Beautiful. Almost 60 years I've listened to your music, Ms. Baez. About 50 for John. These are hard times, I think as hard as any of us have seen in our (for some of us long) lives. It may sound kind of corny, but like so many other times in our history, music will help us get through it. Get well soon, Mr. Prine!

John Prine is the singer I've seen in concert more times than any other; going back to the early 80's at least a dozen. I actually won a contest a few years ago that the Ryman had for two Prine tickets. People had to turn in a video of themselves singing one of his songs and John himself was the judge. I sang "That's The Way The World Goes 'Round" with a "happy" enchilada for a prop. I was happily surprised when John picked me as the winner! In high school, I worked in the (no longer there) Hillside Mall in a little music store named “Hillside Music Center”. The store sold guitars, albums, and some audio equipment. Every once in awhile John Prine would come in to buy guitar strings. We must have been nearby for him. My co-worker and I would get so excited, we’d say, “John, why don’t you try out some of these guitars hanging on the wall??” And he was so nice...he’d smile and then he’d take a guitar off the wall and sit on a little stool and give that guitar a workout! Damn. What a dude.
Praying for you recovery Mr. John Prine. I love the story of when you were a postman in cold Chicago and used to climb in mailboxes and write songs. Your take on life is like no one else's. A true original.
What a wonderful tribute from one legend to another. I'll keep John and you in my heart. They don't make a lot of great artists like you guys anymore. Peace be with you.
I am 69 years old, live in South Africa, we are currently in lock down here, Mr Prime is one of my favorite singer song writers, we pray for you Fiona.
I first learned about John Prine over 20 years ago, when I asked my my mom what she wanted for Christmas. She said a John Prine cd. I went to the record store and bought his Anthology album. I listened to that over and over and over.
I first heard of him when I heard Bonnie Raitt sing Angel from Montgomery. I had to know who wrote the song. I’ve read a lot about him. He’s a sincere, kind, and generous man. And humble. There’s a little chance that he will beat this. He leaves behind a gift that will never stop giving.
O, Joan, I can remember listening to this song on my Diamonds and Rust album and it really hit me hard. I had seen prejudice against the elderly all too much at my young age of sixteen. I started talking with my friend about how this song had touched me when she found me in tears sitting on the back porch, album in hand your sweet voice echoing through the old wood home she was renting. I said that I promise that I will always give anyone needing attention my love. Something I was able to do as a Hairstylist, I gave each and every client special care and when cancer cut my career short I have plenty of time to keep my promise, I lost everything financially and now live with lots of old people ln a nursing home! ;) I had a special friend that I thought of (still do ) every time I hear Diamonds and Rust, so thank you for that beautiful song.
Good morning from New Zealand. This dedicated song came up on RUclips this morning. As well as enjoying hearing the song, I was particularly moved by your comment. I want to relay to you my deepest appreciation for the love you have shared with so many others throughout your life. You remind me of myself regarding your empathy and the deep prompting you felt which lead you on in the direction of your natural ability to love broadly and deeply. It has been a pleasure to read from a wonderfully loving, caring, purposeful and inspiring person. I would love to know more about you or share further inspiration.. I wonder how that csn be done? If there are no opportunities, just please accept my thanks and admiration. We are all currently in lockdown in New Zealand. I am a retired nurse. The lockdown has given me a greater appreciation of a broader selection of neighbours. Everyone has been so quiet. The only things I strongly remember hearing in the neighbourhood are 2 pieces of music. When the first began, I thought 'oh no, someone has their stereo blaring which will destroy my peace and serenity'. But I then noticed the words "Call me, call me, call me call me anytime, call me". It was a lovely surprise. The one song ended and the silence returned. The second sound that I will not forget came from a large house where several young professionals live. Suddenly someonè there played an orchestral instrument (not sure what). There has never been a recital from the house before or since Easter Sunday. I was prompted to then sit down and play something I could remember on the piano. I hoped to add to the atmosphere and human communication via music during lockdown on that day. I am very well aware that while we will be free to leave our neighbourhoods some time soon, many people are in permanent lockdown, and that lockdown ends when their lives end. I am pleased to know that many people have requested this compassionate song and that Joan selected it to share with the world. I will certainly listen to more songs of John Price's. Thankyou again. From Wanda.

