In 2020 I made a sign in my garden dedicating it to John.

Steve is an obviously talented artist, but imo, this flippant performance epitomizes the urban Leftist's characterization of country folk and their inability to empathize with the blue collar - manual labor - hard working man's struggle. I like David Allen Coe's version better, way more soul. And it's interesting because these two are near polar opposites, but somehow come close, like in the horseshoe political analogy. And it's not surprising that a small stature man like Steve would capitalise on his innate talent to humorize and mock what is traditionally the purview of tough rugged men.

What a treasure these interviews were to listen to. From the folks who knew Goodman best, Such little nuggets of comments from Kristoffferson on Cash, and Prine's take on "You Never Even Call Me By My Name." I will never forget seeing him walk across the lawn at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival once before anyone was there and he just looked up to those towering mountains--and with his size, he was REALLY looking up!--and his eyes got so big and his smile got so big in awe of the scenery.. I will never forget that sweet image of him.

Very sad OK he pressed way from pizza. Shit he should not have but anyway life goes on. I miss Jon and all is good songs and wisdom.

Steve wrote "The City Of New Orleans" on his way down to meet up with his future in-laws and his fiancee. The day he left on that train, he had been told by his oncologist/hematologist that he had leukemia. Imagine the emotions he must have been feeling as he took that train (of the same name). I don't think many people would have had the guts to channel their energy into such a gorgeous song with that hanging over their heads.

I have loved his music since the 70's and still do!! I played his song "In spite of ourselves" at my husband's celebration of life because it described us completely and we made it our song? Miss them both....
