I saw Prince, The Time and Vanity 6 live in Florida back in 1983. All three sets were awsome. Jesse Johnson is definitely an underrated musician and deserves more credit
I have just acquired the most respect for Jesse Johnson after he presented his thoughts in this interview. What a decent, classy guy. In fact, I haven't put on any of his music in a great, many while but I am inspired to go throw on some 'Be Your Man, Baby' or 'Crazy.' Big props to this brotha. I appreciate you, man.
DIS MAY BE ONE OF DA BEST INTERVIEWS I'VE HEARD ON PRINCE CAUSE DA INTERVIEWER SAID LITTLE AND LET JESSIE TALK ALL HE WANTED TO.PLUS JESSIE REALLY LOVED PRINCE.I CAN JUST TELL THEY WERE BOYS FOR REAL.
I really admire Jesse, period. His musicianship, his demeanor, his outlook which is very much down to earth - everything! I wish more "stars" would take this attitude and be appreciative of what they've gained. I get sick of hearing so many entertainers getting bent out of shape over menial crap, especially when it doesn't concern them. I mostly felt that Jesse was a solid individual, same as I did about much of The Time, and the entire Minneapolis sound machine, and certainly not forgetting about it's "creator." ;) He authored and mentored some of the very best in the business. . . RIP PRN
As Prince matured so did his wardrobe and he toned down his very sexually explicit lyrics. It was evident in songs like "Kiss, Adore, Forever in My Life, Delirious, Call My Name, Mountains, Girls and Boys, and of course Purple Rain. He was very concerned about the type of image he was setting for today's youth. So he traded his bikini panties and ruffled shirts and laced gloves, mascara and eyeliner for taylor made suits and matching shirts and pants. His whole image over the course of his career has changed dramatically!!!!!!!!
That was in the beginning of his career where he was exploring and getting to know how far he could go. Later on In an interview he was asked how come you don't sing Erotic City anymore. Prince' said that he evolved and that there are some things he use to do that he doesn't do anymore.
Kay Robbie Prince said when you're 20 you go to the ledge just because it's there. He meant that you push it because you're young for the attention but, Prince could definitely back it up with his Mega Talent & will never be forgotten.
Yes, I remember Prince saying that a lot of things he did early and that he didn't do anymore. Prince also started thinking about kids listening to some of his old songs. He said: "What do you do with the kids listening to that old stuff?"
Kay Robbie Yup from the get go every album since his debut represented an evolution of where he was at musically, sound, image, songs and writing. Man that guy was a genius no one did what he did before he came along what he did was a revolution of sort.

Erotic City was one of his greatest songs. It was raw sexuality in an honest and authentic way. Sexuality and Creativity are tied together by Spirituality and Prince instinctively felt that during his younger years. I think that his later religious leanings actually hi jacked his true spirituality as he attempted to edit his earlier masterpieces.
Thank you Jesse Johnson for doing the interview! I have a better understanding, about Prince ! You both are my idol's! I grew up in Minnesota! Was so proud to live there! You guys put made Minnesota famous!
Prince was magnificent at portraying both male and female characters, extremely well and played the media with his sexuality and effeminate style. He wasn't afraid to show both sides of himself. He was strong, and confident in his gifts and personality. Breathtakingly beautiful inside and out. He was the baddest. I can tell Jesse loved his friend and is thankful for the life he has because of Prince. He's real. A lot of people have Prince to thank for their careers and success.
Atom 79 He wasn't trans, he was androgynous. Completely different things. That is someone who has equal parts male and female characteristics. He didn't have a desire to be a female. Male and female characteristics make up all of us, some of us are more effeminate and some of us are more masculine.
Great interview. Jessie is always so blatantly honest. Loves it when he laid it out about millionaires who complain about their problems. Of course they do! Who doesn't. Some may forget that because they like to draw attention to themselves. Prince was so above that because he, like Jessie, focused on the good.
I love the way Jesse Johnson articulates his feelings, opinions and truths about his experiences with Prince ..... basically Prince and Jesse were like minded artists, period!!! They were destined to meet each other and become great friends....I love both of these brilliant musicians!!! 👑👑👍💕🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I love Jesse Johnson, had all of his albums. He is a special musician who bmo is one the greatest guitarists, his wisdom and positivity is inspiring. What a lucky man!!
