John Prine: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

- March 12, 2018 | Bob Boilen -- An American treasure came to the Tiny Desk and even premiered a new song. John Prine is a truly legendary songwriter. For more than 45 years the 71-year-old artist has written some of the most powerful lyrics in the American music canon, including "Sam Stone," "Angel From Montgomery," "Hello In There" and countless others.
John Prine's new songs are equally powerful and he opens this Tiny Desk concert with "Caravan of Fools," a track he wrote with Pat McLaughlin and Dan Auerbach. Prine adds a disclaimer to the song saying, "any likeness to the current administration is purely accidental." That song, and his second tune, the sweet tearjerker "Summer's End," are from John Prine's first album of new songs in 13 years, The Tree of Forgiveness, produced by Dave Cobb. It was recorded with his longtime band in Nashville's legendary RCA Studio A. Guests include Brandi Carlile, Jason Isbell and Amanda Shires. There's even a songwriter's co-credit with Phil Spector.
For this Tiny Desk Concert John Prine also reaches back to his great "kiss-off" song from 1991 called "All the Best," and then plays "Souvenirs," a song intended for his debut full-length but released the following year on his 1972 album Diamonds in the Rough. It's just one of the many sentimental ballads Prine has gifted us. Over the years, his voice has become gruffer and deeper, due in part to his battle with squamous cell cancer on the right side of his neck, all of which makes this song about memories slipping by feel all the more powerful and sad.
"Broken hearts and dirty windows
Make life difficult to see
That's why last night and this mornin'
Always look the same to me
I hate reading old love letters
For they always bring me tears
I can't forgive the way they rob me
Of my sweetheart's souvenirs"
John Prine's latest album, The Tree Of Forgiveness, is due out April 13 on Oh Boy Records. It's available for pre-order from John Prine's official web site, iTunes and Amazon.

Memorial Hall, Dayton, Oh a million years ago, we went to see John play. He was alone. The crowd was talking and getting ready and he came out with a black acoustic guitar wearing a black suit and string tie, much younger than he is here, in his prime. He was pure class. When he stepped to the microphone the crowd went silent, and when he began to play his greatness, his talent, his music washed over the crowd. Every song brought rousing cheers and applause.
He was the greatest lone entertainer I ever had the good fortune and honor to see.
He would look over the crowd and make eye contact with lots of people, only for a moment.. I caught him looking at me and waved, and got a wink and a little smile. It was like he knew my brother and I played a lot of his songs and loved them all.
America lost her poet and guitar player the day he passed. Rest in Paradise, John.
We all love ya.
"When I get to heaven, I’m gonna shake God’s hand/Thank him for more blessings than one man can stand/Then I’m gonna get a guitar and start a rock-n-roll band/Check into a swell hotel; ain’t the afterlife grand?" - John Prine

Gonna smoke a 9 mile long 🚬
A beautiful tribute! Thank you.
Wonder how far he got through that 9mile long cigarette

Rest In Paradise, John Prine. The entire world will miss you so much.
Sad news tonight. RIP John
Devastated. Such a sad, sad day.
I'm sad tonight... Check out his due of In Spite of Ourselves with Iris Demet. It's my favorite of his songs.
I'll be halfway to Heaven with Paradise waitin'
Just five miles away from wherever I am.
indeed. now he'll get to chat with Jesus about the "forgotten years". Amen
I got no hate, I got no pride, I got so much love that I cannot hide. That sums up John Prine for me.
Who's back again to listen to this superb set?
I've never met John. He has been my best friend since I was nineteen. I'm now 56. All the best John.
I know how you feel. I'm 50 been listening to him 3o years. Feel like he knows me better than my best friends.I love this man very much n never met him.
72 here! Love his music.@@j.b.lickums4032

