    Kinda late for this excellent video. However, as it's really a timeless video, had to see how the lower 2 rams operated and were repaired. BTW, we just got through repairing the Tilt Unit Motor of a 130hp Honda [gunk inside holding the brushes from contacting the rotor] and needed the extra knowledge to work on those rams. What better time to work on the rams than when we have the whole unit on the table. Great stuff guys. . . it really helped! A heartfelt THANK YOU!

    I've got a 2000 Merc 250 EFI on a same year 23' Mako. Been working on it with my son. Great father son time. Since we're on a budget, trying to get the most of what we have.
    I have a question on replacing the manual pressure relief or manual tilt relief or manual tilt valve, whatever its called. I had to drill mine out to tilt the motor. To replace it, do I have to remove the trim and tilt motor, or can it be replaced with TnT motor in place? It looks like there is just a c clip (or banjo clip) holding it in place, as the head has complete disintegrated.

    Great video. I made a tool for removing the caps by using a small piece of scrap steel plate and drilling four holes in the correct place. Then simply put bolts through that fit snugly in the holes in the cap. A central hole with a larger bolt facing the other way and double nuts on it, allowed me to get a spanner on to turn it. Worked great.

How can I be sure those little kickstands will be able to not break under all that pressure? Do you have to have the rams all the way into the cylinders to perform this? Thank you for the great work you are doing! I've been watching all of your videos in the last few years. I have a Yamaha F40 4t for 10 years now. Lately the engine is coming down slowly over night/after few hours. I see no oil leakage, I checked the power trim oil level and everything seems normal. The screw to manually trim the motor is ok as well. I read somewhere that "If no leaks are found, it also could have been a cylinder bypassing internally"... Since I live in a small Greek island where no mechanical issues can be dealt with, can you tell me if you have a video about this specific problem? Thanks again!

      Sounds like one of the trim switches is leaking voltage, possibly the pan switch, unplug the switches one at a time and see if the motor turns off, it should be one of the switches. If not, unplug the the relays and it should stop, then work you way back to the switches from the relays, unplugging the trim wires until you figure out what's leaking voltage

    • @BornAgainBoating

      The only thing I can think of is that the check valves are worn out inside of the unit or one of the balls in the valve is just not closing. Sometimes you can take compressed air and using a nozzle with a rubber tip on it. Shoot air into the unit through the fill port and see if that will dislodge the valve that's allowing it to leak down.
      That's an internal issue and I don't think it is possible to get to those components. Well, I've never tried to take a unit all the way apart that far and see if you can replace the valve or clean it out. It might be possible, but you would have to take the unit all the way out and completely disassemble it.
      If you had a leaky seal and water got in the unit and rusted up the check valves that control that portion of the unit, then you would have to replace the ball or whatever it is that is in that check valve to stop it from leaking down.
      Sorry, that's the only thing I can think of. Let us know what you end up figuring out or doing. That can be frustrating when you trim the engine up and then it slowly leaks down while you are running or if you leave the boat in the water.

      Why do I see so many people having issues when powering the boat on or off a trailer! First of all a lot of boat ramps do not allow you to power on or off of your trailer, Secondly even if it was allowed it is a very disrespectful thing to do! The biggest problem is when idiots use the engines to power onto the trailer, It causes a big washout and then a sandbar behind it! Get your lazy butt off of the boat and crank it onto the trailer! And if you are too lazy to hand crank it just get an electric winch! There is absolutely no reason to wash out the boat ramp!

    Question guys, the hydraulic fluid reservoir is the same for the upper piston so the leak affects all the trim system? Is that okay? Thanks!

    • @BornAgainBoating
      @BornAgainBoating  5 лет назад +1

      Yes, the reservoir is for the whole unit. So any leak at any point in the unit will create an issue over time. If left for too long the unit will eventually fill up with water and start to fail internally and rust from the inside out!

