When I came home from Vietnam I was lost for log time. I heard John's song "Hello in There." I realized what my parents were going through and forgot about myself and called them for the first time in a decade. His song woke me up to what really matters. Thank you John.

I've been listening to John Prine for over 50 years. I bought his first album in 1971. I introduced my family and many friends to his songs and music. His passing took a part of my being with him because there isn't anyone, in my humble opinion, that will ever come close to portraying life into lyrics as John could do so eloquently. I can only hope that when I leave this world I end up where you are still playing and singing. To the "people" who gave the thumbs-down, well....Some humans 'aint human.
Woody Guthery was before John but I will always feel John was the best in my lifetime (73) and I hope my great grandchildren will produce a new one from their generation.

My son recently introduced his 81 year old mother to John. Son took me to one of John;s concerts in Madison, WI last month. we had second row seats so we could see every one of John's expressions. It was just a fabulous concert.
I have not heard of John Prine prior to the news of his sad passing. I have been listening to his songs. God comfort to those who mourn his passing and give repose to this talented man's soul. His body is no more, but his legacy in his songs will live on. And Today, he got a new fan. RIP John.
I think this is the most genuine statement that one can make thanks to the internet. John Prine will be more popular in his immortal death than in his finite life.
Me too! I didn't knew his work until I looked for what that John Prine buzz was all about. And I found a great writer and composer! RIP John! Another fan!!!!
I was a photographer at the Old Warfield in San Francisco (Owned by Bill Graham back when-early eighties) John Prine played one night. We sat in the green room and talked for a while. Genuinely one of the nicest people anyone could ever have the pleasure to meet. Great guy. Love his music.
Having listened to John Prine for more than 40 years, cleverness always was, in my very humble opinion, what stood out the brightest among those many factors that accumulated into the sum total of his songwriting brilliance. That was God's gift to John, and John's gift to the world.
I've listened for that long as well. Loved his way. His dry wit was always there, but it was heart that beat behind that that I liked the best. He touched me where I live.
1st song i heard of John's was this song last year. Now it's my turn to catch up with his music over the next 40 years while the wife writes out her grocery list. R.I.P John
When I was a senior in high school, in 1974, a few of us went over to one of our English teacher's houses--one of those cool teachers who is not afraid of getting to know students well in a healthy and balanced way. Smart guy; loved books and poetry. I was talking up Dylan and Arlo Guthrie. He rose from his rocking chair and said..."you've got to listen to this: a singer songwriter by the name of John Prine and this album, Diamonds in the Rough.--one of those life-changing moments. I still get into all kinds of music--folk, progressive, jazz. Good music is good music. I love Van Morrison. Endless discoveries in there. Same for Dylan. Same for the music of JOhn PRine. Probably a reason I became an English teacher myself and a storyteller / composer. Praying for John to come through and help keep our hearts beating with the humanity of his music. One of the greats.
As my poem said about my sons who died after a long battle: "His song had been sung; his race had been run"...We are the winners with these beloved pieces he left behind for us to enjoy while we are still here. "Lady Di"