He has led us through life.
Well if your handle is son volt 99, that says something about your taste in music. Good stuff..
I can’t stop crying. So many people don’t realize who and what we lost tonight. My heart goes out to John’s family and everyone who was ever touched by his beautiful music.
Rest in Paradise, Mr. Prine.
I feel devastated by the loss of this man and his talent.
I agree. Sorry to make this about me, but I’ve never cried over a celebrity’s/musician’s death, before this. Such a loss for everyone.
Dan Alexander I just discovered him here a few months ago...and last night I cried, despite only knowing of him for such a short time.
I’m binging on his music and interviews.
Such a unique, extraordinarily gifted story teller. So grateful to hear his music in soul reflections through song.
I'm right there with you, Dan. I've been a fan for the last 45 years. This is a huge loss for us, especially in these times when we need gems like John to help us through. I am feeling this loss so very deeply.
I'm with you brother
In the space of 15 minutes, I learned that John Prine exists, that he's responsible for tons of absolutely legendary songs, and that he sadly passed a year ago.
What a roller coaster. I hope you're having a great time up in heaven, John.
John Prine is my personal hero. Simple songs. Much implied meaning. No self-imposed importance. Humility and decency. An American treasure.
Yes, John Prine in a nutshell. ❤
Only John Prine can make you realise the power of music he is simply the best storyteller that has been. RIP John and thank you for the songs.
I was so
. heartbroken with his passing that I couldn't listen to him for a long time 'cause all I did was cry. I'm finally to the point where I can listen again. I love his music whether it makes you laugh, cry or just puts a big grin on your face. I will miss him until I myself am smoking a cigarette 9 miles long! RIP John.
Best that ever was.
I met him in his later years. Once. He was a saint of a man, gave an unknown folk musician such encouragement. The one thing I will always treasure was him saying "Go on, play my songs. But make them yours. If you sing like you mean it I'm not going to object..." When I heard we had lost him I cried. Hard. Then I played "That's The Way The World Goes Round" in my next set and I heard him laughing.
What a beautiful story! Thank you for keeping his legacy alive!
Being a life long songwriter folks had always told me about John prine, for 20 years prolly, sadly I didn't give a listen until I heard that he had died from covid, to make long story short for the past 4 years I sit and cry and listen to his songs that are the best ever written three to five times a week and shoot myself in the foot that I didn't go see him live and pay attention while he was still alive. Moral of the story listen to anyone that anyone tells you is good while they're alive so you can go and see them. I don't think there was ever a better songwriter than John hearing his music changed my life.
Everyone is a Prine fan... if you’re not, you just don’t know you are yet.
Steve Regnier true. Didn't know I was until the video started.

Even deaf people like John Prine. He's that good.

"Summer's end came sooner than we wanted". Indeed it did. RIP John Prine.
Always loved and missed.
My uncle John was the best. I have been a life long fan since I was never sang lullabies as a child...only my uncle Johns songs. I never realized how legendary he was until later in life. Always took him for granted.
From Ann Powers' remembrance of John Prine, who died yesterday at the age of 73: “He hadn’t been well, off and on, for many years, but he also seemed oddly indestructible. Everyone’s love and need for his presence wove protection around him. But we are living in a time when no concept of protection seems adequate. Acknowledging that, I turned to Prine’s music. This is how we honor our losses as music fans: by holding close the recordings that keep a voice resonant past mortality.” Click here to read the full remembrance: n.pr/34ixO20