    • @BornAgainBoating
      @BornAgainBoating  5 лет назад +1

      The trim rams are just more commonly needed than the tilt tube seals.
      They do go bad though, and need replaced. I have the recordings to do a tilt ram but haven't gotten the time to make the video yet. It is pretty much the same as doing these trim rams with the exception of taking off the pin that attaches it to the engine.
      As well as having to pull the whole ram out and take the bottom or top, depending on what style you have, of the tilt tube to remove the cap. Then the seals are pretty much the same. A lot of them also have an o-ring in the middle.

    • @drakeastro8131

      @@BornAgainBoating ive always wondered how the seal on the tilt cap comes off.
      Unlike the trim trim rams which has nothing on the ends, the tilt ram has the mount that attaches to the motor at the top, if u slide up its stuck and if u slide it down it hits the base of the piston rod.

      @@drakeastro8131 Yeah, you have to take the entire rod out and then stick it in a vice so you can screw the top off of it and then slide the cap off.
      The rest is the same, take out the pin in the top and then lift the engine up once you get the cap loose. Pull it out and unscrew the top off.
      You sound like you know what you are doing, you shouldn't have too much trouble!

      Be very careful with the piston, it has multiple springs and check balls inside. When the nut come of they go everywhere and unless you have service manual you have to guess which goes where and they are not identical, Ask how I know.

    Hey brother,does the starter needs to be hooked up for the trim to go up and down?

    • @BornAgainBoating
      @BornAgainBoating  9 месяцев назад

      Yes, in some cases, the starter needs to be engaged for the trim to operate on certain boats. This is for safety reasons and ensures there's enough power available to operate the trim system.

    Will the Moto-Stop wrench that you used work on other trim and tilts than yamaha and sea star hydraulic steering?

    • @BornAgainBoating
      @BornAgainBoating  5 лет назад

      Yes, it will do a few other engines, but I don't think it will on the seastar steering cylinders. The seastar wrench works pretty well, you can hook a 3/8" ratchet to it for some leverage. Plus the caps come with the kit, so you can air hammer them off and not worry about destrying the caps :) There are a lot of different engines though, so they make a few different styles :)

    • @BornAgainBoating
      @BornAgainBoating  5 лет назад +1

      I'm not 100% on the exact procedure for that exact model. Most of the little engine's under 40 the trim units only consist of a couple of pins and then slide right out. You should be able to pull it out, there is definitely a way to remove it, I'm sorry that I don't have the exact procedure for that exact model of engine, but you should be fine and when you look at it hopefully it is just a pin at the top and a pin at the bottom!

    Can you do the middle rod seal without removing the whole bracket mount?2002 Yamaha f225. Thanks

    • @BornAgainBoating
      @BornAgainBoating  5 лет назад

      Yes, make sure you have the cowling off to get you some more room. Then with the top pin out of the top of the middle tilt ram, pick up on the lower unit to tilt the engine forward into the boat. Hopefully there is enough room there with the engine pushed up to pull the middle ram down and then out of the unit. Be carefull not to pull the ram cylinder too far forward and mess up that pipe. Usually there is enough room in the transom well to have enough room to pull the cylinder out. I'll hopefully be making a video on this in a few months. Sorry I don't have it up yet :) Good luck!

    • @BornAgainBoating
      @BornAgainBoating  5 лет назад

      Either one of two things: The manual relief valve on the side of the unit is leaking or not operating properly and allowing it to leak down. Or the check valves inside the unit itself are not shutting all the way and allowing it to leak down. See if there are any leaks and the fluid has got water in it, maybe just flushing it out and putting new fluid in there will get it to start holding the engine up again :)

    How to unstick a lower unit skeg on a older Yamaha 150 2 cycle motor. I can only pry it one half inch and it stays stuck. I assume my drive shaft spindles are rusted and stuck. I saw a video of a guy using wood shims but my narrow side of the skeg barely opens up to stick even a screw driver in . Since it is aluminum I gotta be careful when prying. Any Ideas? I saw a guy flip over his motor and put Gunk degreaser down the spline and let it sit for two days to get it to release.
