So sad to hear of David Crosby's passing away. He started out in the group the "Byrds" before becoming part of CS&N. I have always loved their sound & had their albums. They were one of the folk rock supergroups of the 60's-70's. David wrote & co-wrote some great songs such as "Eight Miles High", "Guinnevere", "Long Time Gone", "Wooden Ships", "Déjà Vu" etc.
These guys. The beauty of their voices and guitars together seemed so mysterious to me til now. Thanks, as always, for helping us to understand what's going on. Rest in Peace, David.

Good choice indeed but the most unusual Crosby song is one of his first, from 1964, The Airport Song. Stunning that the first time I heard it couldn't tell if it was a woman or a man. I've seen CSN & CSNY many times & the loss of David was so heartbreaking to me. I have a sister who's 11 years older than me & she introduced me to such great music. The same bands I saw as a kid are the same bands I'm still seeing in concert. That just shows how great this Era was for music. You will be missed David but your music will always live on. The music, hair, and cars from this era will never be matched. The music, creativity, lifestyle, the grind, working hard to make it. Free love, accidental branding genius, meant more then being rich & famous first.which made them more relatable to the average person. We struggled made what we had work where now my own kids worked to start out with things we worked years to get because of priority differences.

Well they all sold out to corporate tours and became capitalists. I grew up with them and like them but don't make them more than they are. Young people spend a fortune on being part of the music and entertainment cult. Go look at Springsteen concert prices. But yes CSN had some great music, I saw them in Saratoga circa 1977. Saw Dylan, Doobies, Fleetwood Mac, Three Dog Night, Leon Russell, etc. All good stuff

What a lovely Tribute you've given him too, not only through your knowledge and skill as a musician, but also through your genuineness as a man. One can clearly see the sparkle in your eyes, the joy and appreciation on your face, and can almost feel the subtle shift in your attention and the air escape your lungs as you FEEL the beauty of those vocal harmonies wrap themselves around you. Fil: That was a very nice break down of the song. I heard a sort of melancholy part, but I didn't realize it was the "detuning" of the string. I heard David detune his string in the beginning. It was FAST! He must have been a master of his guitar to know that by heart. He didn't even listen to it by strumming the strings! The singing was soft and melodic and harmonizing. The words were a love song? A stalking song? Or did the lady just leave and is being reminisced? It all goes together so well. They kept it together. I had no idea what a nice voice David Crosby had. David and Graham were so entrancing here. Their harmonies took me to another time and place. And that's what I would describe how I felt every time I heard Crosby, Stills and Nash sing. Having grown up listening to CSN, their music, with angelic harmonies and guitar, were a part of my DNA. How very fortunate I was to have seen Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young in 2002. I love this particular performance. They also performed one of David's earlier sailing songs Lee Shores. I have always been fascinated with how Graham, coming from a premiere British invasion band to David Crosby and Stephen Stills folkier somewhat American sounding environment, which ending up being the perfect musical marriage.
I think it’s one of the most beautiful songs ever written, it’s so wonderfully ethereal. I especially love the way the low E string sounds in the melody, it’s like the perfect note at just the right spot.
True singer/songwriters who were masters of their instruments and who could produce such magic for listeners is what I miss the most. I don’t think I fully appreciated their talents at the time; I thought music (and talent) like this would go on forever.
It's great to see and hear classic folk-rock performed by two of it's most notable artists. This song captures the zeitgeist of those times so perfectly. In the last 12 months, I discovered David Crosby's 4 last albums (Sky Trails, Here If You Listen, The Lighthouse, For Free) and kinda became a massive fan. Not being aware that he was ill, his death came as a shock.