So Sad RIP Johm, ill mis you god bless
what a concert this was!!!
This video is just perfect to honour a fine man.
I had to put my dog of 14 years down on Tuesday. I brought her to the woods behind my house, a place that she loved. I buried her there. I came home and found out John had passed. I am an atheist but good god I wanted to picture John walking her to somewhere better. I want to think that she sits and listens to him play his timeless music. They are both feeling no pain.
Danny Keenan He walked her to something better. Stay safe, strong and best wishes from Monterrey, Mexico.
I'm sorry about your dog, they're so loving. I hope you find Faith in believing in God. We have a soul, something can not come from nothing and life is simply better when you believe, you feel it more than not.
This can be a chance to believe that maybe...*just maybe* there is something special going on here in your life. In this life. Your perception can consider it as slight silver linings , which can lead to defined lines.. or it can be considered as two personally-inflicted tragedies that happened to only you on thay day.. one will plant seeds for positivity and one will start you down a road where yoir breaks get cut. You may not need a defined sense of "God" in a traditional religious sense (many do not) to find the hope for something better in this world/life as it hurdles speed bumps towards your seemingly steady stride.. many do not. But I promise - even if its believing in yourself... we all need something to believe in. It is fundamental to our existence.. even if the belief is simply allowing oneself to exist within the turmoil of it all. To each their own.
But I am enjoying picturing the image of your dog wagging their tail while John is standing with him/her happily smiling down at you playing music for you whenever you need it. I believe they are together - wherever we go when we go where we go. Stay strong ! And keep getting stronger.
I'm sorry friend :(
@@michelem140 Thank you! I agree & wanted to share the same. People need faith now more than ever!!
3 years, still tears,
Like losing a family member, or part of yourself. American icon, John Prine.
An American original.
He got me through so much in life.
John's about my age; in intensive care for Covid as I write. Regardless of the craziness going on around me, his music has always brought me back. A real American treasure. Crying as I write this...
I feel. I've been very emotional about potentially losing him, I cant listen to his music without tearing up
🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
😭
Please take care.
Hear you, Patrick. I got up to the sad news he was gone...
The older I get, the more I appreciate John Prine. Something about his voice touches my soul.
Something about his voice is so comforting 💓
The soul whisperer.
Ann Moore - You’re not getting older, you’re getting better, Ann. And like all of us here, we’re accompanied, guided, and consoled by this beautiful bard called John Prine... Gone perhaps, yet immortal as he is beloved. RIP, John 😢
@@solooverland3666 So well said, thank you!
Here I am, weeping for a man who I never met, and had never listen to any of his songs before but everyone's comments and his lyrics reached my heart and I wish I had known his music before. Rest in peace John.
pop on a little "Big Ol' Goofy World", or "In spite of ourselves"...that'll make you laugh
My Goodness! I am feeling the same way right now. I just heard a snippet of 1 of his songs and goggled. Now I am sad I didn't know him... He was AMAZING.
We all lost the best friend we never met
One of the more lucky ones here! You get to hear it all for the first time now!
I’ve gone 34 years of my life not know JP until tonight. Thank you to Brandi Carlile for introducing me to this amazing song writer. So much great music to look forward to now
I spent my staycation in mourning and couldn't even speak the first day as I tried to explain to my family who John was and how important he STILL IS to all of us. Thanks John for making a 68 year old cry like a baby. It felt real good. Ohwyowyo. I agree that RIP means Rest in Paradise, eating peaches, kissin' that pretty girl and smoking that cigarette that's NINE MILES LONG.
and fishing and whistling in heaven
RIP - John Prine. We lost John Prine and Bill Withers in the same week.
Yeah, I know we're in a time of plague, but that is REALLY unfair.
Oh my God. How can we survive this? Two of the most beautiful among us...
Ain't that just fu__ed
Living breathing walking talking singing crooning gem. Appreciate him while he is here. Long may you ride John.
and go see him. he still tours.
He still tours and is relevant. It's good to see that he is appreciated by the younger generation. You could learn more from him than any professor.
