I'm 70 yrs old and I just found John Prine. I missed out on listening to him for about 50 yrs so I guess I've got alot of catching up to do or live to 140. I hope I go to heaven and he's there too
I'm 70 yrs old also and have been listening to John Prine for over 50 yrs and I can tell you Andrew you've got a lot of great JP music discovery ahead of you. Enjoy the trip.👍
With ya there buddy.....am , like you, a late discoveree.....very sadly!! ....am on wrong side o 60....and only discovering this great music now......well, hopefully I'll be able to listen to it for a few more years ❤
@@MartinCogavin Welcome to the wonderful world of, Prine, Goodman, Kristofferson, Guthrie and so many others that never got the recognition they deserved.
I just found Steve Goodman and I'm hooked. John Prine has been my favorite all my life. I can't believe Steve was so sick and he had so much energy. He preformed and you would never know he was so sick. He would have been a legend If he.had been able stick around.
Amazing what we learn in this world when we open our eyes...john prine was one of the first to be executed for crimes against humanity...sold his soul from the beginning...sad but fuking true .
I never knew who John Prine was until I heard of his passing. I consider myself very knowledgeable when it comes to music. I have been exploring John's music for the last 4 weeks and I can say that he, without a doubt, has become my most favorite song writer of all time. Such simple song structure with such a powerful message. I'm sad I never got to see you perform John. I hope you are having your vodka and ginger ale next to peaceful waters.
Jayson Eubanks The world of Prine and Goodman is the best the music world has ever put together.... No studio tuning here... and the writing is top notch.... enjoy the tour....
A musical void that may never be filled, sad, yet powerful, sweet, and somehow strong. I used to play Johns songs in bars back in the 70's as a much younger man when not many knew of him. Now, as I approach 70, I feel once again drawn to the truthful lyrics and earthy performances that he blessed us with. Thankful that I got to see him perform live a couple of times. RIP.
I wonder if John Prine ever watched all these vintage videos on RUclips that he may have missed first time around. I'd like to think he did. I saw JP three times in the 2 years before he died, and he always paid tribute to his friend 'Stevie' Goodman. 2 legends. Together again I hope.
I saw John in Pittsburgh in early 2012, he dedicated this song to his brother who he said wasn't doing too well, was in the hospital, they had talked before the show and his brother had asked John to play this for him. John ended the song with tears streaming down his face. THIS MAN IS REAL. Love you John.
There is a sweet, short documentary here somewhere about Steve Goodman, featuring interviews with John Prine, Arlo Guthrie, Kris Kristofferson, Steve's widow, and his manager. Kristofferson has to stop talking at one point, because he starts crying. I was blessed to see Steve perform at the Moore Theater in Seattle in the mid-70s. He played solo for three hours, with one little break. What a treat that was!
Rest in Peace John. I feel like I've lost my best friend having had you as my hero since the age of 16. Turn 60 this month and I Thank You for being such a presence in my life.
I never worked with Steve, but I did work with his brother shortly after he died. We both cried a lot. I miss them both, but they are picking and grinning in heaven
@@hugowiberg1843 Saw Steve Goodman twice, once in a tiny coffeehouse, once in a larger hall. Both times he broke a string mid-song, switched guitars, and picked up right from the note he left.
No telling how many times I have watched this. Such a joy, every time, to watch John and Steve together. I think it is one of the sweetest music videos I have ever seen. God bless you, John Prine.
Absolutely perfect song as I sadly part with all of the baggage left behind by my mother's passing and contemplate my own mortality. Who will want or understand my souvenirs?

They were always absolutely amazing to see live! In Chicago, whoever you were going to see, John or Steve, the other would show up and it was so special. They were best buddies and helped one another, they co-wrote several songs. David Bromberg, look him up, is another who played with them. 🪕🎸🎻🎼🎵 In 1973 my friends were playing their albums, I was a teenager and I have loved their music ever since. Countless shows & hours listening to them are never boring...hit rewind & repeat & enjoy! So blessed to have had that opportunity. I took my 19 year old daughter to see John in 2018...he made her another fan. Love and prayers to the families of JP & SG...may the rest in peace.
"Broken hearts and dirty windows make life difficult to see". The best line in any song. I saw John perform this 30 years ago and swore I would learn to fingerpick it. It's now my favorite song of his to play. I miss him so much.
I saw JP and SG at the Paramount Theater in Austin, TX on March 5 1982, the night John Belushi died. John Prine dedicated "Sam Stone" to his old buddy. Brilliant show. R.I.P. Steve Goodman. He was one of those dudes you could tell was a genuinely nice guy from a mile away.
John Prine has meant so much in our al familie's lives - from 1972-73 until today. We have llistened to all his songs - know the words to his songs, gone to his concerts and have loved him with grateful hearts for all our lives.
Music to comfort the soul. Let's all take a deep breath and hope for leadership and sanity in these perilous times. God bless John Prine and Steve Goodman.
Damn Steve Goodman was an awesome picker and a very humble unselfish human being who took Kristoffesen to see John at the Earl. What a great pal to have that would put you first. Two great American treasures who loved and appreciated each other.