Hello In There, is one of John Prine's most poignant songs. It's a song that can make one a better person after hearing it. It always makes me tear up a bit. I get that shiver, you know. Nothing is better than hearing Mr. Prine sing it. However, this is a heartfelt version by Joan Baez. I sure hope that John Prine saw and heard this clip. Thanks Joan. That golden voice of yours has been amazing me for a lifetime. Rest in peace John Prine. You were one of a kind.
I remember a story in"Rolling Stone" where he talked about people calling him the "new Dylan;" I love Dylan's music, he belongs on America's musical Mount Rushmore, but cynicism was his trademark. Prine may be the least cynical person in show business. His humor is unfailingly gentle; empathy is his secret.
He's unfallingly empathetic but I wouldn't call him exactly gentle- "there's a hole in daddy's arm where all the money goes, Jesus Christ died for nothing I suppose" is one of the most devastatingly brutal couplets ever written. And that's exactly the point
From Loudon Wainwright's 'Talking New Bob Dylan' song, with labels looking for guys to fill in for Bob, who had broken his neck... ... And the labels were signin' up guys with guitars Out to make millions, lookin' for stars Yeah, I got a deal and so did John Prine Steve Forbert and Springsteen, all in a line They were lookin' for you, signin' up others We were new Bob Dylans, your dumb-ass kid brothers... Well, we still get together every week at Bruce's house . Why, he's got quite a spread I tell ya. It's a twelve step program...
I’m a huge Dylan fan and I never really thought of the comparison this way before, but I think you’re absolutely right. Kind of gets to the heart of each man’s unique appeal.
Thank you Joan. What a lovely song & tribute. I have wonderful memories of two concerts I was fortunate to see. What a musical genius. I'm praying for your recovery John and Fiona.
John got the idea to write this song while setting inside a mailbox as a letter carrier while eating his lunch to stay out of the blowing snow. His feet were the only thing you could see sticking out of the front of the mailbox. An elderly woman walked by, leaned over and said "hello in there". True story. I'm a retired Postal employee and this was well known in our ranks. Be well John.
What a Nice thing to do..... I my self play one of his songs in my band..... Speed of the sound of...... Like this virus, it’s faster then the speed of..... God Bless USA, and Thanks for ALL YOUR WONDERFUL MUSIC!!!!!!!! Ole from Norway 🇳🇴🇳🇴🇳🇴
You have brightened many dark, exceedingly Arctic nights for me at our Cloudberry Cabin in remote South Central Alaska. Thank you, and God speed John Prine.
Sad to hear about Mr Prine's struggle. I'm 67 and haven't listened to his stuff for a long time. Guess I'll give it a listen. I was an emergency department RN for 30 years and saw many, of all ages, "pass on". For some reason had special place in my heart for the elderly and forgotten. Say hello to them there really is someone in there. They have a story to tell. Be nice to somebody. We can't survive alone.
Beautiful song as well as, her voice, kindness and friendship is pure as gold. May God help everyone who is now fighting against covid19 for their life.
Yah you are right. but I am tibetan Buddhist and we believe world in not creation of God rather by law of causality (cause and effect). Not only the world but every thing (like our psychology- mental health, physical- behaviour, actions), the disease too are created by chains of ( cause and effect). But here is the catch Nothing is permanent (our joy or suffers). And every end of something is beginning of something new. And we all are trapped in this loops or the circle. Yet I believe regardless of our religious difference, if we continue to improve our compassion to others, forgiveness, and unconstitutional love-help towards others with true heart will brings happiness. I think all religions believe equally and give important to these element. But sad think is that now in world SPL many youth are seems very naive and ignorant. I first heard this song on s Saturday night in 1979 and was moved by the thought of it. The following morning I was walking over to the convenient mart to get a Sunday paper and chanced to pass by an elderly man on his way back. Remembering the song I looked right at him and said hello. He lifted his head and I could see the gratitude in his eyes for being noticed. We had a moment there and I've never forgotten that experience, and every time I hear this song I remember it.
I'm stunned and saddened by this news. Thanks so much for posting this-I'd not have known. Beautiful tribute to a dear musical companion and inspiration.