Jesse is right. Every musician has influences. They are the artists that make you want to play in the first place. As long as you take those influences and create your signature sound and never try to imitate an artist note for note. I'm a musician, I play guitar, bass and keys and Prince is a major influence but I have so much more including the ones Jesse just mentioned. - Hornz.
Jacqueline Perry Liberace? I doubt that! Haven't heard one reference of him from Prince in over 40 years. But, it's on the internet so it must be true....😊
Reginald Marshall - You're kidding right? Little Richard says so himself. Esquerita taught Little Richard piano. None of Little Richard's early music was the way it was until after he met Esquerita, who had already been doing his style for years. Little Richard was just more in view - just like how Elvis was more in view than Little Richard. We can all pretty much assume this is the case with all the "greats"... and I've seen this type of thing play out in real life too. There are so many people today who get credit for things I know personally belong to other people more so. Of course Little Richard was a great performer and influence but he did not invent it by himself. The only reason Little Richard gets credited for being a big influence is because he was lucky enough to have so much exposure to begin with. Had Esquarita had that kind of luck we'd all be crediting him instead.
I can't even watch anything on Prince without crying. I miss him so much. Two geniuses gone,MJ and Prince, music will never be the same. Elvis,Micahel Jackson,Prince, and Frank Sinatra, one of a kind. Will be copied but never duplicated.
Jesse is one of the FEW realist out there!! He spoke it from the heart, and it showed. I follow him on face book, and have followed him since the beginning of his career...just like Prince!!
Great interview jessie, thanks for being honest, and your friend Prince. It sucks when people start saying a bunch of bullshit about Prince, thank you for the love you shared with us about Prince, 💜💜🎶💜🎶
Great interview I read some of the comments I don't understand the people that say Jesse was being disrespectful. He acknowledged that Prince put him on and that they were friends ffs.
Yo Jesse you were an influence too. Your band in the mid 80's, when I was envying you guys, helped me listen, you guys had some dope production. How to mix, where to put what etc. We played Can You Help Me.. lol you're only 20 once.
It is so nice to hear Jesse speak so well about Prince and show his appreciation and love for him! Jessie, thanks for being yourself and humble! 💞💞💞💞💞💕💕💕
Prince put a lot of people on the map...So Jesse, the homies, the girls, the boys, the men...all in his life were included and they complemented one another...even today...This is how to bring folks back to reality. Yet outsiders are curious to know more about Prince because of his uniqueness and success...Prince earlier years...he did not let the Media and Tabloids, interfere into his privacy nor give interviews which is why more of him is insisted upon to know more about this man, the music...the artistry. Prince touched a lot of people in more ways than one...Prince Revolutionized the Music Industry by tearing down old walls.
This interview is as real as it gets . One great talented artist respecting another great talented artist . It’s always refreshing to hear from the inside about the real Prince and not the tabloid news of Prince. Very insightful on both of their influences. A real perspective on the progression of Prince . His musical style his Ambiguous Style. I did not know the connection between 1999 and the mamas and the Papas song Monday Monday. This interview has been very inspiration to me .
You also have to remember that "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" was a major factor in late-70s "underground" culture...even though it initially came out in 1975. The Dr. Frank-N-Furter character (played by Tim Curry), seems to have been a persona that Prince adopted, knowing full well that his "target audience" and "existing fans" would/could relate. You can tell from Prince's lyrics that he was a very deep thinker, and drew a lot of them from thoughts/actions associated with his fairly strong libido :-)
There’s nothing to suggest that he was a fan of that movie or character at all. No “underground,” “target audience” or “existing fanbase” just a musician expressing themselves as they saw fit. That character was a transgender and Prince was simply androgynous, which means he had no desire to be a woman and simply leaned into his feminine energy. He was just inspired by the musicians that came before him, and found his own unique way to blend a mix of their styles to fit himself as a person.
I think he admired his father his father was like that if you look at the interviews of his father you will find if you look deep in the conversation that he's having that his father is like that playing the piano four naked horse with beautiful clothes
This interview has changed the Fan's out look on Jessie Johnson!! It seem to be he had love for Prince!! Good thoughts came out his mouth, he had respect for the purple one.. I hope the others feel the same way Jessie feels.. Thank you for a great interview💜💜🎸 Prince forever🎸💜💜🎶
it was all a gimmick along with the shy mystique and being a private entertainer. and then would come out on stage and just rip it up. Blending punk, new wave, rock, funk rhythm and blues and soul .and basically a self taught musician.
