I have been around guitars in 1965, and this is NOT being taught to new players. This is also a great refresher course for old guys like me. Thank you so much for putting this together. This is an “Outstanding “ lesson. 🙏
There is no lesson more important than this very one. Not just for guitar, or rhythm, or strumming. ESPECIALLY for grooving to a rhythm with LEAD play. ANYBODY who picks up ANY musical instrument, THIS should be their very first lesson. For so many reasons. Thank you my friend. You’re doing Gods work brother.
Sometimes it just takes a good teacher to point out something so simple, and so evident to make you have an a-ha moment. Years I been playing and in the first 7 minutes, my strumming actually sounds like something nice. Thank you!
I'm a 77 year old, wanna be rock star!😂and found your tutorial to be the best I've seen so far on RUclips. I'm useless with a plectrum and found your method to be the best yet. Thank you so much Matt, and all the best with your channel.👍

Hi, I am useless with a plectrum as well. I can only use my fingers and have done since I started when I was sixteen. I know I'm am terrible with strumming. Great video Thanks
I have been playing guitar for over 15 years now - self taught and musically inclined. This video is great! The bit about releasing pressure so you don’t actually have to take your fingers off the strings is a game changer. All these years, how did I not know that?! Great lesson, thanks so much!
Thanks ..!! Been trying to learn guitar 20 yrs ..lol strumming was huge issue !!big hands with one inch fingers doesn't help either...lol..made a huge improvement in 20 mins... Cheers
I found this video by accident and it really crystallised something going on in my head in that when I strum I really have no idea what I’m doing and unless I really know the song it can easily sound nothing like what it is supposed to sound like. I especially don’t know when to change cord within whatever strumming pattern I am playing. This video is inspiring and gives me an idea of what to address - so thanks and I will look up more of your videos.
Been playing for many many years ( in my own space). I will never put down my original strumming style. Don't get me wrong, I have tried learning standard strumming patterns and never really got anywhere. At 2:16 of your video I instantly knew that this was the one . Thanks for taking your precious time, FREELY, to enlighten others. Your style of teaching suits my style of acquiring knowledge. Thanks again and keep rocking!!
Hi I'm 55 just started to learn acoustic guitar and got myself a piano/ keyboard never played or got any music knowledge just fancied trying it love your video tutorial 5***** rating from Marcus from England UK 🇬🇧
Your guitar sounds so pleasant and i love how theres a design look inside instead of plain wood ,unfinished look.. nice work. I will have to watch it 100x . Do you have a training videos on simple christian songs like, Here i am to worship? Showing the chord diagrams in upper corner? Thank You!!!!!
I have zero experience with christian songs, but I believe if you are learning the chords and you can find the songs online somewhere with the chords, you will be able to play them easily. Good luck! I'm always available to break down specific songs for you if you wanted to book a zoom lesson anytime. Just send me a message and we can sort something out.
Can't wait to practice later today. I'm not musically inclined and the only way I learn is by having it explained and given examples. Definitely gonna subscribe
Really excellent strumming lesson. Also your note about the beat on the down strum makes a ton of sense and not many teachers mention that, or very often at least. You got a new subscriber!
RUclips send your video to me. Boy, I have never watch a 20-minutes video entirely before this. You are a great and resourceful teacher and I really appreciate the sharing of your knowledge. ♥From Canada.
Thank you very much for your time and help on furthering peoples journey on learning guitar,i really appreciate your concern, you have added value to my learning experience, thank you!
Thanks for the info and your time to explain thoroughly. I agree 100% when you said the Rhythm is more important than the Strumming Pattern 💪🏼 I’m at the intermediate level on acoustic guitar and not quite at that level yet on the electric guitar. I know everyone learns in their own way but for me I find it easier to NOT think about Up/Downs but rather just know the Chords and Progressions and then just Feel and Hear my way through those Chords and Progressions along with the Timing and just play and Enjoy. Again, my opinion, if I were to have taken the approach of mainly focusing in on Up/Downs then I probably would not even be playing the Guitar. I will say that I play the Drum Kit too so I’m sure that helps with my natural GOD given talents of playing and learning by feel and hearing. Hope that helps someone. Thanks
Been playing a strat (badly) for a while and just picked up a Yamaha semi-acoustic to practice and improve my strumming - thanks so much for creating and sharing this - great explanations, but also great references to songs we all know, each with different things to learn from. Thank you :-)
Amazing video, especially when most of my conversations on playing, are that I don't use the correct strum pattern, I just feel the beat. Really love the part about using strum patterns on your leg when you can. Great video and great way to give newbies like myself confidence. thank you very much for sharing this. Subscribing.