My heart is breaking 💔 We lost a beautiful soul and Jesus gained one. Best singer and songwriter. I followed John since 1973. R.I.P. John you’ll always hold a special place in my heart ♥️🌹
I had the pleasure of seeing John and Steve together at Milwaukee's Summerfest on the Country Stage. Steve told jokes about his leukemia (dude had a dark sense of humor). John made a point (more than one, actually) about the fact that it was Steve that wrote "City of New Orleans". Damn, those two put on the best show. Have a beer for me in the afterlife, guys.
I whole heartedly agree with each comment I've read. I've nothing to add except.. We we're Blessed by them both. RIP Boy's.. Ha! They're tearing it up!
I was blessed to live to hear Bob Dylan, Arlo Guthrie, Steve Goodman, John Prine and Paul Simon. The nucleus of the greatest singer/songwriters ever. There were more, but these were the best ever. They made me laugh, cry, applaud, cheer and, most of all, think. I will be eternally grateful for that.
This was recorded for Austin City Limits and I was priviledged to be in the audience for the taping. Prine and Goodman are two of the best musicians ever! :)
They played together so naturally. True friends, Steve took Kris Kristofferson to hear John. Then John gave Steve solo writing credit on You Never Even Called me by my Name. So Steve bought John a juke box with some of the royalties. Two great songwriters, together again.
Embarrassed to say it, but I just “discovered” John Prine a year ago. Love your story, Michele, because I always felt Steve Goodman was hands down the best songwriter EVER. I love that they were linked as you described, and I have a new idol now.
I'm watching this after just receiving news that John Prine is battling Covid-19. I am sad. I wouldn't put it past Prine to bounce back and give the world another Grammy-award winning album. But if he doesn't, I feel peace that he will join his life-long friend, "Stevie."
I can always go back to this , and feel young and old at the same time. The video is fuzzy but it Still sounds crisp. God bless those boys, now and forever.

Seeing Prine last night in SF>..... it's funny how he patters between songs.... sound less like a legend than he is but more like a guy in the neighborhood who writes little stories about his neighbors and plays guitar doing it.

I "discovered" John Prine by simply listening to the radio-the days when DJ's played what they wanted. But thank goodness I have lived long enough to enjoy RUclips and all the free concerts like this. Steve-you are still loved and missed. (Steve lived with terminal leukemia for 15 yrs and died at 36 yrs.) ☮
I saw them play this at a concert near Washington, DC back in 1981. I never get tired of hearing those guitars. Goodman died a few years later as I recall. Prine is struggling with the coronavirus now. Here's hoping he pulls through and lives a long time.
This and the passing of a friend's brother who lived in Dublin brought reality crashing in to my mostly safe cave. I've been coping by listening to music, but that doesn't keep tragedy away. I've shed many tears. I know there are losses to come, and I have too many friends who will survive -- without a way to make a living. I
@@quinbagwell7515 that’s what said. I would have to be deaf not to recognize that Steve Goodman was a superior instrumentalist. And John himself would say that. But when it come to the eloquence of a twist of a phrase , poetry, humorist and basically the second coming of a Mark Twain, John Prine reigned.
was fortunate enough to see/listen to both Steve G & John P individually and together, College of DuPage way back in the late 70s. Have numerous Goodman albums/songs. Few had more wit and entertained more than Goodman. He was quick with a quip and yet refreshingly modest/humble at the same time. He inspired me to learn how to play a number of his songs. Rest in Peace Steve G knowing you left this world a much better place!

Lyrics
All the snow has turned to water
Christmas days have come and gone
Broken toys and faded colours
Are all that's left to linger on
I hate graveyards and old pawn shops
For they always bring me tears
I can't forgive the way they robbed me
Of my childhood souvenirs
Memories, they can't be boughten
They can't be won at carnivals for free
Well it took me years to get those souvenirs
And I don't know how they slipped away from me
Broken hearts and dirty windows
Make life difficult to see
That's why last night and this morning
Always look the same to me
And I hate reading old love letters
For they always bring me tears
I can't forget the way they robbed me
Of my sweetheart's souvenirs
Memories they can't be boughten
They can't be won at carnivals for free
Well it took me years to get those souvenirs
And I don't know how they slipped away from me

I "discovered" John Prine by simply listening to the radio-the days when DJ's played what they wanted. But thank goodness I have lived long enough to enjoy RUclips and all the free concerts like this. Steve-you are still loved and missed.
(Steve lived with terminal leukemia for 15 yrs and died at 36 yrs.) ☮
RIP to the greatest songwriter of our time.
I saw them play this at a concert near Washington, DC back in 1981. I never get tired of hearing those guitars. Goodman died a few years later as I recall. Prine is struggling with the coronavirus now. Here's hoping he pulls through and lives a long time.
He's gone💔
Ty you John for all the great memories.
Your are beautiful and timeless. We miss you
I never get tired of listening to this. Thank you John and Steve--we miss you both so much!
So good I keep coming back 👍
RIP John, I'll be crying for the next couple of days. You'll be missed very much. 😢😢😢
I can't stop crying.
I
Every time I watch John Prine, I feel like I've been given a gift from God
Goodman is amazing on the guitar, John is very good also but Steve Goodman is unbelievable!
Both are equal in their gifts….
@@lawrence1960 both were extremely talented differently. But I'm not gonna argue with you, if you say they were equal, that's fine.
I misunderstood your original comment Lawrence, please forgive me.
I couldn't agree with you more.
Steve Goodman was so wonderful. The admiration on his face for John Prine is priceless
Anytime I need a smile I come back for his little look n shoulder shrug at JP.
was fortunate enough to see/listen to both Steve G & John P individually and together, College of DuPage way back in the late 70s. Have numerous Goodman albums/songs. Few had more wit and entertained more than Goodman. He was quick with a quip and yet refreshingly modest/humble at the same time. He inspired me to learn how to play a number of his songs. Rest in Peace Steve G knowing you left this world a much better place!
channel I wish I had all of the Goodman albums!