Don’t like to get in the comment cat fight arena but Kirk and Prince were not lovers. Prince kept a fine woman around him period. What man has come forward saying he was smashing Prince? Ok
JESSIE GREAT INTERVIEW!!! HISTORY OF MUSIC AND IMAGES OR INFLUENCES GO AROUND AND AROUND!! You all do realize Prince's persona was closest to a pimp, and pimps, while they are "pretty," they are pretty badass, and they will beat your ass. He was saying he was not to be messed with. I think he got the idea for that somewhere - he and Morris Day used to rag on some guy like that. Did the voice and everything. But pimps held a lot of power and power was Prince's thing. Every part of Prince's image was about power: The REVOLUTION. New POWER Generation. THIRD EYE Girl. Combine that with pieces of icons like Little Richard, Hendrix, Mozart or James Brown and you get Prince. If you look closely, Prince was not gay. He loved women. He played up his sexuality, like all celebs did back in the 70s and 80s, to get more fans. (and for all you astrology buffs, yes, Prince's sun sign was Gemini, but his Pluto was in Leo: the sign of the performer/ego/the iconoclast. www.astrotheme.com/astrology/Prince_(musician))
I am listening to this interview and reading the comments and it's like people are hearing something different...i don't hear hate or jealousy...people need to stop trying to make something out of nothing...
Its like recipes....there were 1000 original recipes and everything came from that! Same with music! Prince was an alchemist in the rhythm section and created his sound.
That’s right! If people would really took time out and really listen to Strange Relationship, you really can compare it to Family Affair by Sly And The Family Stone.
Starting from 7:10 going into several more seconds, Jesse said a mouth full!! AND he iterated he himself was not a millionaire!! It makes me think of all the 'A list' actors who go back and forth with a director or producer about some minuscule BS item in an entire production they hold up b/c of a damned disagreement on it. There's a helluva lot to learn from 99%'ers, even in the entertainment industry.
He did bend genders, so to speak. He did it so people wouldn't be concerned about him and the white girls on the road. But he had them fooled. Sort of. Little Richard liked all kinds of people...
brownin329 | No he wasn't bending genders. In America in the 1950s you could still get jailed and/or "lynched" for just wearing women's attire. Which contradicts your playing it safe comment. Most gays want everyone else to be gay, so they make similar broad conclusions. As songstress Patti La Belle said: Blacks feared for Little Richard's life. He was risque, Liberace and others were clownish, Little Richard was hyper-sexual. Big difference.😶
ijcn0jir3nvjn3fjcifn | Esquerita who??? Esquerita is about as Blues/Rock as Liberace. It's not just about cross-dressing or gender-bending it's about the ingenuity of a NEW Revolution (THE BLUES: Jazz; Rock; Pop; Hip-Hop and etc.) aka Black Music! 😮 This is the problem with music today, assholes believe just because they are "QUEER" they think they are "Avantgarde"! They're NOT! David Bowie's hero was Little Richard. Bowie (or Prince) was ONLY a pioneer in the minds of "WHITE-PEOPLE" and "QUEERS". Bye! 🚶
ijcn0jir3nvjn3fjcifn | Old age kills Comprehension, obviously. Ever hear of sarcasm? Esquerita taught him how to play the piano but NOT Rock-'n'-roll! 😮
ijcn0jir3nvjn3fjcifn | Ignorant as I knew, there's a difference between "reading" and "comprehension". 😂 White-boys always think they know more about Black-People, you fucking don't.😑
Jesse described prince's artistry to a T. Bowie, jagger, Marvin and then regurgitate sly stone and James Brown. Then added Hendricks etc etc!!! #genius!!!
If Prince was playing pre-Purple Rain today in 2017 he wouldn't last. Prince also listened to a lot of James Brown. Prince was a powerhouse...still can't believe he's gone and the way he died still eats me up. The late 70's early 80's Prince is where I hold all my memories of Prince coming of age during that time.
@vickiesharper2365 He's probably right in some way. The melodies and genres from the pre Purple Rain would have fit better in 2017 than the Love Sexy and Diamond and Pearl era but the lyrics can't. If Prince would release albums like Dirty Mind and Controversy in 2017, he would have got canceled with the erotic, homo, and races lyrics in most of them.
In your wildest ass dreams. Prince don't choke. He could've took command of that stage if he wanted to. This coming from a J.B. fan all the way back to the Famous Flames.