Thank you very much!!! I've been playing guitar for years (I'm already 70) and I always struggle with the rhythm. You have a great ability to simplify and clarify certain concepts. I understand everything you explain and I understood it before watching your video but you explain it in a way that makes me internalize it better. Thank you so much!!! Any ideas on how to internalise the rhythm better?
Thank you! I would suggest start counting or verbalising the best of any music you listen to anywhere. A really powerful thing is to physically move some part of your body in any way at all to mark or signify that beat. After a while it will become ingrained in you.
@@OneChartguitarlessons Thank you very much for your reply. I will follow your instructions with enthusiasm and hope to succeed. I always follow the rhythm with my foot, the pulse is not a problem and I can feel well where I am in the measure if I count 1, 2, 3, 4 etc. But it is very difficult for me to count and play at the same time, especially if the rhythm is complicated or if I try to play a melody, and much more difficult if I try to improvise, it is in these cases that I get lost.
I've never learned so much about guitar in such a short amount of time. This is an awesome lesson, thank you for sharing this. You also have a very good teaching method, you are really good at teaching. Thanks, subscribed and liked. Well spent 20 minutes!
Thanks, have been playing the harp for years by feel. To accompany others started learning strum & pick theory with a uke - struggling but you're video helps a lot.

This was very helpful, I'm pretty darn new at picking on my guitar. I've taught myself some notes and chords. But the strumming was just not sounding good. Thank you
🎼 well hi 👋 Iv'e been fumbling with guitar 🎸 for to long to tell......🫣. Seen this and subbed straight away. Excellent video mate , I mean just great 👍👍 Thank you & Greetings from Scotland 🏴.
Great lesson, just subscribed, funny fact Justin Sandercoe ( justin guitar) Dave Tra cole Clark user (Guitar zero to hero) my top 2 go to for lessons are Aussies, and now you too. Love it
It's really just a matter of tempo. If it's too fast to fit the 16ths in there, call it 8ths. there's no real rule there. The idea is to make it easier and more natural for you. It you make it 8ths and you feel there are some strums in the rhythm that you're missing, that you hear "between" the 8th notes, then it's probably 16ths. I often find that listening for the snare drum helps, as there is usually 2 snare drum beats in each bar - does that make sense?
@@OneChartguitarlessons Thank you for taking the time out to respond. I watched your video a few times before I asked my question just in case I was missing something. This piece of advice was what I needed because I found myself speeding my strumming up so I could try and sing along. Didn't know if I was breaking the rules or performing bad practice. "Reggae rock" has more intricacies then one might think, so that's what led me here. Couldn't sing along to what I was playing for the life of me. Thank you so much for helping me on this journey. Much success to you!!!!
Ah that’s awesome to hear, Kaley! Thank you so much for letting me know. That was the whole intention of the lesson so I’m so glad it worked for you! Welcome to the world of natural rhythm! 😁
Only been playing since April, but I'm throwing this into the mix. Why do we strum with our right hand (speaking of right-handers) and do all the intricate fingerwork with our left hand? One would think it'd be the opposite. I don't draw or write or even open a jar with my left hand. The explanation I was given was simple: rhythm. A righthander attempting to throw with their left hand understands immediately. Rhythm --- for right-handers --- is in your right hand. When he says, "Just keep the rhythm, it should be natural", you find that in your right hand. And it makes ya sound better. Cool.
Great and comprehensive tutorial. Thank you ! I’m only missing one thing: can you also explain how and with which fingers you strum the strings during both the up- and downstrokes ? I also noticed you you rest your thumb on the 6th string a lot of times when executing a downstroke.
You are spot on! Exactly right. I will do a follow up video and explain those things in the next couple of weeks! Thanks for the feedback and the questions, it’s much appreciated.
Thanks for explaining. It is really clear! And helpful. However I’m a bit surprised by the technique with the use of the fingers instead of the thumb with one finger for strumming. I really have to work on getting the coordination with the fingers in order first to be alle to this technique!
If you can use both thumb and fingers independently it opens up a whole new world of possibilities for rhythms, because they move in opposing directions.
Mate I have been teaching myself to play guitar off you tube since leaving my job 5 1/2 years ago as a 59 year old total novice. I was always unco at strumming but just concentrated on trying to make clean chord sounds after learning what they were and how to make them so everything didn't always sound terrible. I said to myself that strumming will come eventually just do what you can and it will develop over time which it has. But those down up videos would drive me nuts. How are you supposed to remember all those strokes for every song? This is the first time I've been able to get something useful in such a short time after years of surfing and be able to remember and apply it practically. I always struggled with that PF wall strum😮. But the muted strum, long follow through and open string strum change ups, along with the 4, 8 and 16 timing and hand position were brilliant for my level 😮❤. It just all made sense for me right now and will help advance my progress going forward. Gidday mate from a grateful Kiwi across the ditch 😊! Chur.
