    Nice work and presentation. I flip a few outboards too. Specialize in 1980's Honda 4 strokes - they are pretty much bulletproof. One thing that I do to give the buyer confidence and get top dollar is to pressure test the lower unit. You might have to make your own fitting to screw into the lower unit fill holes. Then use a bicycle pump to pump it up to around 10psi. Then soapy water to to check all the oil seals for any leaks. There's a lot of cash to be make on these old motors. I find that most of them have been sitting in grandpa's garage for many years and just need the carb cleaned, an impeller and a new fuel filter

      Hi I’d like some advice about an old Honda b100 that I picked up. When plugs are removed, I can’t seem to get any spark from them. I tried shooting some fuel down the carb and pulling with no signs of life. Is there a points ignition underneath the belt pulley? How do I remove that?

    Come to Minnesota - Land of 10,000 lakes and 500,000 boats. Lots of boats mean lots of boat engines. It also means a saturated market. Boats and engines are CHEAP… but they also resale cheap. Iv fixed a handful of those small outboards. Usually the Mercs piss a steady stream but I find the older Evinrude-Johnsons trickle. Looks like you had lots of water puking out the exhaust. Tell tail isnt super important. Since its on the exhaust exit anyways. I use a temp gun. Quick way is to blast about 5-6 psi back through the pisser. I delete them on my V6's.

    Most creative ask for subscribers I've seen in a while! You got me! Here's a question for you: if the motor fails either the compression test or spark test, what does that mean? Do you turn down buying it, or use that to negotiate a cheaper price? If you fix any that don't have compression or spark, I'd love to see a video on that too.

    • @BoatBusters
      @BoatBusters  2 месяца назад +2

      @@Lhopsecker Haha I appreciate that!! And those are great questions. If the motor fails to pass a compression test, I personally don’t buy it at all. Now somebody that’s into restoration for fun will likely be able to buy it for next to nothing with no compression, however to me this is just as much of a business as it is a hobby and the time spent rebuilding a powerhead is not worth it at all (and those parts are not cheap)… if the engine fails a spark test, I welcome that with open arms! It usually will let me negotiate a better deal and spark issues are not hard to fix when you know what to look for. Especially on small outboards like this one. My next video will have more details on diagnosing no spark!

    Great video! I have some experience working on those 15hp Evinrudes. I just recently restored one. Another issue with your tell tale could be the rubber grommets on the water tubes. Once you pull the power head you will see them. Be careful removing the bolts holding the water jacket cover on! They are only 1/4" bolts. $150. in my area of the Southeast might get you the gas tank! lol And I know that l'm late to the dance but I'd love to see you cleaning out the water jackets! Based on this video and the info given, as well as the no nonsense delivery I'm now a new sub! A few years ago I bought a used boat and 40 hp motor that was running great during the test ride. Unfortunately on my first outing something happened and it bogged and died rather quickly. It was about a late 80's Evinrude and to marine shops (one a friend) said that it wasn't worth fixing. I wound up buying another 40 from a guy that works on engines. He checked mine out and said the compression was good but the coils were gone and most of the wires were melted. He checked to bore, rings and pistons and everything looked good so he cleaned that part up and put in new rings, coils and wiring as well as new impeller and rebuilt the carb. It was less than $800 parts and labor. So I now have a spare!

    To help free dirt and debris in the cooling system in older o/b engines, we always started the engine, let it run for a minute or two to heat up the thermostat, then we’d shoot a couple short blasts of compressed air into the end of telltale tube. This reverse pressure that happens when doing this often loosens debris enough that cooling water can pump it free, allowing water to circulate properly through the system. Hope this helps!

      @@BoatBusters usually if you give it a real short zap of air, that did the trick. It’s important that you see evidence of water circulating and exiting upper or lower drains though. If no water is seen pumping, shut the engine down and shoot air. Then restart to see if you get flow. Don’t let the engine run long without evidence of descent flow.