I've listened to Mr. Prine for fifty years, I knew when he passed away, their would be a huge Entertainer missing. Hope he has shook God's hand. And now in Western Kentucky where Paradise flows. Someday maybe I'll hear that new Rock and Roll band. Rest and go easy my friend.
Something about this gentleman just warms your heart. Perhaps it's his down-to-earth humanity. When you couple that with his lyrical talents that describe much of the human condition in such a sweet way, well, what's left to say.
Great singer and song writer wish knew him when he alive his wife must be very proud to have a wonderful happy human being my heart goes out to her wish I had half the talent he had how utterly sad he had to die with that Covid rip maur calif
I play guitar and sing (both poorly). My wife refuses to let me play this song when she's around. So I play it when I'm on the side of town... along with many other Prine songs. GREAT songwriter.
I know right! Never even heard about him until he passed and now I am discovering a great human being who filled halls with humor and heartfelt lyrics that I struggle to wrap my thoughts around.
Was at John's concert 2 years ago, even at his age and lesser vocals his performance was unbelievable. Fully engaged his audience with awesome charisma and storytelling, his songs and music was just an added bonus. After 2 hours straight jamming without a break, at the end of concert he dismisses his crew and does a guitar solo. Had a full concert hall on our feet cheering. Will never forget it! Thank You John, You were one in a million!!!
Many of the greatest artists all focus on a special area they are so experienced at. We have Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell, and thank God -- we have a John Prine. His little short story songs are all so special and easily relatable. None of the other greats really write like this. They may dabble, but a Prine song is a Prine song. And the way he sings it always makes it special. The man is a national treasure.
Totally agree, John is awesome and has been a national treasure and a personal treasure of so many for so long! Authentic troubador; class act; love him!
Everything you said is so true about this gifted and talented man, indeed a national treasure and his music will still be popular long after he's parted this ole earth.
I'm at a loss, a very big loss. Glasses held high: To John Prine, though our hearts are heavy our souls are rich, well done! We love you John, and we are damn sure u loved us back
Brilliant lyrics. Good to know that even someone as phenomenal as John Prine is human and makes mistakes too. Speaking as a performer myself, this is hugely comforting! RIP John
This song is pure genius. I like to sing to it over and over again when I'm down. John Prine was an open book with a keen awareness of the human spirit and heart. No One could translate this into words and song like he could. Oh, such a sad day. I will hold this songs dear to my heart until the day I die!! Hi, How're you doing?
Lord help, I've been listening to him now for about 4 hours - gosh I miss him - what a writer; what a singer; what a funny, quirky individual he was . . . nobody like him. I still remember headin up in my yellow1968 Dodge to go see my sister up in West Virginia . . had all the windows down with my hair beating my face to death and singing along with him to Muhlenberg County while driving through Muhlenberg County - now THAT was living - my idea of it anyway - completely happy and sad cause that's the whole story of me and country music!
Pretty much my life from 1973, John Prine was the voice inside my head. I was a first year MFA grad student at LSU in 1974, but I did not have any assistantship so I had a job working the night shift at the Union. John Prine played in the auditorium at the Union where I worked one of the night’s I was working there and I could hear him from time to time as I did my job, but it was small just bit and pieces. I wanted so badly to hear that man whose work spoke to me so much, but as it turned out, about all I heard was cheering and applause. He and his work have meant so much to me till this very day . I had a good life from that point on with a few John Prine moments tossed in there and I am still lucky to have stayed true to my younger MFA aspirations and I still practice my craft as a visual artist every day. I love John Prine and miss him so much.
"When you get done talking I'll come back downstairs, and assume the body of the person you presume who cares" *This is where real man cry* R.I.P John Prine, he will be missed, but never forgotten. I hated to see my Parents crying after his passing, he was and will always be there for anyone by his side in spirit.
I have been listening to him a long time but I dont care for all his songs , only the ones that mean something to me I love magnolia wind and some others . one of the best artists that I have listened to
So sad to learn John lost the battle this time. He might be the greatest storyteller of all time. His music will endure for a long long time. I wish John eternal peace. I will continue to listen to his music and smile.
I had heard of John Prine for years but didn’t bother to listen to his music. Wow, my loss! I love his music and now have another favorite storyteller. A lot of artists are never truly recognized by the world until we lose them. I hope and pray John is one of those individuals. What a gift from Heaven. Hope he’s having a great time jamming with Steve Goodman and other old buddies.

No One could translate this into words and song like he could. Oh, such a sad day. I will hold this songs dear to my heart until the day I die!! Hi, How're you doing?
Started listening to John Prine in 1971. We used to party with several people all of whom appreciated this poet for the common man. We'll miss you,John. Thanks for the great ride.
There are a few great songwriters, and then there"s the Royal Imperial Johnny... I learned how to write songs from playing his tunes for hours on end. I'd come home from work, and sit on my bed and start playing his tunes, all of a sudden it was time to go to bed. One day, after writing many songs, I wrote a one that stuck to the wall. Everyone said, what Prine album is that off? Over the years they sound more like my songs, but you can always hear where they came from..... Thank you Sir John....I hope to someday to whistle and go fishin in heaven with ya buddy.
I've been a fan of John Prine since we listened to him in our barracks in Blythville Ark. in the late seventies. We used to get toasted & listen to his album & laugh our butts off!!!! Those were the good old times!!!
"When you get done talking Ill come back down stairs , and assume the body of the person you presume who cares." Be so grateful to have John Prine, pure genius songwriter and singer!
I hadn't sat down and listened to you for nearly 20 years. Damn-what a waste of time that was! Thank you for the easy listening and the stories. You won't be forgotten again.
John Prine is a legend. The one thing I love about him is his humility on stage and acts like a normal human being while also on stage. He makes a mistake and responds to it by owning. In recent years less and less singers and performers act with that sense of humanity when they are on stage. They are almost "too perfect". Flawless because of all the technology or are completely full of themselves. They're not genuine. John Prine is a wonderful example of a genuine everyday person making a music career and being successful. John Prine is an inspiration.
It reminds me of when I saw Gordon Lightfoot perform once. In the verse of one song, he stepped back strumming and pacing back and forth, then completed the song. After it was over, he apologized, and said that he forgot the lyrics, even though he wrote the song.
I remember hearing his name but never listened to his music until he passed away. My son and i both fell in love with it and I now sing many of his songs over and over until I know them by heart.
Every time I watch this video, which is lots, I get a kick out of John's backup guy on his right. You can just tell he absolutely loves playing these songs! Considering its been close to 20 years since this was recorded I hope he's still out there playing, or at least sitting in a chair listening to all the great music he is a part of.
I discovered John a few years ago....with regrets it wasn't a few decades ago. His lyrics are pure perfection. Thank you God for John. And John, if you're reading this, give humble thanks to God that he gave you so much talent and are using it to the fullest. Wow!
John Prine was one of my dads favorite musicians, up there with Joe Cocker and Dave Mason, many fond memories to waking up around sunrise to my dad blaring Illegal Smile while smoking one with his coffee and playing with his dog Action Jackson.. great memories from when we decided to live together when I was 21 lol

