carb and fueil pump were done the tank been clean filled premium gas on my 30 hp mariner still won't start unless l hold the throttle partway .what could be the problem?
Bad fuel or fuel filter, and usually stater, would effect all 3 cylinders, though no filter as was the case could send clogs to some carburetors and not others, as is almost always the case and should usually be checked first to save time. Also, If you remove the plug wires at the upstream end, at the coil, you are far less likely to get zapped, though sometimes they are glued on.
@@marcelcorbeil615 Blocked Idle circuit perhaps - I usually open the carbs up and put them in an ultrasonic bath to remove the varnish from all of the internal parts..Many people seem to think that a rebuild kit always works but actually this does not remove all fuel varnish from the internal parts.

Kudos on the thorough diagnostic steps. I just used this to get my 1975 Johnson 125hp up and running. I cleaned all the carbs as I found a plugged and failed fuel filter, and 2 bad coil packs. She runs like it did 2 years ago.
Not likely; a warmed up (The one that was actually firing) cylinder will usually test tighter than cold cylinders. It should be said that "compression testing" is not really a reliable way to evaluate a rotating assembly. I have encountered many pistons with mangled piston skirts that "pass" a compression test. This is because the skirt/sleeve damage does not make it up to TDC in the cylinder. Leak down testing has been the industry standard for some time now.
Ben Goulding leak down test on a 2 stroke outboard, seriously??? It’s basically impossible, unless you remove the power head ( maybe motorcycle, not boats ) . Leak down test are performed in 4 stroke engines.
So I learned from you in 15 min what it took nearly 15 years of boating and learning (the hard way) on my own. Granted there was no youtube when I first started doing boat maintenance. This video is short and to the point. And to anyone reading my comment I STRONGLY recommend a fuel stabilizer such as Startron or Stabil.
I disagree. Using stabilizer in any boat engine that might be unused for an extended period of time is a bad idea. It usually gums up the carburetor and fuel lines. To be sure that there isn't any damage all of the old gas should be drained out of both the engine and tanks.
Excellent video! So grateful for this step by step diagnostic process. I have watched many of your other motor and boat restoration videos but this one is my favorite so far. Thanks! More like this please!

You fixed it but it would be nice to hear what the solution exactly was. Why was the engine only firing on one cylinder when it seems there was a carburetor issue? Just a little recap would be great. You are a really good teacher
Bit late, but in case anyone was wondering. Each cylinder on this engine has its own carb. It is just a lottery which one plugs up first or last. So yes, on a two cylinder with only one carb like an 8 HP or a 9.9 the blocked carb will stop both cylinders from firing, but not on this one.

Very important, when you do carburetor cleaning make sure to check and clean fuel lines, change fuel filter, change the water separator and that the fuel in the tank is clean as well, otherwise you just waisted your time and money
Good vid on basic diagnosis. FYI it's actually 10% variance on pressure between cylinders rather than 10PSI... so if the bigh cylinder's only 90PSI you want less than 9PSI difference, but if it's 160PSI you can have a 16PSI difference. Also if you're going to spend the money on a decent (or even a cheap) compression gauge it's worth having a remote start button too. You can buy them, or you can make one simply enought with a cheap press button, two wires, and two spring clamps and use it to trip the starter relay. Means you can watch the guage, look for spark, etc a lot easier. Makes life much easier.
Hi Eric, I jut bought a 2007 25hp 4-stroke Mercury with EFI, and took it out yesterday for the first time. It would not seem to go very fast even though it is on a 12ft RIB, a relatively light boat. It struggled to get my buddy and I on plane... took like 20mins but we finally got on plane. Then when we slowed down and tried it again, it never happened.. it just felt like we we going 5-8mph with the bow way up on the air.. just no power at WOT. I also noticed the water coming out of the pee hole was no more than a couple of degrees warmer than the lake water... not warm at all.. and it runs fine, but it seems to not go past a certain rpm... almost like it's bogged down or somehow underpowered. Now I know this same boat would have no issues getting on plane with my '97 Johnson 15hp 2-stroke, but this 10yr newer 25hp EFI merc could not get my buddy and I on plane now matter what we did. It does not stall at any point, which is odd... as that would lead me to think it was a fuel issue... it just simply has not enough power under load. Any ideas what it might be? Thanks in advance!!

