I became a fan when I watched the movie fire down below and his song paradise came on during the credits, I fell in love with prines singing, this was in the early 00s
I wonder if he remembered saying that before he dug up the clip or if it hit him just as much as us right now... It's like the "Smash glass in case of Emergency" label...
"...unless, you know, something terrible happens and we have to cheer up the world on the TV show." Thank you for planning ahead Stephen and get well soon John.

Also, love listening to you sing Stephen!!☺️😁🥰 Please pull through Mr. John Prine!!!🤗🤗
I have survived cancer, near death, my first love, love that is true and the joy that is life because of John Prine and his music. Thank you for sharing this message and song. Very fitting.
“That’s the way that the world goes round, you’re up one day the next you’re down” I’m sure Mr Prine would have a clever lyric for his death. 73 years but his music is here forever no virus can take that away from us.
“We’ll probably do this for the internet, unless something terrible happens and we have to cheer people up”. Such a heartfelt and prescient statement Stephen. What a beautiful moment in music history.
I listened to Joan Baez singing ""Hello In There"" earlier and now I am listening to John and Stephen, today has become a good day. Get well soon, John.
John Prine has been the best songwriter you never heard of since the late 1960s. I've been a fan since 1976. He's one of those talents who has just kept pumping out the gems decade after decade, but rarely got mainstream play until fairly recently. His popularity has soared in recent years. And he is a seemingly tireless worker, touring more than just about anyone. If you like his music, you've got about 50 years worth to experience. He writes many catchy tunes, but you've got to enjoy lyrics, because that's where the real magic in his music lies. Many of his fans, me included, feel as though he has written the soundtrack to their lives, that's how well he connects with people through his music. In my mind, he is definitely a National Treasure, and he needs to survive this. He's got to.
Unfortunately, John just passed away at 73. He died from coronavirus, the story was just broken by the New York Times. It’s quite a loss. Still. This video is a great memory of the man
Harriotte Worthington I saw JP in a gymnasium at UW-Oshkosh in Sept, 1972 for the first time. There were maybe 50 people there. I instantly fell in love with him and his stories that he sang. Been following him ever since. Praying for him and his family. Hang in there John, you can beat this!
Lindsay Heiden my first concert was 1976 in an gymnasium in Lexington Ky, about the same number of people. No chairs, sitting on the floor like little hippie wannabes. I even had a daisy in my hair. John Prine brings joy to the world!!!
Prine was 1st person here in Nashville who died from Covid. He lived 2 blocks from my elementary school. I have 150 year old family roots in Muhlenberg County and have driven past Paradise coal mine 1000x. I feel like a favorite uncle died when he left our world.
I got to witness John Prine in June 1989.I was nine months pregnant.waddled my self into my seat..laughed so hard I cried.clapped till my hands were sore, I went home glowing, I went into labor later that night. My son was born.He is a published Poet.He swears John Prine shaped his mind prebirth.I think he is right, sending you all the light and love you so deserve.Nate says hi.

I can easily believe you Stephen Colbert when you say this was one of your happiest moments on your show. Thank you for sharing that special moment with all of us.
The news today is terrible. I was looking for some of his old songs to show my girlfriend, as she’s never heard of him and I found this. Damnit, Colbert... this was beautiful. 😢 thank you for this and for releasing it. ❤️🤍💙
Its been on the internet for years now. I always like watching it n seeing Stephens reaction when he sings the naked as the eyes of a clown line. He gives a little smirk like damn that's great. U can sense the admiration he had for him
Uberqueenbee “Please don’t bury me” & “Sam Stone” were the only songs I had heard of by Prine. Then my second husband Louie introduced me to the vast collection of John Prine & Prine’s friend (who sadly died too young years ago now) Steve Goodman. My Louie died 2013 also too young- of the many things we shared or I learned from him Music has been the best gift. I can sing along to most of John Prine’s songs as they were regularly played. Prayers for John & his wife & family. Thanks for the happy times in my life, too!
I both love and hate this video. Love because it’s just a magical performance!!! Hate because the world is so much a sadder place without John and seeing him happy here makes me cry every.single.time. It’s an odd thing to say because I never met him but I feel like one of my best friends is gone. God, how I miss John. 😔

I don’t know that there’s been a week since all this started that I haven’t watched this video. Beautiful, heartbreaking, and innately prophetic all at the same time. I love this video; please never delete it.
We're all waiting for the sun to come in the window and break up the ice. It'll come soon enough for us all especially Mr. Prine! Thoughts and prayers my man you got this!
Everyone is a John Prine fan. They just don't know it yet.
i didn't know it. But I know It now
I didn't know it either, but I am now and my son doesn't know it either but he is soon to become a fan also.
It takes maybe 15 minutes to make someone into a John Prine fan.

Serena Johnson
Yes. It’s OMG moment!
I wonder if he remembered saying that before he dug up the clip or if it hit him just as much as us right now...
It's like the "Smash glass in case of Emergency" label...
Future hindsight is a superpower.
Serena Johnson Hehe. I posted the same thing. 😁
He said he filmed it in 2016 so I wonder if he had a Trump related catastrophe in mind.
When he said “unless something terrible happens” I broke into tears. RIP John Prine.
God, me too
I did the same.
So did I.
I feel that. What a tragedy when we lost one of the greatest songwriters this world will ever know.
Of all of the things that Covid took from us, I never anticipated John Prine being on of them. A real shame.
Here it is 2024 and I just watched this for the umpteenth time. I miss John.
"...unless, you know, something terrible happens and we have to cheer up the world on the TV show."
Thank you for planning ahead Stephen and get well soon John.
@ Opus313 My thoughts exactly. This was wonderful to watch. So glad Stephen posted it.
@Pink Freud Hey now! a little positivity and a prayer (of any kind) for Mr. Prine!
@Pink Freud just because the music is dated doesn't mean be deserves what's happening, man.
@Pink Freud fair enough. Yeah, I've had it with the Cheeto
@Pink Freud Plenty do. Including my mom at 76.
Unbelievably moving. This is this planet's theme song now.

He's the best damn songwriter I've seen in my time

Never heard of John Prine until this week. He seems beloved so I'm rooting for his recovery.
I first heard of him after Natalie Merchant, Michael Stipe, and Billy Bragg did a live version of 'Hello In There.' It's on RUclips.