Of all the great John Prine songs, the majestic "Sam Stone" has had the most impact on me. I was a teenager in the 1970's, and the realization of the Vietnam War was heartbreaking then, and still is now. Sincere and heartfelt wishes for John Prine. Planet Earth so needs his masterpieces, on and on.

I went to the "open mike" night once in Big Sur at the Henry Miller house about 2009, magical evening, stars out, a little roach passed around w chocolate chip cookies, and the third or fourth performer--all amateur locals out for a free mini concert--played "Spanish Pipedream." He couldn't have been 24 years old, but he had discovered John Prine from 40 years earlier. Did my heart good, and a big, sh*t eating grin came upon my face...Angel from Montgomery will also live forever. Thanks, Joan!
Young people in the US could learn so much from you Joan, and from John.

Lynda Appino wow! Just a regular guy. Humility is a beautiful thing.
That's so wonderful. Thank you for sharing that. And for being buddies with John Prine.
Wonderful, thank you for playing for us. 🙏🌎✌
Praying for you recovery Mr. John Prine. I love the story of when you were a postman in cold Chicago and used to climb in mailboxes and write songs. Your take on life is like no one else's. A true original.
My favorite John Prine song. Thanks Joan. Best wishes.
A beautiful message to a friend.
Exactly
What a wonderful tribute from one legend to another. I'll keep John and you in my heart. They don't make a lot of great artists like you guys anymore. Peace be with you.
I am 69 years old, live in South Africa, we are currently in lock down here, Mr Prime is one of my favorite singer song writers, we pray for you Fiona.
I first learned about John Prine over 20 years ago, when I asked my my mom what she wanted for Christmas. She said a John Prine cd. I went to the record store and bought his Anthology album. I listened to that over and over and over.
Is this the David Barr I know from Portland ?
@@Katie-ck6yp nope
Ah man..... I was hopeful this was gonna be one of those "Haven't heard from you in years " story's.... oh well.
David Barr, my mom LOVED John Prine, almost since he started singing, and she had a few of his albums, which I now have.
From Wanda.
You're comment is beautiful and heartfelt. 💖🙋♀️
@Tommy Sweetweather You don't know this woman or what she has done in her life, obviously. Why can't people be thankful for what they have and stop always looking at the other guy and what they have?
@Barb Smart from Wanda Terrific story, what the great California writer\teacher\performer Al Young named the genre of his first three books of recalled formative snippets of his life associated with a particular song or piece of music, namely MUSICAL MEMOIRS. Yours come all the way from your lovely down under lockdown Pacific isles way way off the coast of Oregon. Your reply to bethstyleshair and then your sign-off "From Wanda" begs the question asked in good faith: "Wanda? Tinasky I presume..."
Warmly wishing you & your whole community,

@Tommy Sweetweather Ish. Troll. I know the family and believe me, you've got it backwards.
I keep coming back to this for comfort. I miss John's music so much. More so, I miss my brother who introduced me to John's music.
Well said, you put that very nicely. John has a lot of heart.
He's unfallingly empathetic but I wouldn't call him exactly gentle- "there's a hole in daddy's arm where all the money goes, Jesus Christ died for nothing I suppose" is one of the most devastatingly brutal couplets ever written. And that's exactly the point
From Loudon Wainwright's 'Talking New Bob Dylan' song, with labels looking for guys to fill in for Bob, who had broken his neck...
... And the labels were signin' up guys with guitars
Out to make millions, lookin' for stars
Yeah, I got a deal and so did John Prine
Steve Forbert and Springsteen, all in a line
They were lookin' for you, signin' up others
We were new Bob Dylans, your dumb-ass kid brothers...
Well, we still get together every week at Bruce's house
. Why, he's got quite a spread I tell ya.
It's a twelve step program...
I’m a huge Dylan fan and I never really thought of the comparison this way before, but I think you’re absolutely right. Kind of gets to the heart of each man’s unique appeal.

