- These videos are from a September 11 1970 half hour television performance Graham and David did for the BBC.
It was right after CSNY had finished their famous...or infamous... four way street summer tour. with stories of epic melt downs and cosmic feedings between them all, the all star endeavor which had only began two years prior had all but imploded on itself.
Fortunately, all of the guys didn't abandon their relationships all together. Neil recruited Stephen, David, and Graham for backing vocals on After the Gold Rush and Harvest. Crosby invited, among other amazing musicians, Nash, and Young to sing and play on his consummate album If I Could Only Remember My Name.
(Interestingly, of all the musicians David invited to play on his album: Nash, Young, Jerry Garcia,Phil Lesh, Mickey Hart,Bill Kreutzmann, Jorma Kaukonen, Joni Mitchell, Grace Slick, David Freiberg, Paul Kantner, Jack Casady, Gregg Rolie, and Michael Shrieve...missing was Stephen Stills)
Of all the members of CSNY David and Graham's relationship seemed to be the one that stayed most friendly. In these videos you can really see how jovial and genuinely humorous they were with each other and with their audience. not to mention their majestic vocal blending. (the two part harmonies, which sound like five part, on Guinnevere and Song With no Words are particularly mind blowing)
If you dig this flavor of Crosby and Nash i would recommend finding a copy of their 10/10/1971 live recording Another Stoney Evening if you haven't already.
---------------------------------------- --------
This is the last song in the BBC performance; Nash asks Crosby to sing Traction in the Rain from his album If I Could Only Remember My Name.
---------------------------------------- --------
"[Following the break up] Crosby and Nash embarked on a successful acoustic tour accompanied only by their own guitars and piano, captured for the document Another Stoney Evening.
On tour, Nash and Crosby rediscovered the joy they had felt with CSN at first, minus the egotistic in-fighting that had made the last CSNY shows so difficult. That enthusiasm led to the studio for their first album as a duo, a mix of abstract introspection from Crosby and concise pop tunes from Nash prosaically entitled Graham Nash David Crosby, which peaked at #4 on the pop album chart."
David Crosby has the voice of the angel If you like this you *must* listen to the recorded version of "If I Only Could Remember My Name". Crosby's "solo" album w/guests including Jerry Garcia ~ Joni Mitchell ~ Neil Young. It's a musical masterpiece.
Not to mention members of Jefferson Airplane...
Best album ever..
Kgal, a super session, indeed
You are absolutely right. It’s a 💎
I have an original pressing, and I play it all the time. It's such a gift to humanity
Them 60's BBC sound techs knew their shit.👍
yes, this sounds, unusually good?
Came here after hearing the news of his passing today. This was always one of my favourite songs in terms of the ratio of how unknown it is to how good it is. He had one of the most beautiful voices of the 20th century. RIP David
Agree. Achingly beautiful song. I come back here often to hear this version. Better than the album version imho
Yes.
He was a nasty bastard....
Being a child of the 60's I had the pleasure of hearing many of these musicians in person and my life was changed forever. Crosby's voice and harmonies speak to my soul. He was a complex person and his music reflected that but underneath it all there was a feeling of beauty and love. RIP ❤
CROSBY IS ONE OF THE MOST AMAZING SONGWRITERS, MUSICIAN, SINGER THAT EVER WALKED THE EARTH
Absolutely correct ❤
I fell in love with this song the first time I heard it, and have never fallen out of love with it. What a treat to hear this live version with just Crosby and Nash and their guitars. David Crosby had such a breathtakingly beautiful voice. So long, David, and thanks for all the fish.
Having David Crosby in the world is a great thing...
What a beautiful gift to us all!
when he goes it'll be on my mind nearly all the time
I’ll agree but only when/if he’s singing; he’s a bit of an ass when he’s not.
It sure is. Hoping to see him in concert. I missed his last visit to Tanglewood.
I agree, I did see him a couple years ago with my daughter... totally worth it, I love his old/new music!
We'll miss you forever.
It was raining when I heard.
Anyone who knows anything about music knows this is fucking brilliant!
The artistry in this song - live - blows me away. Restraint, passion, delicacy - and two of the most gifted musicians of my (or any) generation sharing this with us.
Have always loved this song. His voice angelic.
Farewell David your music gave us so much RIP SIR
There will never be another like David. Thanks for all the great music. RIP😢
He is closer to the Andromeda Galaxy than the River Thames in this video, but what an incredible talent.
Imagine these guys around a campfire.
Crosby - out of his nut - pulls out this gem.