I can relate to that start. Walked into a bar to play one night strapped on the guitar and got three or four words in and lost all the words. So grateful to have had John Prine in my life for 40 years. Godspeed old friend. Godspeed
It’s been a few months now since John passed. It’s easier now. The pain and sadness recede, and the warmth and laughter remain. Thank you, John, for everything you gave us.

A 75 yr old friend of mine introduced me to john prine music lately, wow, where have I been? He is brilliant.
Good damn timing I'd say 😊
We tend to hide our good secrets. LOL.. Glad you found John. he's a classic treasure. He makes me laugh, sing, smile and cry, and I have to have my daily dose of JP that goes on for hours. Enjoy Paul

I love this guy. So real. My son told me about John Prine. I have been a fan ever since!!!!❤ his music.
Never heard of him?!?
You must be a youngster... LoL
@@landyalmond7742 I am certainly young at heart. Thanks for the lovely compliment.
Me too! I didn't knew his work until I looked for what that John Prine buzz was all about. And I found a great writer and composer! RIP John! Another fan!!!!
Walter, found him four years ago and been listening daily!
I was a photographer at the Old Warfield in San Francisco (Owned by Bill Graham back when-early eighties) John Prine played one night. We sat in the green room and talked for a while. Genuinely one of the nicest people anyone could ever have the pleasure to meet. Great guy. Love his music.
Lucky you, that would be incredible!
R.I.P John
Chris D a great portfolio. Do it
And that was it, the wit... Cause as much as he was on the other side of town, there was the clown... Genius
You guys are gonna hate this buuut...he was so good he shoulda been Canadian
I only wish I knew about this guy 20 years ago
It’s never too late
"Lady Di"
Nice to put an artist in the context of your life.

Ricky I'm sure you know a man called Richard (Dick) Farrelly was a member of the Garda the Irish police in the 1950s he was also a songwriter his best known composition was The Isle of Innisfree which was adapted as the theme song for the iconic movie The Quiet Man and was a huge hit for Bing Crosby...
James Farrelly You'd probably like the movie 'Sideways'.
Who the hell could NOT Like this mans work?
Mike Mits just don’t get it. Who could hit the thumbs down icon???
That's a good question but you know, I can't help but think JP just wouldn't give a shit.
Back then, Johnny Cash said: John Prine is 24 years old but writes songs like as he's 240.
Actually I think Kris Kristofferson said that :-)
very well put by Cash or Kris . thank you !
That was Kris

Something about this gentleman just warms your heart. Perhaps it's his down-to-earth humanity. When you couple that with his lyrical talents that describe much of the human condition in such a sweet way, well, what's left to say.
You got it

Great singer and song writer wish knew him when he alive his wife must be very proud to have a wonderful happy human being my heart goes out to her wish I had half the talent he had how utterly sad he had to die with that Covid rip maur calif
Why would people post a "thumbs down" for this? If you don't like this genre of music don't listen! I hate haters.
Sherrell Richmond idiots!
Because people suck.
No, good people, don't bother hating, the thumbs down people all over YT need recognition for something. That's all they got. Sad.

