How To Sound Better Strumming Guitar - Forget Patterns!

- In this video, I am going to show you how to sound better strumming guitar. Strumming patterns are not the answer. If you want to sound good strumming guitar, don’t focus on patterns, rather focus on the sound you are getting instead.
In this lesson, I show you 3 ways you can achieve a better guitar strumming sound.
- Guitar Strumming Approach 1: Dynamics
When strumming guitar, you do not strum all the strings, all the time. This makes for a very bland and flat strumming sound with absolutely no dynamic to it. You must accent certain parts of the beat by targeting different strings when strumming.
- Guitar Strumming Approach 2: Palm Muting
You will learn how to use palm muting to create nice dynamics with your strumming. Like targeting strings, this allows certain beats to be accented, bringing much shape to your strumming.
- Guitar Strumming Approach 3: Percussive Strums
You will also learn how to bring a groove to your strumming with the percussive strumming technique. This is achieved with percussive hits on beats 2 and 4 of each bar as you strum.
In this video, I show you how to do all this.

THANK YOU SO MUCH!! I HATE strumming patterns and never in my life want to play DDU UDU again. Just within 10 minutes of watching your video, I apply the techniques and finally feel like my strumming is singing!!
astro6393, you are so welcome :) This is great to hear!
How does this channel only have 15.2K subscribers? Must be the most underrated channel on RUclips! Awesome work, maestro! Thank you.
@zonkkk very kind of you to say! :)
You are SO correct, zonkkk.
Excellent video! Thank you so much!
Thank you so much for this video!!! I couldn’t stand to hear myself playing my guitar and sounding like a robot strumming!!! I was about to give up..😢 But you saved a guitar player with this video, thank you so much!🙏🏻☺️
@VeleiroBarbaNegra, you are very welcome! I am glad my video has helped you :)
This is the lesson I have been looking for since I started playing. My strumming didn't sound the way I wanted it to, but I couldn't figure out why. Learning new strumming patterns didn't help -- it was the same playing but with different patterns. It was everything you go over here. Thanks for the lesson.
@JeffCole, you are very welcome! Glad this lesson has helped you with your strumming :)
This is a great lesson for a beginner to get a look forward to how he’s going to get to that place he wants to be down the road. A map; a confidence builder. Of course, nobody could do all this 10 minutes after watching this lesson, but I think it would calm a lot a beginners down to see this and understand the pathway that lies in front of them.
@NMranchhand, glad you liked the lesson, and you make some great points :)
Please make a video if possible on singing while playing guitar, specifically separating the rhythm of the guitar part from the singing because that really trips me up.
@astro6393 , already have :)

Good lesson encapsulating some of the techniques to improve strumming. I have been exposed to these from other videos but nice to have several techniques in one place. Also good close up and explanation of the percussive slap technique which will help me improve!
Glad you found the lesson useful Tim B :)

Thank you so much sir. Learned alot ❤😊
@akila9616, you are welcome! :)
I love it
@RonaAbalan1972 , glad you liked it :)
Great lesson, Simon! I'd almost given up on becoming competent at pick strumming. Turns out the muting and the percussion makes my picking sound tolerable . . .
@happyguycmb2883, glad you found the lesson helpful for your playing :)
I find that most RUclips guitar song tutorials include a suggested strum pattern. Maybe it’s easier for the teacher to get you going and get through the lesson. But I never really feel like I am in the rhythm of the song following these patterns. Your method of developing feel for the rhythm is very useful and will encourage us to play more freely with the beat and melody. Your approach is much more useful in developing song rhythm. You have been very helpful. Thank you.
@bm3823, you are very welcome! :)
Yes, strum patterns are nothing more than a guide.
They are a useful tool for training students to strum with correct and efficient technique. But the vast majority of strumming out there is far too nuanced to little down to a single bar repeating pattern. I am glad y video has helped you and I appreciate you dropping by to say so :)
Sir, it would be of much help if you elaborate the first one ( pattern/dynamic)
Hi Ritu :) In what way would you like me to elaborate on it? The point is to target strings when strumming to create dynamics, not the pattern itself :)
Hi. Tried to access your free mini strumming course by entering my name, email and clicking th button. Had asyncform error. Can you help. Oh, really liked your initial strumming technique video. Thanks Barry
@bjm2762, glad you liked the video :)
Everything is working on my end regarding the Minicourse. Are you able to tell me which browser you are using so I can try and replicate the issue and sort it for you.
In don't know why, but when i strum and sing at the same time and record it my mobile phone.... In recording guitar noises means just sting of guitar voice why is it?(i dont have any buzzing problem while strumming
Do you mean you have a buzzing problem when singing AND strumming together but not when only strumming?
👌👌👌👍👍👍👏👏👏👏👏👏🙂🙂🙂
Glad you like the video Yannick! :)
That thumb nail is distracting
@gerrykrupp4418, ha ha, I need it for fingerpicking :)
I know - I’ve several friends with them too!
bored !!!!