I've seen David Crosby several times over the years starting with the Byrds. When my son took me to a CSN concert and I felt like they were playing just for me. It was an unforgettable experience. 💔Amazing tender moving performance by best friends. ♡ This September 11 1970 performance is near the first anniversary of the tragic death of Croz’s longtime girlfriend Christine Hinton, who was killed in a car accident on September 30, 1969, the same day the CSN debut album, which including Guinnevere, went gold. The second verse is written about Christine. At the Waldorf, SF concert, i attended, in 1983, he introduces Guinnevere: “Now, this is another one that we should be quiet about. This girl isn’t around anymore. And this is for her and this is for you chump changes. If you love anybody, if you got anybody you really love - think about it. Really love ‘em now as much as you can. Now. You don’t know how long you’re gonna have them, you know.” Graham: after Croz identified Christine’s body, "Croz never was the same.” CROZ: ”He’s right. I never was.” In a Rolling Stone interview, Crosby remarked: "That is a very unusual song, it's in a very strange tuning (EBDGAD) with strange time signatures. It's about three women that I loved. One of whom was Christine Hinton - the girl who got killed who was my girlfriend - and one of whom was Joni Mitchell, and the other one is somebody that I can't tell. I would love to know where that leather jacket with the fringe is right now! Also, ya know this song is done with a special tuning "the Croz" came up with. With this tuning and his playing you get lots of dissonance but it creates a haunting, ethereal feeling. I was lucky enough to see CSN live, in concert TWICE. The most memorable thing is their FLAWLESS harmonies! They blend so perfectly with NO auto-tune or sound tricks! By the way, NICE FINGER PICKING, PHIL! You use all your right hand fingers, except the pinky, of course, and your hand position looks very relaxed and natural!! NICE!!
Awesome performance! David is brilliant at separating his voice completely from his guitar, as if his hands were left knowing what to do while he wandered off to sing a song. His and Graham's vocals are like 2 orchestral instruments staying in sync, yet slightly drifting into 2 different areas only to meet up again. Let me just add that tuning your guitar differently is such a joyful thing. I've been playing for more than a half a century and only within the last couple years did I experiment with different tunings. It brings you into a whole new world. As always, great upload!

Such beautiful lyrics, intricate guitar work, with soft mesmerizing harmonics...God, this is beyond good! Crosby said he based the song on his relationships with 3 separate women utilizing the story of Guinevere and King Arthur. Try finding that level of artistry in any of the current day music offerings. Brilliant masterpiece with intellect, stellar musicianship, and romantic poetry ,just look at the lyrics..this just doesn't exist today. An artist who can think, play, sing and chew gum all at the same time! This did make me cry ,but it was a happy cry! Thank you Fil, I needed this.

CS&N (and later, Y) were THE soundtrack of my teen years. I was wondering which song you would pick, Crosby has so many masterpieces. I was lucky to see Crosby & Nash live in 1977 at the Hollywood Bowl. We are so lucky to have this music well recorded, so we can listen again at any time. "We have all been here before"
Thank you for this video, this helps to accept the loss of such a great musician, by showcasing his talent. I was born in 1957 and played CSNY albums daily, their music shaped the culture of my youth. I saw them at the Spectrum in Philadelphia. Losing David Crosby makes me feel so sad. Thank you for helping me understand why I heard such interesting tones in his voice! I wondered about that the other night when listening to the two last vocal tracks on his 71 album If Only I Could Remember My Name. They align every cell i n my body and give me chills!

One can clearly see the sparkle in your eyes, the joy and appreciation on your face, and can almost feel the subtle shift in your attention and the air escape your lungs as you FEEL the beauty of those vocal harmonies wrap themselves around you. Fil: That was a very nice break down of the song. I heard a sort of melancholy part, but I didn't realize it was the "detuning" of the string. I heard David detune his string in the beginning. It was FAST! He must have been a master of his guitar to know that by heart. He didn't even listen to it by strumming the strings! The singing was soft and melodic and harmonizing. The words were a love song? A stalking song? Or did the lady just leave and is being reminisced? It all goes together so well. They kept it together. I had no idea what a nice voice David Crosby had. Very sweet. Very charming very harmonious. Thank you for analyzing this video. It was a great performance. ❤

David and Graham were so entrancing here. Their harmonies took me to another time and place. And that's what I would describe how I felt every time I heard Crosby, Stills and Nash sing. Having grown up listening to CSN, their music, with angelic harmonies and guitar, were a part of my DNA. How very fortunate I was to have seen Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young in 2002. David, I hope you find your wooden ship, and sail to Rock Heaven ♥️