The real reason Prince Rogers Nelson was a gender-bender was because he was paying homage to the German cabaret legacy of the 1920's. His stage clothes, his performances, his dance moves, his makeup, his hairstyle they were all borrowed from the Weimar cabaret culture. Look at this video to find out more: ruclips.net/user/edit?o=U&video_id=rl694JuK06g
Went from an interview about Prince to an interview about JJ, Mama's and Pappas bruh? DON'T SOUND SHIT LIKE 1999!! LOL Luv you Jesse, umma clown you when I see you in January boy!!
Liberace! LITTLE RICHARD! DAVID BOWIE!JAMES Brown! JimiHindrix! Rick James! Great Since Of Humor! Prince ROGERSNELSON Is So SHY&CUTE! WHEN HE SMILES AT THEM ALL 😍 💕 💓 ❤ 💖 💜!
I dont buy Jesse's explanation. prince said he was pretty sure one of his alters was a girl. wendy said he definitely had a girl side that she could have fallen in love with. thats not something you get imitating someone else - that comes from inside. this interview is all over the place.
I agree but a friend especially a young friend or anyone for that matter doesnt have to know u 100% or be accurate in their experience of u.... Including Wendy! And ultimately we all knew him alot less than they did. Me i realise my take on it is just an opinion. Im of the opinion of you but it is just that ..an opinion. I dont actually know any of that
The pic on the far left is photoshopped, Prince never wore THAT much makeup...(Edit: I stand corrected, it isnt photoshop. I just never saw Prince with that much makeup before and was taken aback. I thought for sure it was photoshopped...)
Google Images of Prince in a dress there he wore a leather Mini skirt and heels with a woman's hat go check it and stop lying to yourself fool
7 лет назад
Even in the pics displayed here show Prince in feminine clothing with his nipples exposed and the poke a dot pantsuit which females wear men don't wear clothes that come around the neck and expose the shoulders and ribs idiot that is gay wear
As a men if you call yourself a prince and no a king is a feminine Mind set. I'm not saying he was gay but he was trying to appeal to the feminine crowd. Ass out at his performance in not saying he's gay but he was very feminine.
+Mike Jr Prince Rogers was his father’s stage name as a musician. He said he gave his son the name because he wanted him to be everything he couldn’t be as a musician. It was significant to him and his wife.

(and for all you astrology buffs, yes, Prince's sun sign was Gemini, but his Pluto was in Leo: the sign of the performer/ego/the iconoclast. www.astrotheme.com/astrology/Prince_(musician))
browin329 At last we have someone on this board who has got it all about right.
brownin329 He definitely was a Pimp. The best (imo)... And knew how to work the stage with the power that his pimpness afforded him!
His Royal Pimpness??
hagnuj Prince performed a concert at an after-show party of Gianni Versace.
He was also a Jehovah's witness before his death. And they don't believe in Zodiac signs! At least respect the man's beliefs!
Never saw that they didn't like little Richard cause he talked a lot but he was truthful they never wanted to hear the truth.
No, he played with the media!
He just wanted to provoke, he particularly enjoyed it....
Jesse is a class act.
Patrick Foster all the WAY....
Dez Dickerson said the same about those days. Great 5 years. Fun times, food fights etc.
I am listening to this interview and reading the comments and it's like people are hearing something different...i don't hear hate or jealousy...people need to stop trying to make something out of nothing...
Great interview
loyalty. Class act
Jessie should've had a curl named after him....
drippy perfection
True Musicians... share different artists styles... We love you all...
You should have changed the pictures up a little bit.
Had the biggest crush on Jessie Johnson. I still love him. He always spit the real.
RIP Prince A'SE A'SE A'SE
Its like recipes....there were 1000 original recipes and everything came from that! Same with music! Prince was an alchemist in the rhythm section and created his sound.
Geminis. They have all have dual sides
Jessie is a living legend. Thanks Jessie for this interview this was so informative.
I meant Jesse
That’s right! If people would really took time out and really listen to Strange Relationship, you really can compare it to Family Affair by Sly And The Family Stone.
"Ballad Of Dorothy Parker" sounds even more like Family Affair...the tempo, the bass tone, keyboard programming
Yes , David Bowie did dress in women's outfits on stage. I saw him do it alot.
