low voltage is main problem keep battery near 13.2 volt a 12 volt battery is 50% charge .Emergency steps to lower or lift the lower unit while in the water
switch ECM relay, tap on relay motor , open screw on the side. low voltage is main problem
full charge battery is at 13.2 volt make sure you are above 11.5 volt and cables are clean

Lifting a DF 140 lower unit requires 3 turns on side screw and about 150lb of lift using man power or hoist if the issue is due to trim motor going bad we recommend to have it fix ASAP as it is difficult to lift the motor .
    outboard requires
On outboard tapping trim motor works well, follow the electrical wire near steering to locate trim motor and tap the head.
On i/o system inboard outboard usually fresh water boat with Volvo engine . loosen the hydraulic and relive the pressure and then you can move the lower unit. there be spill of hydraulic fluid . tie the lower unit using ropes to correct position so you can get home. do this if battery is charged otherwise see if battery can move everything by getting a jump . swap relays for up and down as well.

does this happen on both switches and fully charged battery . a 140 hp is near 450lb and a pain to lift using 3 strong guys.

Hey - good information. I just brought home a brand new Suzuki 175 HP. Really excited until the trim would not go up. I just literally drove the new motor home. Trying get away from my old Suzuki motor problems. Yikes. Thanks for temporary fix. Now I need a permanent one. 😀

@@boashna - both switches failed. However, the down will work. Just before I left the marine mechanic he put the trim up and down. After a 30 mile drive it doesn’t work (up). The batteries are charged. We will see. Your video is timely I will use the screw option. Thanks.

@@boashna - Thank you. The battery voltage once plugged in for both batteries were fine. So, I did lower the boat engine using the screw technique -- GREAT - backed the boat the rest of the way into the garage. Door shut. 😀. Here is the deal. Once the motor came all the way down and I re-tightened the screw the up trim worked. Engine raised - no strange sounds - just as it should. So, we have a little mystery here. Was it a fluke? (Rhetorical question) I guess I will find out. I did let my marine mechanic know and he thought the main power switch was off - but it wasn’t. Anyways - your technique worked for me THANK YOU. We will see what the future holds? Thank God for His mercies.

@@boashna - Again thank you for your tips. I did find out the problem with my Suzuki 175 HP. My marine mechanic came by who rigged the new motor. On the motor there is a sensor switch that allows you to set how far you want the engine go UP. It is a little switch you can move with your finger. You push it all the way down, or where you want it, to control how far the engine trim will allow it to rise. Such a “little thing.” He showed me and I moved it with ease. I shared I did not find it in the manual. He smiled and said this is something mechanics are familiar with and not shared in the basic manual. -- So all is well. Hope to break in the engine when the wind lets down.

There’s also a switch in the middle that cuts the motor off when it hits a certain height that goes bad you can use a flat head screwdriver and push in on it to get your motor to go up all the way

    • @boashna

You are correct- Tilt Limit Switch on newer engines. Most often problem with tilt is bad or low voltage. people think 12 volt is good but you are at 50% charge . 13.2 volts is 100% charge . look up voltage charge chart for more info . I have a video here for it too.

you have a leak - if leak is internal then no fluid will be on the ground and no big deal. Tighten the emergency screw shown on video.. if this is an issue during transportation on trailer you may have a lock tab near the steering cable next to engine. let us know how this effects you.. if it is on water engine should be down anyway and ignore the problem.

Great vid, Quick question. On a 125 outboard force motor. Do you happen to know why my trim motor is making a loud noise once it's red positive line is simply touching my battery . Even before I have touched the trim toggle switch . It's making the same noice as if im touching the switch even when I am not touching the switch ? I'd greatly appreciate any feedback you can provide! Thank you so much for your help 😊

switch is active disconnected follow the wire and unplug very easy to do. I am not sure what you mean by noise . noise to me it needs to be lubricated ..do you mean sound . make sure all grease nipples are greased and trip has fluid .since you are not a subscriber i get your text late. ask more questions if you need to . Trim switch can be activated by very small amount of saltwater if not sealed .

it is hard to tell what needs to be done but motor has a lock to support the engine make sure it is not engaged. if the boat being parked in saltwater without usage steering , throttle locks will freeze. do you see rust on shaft , if possible move it back and forth us. use your weight to push it down . there is trim limiter near steering by primbulb on suzuki . tell us where you keep it and age and last time you used it .

      @boashna  4 года назад

I am late but if you unscrew the hydrophilic line they will spray you but you can move the motor then use the rope to tie the motor in correct position. , charge the battery to overcome rust on connections or switch fuse and relay from up to down or down to up .They have a relay and fuse . listen to click to locate relay when activated. tap on relays to get them working . all of this is caused when boat is not used and things get frozen including steering and jack move everything once a month.

If the motor is stuck in the up position, and you can hear the motor sound of the relay, can it still be a relay problem? I feel like it gets air locked somehow. This has happened twice to me on my 60 HP Mercury outboard. And loosening the screw didn't make it come down...had to remove it completely before it did. What could be wrong?