Excellent video. Will definitely pay more attention to my fuel system. I use ethanol-free gas, but if I recently got an engine, don't know what the previous owner did. It never ceases to amaze me what parts might be missing. I just got one that had no gasket on the bottom lower unit drain plug. Which may have actually saved it from worse damage by enabling water to drain out before tank testing, as opposed to simply not having changed the lower unit oil in ages.
Dear Boat guy really great video I'm learning so much from you , I have a question the first and third cylinder was not firing , and you took the reading of the compression it was good , how did you get the other cylinder to work did you replaced the sparkplug or the coils.
My 20 HP outboard doesn't idle which makes putting the boat into the trailer a wet endeavor. Towards this end Iv'e checked the points, cleaned them and set the correct gap at 0.020", checked the spark plugs' gap at 0.030" and checked the throttle pickup point which might be off but close to where the pickup point is. I checked the compression cold/cold today at 100 psi even. In 2003 after an overheat going upriver in the San Juan River in Nicaragua, the cylinder walls were scratched. However, I kept the motor running once or twice a year. The compression was at in the top cylinder #1 at 108 psi and in bottom cylinder #2 at 105 psi. The workshop manual states that it should be at 115 psi to 125 psi. Is this the swan song for this motor? Should I replace the powerhead for a spare one that I bought in 2004? The motor has been run out of stabilized gasoline and fogged properly to ascertain its operation on the next season. However, I haven't run it since 2008 until last week. I took my two sons and a friend it to a lake (some 4 hour drive from home each way) and it was hard to start but easier the more we used it! Your input is highly valuable!
Great stuff. One question: if the middle cylinder is working with the same gas (polluted or not) as the other non functioning 2 cylinders, why assume the problem is the fuel administration and not a spark problem? Lost here. Please help.
Just found your site. I have a 1993 Merc Mariner 75 hp that runs like a champ but the alarm comes and goes. I have good water pumping and keep the oil topped out. The float magnet came off and started the first alarm. I pulled it out and used a oil resistant gasket sealer to glue it back then zip tied it to the retainer but left about 1/4" gap between them. Appears to use very little oil but that alarm is driving me crazy
Great Video! Last year I learned about bullshit E-15 gas. I barely take boat out, when mechanic told me about I thought he was bull shitting me. Was driving me crazy ran at low speed gave it gas it bog down bulb would collapse. 5 bucks a gallon non ethanol now and have to drive 20 miles to get it. Should of titled E-10 or E-15 gas wrecking old out board motors. Thank you. Had I seen your channel I saved a lot of cash at Marina.
Very informative video. I just came across one of those grey gas lines the other day and saw that clear lining inside. I was wondering what the heck that was in there for.
I saw a motorcycle rider on a trail ride blow the carb out with compressed air at a fuel stop - cleaned the jets immediately - bike ran great directly after. Fast way to troubleshoot - blew air down the supply line to the carb.
I really appreciated your video. I have this exact outboard. I know this was 4 years ago but it would be great if you could state what you think the problem was since you didn't really find any issues. What do you think kept the two cylinders from firing. Wa it clogged jets???
The carbs don't have to be obviously plugged to be a problem. I had a yamaha that would not rev and everything looked open and fine in the carbs. After checking everything else I went back to the carbs and found just a little discoloration in the float bowls and around the clear jets so I cleaned them again and put it back together and it worked great.
This video was great 👍 very informative and detailed 👍 great job buddy...l start my 40 hp Yamaha every two weeks and keep it running great ,👎 no needs to be working on their boat at the ramp...
Another great video. Thanks man. I met you in the trailer store on 66st the other day. Good luck with the air boat. Keep the videos coming you are good at them.
Small clarification offered. IF you have auto gas with ethanol in it, you can have water in the fuel that will disolve into the alchohol and will not settle out into the bottom of the glass jar. So of course make sure NON Ethanol Gas is used always with 2 stroke engines.
EXCELLENT VIDEO. MY Yamaha F115TLR is not pulling water with "Ear Muffs" placed over intake. No stream from water pump check vent when motor is running. Do I need to replace the impeller, or could there be a problem with the thermostat? Thank you...
We are really enjoying the learning process you are giving us while we try to fix an older boat motor. We have a 1977 Johnson 25 hp motor, that we are trying to find some parts to get it pumping water again. It does start, but I can't seem to find the Impeller and the water pump housing too. Do you have any suggestions on where we can find the parts to get our motor running again? I am looking thru your videos and am looking for some links in them too. Thanks for the great videos for we are really learning a lot from your videos and enjoy them too. Thanks again.
We did get our motor running. We replaced the impeller and hubby adjusted the throttle and it sounds like a new one. I think we will keep it!!! lol Thanks for all the great information on fixing our boat motor, and we will be watching your videos to see how we can keep our motor running for a long time.
make sure the plastic cup that you use to check for water in your fuel can handle gas as some plastics will melt when exposed to gas or better to use a glass jar
The worst of the good work and the other,is the way to get the best from the tip. Another option is to be done by the black end of the lead on the plug. The cylinder head gasket set up the open position for the delay. Gas is not flowing through the archway at the end and the powder.
Hey boat guy! Love the videos, super helpful. I have myself a 1975 evinrude 25. Replaced spark plugs, ignition coils, and cleaned out and serviced the magneto, but I’m still not getting any spark! Any recommendations? Thanks!
I did not see you check each plug separately, or check each plug on the one cylinder that is working. Did you find the plugs bad or the plug leads faulty ?