I love this particular performance. They also performed one of David's earlier sailing songs Lee Shores. I have always been fascinated with how Graham, coming from a premiere British invasion band to David Crosby and Stephen Stills folkier somewhat American sounding environment, which ending up being the perfect musical marriage.
I think it’s one of the most beautiful songs ever written, it’s so wonderfully ethereal. I especially love the way the low E string sounds in the melody, it’s like the perfect note at just the right spot.
True singer/songwriters who were masters of their instruments and who could produce such magic for listeners is what I miss the most. I don’t think I fully appreciated their talents at the time; I thought music (and talent) like this would go on forever.

In the last 12 months, I discovered David Crosby's 4 last albums (Sky Trails, Here If You Listen, The Lighthouse, For Free) and kinda became a massive fan. Not being aware that he was ill, his death came as a shock.
He really just got better and better and did his best work each time, right til the end. What a legacy.

I've seen David Crosby several times over the years starting with the Byrds. When my son took me to a CSN concert and I felt like they were playing just for me. It was an unforgettable experience. I don't play guitar, even so, it is very enjoyable to witness your expertise on analyzing our greats musically. As always, thank you. It's always difficult to process loss; especially of an era. 💔Amazing tender moving performance by best friends. ♡ This September 11 1970 performance is near the first anniversary of the tragic death of Croz’s longtime girlfriend Christine Hinton, who was killed in a car accident on September 30, 1969, the same day the CSN debut album, which including Guinnevere, went gold. The second verse is written about Christine. At the Waldorf, SF concert, i attended, in 1983, he introduces Guinnevere: “Now, this is another one that we should be quiet about. This girl isn’t around anymore. And this is for her and this is for you chump changes. If you love anybody, if you got anybody you really love - think about it. Really love ‘em now as much as you can. Now. You don’t know how long you’re gonna have them, you know.” Graham: after Croz identified Christine’s body, "Croz never was the same.” CROZ: ”He’s right. I never was.” In a Rolling Stone interview, Crosby remarked: "That is a very unusual song, it's in a very strange tuning (EBDGAD) with strange time signatures. It's about three women that I loved. One of whom was Christine Hinton - the girl who got killed who was my girlfriend - and one of whom was Joni Mitchell, and the other one is somebody that I can't tell. It might be my best song.” The first verse was for Nancy Ross, Croz’s girlfriend when he was with the Byrds. At the same ’83 concert, Croz said: Carry Me - a song of transcendence. It’s for Nancy. I would love to know where that leather jacket with the fringe is right now! Also, ya know this song is done with a special tuning "the Croz" came up with. With this tuning and his playing you get lots of dissonance but it creates a haunting, ethereal feeling. I was lucky enough to see CSN live, in concert TWICE. The most memorable thing is their FLAWLESS harmonies! They blend so perfectly with NO auto-tune or sound tricks! By the way, NICE FINGER PICKING, PHIL! You use all your right hand fingers, except the pinky, of course, and your hand position looks very relaxed and natural!! NICE!!
Awesome performance! David is brilliant at separating his voice completely from his guitar, as if his hands were left knowing what to do while he wandered off to sing a song. His and Graham's vocals are like 2 orchestral instruments staying in sync, yet slightly drifting into 2 different areas only to meet up again. Let me just add that tuning your guitar differently is such a joyful thing. I've been playing for more than a half a century and only within the last couple years did I experiment with different tunings. It brings you into a whole new world. As always, great upload!

Crosby said he based the song on his relationships with 3 separate women utilizing the story of Guinevere and King Arthur. Try finding that level of artistry in any of the current day music offerings. Brilliant masterpiece with intellect, stellar musicianship, and romantic poetry ,just look at the lyrics..this just doesn't exist today. Thank you for this video, this helps to accept the loss of such a great musician, by showcasing his talent. I was born in 1957 and played CSNY albums daily, their music shaped the culture of my youth. I saw them at the Spectrum in Philadelphia. Losing David Crosby makes me feel so sad. I hope there is massive artists tribute in the works.