Awesome vocal
RIP David, your music soothed my soul
When Croz sings at the end about "getting out", remember that he struggled with thoughts of suicide after the death of Christine Hinton in 1969. A beautiful performance of a simply beautiful song.
This version was the most beautiful in my opinion. One of my favorites. Thanks.
Thank you for this.
Thank you
Crosby is an extremely underrated singer
No he's not, undervalued in the extreme sense yes, but not underrated, but I know what your gettin' at!!
who ever underrated him???
The best Voice of that era...maybe any era...
If I Can Only Remember My Name.... Still remains his greatest work....
I don’t feel like summer is complete until I’ve played this beautiful song at least a couple of times!
An amazing song from an amazing album. I can't believe how beautifully David sings it here.
Thank you!
Gorgeous ❣️
He sings like velvet. 💖
David's voice in this song is so clean and clear. These word's are sooo deep!
It absolutely is on If I Can Only Remember My Name. Laura Allan plays the autoharp on it and if you think sends you to heaven... just listen to that one. That album is indeed a masterpiece... timeless, soulful, beautiful.
I love the look David gives Graham just before 1 minute in. Respect to Graham Nash, it must have been an almost insurmountable task keeping David Crosby focused at any point that entire decade...Wonderful song.
They live in 2 different levels, worlds....
He might of had undiagnosed adult ADHD. Who knows
The album if I could only remember My name by David Crosby was phenomenal everyone played on it!
This was always the most sublime song among all the great songs and arrangements on 'If Only I could Remember my Name'. It knocked me out the very first time I heard it back in the heady days of 1971 and I never tire of listening to it over 40 years later.
Not many songs i've listened to have been able to push me to the verge of tears like this one.
@@bradley4171 And "Laughing" from the same album.
I read an interview on David Crosby and he said he was high for every gig he ever played.
And every album he ever made.
and....?
Am I the only one listening to this ...... (lost for words).
Jesus. Rip david you left us many beautiful pieces to remember you by.
RIP Crosby... Such a sad moment now...
Two acoustic guitars have never been put to better use. Stunning doesn't begin to describe it.
What a pure, clean, beautiful voice.
Thanks Mikael from Opeth - R.I.P. Mr. Crosby
God rest your beautiful soul. RIP.
Yes! I believe this song is about the deep pain of loss, his girlfriend to a car accident! Devastating loss and pain...😌🎼♥️🎶Great tune..✌😌
This entire BBC performance by Crosby and Nash is the best vocal harmonies I’ve heard live, ever. It really captures the two in a great place in their songwriting collaboration together. This surpasses the studio recordings, and the nuisances you get to see between the two both in playing and personally is really special to see. I’m a fan of Stills and Young, but the dynamic with just Crosby and Nash playing these songs carries so much better.
Rest easy music man.
I'd been and still listen to everything Poco since 1969. Paul became my Hero after John Lennon. I fell in love with his songwriting and that voice, NO ONE sounded like him. Freida?, was that you in the inside booklet on " A Good Feelin' to Know "? Doug, way up in Green Bay, WI
words cannot explain how beautiful this song is to me!
David has a way of putting instrumental perfection and lryical perfection and vocal perfection together
Just when I am moved and most taken by his guitar work he slathers on butter and syrup
in the form of his lyrics and amazing vocal capabilities to the stack of his guitar pancakes
and he takes me again
there are better analogies
but its morning here
david is easily breakfast lunch and dinner for the mind and soul for me
I watched the close-up on 3:56 about ten times. He enters a different realm there. Blows my mind.
Pristine! So beautiful!
31 years, to the day, before 911, neither David nor Graham were even 30 years old yet. This brings tears to my eyes. Just beautiful!
That jacket should be in a museum somewhere by now...
Rest in Peace, David.
One of the most beautiful friendship stories of contemporary music. Those voices were meant to sing together
This brilliant album still resonates as one of my favorites. TY David Crosby.
My favourite song of his. So sad to hear he's gone.
I miss the 70's. Times goes by...
Superb. I love these recordings with just the two of them. David Crosby has a voice like liquid gold, as someone else here has said 'the voice of an angel'.
Jesus. Im knocked on my ass by this stuff. Two blokes, two acoustics, two stools, and some kinda freaking magic going on. wtf?? I gotta listen to this a few more times. Thanks.
What a voice, what a song. David Crosby rules.
Classic David. Wow, just wow.
An angel and an accountant... this poor Nash doesn’t get it... he’s missing the wings! And David has a funny way to show him! His voice is closer to prayer, than just song... love him!
sends shivers down your spine,'' if i could only remember my name''is david crosbys first lp and is just superb, this song is track 2 side 2[lp]
Simply mesmerising.
