It’s a bit of a shame the crowd laughed when he said he went back to school. He should’ve been applauded.

That’s the problem with some of these old late show episodes… The audience tended to always think everything was a joke. Some moments are pretty cringy now because of that.

I saw it as because he was making so much money, he'd never counted so high. I think it was a bit tongue in cheek.
Laughter doesn't automatically translate to ridicule. I laughed too at the irony of it all and because I was engaged in his story. And he was being funny. He said he was making piles of money, he'd better learn how to count it.
He didn't say anything funny. He was just being himself. RIP Richard

You can't watch this and NOT feel respect for such an artist who's not only musically gifted, by confident, funny, and TRULY his own character.

I have to agree Little Richard was the innovator and trailblazer for Rock and Roll along with Chuck Berry and many others who helped lay the foundation for Modern Music
This crowd didn't understand him, like they didn't take him seriously. This is an amazing interview. He has many layers to himself, and he's very honest.

I waved to him one night as he was coming down the elevator at the Nashville Hilton, where he lived. To our surprise, he came down and headed right towards my small group. He hung out with us for twenty minutes and was as friendly as he is here. A few years later, I saw him again as his security was helping him into his car. His health had declined quite a bit. He smiled and waved. He remembered. What a cool guy.
That's awesome. I love when "celebrities" just act normal like that. Very cool that he did that. ❤❤

I think the only reason they laughed is because obviously the platform and show is a comedy based program, but deep inside all those laughs you could hear heartfelt appreciation for him.

Little Richard was face value. He showed you and told you rather you liked it or not. He told and showed his truth. Because he was so honest, people thought he was crazy.
Nearly EVERYTHING he said in this one interview about the music industry is now FINALLY coming to light in 2023. It's sad and unfortunate that people don't give you flowers and acknowledge your worth until after death.😢

This man is amazing. He talks about his life and then casually picks up a mic and belts out an amazing performance. I don't know this song but he sang it so well.
The crowd laughing at times upset me. He was amazing as a rock in roll pioneer. I loved that he went to school to study and learn to read and right. That's not funny it's important. This man was amazing and yes he started rock in roll. So what if he wore makeup and was gay. So what if he was flamboyant etc that was who he was. I mean a lot of legends were gay nobody cared. I just loved this man. He was talented, funny, beautiful and talented beyond words. We will never forget Richard.
So much respect for this guy, with all the hurdles he had to overcome, being a black gay guy in Macon, Georgia, in the 1950s, and to still be so upbeat and grateful is really humbling.
Black people were the most homophobic people in America until identity politics came along, and ‘ protected groups’, you can read examples of this repulsive entitlement in the comments left here by black American women.
The audience was all idiots. Richard was way ahead of his time. Bless his heart!❤

Right and those saying he made a joke are absolutely TONE DEAF nothing about it was joking at that moment… he actually dismissed the laughter and continued to make his point. I saw him in concert a few years before he passed and he told us that he was never given any award despite how much he contributed to the music industry. He sounded heartbroken about it. After the show I saw him get into his car and I said, I love you Little Richard and he responded with I love you too! 🥰

He earned awards. They should have given the legends awards and not people like Beyoncé all the time. I don’t remember any awards show giving him tributes or anything, maybe a few did, but nothing that stands out to me.

Relax, they were laughing because he said, in a funny way, "I had so much money but didn't know how to count it! So I went back to school". He knew the reaction that he was going to receive before he said it. The man is a master performer and he plays the audience like piano.
His version of “One Day At a Time” is so country 😍 I love the boundless crossover between music genres. So much soul and sweetness and style 🤤 so good.

The audiences laughter kind of lets you know the challenges of the era for people like Richard.
LOL.. Richard was on top of the world in 1982. A legend. There were less challenges of the era for him than most as a consequence. He'd made it big long before this interview.
The studio audience or maybe canned response. Might have had someone holding a sign to tell a live audience to laugh or applaud. They should not have laughed at him. Clearly a musical genius way ahead of the times.