Saw him last Saturday in Champagne, IL
Great show! Even better than when we saw him 2013. I love The Tree Of Forgiveness!
He's a National Treasure. Oh, wait they said that in the description. How about greatest living American songwriter?!
You could learn more from any mailman than any professor.
One of the best Tiny Desk concert ever . Emotionally Prine's broken voice is at his peak , i don't how many times I've listened ... really amazin' .
How could you not love John Prine?
An authentic, genuine American treasure.
Brilliant songwriter.
RIP Mr. Prine, you are missed by the entire world.
You made some beautiful music and millions of people smile.
Sis anyone else crying? Fifty years of John Prine in my life...I love him, I miss him...
Why in the world do they not have a statue erected in the Maywood Illinois town center of John Prine. It astounds me how few people here even know who he is. His words have changed the course of my life since the early 70's. Thank you John.
I just found out about him today. Mind blown that I had never heard of the guy
pete hicks I just discovered him a few months ago...and also was astounded I’d never heard of him.
What an incredible storyteller, unique, authentic, soul stirring...
Recomend it to the local council!
They have changed the course of folk music since the 1970s.
The whole world is crying today. A world without John Prine? I know we have his music but he made the world such a better place.
God, this audio is phenomenal. I’m listening to this at 340am getting ready to get up and hit another day in the backcountry of the western Montana mountains, this performance is exactly what I needed.
"then your heart gets bored with your mind and it changes you". It's amazing how he can put complex thoughts and ideas into just a few simple words that convey every feeling and emotion.
His songs held me up through the year after my marriage dissolved. I can't believe he's gone.
Ya Lost Dogs and Mixed Blessings did the same for me...
Listening to “All the Best” now feels like a farewell to us, like he’s wishing us the best, letting us know that we, as a world, can get through this.
:(
Oh boy I felt that one this way too
More tears 💔 but thank you. I’ve found that to be the case with a few other songs. Lake Marie,,,,end of the song “we gotta go now”. Punched me in the gut. He’s telling us, he has to go now.
♥️♥️💔 john prine brings good souls together
"...the sky is black and still now
On the hill where the angels sing"
Thanks mom and dad for being so tasteful and exposing me to such beautiful music LOVE YA JOHN!
I use to hate my dads taste in music. It turns out he was right all along. John Prine is pure genius!
i can't listen to summer's end without crying
You will be missed, Mr. Prine. Few people can weave words into lyrics like you did.
Thank you for the beauty of your simplicity
Saw John in Cinci quite a long time ago. Took a person to the show and she was taken aback on how the crowd sang along on so many songs...that was John...everyone loved him and his unique and beautiful story telling. His songs are timeless.
Thank you, NPR for introducing me to another great artist. What a legend.
Back in the day, when John was an 'upper comer' Johnny Cash said this about him: "He's 24 years old and writes songs like he's 240 years old."
Any time a man sings for free and takes pride in his work, It's Worth the price of admission.
Up and comer.
Somebody said if John Prine gets any better they might have to break his thumbs.....
@@jaspernewcomb5656 Kris Kristofferson said that about him.
@@beccaparson7435 right on Becca! I love John Prine's music it makes me feel right at home...
peace
He didn't sing it here, but as a gentleman of 76, married 50 years, the song "Hello in There, Hello" rings true for me. This man is a national treasure that too many folks have never heard or appreciated. Wishing John and Fiona recovery from this devasting virus.
Sadly, I was decades late to the John Prine appreciation party, and it’s so obvious that I missed out on something meaningful and truly special. I watch as many of his clips, songs, concerts as possible, and as much as his voice and lyrics are so full of life’s experiences, I equally appreciate his musicians and guests. The looks on their faces are noticeably full of pride and honor to be in John’s presence.
About the same the last 10 maybe 15 years. I do remember paradise when I was young in the 70’s probably. I believe it was popular on the radio and why wouldn’t it be.
there is something magical about john prine i think its his humanity
No way to say how much this man's work has touched my life for over forty years now.
“Summer’s end came faster than we wanted.”
It's 2023, and I still cry about losing this guy.
I do too

