me and I had fun while hanging lights.
Hold on John, the world needs your music.
amen, sister. who is gonna play his music?
Frederick Sharon sadly
The world has John Prine's wonderful music. Now, we will sing it in his place and in his spirit.
He's my baby and I'm his honey, never gonna let him go... just crying my old eyes out, a beautiful earthy no bells and whistles true love song. Thank you, the best, pure gold Iris and RIP John.
People calll him the poor mans Bob Dylan. i just call him genius.
Right! Love it☺❤

Dated for 4 years married for 36 years to my wife I would like to say thank you and I love you more than you can ever know
I wish I could give this song a thumbs up every time I listen to it.❤❤❤❤❤
Love how Iris just quietly steps forward and steps back with those Appalachian pipes. So modest, yet so impressive.
My wife and I have been together 39 years (1984) We saw this back in 1997. It turned into our song. Still sing it every time we hear it.
Yip same married 38 & it’s our fav. x.
As usual a fantastic John Prine song. Iris voice is amazing.
Iris Dement....what a uniquely womanly voice.
I love her old timey tone to her voice
she is a countryversion of Olive Oil... gagagaga
Iris n EMI lou hard to beat
Underrated for sure ❤
My ex-wife and I used to cover this song when we played. It's a bittersweet memory, but wouldn't change a thing. In spite of ourselves.😢❤
Just heard Viagra Boys ad followed the trail. This is brilliant!
lol same here. The original sounds awesome too
Wasn't sure about the VB cover when I heard it but this take charmed me right to pieces.
yup
Only took me listening to Viagra Boys 20 times before I noticed it was a cover haha
Same!! They did the song justice, not a big fan of covers.
I heard this song, and it warmed me to my bones, I played this video for her, and she said, "It's a true, honest redneck love song, heartfelt to marrow of your bones."
We made love to one another that night like we hadn't done in years...
I tell her all the time that she is indeed, my "Big Door Prize"
Thank you for such a heartwarming song, rest in peace brother...
This was my late husband's favorite song. He felt so many of the lines were written about me, especially "swears like a sailor when she shaves her legs". I smile every time I hear this song because it reminds me of the wonderful, loving man I was married to for far too short a time. Thank you John. We will miss you so very much!
you are a very lucky human!

Music can transport us to other wordly places where I'm sure we connect again. My Mum's favourite song (one of the many) was "The 12th of Never" Mum is right there in my midst when I ever hear it now..years down the track.. Music Ay..our primal force I reckon.

I cried like I lost a relative. He's been with us all our lives
John Prine is a personal favorite of mine, love this song during a divorce proceedings. I wanted to keep my wife, but she left, she wanted back later, but I had to say NO at that time.
I’m so sad to hear about Mr. John Prine. Sending him all the love and healing energy.
Man I love this song. My sweet wife passed away 2 years ago and this is the first song that really reminds me of her and I smile ear to ear instead of shedding tears. Thank ya John from a good ol boy in Texas
This is one of the best songs I’ve ever heard.
"Those who say America has no culture have never read Mark Twain or listened to John Prine"
Wish I could remember who said that to give credit, how apropos!
If you guys like John Prine, you would love Jason Evans. This is his song "Green River Sound." ruclips.net/video/HxM7jMHS3ks/видео.html
This was the song my husband and I chose for our first dance at our wedding, 18 years ago. RIP John Prine. And love to your family, friends and fans.
Hello dear, how are you doing today?
That’s beautiful!
Such a heart felt comment! My nephew committed suicide last week. He was a great young man! Chronic is what really killed him. John Prine was an awesome man and writer! I was just listening to his song, "In spite of ourselves" and read your comment. God bless you!
Played this song at our 50th wedding anniversary party lol
I can listen to John Prine forever
My Honey and I got married in 2023. This was our first dance song together.💕😻💕🤣
i remember i use to hear my mom and my dad up late singing this song, my dad passed away about a week ago. Last night i heard her listening to this song by herself.
😭😭😭😭
I'm so sorry
I'm so so very sorry.
I'm sorry for your Loss 😔
Sure glad John left the postal service to write and perform. I have loved his music for almost 50 years and got to see him live not long before he made his way. My wife who considers herself a music lover was luke warm about seeing him. I lost count of how many time she said, “he wrote that too?” during the show.
What an amazing song!❤
Why am I hearing this song for the 1st time? What an amazing song. Those voices paired together, WOW! This is one for the playlist!
Me too! Great song
It won't be the last time, will it?
I miss John Prine so much. We lost some great ones in the last two years. 💔
You are so missed, John Prine. Hope you are singing up there in heaven and keeping the angels dancing and smiling. Your memory will always be a blessing.
Every time I hear John Prine, my eyes get wet. I can only imagine how much more he had for us
My heart has shattered in 99 pieces,
A very good man has left us alone,
His body was broken,
Yet the words he has spoken,
Will comfort our souls,
And help us go on.
R.I.P. Mr. Prine.

I mourn his death but take comfort that the reason I mourn is that he was a gift to me and so many others. I am grateful for his life.RIP and Godspeed, John Prine.

Thanks for your beautiful letter MrPerfesser..you are speaking for me and goodness knows how he was loved by so many others with open hearts.
This was our wedding song. He wrote a real lovely and honest love song for poor folk. He picked quite a lovely lady to sing it with.
Just tryung to figure out what my life would be like without John Prine song...
My daughter played this for me and her father. She said this song is about us. Me and my husband. I cried when I heard it. Sigh. I love this song.
I love your hair and your soft voice it's like a song thank you I miss you but I'm sure you're running around and having a good old time you earned it I'm going to listen to all your interviews my dad was a country western band singer he did it all but he was too afraid to leave Vallejo can hardly ride in a car funny how people were like that back then maybe that explains why I never came to see me but that's all right it was only 40 miles okay John you precious God bless all you family I'm sure they miss the heck out of you God bless

my face can't help but put a big o' grin on it when I hear this song!!!!! John is greatly missed but we are so lucky to be able to go back and listen to his songs.