Richard Penniman was totally unique and no-one was bigger and more contributing to rock ‘n roll than he . We got to know each other in the 60’s and 70’s . Great and fun guy ! Bless and long live Littlle Richard ! Stu Kurland
Little Richard was so innovative and impactful and the crowd basically laughed him off like a joke. He probably dealt with that all his life, including growing up and in his family and music and creativity became his outlet for dealing with it, and this eccentric, brilliant personality emerged. Like why would people laugh at him going back to school? He was probably traumatized by people not taking him seriously. He will be a legend forever though.
Were folks in the audience laughing at him? It seemed that Mr. Richard had delighted the audience through the entire interview. ...but maybe I'm projecting my reaction on the audience. 🙂

This was a deep interview. The laughter tries to throw you off but little Richard is a true pioneer. He went through a lot and came back to the Lord. His testimony is powerful.
The laughter didn't bother me. It seemed gentle and mostly in a "laughing with him" spirit.

This is the most honest and the best interview I have ever seen a person do, although the audience wasn't understanding, laughing at the fact he continued his education, nobody is perfect, he took ownership of the things he done, much respect for him, may he rest in paradise.
He also became very successful in spite of having a very poor education as a child. Even in his time that was rare. Very impressive.

Artistic genius Little Richard knew that most of the world could not understand him. He later played at Long Beach Pride Festival, and few people appreciated the momentous occasion. I very much appreciated it.

Little Richard has always received credit. He's been in the Rock and Roll HOF since 1986 and was a first ballot inductee. He made a living off his music in the 50s and The Beatles gave him props more than once in the 60s and the picture of them with one of their heroes was all over magazines. Some folks just like to complain.
RIP Little Richard the Architect of Rock and Roll. I thought the audience were rude laughing while he told his story, but he persevered and was unbothered. Determined to help someone that may have needed to hear that it’s ok to change your life with Christ.

He went to church every Sunday until he moved back to Georgia. I missed him after he left.
I think they thought he was joking, because the lil Richard who wore makeup and wigs joked a lot but kept a straight face while the audience always laughed as they did here, the only difference then, is sometimes he would say, SHUT UP! I think he was joking but telling the truth at the same time when the audience was laughing.
They were not being rude. Everybody knows you can't change your sexuality. The baptist church in the 80s was not welcoming to their gay brothers and sisters in Christ and forced them to deny their relationships to join their community. I respect the man for making such a sacrifice but I don't respect the church becuase it was not a sacrifice for them, rather it was the opposite. It was a sinful indulgence of their bigotry and ignorance.

I love Little Richard. He was so authentic and he owned his experiences and didn't try to be anything other than what he was. His talent was amazing.
I remember going to the Gospel revival meetings where he evangelized in the community. He was a humble and wonderful person.
He did influence the Beatles and many others who went on to become huge rock stars. We're all so used to outlandish behavior and claims by him that it's difficult to take him seriously, but he seems to be serious here and he certainly deserves credit for helping to found and influence everything related to rock music.

Well. He said they started with him. If that is true and can probably still be verified, then, that should be enough said for anyone.
Paul sang, "Clara Bella". It was the raunchiest song he ever sang, and he admitted that he was often impersonating Little Richard.
Tina Turner also influenced a lot of white rock and roll artists (ie Mick Jagger) as well. Many black artists were the ones to make good music first…the blues came before rock and roll.
Richard was honored by many institutions. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as part of its first group of inductees in 1986. He was also inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. He was the recipient of Lifetime Achievement Awards from The Recording Academy and the Rhythm and Blues Foundation. In 2015, Richard received a Rhapsody & Rhythm Award from the National Museum of African American Music for his key role in the formation of popular music genres and helping to bring an end to the racial divide on the music charts and in concert in the mid-1950s changing American culture significantly. "Tutti Frutti" was included in the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress in 2010, which stated that his "unique vocalizing over the irresistible beat announced a new era in music".