I'm 52 years old... and I've only just discovered John Prine's music..."Come on home"...wow...feel like I've been hit by a freight train
Kean Hall, I've only just discovered him as well. I'm 56 and wish I'd been listening to him for many years.
"Come on home" chokes me up every time. It's possibly the most beautiful song I've ever heard.
Wow. You're lucky. I wish I could listen to all his stuff again for the first time. Check out Townes Van Zandt next. Then I'll give you another one 😉
His first album is a masterpiece
Me too, 51. An odd blindspot. His music seems to sit in a place that many know but some of us just somehow missed.
Kean Hall me too...I’m 45, and just discovered him a few months ago. What a gift he had, incredible storyteller.
Rest easy John, I'm 21 years old and I discovered your music as a teenager. Absolutely heartbroken to hear about the news of your passing, although I'm still very grateful to have come across your music so early while you were still alive.

Thank you!! You give hope to us of John's age, so grateful to hear from the younger generation appreciating his great music!! Pass along the wisdom, please-- there's healing & understanding & peace to be found in great music like his!
love that all ages like his music,RIP John Prine The Best!
same here, just a bit older (24). he lives forever
This is my favorite tiny desk concert session. My favorite musician. How lucky we are to have had this genius in our midst for as long as we had him. The best live shows i have ever been to. I will miss him terribly, will have to rely on his recorded words. 😢
Back in 1979 at the Fairbanks, Alaska summer solstic Party, John Staggard up to our camp fire to sit and play and swap stories and my, my,my what a treat that was. One of those memories that puts a smile on my face every time. See ya soon John. They just found something on my lung that ain't purdy.
James enjoy the time you have because we just dont know how long we have. I lost too many people the last 6 yrs
James Haney how are you
RIP John, you will be so dearly, sorely missed. I hope heaven does exist and it's exactly how you imagined it.
Heard an interview where John was talking about his first show after his surgery where he was unsure of how his voice would hold up. He said he had a little trouble with it, but the crowd was really behind him and pushed him through it, a tear came to his eye and he got choked up. Not afraid to wear his heart out where anyone can see it, just like his songs.
it is September 30th, 2021, I am listening to this at 12:53AM and this is absolutely beautiful. Thank you NPR. Thank you Tiny Desk, and thank you John Prine. Rest in Peace Mr. Prine, those of use that are still around are lucky to be able to listen to and watch this over and over again.

“Bowl of oatmeal tried to stare me down... and won.”-- John Prine
Fortunately, I have the key to escape reality.... I grew up with my dad playing that for me. 💜
John makes it look so easy, which it is not. What a great concert. Thank you NPR for capturing Mr.Prine in his prime.
He’s not gone: just gone on before.
As I sit here tonight with my tears listening to this great storyteller I draw comfort knowing he is still singing as he makes his way up to Heaven...we loved you and always well...RIP John Prine.
His songs will be here forever 🙏🏼
"Valentines break hearts and minds at random".
Just take a moment to consider how deep that line is..... I'm so glad to have found this Tiny Desk and John Prine's music. I had heard his name in the past, but never got into him until now. He knows how to put into words what you thought you knew.
I can’t think of anyone that wrote or writes about humankind the way john did. With so much love, wit and charm. What a gem. I get emotional talking /writing about him ♥️😊
Smoke that 9-mile long cigarette, John. Rest in Peace.
Let his ashes float down the Green River
but he died of covid? maybe not
I can't remember having a heart this broken before. may flights of angels guide you to your rest. You made us all better with your songs.
For me, the loss of John Prine is the saddest moment of the pandemic. Such a beautiful soul who overcame so much and sang with such honesty, vulnerability, and humor. I’ll miss you forever John.❤️💕
His spirit is such a profound loss from this world. May he be at peace.
Rest in piece John. You’re the only artist I feel like I’ve known my entire life. I remember being a six year old going to my first concert ever at red rocks. I’ve never enjoyed music as much as then. You never disappoint. Still hurts knowing you’re gone. You’re music will live forever though

John Prine - burning a candle for you; you poet of the soul!
How many artist can claim that they still wrote meaningful songs by the dozen after 50 years in business? We will treasure his legacy in all the songs he wrote but his down to earth humor will be dearly missed.
Yes, What is it about Prine's songs that just leave us weeping? An opening of the heart in a world ever closing?
You wanna cry? There's an old video of Prine and Steve Goodman singing souvenirs, it's pretty magic. It meant something to Prine too, years ago when I last saw him he was still dedicating to song to Goodman. What a amazing duo. I'm glad I at least got to see it.
Someone posted on the guest book on John's website, "the last quarter of the 20th century wouldn't have been worth living without John Prine". How true.
An American treasure
I think Iris Dement put it best, he ennobled us all…and now Nanci Griffith has joined his band wherever it’s playin. Loved them both dearly.
This song brings up my deepest and saddest feelings about the death of my 42 yr old daughter on New Year's morning 2020. By choice (or not) some paths are predetermined. "Well I can see that you can't win for trying. And New Year's Eve is bound to leave you crying" says everything about the hopes and disappointments we all experience. Thank you John for saying things I couldn't. We will miss your voice. When words fail, music speaks.

