  • A digital multi meter is strongly recommended. The Fieldpiece SC260 is my favorite. (ebay) This is a general look at the electrical part of the PT&T system on an OMC outboard motor. This general setup will be similar to all this era outboard motors. The advice applies to all motors. If your trim motor runs but nothing happens, check the fluid in the reservoir. Mine uses Dextron Automotive transmission fluid. Look yours up. It will be listed on the net somewhere. Also remember, the press. relief valve which is that screw on the right side. If it's not tight, the system won't pressurize and the motor will not move. Make sure that your motor is not seized on the tilt tube as well. I put a nice stainless steel one on this motor a few years ago. You should be able to unscrew that relief screw a turn or 2 and lift the motor by grabbing it by the skeg below the prop. If you can't, you will need to cure that issue 1st. Remember, if in doubt, clean all the electrical connections and try to find all connectors. Those are the weakest points in any electrical circuit. Boating season is rapidly approaching! Good luck. If you want to help me with my retirement, please consider donating to my retirement fund. There’s a {$} sort of symbol up there on the right or a “thanks” button.. Pressing that button activates the Super Thanks and allows folks to donate, or Buy Me a Coffee: buymeacoffee.c..., or here is a link to my Paypal account where you can send me whatever amount you might want. www.paypal.com.... Any amount will be greatly appreciated. It would be great to be able to actually buy a project that’s not on it’s last legs, or have to rely on whatever I can salvage. Thanks for watching either way.
    Have a great day. Keep in mind, if I can do it, you probably can too.

    Thank you for this video. I just got towed off lake due to trim not going down. Because of video I found out it was relays and have some on the way. Thanks again

      Sorry for the late reply but... in case you did not know, there is a screw on the right side that you can loosen to bypass the trim system, releasing the pressure and allowing you to move the motor up or down. It takes a flat screwdriver and is the standard lefty loosey, righty tighty. You loosen it to release the pressure, move the motor to where you want it, and then tighten the screw to basically hold the motor in that position.When you get back to dry land, you can do the same to lift the motor for trailering. Tightening the screw sort of locks it in place. Good luck.

    Thanks a ton, I couldn't for the life of me trace the wires back to the trim relays on my Evinrude 115 after both up and down just stopped working. Now I know where to start cleaning terminals and checking voltage. Great video

      Glad to hear it. I figured I might as well share what I figured out. As my 1st aviation boss used to say: "if some dummy could build it, you can figure out how to fix it". Once you know how it's supposed to work, the rest is just tinkering. Good luck. Got to keep these old guys going.

      Did you ever get it working? I’m having the exact same problem. I’m not trying to change the motor unless it’s absolutely required

    • @krishamm2605
      @krishamm2605 11 месяцев назад

      @@malikcyp2709 nope. It seems like some wires got chewed in some random place on the motor. I traced them and found that I lost power somewhere on the motor. So I cut into the wiring harness near the transom and just hot wired the power trim straight to the battery, and installed a battery master disconnect switch.

    You have saved me from going through and searching. Great video. I have the exact motor in a 150. I'll still need to verify my problem isn't that I know I'm missing the 20amp fuse that you showed that said you blew. Mine will trim up but not down. We will see when I get home. Thanks agajn!

      Thanks. I tried installing a momentary rocker switch on the console to cheap out but it did not work. The trim would randomly go to full up while underway. I'm going to bite the bullet and buy the correct trim switch with it's factory harness. That way at least I should be able to eliminate it as a problem source. Put myself in a known situation and all that. My biggest problem is that so many other things are sucking up my time that I don't get to use this guy any where near enough. Non-use is the #1 cause of maintenance issues by far. Especially for boats. We're stuck on land due to the trim issue, a "recent" problem with the cooling system, and the fact that the transom is mush. I've already replaced the stats, but that non-use issue plays hell on them especially. Got to pull 'em again to check on them. The transom will be an interesting journey. Thanks again and good luck. Got to keep these things in the water where they belong.

    Hey, I came across your video to see how my throttle cable is suppose to connect. Does your cable need to curve to get onto the pin? I ask because it causes the cable to bind and I can't return my old cable or new cable to idle anymore.

    Looks like you spent all your money on glue and glued your boat together… But sometimes us poor folks gotta do what we gotta do

      Yes. Lots of glue. But the most important materiel I used was Love. Lots and lots of Love. 32 years of Love. He's only 54 years young. I figure there's another 50 in there. And yes, I'm pretty dumb. And stubborn. But mostly dumb.

      @@dereksuperstrong1210 Ah yes, I remember them well. I grew up in the era of the Welcraft Konas. Action marine. Checkmates. The nose of a Hydra Sport is akin to the nose of a Fountain. Very distinctive. Worth keeping on the water in my opinion. I was openly admitting I am dumb. You know what they say: a boat is a hole in the water surrounded by fiberglass in these instances, into which you pour money. I've caught a thousand Florida Lobsters in my old beater. You know what, it;s not the cost of the boat that matters. I have infinite pleasurable memories over 30 years in this thing. I really hate to give up on what works. I don't know what I'd do if I could afford a new boat. Probably buy a bigger old boat. Like I said. I'm pretty dumb. But I enjoy the hell out of making old stuff part of me. I've been asked, " what happens when it breaks down on you?". "I fix it. Duh." Kinda like when someone tells me they need to buy a "new" car. Theirs keeps breaking down on them. So fix it I say. Jeez, some people...

    My 88 doesn't have solenoids. Ugh

    • @teammudshark6894
      @teammudshark6894  5 дней назад

      That's weird. You should get your eyes on a service manual. You might be able to find one online. You might even try to search "88 OMC PT&T system" in google and ck the images. Sometimes pages from service manuals are displayed.You just have to blown them up to read them. I'm not sure how that system could work without them in some form. Maybe in a module at that point? I'd be interested in how it works out. Good luck.

      Do you have a big motor without PTT. Power trim and tilt? The 1st motor I had on my boat was a 1981 V4 without it. Very rare as most larger motors came with it for obvious reasons. Either way, what do you need help with? The usual setup is just a lever on the side that you push one way or the other to unlock the position. You usually have to lift the motor a bit to unload the lever assy to get it to move. If it's up, lift a little, flip the lever down toward the back and it should "unlock" the motor and allow it to drop. Do it a favor though and hang on to the lower unit and gently let it down. You don't want any banging. You have to set the trim pin to where the motor will need to be once you are planned off. That's why it's way easier to operate a boat with PTT. You leave the trim pin all the way in the front hole so you can trim the motor in farther to plane off sooner/easier and then trim the motor up for cruising. With no PTT, you set that pin and you just have to wait as the boat nose comes up and fights it's way over onto plane. In little boats, you will see the operators up and leaning forward to help get on with it. To raise the motor with manual tilt, you flip the lever up and forward and lift the motor by the lower unit. When it gets to it's locking position you should hear it click as I believe the linkage is spring loaded and will snap over by itself. So, I hope that helps, if not let me know what specific motor and issue you are having and I'll give it go. Thanks and good luck.