I love the way he handled when he made a mistake I i could hear it happened so fast
I play guitar and sing (both poorly). My wife refuses to let me play this song when she's around. So I play it when I'm on the side of town... along with many other Prine songs. GREAT songwriter.
Been homeless, prison, lost, and abandoned, thank God, I'm here alive, sobor, and happy 😁 as a lark...... GRATITUDE
Hang in there brother...your time will come..🎉
Never knew of him. Just discovered him. He's a genius...or was one. RIP
Me too. I feel like the world deprived me because I didn't know.
Saw him in folk festival in Edmonton - Alberta summer 1984 - 1985 . Awsome man , with a heart of gold
You have many many days of great music ahead of you.
Also check out his good friend Steve Goodman. Another world of fine music there also.
I know right! Never even heard about him until he passed and now I am discovering a great human being who filled halls with humor and heartfelt lyrics that I struggle to wrap my thoughts around.
Heck yes best story teller and song writer Ever. Thank you JP
One of my greatest achievements of being a parent was allowing my children to listen to this man. They both still love him
Was at John's concert 2 years ago, even at his age and lesser vocals his performance was unbelievable.
Great words,so very true,he was a Great human being, and the greatest songwriter of all time
Many of the greatest artists all focus on a special area they are so experienced at.
National treasure. I like that. And I agree.⚘
AMEN
Agree!
So wish I had noticed this talent sooner.
I'm at a loss, a very big loss. Glasses held high: To John Prine, though our hearts are heavy our souls are rich, well done! We love you John, and we are damn sure u loved us back
Prost!
My glass is held high to you all and to John.

You just know the thumbs down people are those you meet and instantly can’t stand.
Even before they open their mouth!!
Duke jpf They’re Trump voters.
Gloria, I have been listening to John Prine's music since 1971 and this Trump supporter is certainly one of his biggest fans.
No desire to ever meet any of them....
The kind of people that your dog instantly hates!
Hello! How are you doing today! Please pardon me for intruding into your privacy but I just wanted to know if you're a fan!....Stay safe!
"When you get done talking I'll come back downstairs, and assume the body of the person you presume who cares"

R.I.P John Prine, he will be missed, but never forgotten.
I hated to see my Parents crying after his passing,
he was and will always be there for anyone by his
side in spirit.

So sad to learn John lost the battle this time. He might be the greatest storyteller of all time. His music will endure for a long long time. I wish John eternal peace. I will continue to listen to his music and smile.
I will miss him for the rest of my life and maybe longer.

RIP John Prine. He had a unique ability to see the pain ordinary people live with. He also had a great sense of humor. What a rare combination!

so many stories and I can't recall one bad one.

Started listening to John Prine in 1971. We used to party with several people all of whom appreciated this poet for the common man. We'll miss you,John. Thanks for the great ride.
Top shelf. Americana at it’s finest. This guy oozed talent.
R.I.P. Sir. Thanks for the great music.
I've been a fan of John Prine since we listened to him in our barracks in Blythville Ark. in the late seventies. We used to get toasted & listen to his album & laugh our butts off!!!! Those were the good old times!!!
"When you get done talking Ill come back down stairs , and assume the body of the person you presume who cares."
Be so grateful to have John Prine, pure genius songwriter and singer!
Pretty sure PBS or NPR introduced me to John Prine. Thank my lucky stars everyday John.
My kind of music. RIP Sir.
RIP, the world is a better place because of you John.
It's good to see the sense of humor he has after the screw up. Came back like the true artist he is and nailed it.
It reminds me of when I saw Gordon Lightfoot perform once. In the verse of one song, he stepped back strumming and pacing back and forth, then completed the song. After it was over, he apologized, and said that he forgot the lyrics, even though he wrote the song.
I didn't catch the screw up.....?
One of the great stand-up comedians, among his talents. Just bam-bam-bam-bam, four quick & funny jokes after he "blows it."
artist indeed
If you're gonna blow a song onstage, do it John Prine style!
Mark says John Prine was a great singer , storyteller, and lovable jokester. He will be missed, find rest John and peace be with you and yours.
I remember hearing his name but never listened to his music until he passed away. My son and i both fell in love with it and I now sing many of his songs over and over until I know them by heart.
Me too and now I feel like I cheated myself out of some happiness.
So cool to have that experience with your son. Happy for you
i just now became a John Prine fan. I never knew.. . . . I am proof we can all learn to appreciate the better.. . . .
I met john in the early 80s in st. Louis. He was so humble, God rest your soul john, your a true treasure.