"There's a hole in Daddy's arm where all the money goes . . . " may just be the best, and most troubling, line ever written/performed in music - all factors considered (including the painful time period with which it was penned).
Absolutely. That song resonated with my generation. We played it over and over again. I know every word, will never forget it. Brilliant.
I'm very sad to hear about COVID-19 taking hold of your health. Thank you for your wonderful music, John Prine. You are an inspiration at the highest level and a legend. Sending love to you and your family. 🙏🏻♥
I took a date to one of his concerts back around 2010. I had heard of John Prine, but really didn’t know many of his songs.
……halfway thru the concert I looked at her and said that he was the greatest songwriter that I had ever heard.
Powerful 🎶
Heartfelt sympathies to John's family, band mates, and friends. So saddened by the loss of John Prine, a treasure of this earth. Such a loss for us all-he will be sorely missed.....
Waiting for the news that he is well and happy again! Dear God, WE NEED THIS GUY!!!
I waited to hear this news too!😔
You got Prine to grace your studio!!! I'm blubbering like a baby!
Me too! Only 5 minutes in. What a treasure he is. ❤
He was a genius. His songs were masterpieces. And he had a beautiful heart and soul.
When I was going through the roughest stretch of my adult life, Johns music was a comfort & a friend (it’s a half an inch a water and you think your gonna drown). I’m 51, I discovered John when I was 13, nothing touches my soul like John Prine songs.
Thank You.
I've been a dedicated Prine fan since 1978. His music is as much a part of me as my right arm is. I treasure his music. The song "Souvenirs" reminds me of Steve Goodman and if you're Prine fan you know what that means. Excellent performance
I am so sad today, sad that I discovered John Prine for me only recently (I'm in my sixties), and sad again that I came too late to book a ticket to see him live, in Dublin. He's my new Dylan, so warm, so funny, so lyrical, so full of meaning and humanity ! God bless you, John !!!
He’s the best
Try looking forward instead of back on this one - you've got a whole world of wonderful music to fall in love with! Welcome to the Prine shrine; the rest of us have to wait ten years between records these days and you get them all in one go :-).
I am in my mid 50s and only discovered John Prine yesterday when I read about him being critically ill with the coronavirus. Imagine my surprise and yes sadness when I began a marathon listening of him on RUclips. He is like an old friend I've never met until now and in just one day became one of my favorite performer/singer/song writer of all time.
A great man who wrote the truth into his songs and changed the hearts of many many people.
So loved John Prine still do. He's a souvenir of my life 45 + years of them. First saw him live with another beautiful soul, Steve Goodman, at a small many years gone venue, Rainbow Music Hall Denver, CO. Both these guys made me and still make me cry and laugh, such artistry and beauty. Thanks NPR!!! 😢 &😅
Thank you Mr. Prine for this gift you have given to so many. You truly have written some of the most beautiful music.
One of the absolute greatest. His songs come from a special place . Thank you John Prine.
It has been a few days and I can't stop listening to John Prine. He represented the hope I had inside me. Somehow, when God took him home, a lot of the hope I held went with him. I prayed so hard for him to survive this. Now, all I can do is pray for Fiona and his boys. Hope you got that cocktail John and that 9 mile cigarette. We love you 💔
Me too. Prayed so hard for his recovery. But I didn’t know how sick he had already been.
Sitting here crying, but still managing to laugh at John's jokes through it all. What an incredible person.
His music changed my life. Sending healing mojo your way, John Prine.
Thinking of John today. Timeless music and storytelling. Fight hard, and get well soon. America can't lose you just yet.
I was broken hearted when we lost John Prine. He was a great song writer and a wonderful human being and we are 15:10 running out of his kind. Miss you, John Prine.
John was a friend since 1973, I still hv his original press records in Angel covers Great man
This man who makes a living writing and singing searing, unforgettable songs makes all of our lives so much brighter.
Has to be one of the greatest writer-singers of his kind, just love him!
Just listening to my weekly church on the radio. 104 1 real radio Sunday Morning Coming Down, they play alot of John's music and this how I grew to love him after finding him singing with Kasey Musgraves just last Jan. 2020. His words cut through to my soul and make me laugh in the same line. Think of him often having a cocktail and smoking that 9 mile long 🚬 You are truly missed John by so many fans, new and old.
Listening again tonight is just the most glorious and the saddest night...I will miss you, John, forever and ever. I so hope you are fishin' in heaven.
Living legend and one of the best songwriters of the modern age.