Two treasures - John and my all-time favourite Joan . Thanks for the 60s Joan. 💕
this song always moved me and I find myself sitting here, so emotional, crying like a baby. Keep fighting, John. We need you. We love you. So much.
Thank you Joan. What a lovely song & tribute. I have wonderful memories of two concerts I was fortunate to see. What a musical genius. I'm praying for your recovery John and Fiona.
I have never met John but he has been riding around in my truck with me for fifty years, God bless you John.
Cool bit. Thanks
What a Nice thing to do.....
I my self play one of his songs in my band.....
Speed of the sound of......
Like this virus, it’s faster then the speed of.....
God Bless USA, and Thanks for ALL YOUR WONDERFUL MUSIC!!!!!!!!

We need artists like Joan more than ever right now! What a lovely tribute to John Prine (RIP)
I wish you knew how much I love ❤️ you!
You are the reason I’ve played and sang for fifty years!! God bless you!
I am guy wrenched about MR. Prine
Joan, you and John are sublime gifts to American culture. You help bring out the best in us!
I was 24 when I first heard this song. I am 70 years old today. Just imagine
So nice a tribute to John and Fiona that we can join in sending.
You should listen to some of the more recent stuff. Really. It's wonderful.
PLEASE GO LISTEN TO SUMMER'S END, NOW.
SONG OF THE YEAR AWARD LAST YEAR.
Sat and cried listening to this. Thanks Joan. God bless you John
Beautiful song as well as, her voice, kindness and friendship is pure as gold. May God help everyone who is now fighting against covid19 for their life.
I feel like we are all fighting for our lives whether virus or not. It is such a sick world right now. Love and kindness to all!
If "God" could help, why create the virus in the first place? Never crossed your mind, did it?
They lots in fantasy world , complete derailed from the reality. There are some RUclipsrs what they doing is offering many or food to homeless person and asking audiences to hit like button. some RUclipsrs are offering new iPhone or cash as random act of kindness only for hit more like button and to subscribe the channel I found distasteful. Many people. Other did serious crime for short term happiness (money in most cases). So many are out their.
Penpa Dhundup I agree with you, Penpa. Please tell me what SPL is - that doesn’t mean anything to me. Thank you. Maggie

Dear Maggie
SPL is nothing it is just short form of word (specially). Actually I was criticising today's youth specially for been naive. My English is not good sorry for the inconvenience. Have good day and Stay healthy and be save. Thank you, love and peace.

Best wishes for John and his wife. I discovered his first album when I was in college in the 70s. I still listen to it.
So nice. Beautiful song, beautifully sang.
God Bless him.., this is ripping my heart out ... God Bless you
I'm stunned and saddened by this news. Thanks so much for posting this-I'd not have known. Beautiful tribute to a dear musical companion and inspiration.
It had to be said again. Thank you Joan for your beautiful cover of Hello In There. Thank both of you for being there when we needed you. Well said by Russ Jones.
Coming from the folk days and seeing him in Chicago good memories. Less than 2% of those who contract die. So John has a strong constitution and a lot of people praying and rooting for his recovery and thanks for all the great songs and thoughts.
My heart is broken by the loss of John Prine and his beautiful spirit and soul. Thank you Joan for helping with the healing.
We lost an American Legend in John Prine. Thank you miss Bonnie for the beautiful rendition of his song "Hello In There".
Prayers lifted up for both John and his wife. I have held John's music close to my heart for a long long time. I was listening to 3 of his albums last night as I fell asleep. Such lovely and awe-inspiring talent. We need you to heal John!
Saw John sing this song on tv one time. He introduced it as the favorite song he ever wrote. I have to agree.
What an AWESOME, Tribute!!! 🎵🎶🎸🎵🎶...🙏
Wow, still beautiful, talented and kind. Thank you, Joan, and all my best to our beloved John.
Thanks for sharing this Joan.
I've been listening to John for over 40 year's and you
a little over 50.
There isn't a day that goes bye that "Angel from Montgomery" doesn't slip from my lips or your album's make another circle around the turntable
I can't begin to express how much your lyrics have meant in my life.
Just know they have been the soundtrack for much of it.
These are trying times be well my friend.
We are all praying for you John.

