Everyone wants to be an auto mechanic or a diesel mechanic these days... Also you can tell it took him a while to go through these, he has a different shirt on for almost every motor.
You are so right... I do my own repairs but when I do need a professional with a Mercury computer its like finding a unicorn... One thing tho lots of Engines run great on the stand but when in the water its a different story...
Hey man thanks for making these videos, I used the information I learned here to repair my Grandpa's 79 Johnson 15hp and I've put 10 issue free hours on it. Glad to see a new post.
Nice! I learned to work on outboards recently from a Johnson 15HP aswell, great motors, mine is a 1997. Needed a backyard rebuild due to being sized but I just pulled the engine covers off including the head and cleaned the cylinder bores with scotch bright and used gasket goo with the old head gasket and it’s good as new, runs great and starts everytime
Love this channel. No long drawn out monologues and watching the same bolt being unscrewed for ten minutes. Just “here this, let’s do that, then do this, and look what we got” Brilliant format that others could benefit from copying ✌️🇬🇧
He is back and it’s awesome to see !! I was telling my wife last month it was top channel out there and have not seen or heard a video in forever ! Thank you for the content and welcome back is right !!!
I sure am glad to see you back on here. You were the reason I bought and older boat that needed restored. It took me 2 years but now I have a really great boat that runs great and is fun for my family.
My buddy has the same Mercury 40 - 2Stroke. Bought it new and it's still going strong. Just replaced the plugs after 20 years! Those are bulletproof motors.
Not sure if shit like this is easy or I’m just not mechanically inclined but I’m always amazed on how much knowledge this guy has when it comes to getting these motors running.
I like your methodology. How you go through each one of the motors with simple tests to find out if they'll run. Very wise. Looks like a good business model
Man ain't that the truth. I took my boat to a "trusted " mechanic. He used crap china carb kit that the gaskets swelled. Not even a year old carb rebuild. I bought exact oem parts and have had no problems after I did it myself. Oh and he kept pushing back my turnaround for over 6 months until I threatened to pick it up out of his yard. I hate that guy.
Brings back alot of memories... I reconditioned marine engines/power heads and drives(machine shop) during the winter for the spring... had a tractor with a modified 3 point Hitch to carry two large outboards into a 200 gallon test tank with dyno machines.... had all the local salvage yards put aside all marine engines and drives... I rebuilt alot of engines for other marine dealers... im old and retired now.
I love this channel, inspired me to work on outboard, I fixed a seized Johnson 15HP, needed a backyard rebuild ( no new parts ) and it runs good as news. I wish I could buy outboard from auction like you do but I can’t seem to find any where here in Australia
@@jeremiah-om7zl I agree. Only two shops south of Key Largo will even touch a two stroke. Anecdotally, I have heard from mechanics that they just don't command the revenue that four strokes do. That being said, I think that every shop around Jacksonville will eagerly take in a 2 stroke for work. Long live the 2 stroke blue smoke!
100 % correct. Because they falling apart, not because they are hard to work on. Also, people think they going to get a brand new 2stroke motor back, not even a brand new 4stroke e Mercury goes a whole year without 1 issue.😅 In other words you fix 1 thing another thing breaks. I messed with oil gussler for years till I got my 300 Suzuki, nevermore. Best thing a boat person can do these days, get themselves a new Suzuki.
24:00 Old Yamaha 2-strokes are incredible, they just run despite their age, I replaced my 75hp Evinrude for a old 50hp Yamaha temporarily, I picked it up for about 400 bucks and I just had to change the gear oil, lube the cylinders, give it a new impeller and replace the plugs and that was it, ran great but struggled to idle for long periods of time
I say that idling for long period or slow trolling with some tilt is hard on them and wears out seals. Always good to goose it a bit now and then and get the oil up and flowing.
I’ve done my Merc 200 twice and I’m not doing it a third! Not because I can’t, because it’s a turd to do and I’m disabled and I’ve sold my ski boat 😂😂😂
Well the whole point if designing them like that is to make it easy to change it out, both the spark plugs and the lower units... if you know what you are doing.
Always great to see old items get new life. Too many people just buy new and toss a perfectly good items in the trash. Such a waste. Might want to put a few of those mats that absorb oil but not water under the engines when you work on them. You don’t want to get the ground oily and greasy as it tracks that stuff everywhere. The oil also might enter the ground water if you have a well. A few of those mats will help greatly and they keep working when wet with water. Thanks for sharing, very interesting.