You really done some great video over the years, have helped me be sharper as well.Thanks...
Good video mate like the detail of it all .
Nice of you to put this on here. Lots of clueless, penniless people out there. Boats are tough on the wallet.
Dan Hillman boat stands for bring on another thousand!!
Fast way to troubleshoot - blew air down the supply line to the carb.
carb trouble, caused by a old gas line. cleaned up the carbs and its good.
Love these engine videos bro. You do a good job at diagnosis. 💯👍🏼✅🇺🇸
Thank you for the info I've been working on a Mariner and I think that's what my problem is is the carburetors
This video was great 👍 very informative and detailed 👍 great job buddy...l start my 40 hp Yamaha every two weeks and keep it running great ,👎 no needs to be working on their boat at the ramp...
Excellent run through, Thank You!
Brian Wilson hhhh
Excellent instruction and explanations. Well done!
may I know how you learned those knowledges to repair outboard? it is amazing!
Good video covering the basics.
Another great video. Thanks man. I met you in the trailer store on 66st the other day. Good luck with the air boat. Keep the videos coming you are good at them.
Small clarification offered. IF you have auto gas with ethanol in it, you can have water in the fuel that will disolve into the alchohol and will not settle out into the bottom of the
glass jar.
I have a early 90s M90a tohatsu. These videos are priceless Can you make a video on a faulty fuel pump and what to look for?
So what was causing the 2 cylinder to not work..?
Just thank you so much. Just looking for a 2 stroke 30 hp 3 cylinder outboard . Have a 25 hp 2 stroke now
We are really enjoying the learning process you are giving us while we try to fix an older boat motor.
Twin cities outboard
We did get our motor running. We replaced the impeller and hubby adjusted the throttle and it sounds like a new one. I think we will keep it!!! lol Thanks for all the great information on fixing our boat motor, and we will be watching your videos to see how we can keep our motor running for a long time.
I have been watching several of your videos, thanks for making them, I need all the help I can ...
So it was basically the carb cleaning that did it in the end? Crud in the fuel blocking the jets?
make sure the plastic cup that you use to check for water in your fuel can handle gas as some plastics will melt when exposed to gas or better to use a glass jar
The worst of the good work and the other,is the way to get the best from the tip. Another option is to be done by the black end of the lead on the plug. The cylinder head gasket set up the open position for the delay. Gas is not flowing through the archway at the end and the powder.
Eric!.....U R a Genius my friend, great video 👍🏽
Hey boat guy! Love the videos, super helpful. I have myself a 1975 evinrude 25. Replaced spark plugs, ignition coils, and cleaned out and serviced the magneto, but I’m still not getting any spark! Any recommendations? Thanks!
excellent vid and explanation. Would have loved to see you clean and adjust the carbs.
Very informative videos, gives me a tool for my outboard.
Thanks heaps!
So what did I miss? Sparks good, compression good, carbs good, fuel good. What was the issue?
Very helpful. Saved the video for my eventual use.
I did not see you check each plug separately, or check each plug on the one cylinder that is working. Did you find the plugs bad or the plug leads faulty ?
So did you find out what's the reason #1 and #3 cylinders were not firing?