Came home from the war a broken and changed man. John gave me meaning and purpose. Old People brought me back to what is important. God bless you John get well
One national treasure singing a masterpiece for another national treasure, and my heart is breaking and reforming, breaking and reforming. It's a strange world that needs our love. John tried to tell us, but not enough of us listened.
This is a beautiful song, and a wonderful message to John. Please God - don't take John from us yet. I hope he and his Wife can beat this thing. Wonderful performance. Thank you for doing it.
Thank you for remembering your friend today and singing him one of his beautiful songs. As a writer who pales in his presence, I love his manner of speaking to us through his songs. I am praying him and his loved ones who may also be affected by this horrid virus, to recover quickly.
Saw Mr. Prine at at a benefit concert In Nashville several years ago with Jason Isabel. Such wisdom and a true story teller. Was magical! Prayers for John and his wife.
One of very best singer song writer for all time praying for him and many that love him thanks for sharing
This was a little before my time but has become one of my all time favorite songs. Thank you for doing this.
God bless John Prine.
Tears to my eyes this morning. Hoping we could postpone his trip to Muhlenberg County for awhile.
Started to listen to John P in the 1970’s. I was amazed how many songs dealt with the old and forgotten. Flash forward to today. I am now the one with hollow vacant eyes. Thank you John and God Bless you and your wife🙏❤️
Devastated to hear the news. John is in our prayers for as long as it takes. Fighting back the tears. Mike & Pam in the UK
Dear Lord, please spare JP so that he can live to continue touching the lives of others with his songs and their messages of love, trust, and hope. I first saw JP at the Philly Folk Festival in the mid 1970s. Now our 20+ kids are also JP fans.
When this video came up on my RUclips home page, I thought: This woman sure is channeling Joan Baez. Well, I guess so! The news about John Prine came as a shock yesterday. Sending out all very best wishes for his recovery.
Thats a joke right, channeling?
It is Joan Baez!!! Always has been.
Looks like that went over a few people's head!
I thought it was Joan Baez but I wasn’t sure...not used to the gray version. I went scrolling through the comments to verify my suspicions
Thank You Joan, I Have always enjoyed you singing Hello in There; At 76 and enjoying you since I bought your first album; Blessings for All,
Of all the great John Prine songs, the majestic "Sam Stone" has had the most impact on me. I was a teenager in the 1970's, and the realization of the Vietnam War was heartbreaking then, and still is now. Sincere and heartfelt wishes for John Prine. Planet Earth so needs his masterpieces, on and on.
Merci beaucoup Madame Joan Baez ! John is an outstanding songwriter ! Love from France to you'll !
At a time when it isn’t hard to cry ... but you try not to, as a bloke .. this cracked me
But thanks and best wishes
Took my teenage son to a small venue John Prine concert (with Nancy Griffith)...he is still a fan. Thirty years later we are still listening! Hang in their John, Fiona, and thank you Joan Baez! You’re a beautiful person and so kind to help us through these hard times.
Guy Clark, Townes Van Zandt, John Prince, we have lost some of the legends.
.... and we don't get new ones.
Beautiful tribute thank you ❤️
Let’s hope he pulls through 🙏
I went to the "open mike" night once in Big Sur at the Henry Miller house about 2009, magical evening, stars out, a little roach passed around w chocolate chip cookies, and the third or fourth performer--all amateur locals out for a free mini concert--played "Spanish Pipedream." He couldn't have been 24 years old, but he had discovered John Prine from 40 years earlier. Did my heart good, and a big, sh*t eating grin came upon my face...Angel from Montgomery will also live forever. Thanks, Joan!
Heard a young kid playing Sam Stone at an open mic night he was no more than 20 needless to say it did my heart good
Yeah, "Angel from Montgomery" will live forever
Joan many thanks for a fitting tribute to a powerful writer and sensitive, clever man and musician. I friggin' miss him!!!