Just fantastic, this whole set. You;ve got to hand it to the BBC as well for the great sound quality, and it's the same for some others they did around 1970 - Joni Mitchell, Neil Young etc. They were all recorded very well for the period. Beautiful.
first time ive listened to this what a singer beautiful song class act
RIP David. You got out.
I’ve watched this one a million times. I love you David. Rest in peace ❤
something else great artists david crosbys voice is so special
This song actually takes my breath away
What a voice he once had when he was young, hard living took its toll, somehow he’s still with us today….
So much better than the album version ~ music to take you out of your life for a few precious moments!
I just have to listen to this every couple of days, so beautiful.
Just spent the last little while sipping my morning coffe and listening to all of these beautiful clips as the sun came up...what a beautiful way to start the day. I cannot thank you enough for putting these out here.
Great tune! Super treasure to have these videos, thank you!
A Martin D45 ....David Crosby in full flight in his prime...truly one of his best songs...off the best solo album any of the members CSNY ever did...in my humble opinion of course....😐
Oh, sublime. My heart ♥. THANK YOU, spirit of David Crosby.
Incredible.
One of the great voices,
Sweet Songbird David Crosby IS🎶a child of God🎶🎸 SWEET harmonies 👼 🎶His journey and angelic voice are amazing👼God’s grace💜is amazing. Croz- beautiful artist-always 🎶 God bless🌹
Oh my, so beautiful!
wow the sound of those D 45's and of course crosby's voice - in the early seventies in LA crosby was just known around town by the other famed musicians - as "The Voice"
This album was such a revelation. Hope your singing with the angels somewhere, much love.
One of the most beautiful songs ever...
in a lake , an endless horizon surrounded by grass , trees and mountains , its quiet and the sun is warm on your face
David Crosby is a helluva drug...
What superb talents they both are. So glad David Crosby is still around in spite of himself. Goosebumps indeed Davy Roderick.
so beautiful i weep every time.
Brother, it's on my mind almost all the time too
One of my all time favorite concerts. Rip Mr. Crosby.
I only ever heard the most commercialized CSNY stuff. But, always liked Nash's solo album For Beginners. This is really beautiful. Thanks. Crosby truly does have an amazing voice and expression.
*David makes indiscernible gibberish noises*
Graham: he's just decided to do it I think
Hahaha!
That’s about the only song I can play on acoustic guitar but man I love playing it
Laura Allan, RIP 🕊: Shortly after returning to the states, with her new individual sense of the world, she had the opportunity to meet up with the likes of Joni Mitchell, David Crosby & Jackson Browne. She began to make musical instruments at this time with early mentor, Joellen Lapidus and was allowed by her parents to travel to the Big Sur Folk festival where Lapidus sold Joni Mitchell her first dulcimer.
A little later on she was invited to play on David Crosby’s first solo album … Allan’s picture appears on this classic. Her Zither playing on “Traction on the Rain” is the first thumbprint in vinyl for this bright young talent who would spend the next two and a half decades dedicating her life to the pursuit of creativity through her music, song writing and artistic achievements.
These men put Angels to Shame.
This is almost too Beautiful.
The range, the acoustics. So PURE.
It's Beyond healing!!!!!
Thank you Mr Bill Graham!!!!!
Oh wow, how haven't I come across this video until now, it's been up for 6 years.
just saw this on VH1 classic .... have seen many times.
beautiful, beautiful tune . . . . .
Graham was always looking out for David. Was a love that was obvious in the looks that were sent and the harmonies only love can reciprocate. Best noise I ever heard in this vein gog
The harmonic duo is playing top-of-the-line Martin D-45's,
just like Stephen and Neil did.
Right on! David believes Martin is best.. I have to agree.. Then again David and Graham could have played any type and sounded supreme!
CANCION DE SU ALBUM IF I COULD ONLY REMEMBER MY NAME DE 1971. No.206 DE 1001 ALBUMES FAMOSOS
A voice of an angel, David Crosby
Just beautiful ethereal, my god.
'69 & '70 was a special time for sure !
It certainly was the best. Best music ever. Egalitarian, equality, jobs, . We had all the nice things
They had such a rapport right from the start in the early days - they just really mesh together. It's a pity they aren't together now as there seems to be a rift. I hope time will heal. I hope I can see them perform one day.
Doesn't get any better than this, now does it?
Outstanding!
Stunning
REST IN PEACE LEGEND