🎼Little Richard is the "Architect". The rest are ALL faking it. Richard was not "gender-bending" or "drugging", he was the "Wild-Rockstar".🎹
This is the problem with music today, assholes believe just because they are "QUEER" they think they are "Avantgarde"!
White-boys always think they know more about Black-People, you fucking don't.😑
Great interview. Stand up guy jesse johnson.
Jessie....omg mad love for you.... you should do more interviews your mind is. an amazing Tripp around the world.......
I could hear Jesse talk all day.
JJ Lays down the analysis and respect🎉
!!Continued blessings!!
I really enjoyed listening to this Jesse Johnson interview and it also confirmed who I thought was one of Prince's influence which was Little Richard.
Will I ... Don't agree at all. You said if Prince was playing pre& Purple Rain in 2017 he wouldn't last...."That's just Bullshit"
@vickiesharper2365 He's probably right in some way. The melodies and genres from the pre Purple Rain would have fit better in 2017 than the Love Sexy and Diamond and Pearl era but the lyrics can't. If Prince would release albums like Dirty Mind and Controversy in 2017, he would have got canceled with the erotic, homo, and races lyrics in most of them.
ok, the last part made me tear up a bit.
THANKS FOR SHARING * JESSE IS AMAZING*
Much respect to you jessie for your respect to Prince
Plus it got him on mtv as well.
Seems like Everyone then & now portraying lil Richard
I just thought he was gay. Was shocked to learn he was straight when I was older.
Really naw man not gay, in your mind dude😮
Beautiful....☔️❤️
Good interview but comical at the same time I love and miss prince
In your wildest ass dreams. Prince don't choke. He could've took command of that stage if he wanted to. This coming from a J.B. fan all the way back to the Famous Flames.
The real reason Prince Rogers Nelson was a gender-bender was because he was paying homage to the German cabaret legacy of the 1920's. His stage clothes, his performances, his dance moves, his makeup, his hairstyle they were all borrowed from the Weimar cabaret culture. Look at this video to find out more: ruclips.net/user/edit?o=U&video_id=rl694JuK06g
J.J. man you are a real man that's humble no regrets just thank yous. "Millionaires bitchin. " Wow !!! Thanks life is beautiful.
Ultimate Funk Grand Master the Honorable Prince Rogers Nelson.
Jesse is cool as *F*....love this interview
Say it Jesse ,i love me some Jesse.
Prince obviously got the "gender-bending" thing from British/European new wave/New Romantics + LA what became hair metal etc.
" I want my girl .." Jesse Johnson
Tess Wonderful it's actually a collection of various interviews
Camille was the girl alter.
VENT! News Camille is my side to say and do the things I do... Another side.GENIUS. ....x
I dont actually know any of that
Tess Wonderful "Prince was a "lady's man" .ask Kim Baysinger or the countless other women he had...
"Jessie! Nah nah Jerome, yes!"
awsome awwwwsssoome loved this
The pic on the far left is photoshopped, Prince never wore THAT much makeup...(Edit: I stand corrected, it isnt photoshop. I just never saw Prince with that much makeup before and was taken aback. I thought for sure it was photoshopped...)
Brown Royal Unfortunately you're wrong. He did wear that much makeup in this pic which is the cover of the Lovesexy tour program
Jgutie 15: Oh....
Google Images of Prince in a dress there he wore a leather Mini skirt and heels with a woman's hat go check it and stop lying to yourself fool
Even in the pics displayed here show Prince in feminine clothing with his nipples exposed and the poke a dot pantsuit which females wear men don't wear clothes that come around the neck and expose the shoulders and ribs idiot that is gay wear
DISMISSED
Love you Jesse 💜
As a men if you call yourself a prince and no a king is a feminine Mind set. I'm not saying he was gay but he was trying to appeal to the feminine crowd. Ass out at his performance in not saying he's gay but he was very feminine.
+Mike Jr How is calling himself Prince a feminine mindset? Prince was his name at birth. Prince Rogers Nelson
T. S. Woods Prince is only a tittle from one day being king you should never name your child Prince. It's just a tittle a boys tittle
+Mike Jr Prince Rogers was his father’s stage name as a musician. He said he gave his son the name because he wanted him to be everything he couldn’t be as a musician. It was significant to him and his wife.
I miss him! RIP baby!
BECAUSE THE CHICKS DIG IT MAN...... DUH....
Elvis in the early days before the Army , wore mascara .