I was listening to his first album the other day, and the sheer power of his voice is unreal for that time period. You can hear the roots of hard rock, metal, and punk decades before they existed.
It's such a shame that even a man as talented and good-hearted as Little Richard couldn't have lived as his true self.
This, indeed, was a man who found PERFECT PEACE before his end came. RIP, BIG Little Richard.

I went to a carismatic Catholic Church in NYC back in 1980's. I was stationed in Staton Island temporarily while in the Navy. I couldn't believe my eyes when Little Richard walked up to the front and began preaching! I was probably 19 years old and a young believer in Christ. Over the years I've told people about it and the gave me that, sure ya did, kinda look! Seeing this is reassuring... to me! 😊 As time goes by the memories fade, but this one came back like it was yesterday. God is good, all the time!

I love how serious he kept going when they laughed about why he needed to go back to school and how he used his money to better himself. What an inspiration. He wad very much Rock and Roll, the innovator and initiator. Still very much loved and respected. ❤

I met him in person at a concert he held in St Augustine. I loved it because it was a good mixture of old and young. I had a ball and he gave an explosive concert in a wheel chair. He told everyone he was not gay anymore and he even had 2 sons that were apart of his band one played the sax and the other bass. When I tell you super talented. The whole audience was shocked. I went back stage to meet him and his family and he signed a poster for me. He also gave me a book he had written. Super nice guy and one of the best concerts I've gone too.

Honestly when people say they are not gay anymore I’m pretty sure they were bisexual in denial… I’m a gay man and tried my best to change my sexuality but it’s impossible for someone like me. I even grew up in a religious background, had super religious parents and on top of that my parents would only let me hang out with my church friends who were all of course straight or at least some that I know of.. (who knows some of them could be closeted 🤷🏻♂️)
And I would always envied those who say they were gay but changed to straight because honestly life would be so much easier for me if I was a straight man.. But throughout the years I’ve come to a conclusion and learned to accept and love who I am because I KNOW that I am born this way.
That’s why when someone says they were gay but turned themselves straight, doesn’t make any sense to me because if they were “gay” then what are people like me?
I’m pretty sure they were bisexual in denial for all I know. People need to stop calling them gay and making us look like we can change because that is not true at all.

I don’t think people realise how much of a genius Richard Penniman was. That man had a memory and gift for face recognition, recalling people’s personal stories that was off the chart. People he met years earlier were always amazed at how he recognised them their names and whatever chat they had straight off the bat. When you consider how many thousands of people this superstar legend of Rock n Roll must’ve met it’s quite remarkable how he can recall so easily and accurately.

Little Richard could have easily been a comedian, he’s was effortlessly funny.
In 1977 I watched little Richard give his testimony at a church in Phoenix Arizona. He was taking heavy doses of heroin in the 60’s and said that he did not know whether he was a man or a woman because of the heavy drug use. I believe him. I understand what it’s like to be demoralized by opiates. To lose your identity and who you are as a man or woman is a sacred thing. I really respect this man he has given it his all.

This man was my moms first real heart throb. Mind you she grew up in Tennessee when there were still white and black water fountains. He is THEE most underrated musician of all time.
He's not underrated at all. Innumerable other musicians cite his as an influence, praise him, and he's won numerous awards and honors, such as being among the first to be inducted in the rock and roll hall of fame.

Little Richard's legacy is alive and well. Most anyone familiar with the history of music or lived when he was a star knows about him. Granted, the former criteria does not make up a lot of people, but that's true of the history of pretty much everything. The giant lake that is the knowledge of what came before is there, but most prefer not to drink from it much, sadly.

The crowd thought he was joking about going back to school. In an odd way, the crowd laughing is a compliment because of how he carries himself here - meaning they couldn't imagine him being serious about not knowing how to read and count. Their perception of him made them think he was joking. Remarkable talent, remarkable bravery to say he changed his way of seeing life. Genuine Christians are some of the best people I've encountered and bad Christians are some of the worst people I've encountered. Amazing how that is...
