Crosby Nash BBC - Lee Shore (4 of 5)

  • These videos are from a September 11 1970 half hour television performance Graham and David did for the BBC.
It was right after CSNY had finished their famous...or infamous... four way street summer tour. with stories of epic melt downs and cosmic feedings between them all, the all star endeavor which had only began two years prior had all but imploded on itself.
Fortunately, all of the guys didn't abandon their relationships all together. Neil recruited Stephen, David, and Graham for backing vocals on After the Gold Rush and Harvest. Crosby invited, among other amazing musicians, Nash, and Young to sing and play on his consummate album If I Could Only Remember My Name.
(Interestingly, of all the musicians David invited to play on his album: Nash, Young, Jerry Garcia,Phil Lesh, Mickey Hart,Bill Kreutzmann, Jorma Kaukonen, Joni Mitchell, Grace Slick, David Freiberg, Paul Kantner, Jack Casady, Gregg Rolie, and Michael Shrieve...missing was Stephen Stills)
Of all the members of CSNY David and Graham's relationship seemed to be the one that stayed most friendly. In these videos you can really see how jovial and genuinely humorous they were with each other and with their audience. not to mention their majestic vocal blending. (the two part harmonies, which sound like five part, on Guinnevere and Song With no Words are particularly mind blowing)
If you dig this flavor of Crosby and Nash i would recommend finding a copy of their 10/10/1971 live recording Another Stoney Evening if you haven't already.
    ---------------------------------------- --------
"This is another one of David's sea songs.."
The girl with the long hair sitting in the left corner at about 1:18 is awesome. i dig.
    ---------------------------------------- --------
"[Following the break up] Crosby and Nash embarked on a successful acoustic tour accompanied only by their own guitars and piano, captured for the document Another Stoney Evening.
On tour, Nash and Crosby rediscovered the joy they had felt with CSN at first, minus the egotistic in-fighting that had made the last CSNY shows so difficult. That enthusiasm led to the studio for their first album as a duo, a mix of abstract introspection from Crosby and concise pop tunes from Nash prosaically entitled Graham Nash David Crosby, which peaked at #4 on the pop album chart."

I totally agree. And I was a vocal coach until had to quit due to health… plus a singer and pianist. I don’t say this lightly.. Crosby’s voice is just so pure and natural and UNUSUALLY beautiful. It’s a glorious voice and the world doesn’t even know that. Sad. But we do. 😉
I also agree about If I Could Only Remember My Name.
Listen to him singing lead on The Byrds track, Everybody’s Been Burned. It’s just too beautiful, it almost hurts.

Greatest high harmony in the history of rock music. Too bad the voice coexisted with a severely disharmonious personality that was the ruin of so many constructive relationships, including the one featured in this video, but far more importantly, with all members of The Byrds, a group of far greater significance, both talent-wise and in the grand scheme of American popular music, than CSNY.

The perfection of their voices is unmatched today. Considering the insanity and grief Crosby had been through at the time he wrote this -- Christine Hinton having died in a car crash. This must of been a bit of a balm on his soul.
Every time I listen to this song, I remember the peace I'd feel when I would be on the water. Late at night when you couldn't tell where the sky ended and the sea began -- There is a peace to be found that seems to not be anywhere else.....

and this is Lee Shore , music and lyrics David Crosby , here in is most glorious pure voice , I used to sing and play this song long ago. Still brings tears to my eyes . Such beauty.
Farewell David Crosby , Yumma .
    “Wheel gull spin and glide
You've got no place to hide
It's 'cause you don't need one
    All along the Lee Shore
Shells lie scattered in the sand
Winking up like shining eyes at me
    From the sea
    Here is one like sunrise
    Older than you know
It's still lying there, where some careless wave
    Forgot it long ago
    When I awoke this morning
    Dove beneath my floating home
Down below her graceful side in the turning tide
To watch the sea fish roam
And there I heard a story
From the sailors of the Sandra Marie
There's another island eight days' run away from here
    And it's empty and free
    From here to Venezuela
    There's nothing more to see
Than a hundred thousand islands flung like jewels upon the sea
    For you and me
    Sunset smells of dinner
Women are calling at me to end my tales
But perhaps I'll see you the next quiet place
    I furl my sails”

The date of this performance, 9/11/1970, was on my 11th birthday, lol! It would only be 2 years until 4-Way Street became essential to me as I began to form into a woman from a girl. I listened to Deja Vu a lot too and a little later came Stephen Still's album, Illegal Stills. I still listened avidly when it was just CSN but I always listened to Neil Young too. The music of all of these brothers influenced my consciousness early in life and I've loved their music like personal anthems ever since. Actually, the songs are more than personal anthems, they were often lifelines. Truly. And I thank them and wish them health and joy in their golden years.

Ahhh, this sounded so gooood among the Redwoods by the lake.
At least half the people at the campground wanted to hear it again and again...
Wooden music as Levi calls it. 'Perfect' does just fine for me.
Thank you David, for sharing some wondrous facets of your Soul
I hope Heaven is filled with these sounds

See you in the next quiet place, Mr Crosby. You have furled your sail for the last time on this Earth and will be so missed. Thanks for sharing your music with all of us. Thank you especially for this song, that transports me to another place every time I listen.

This song describes the life so many of us thought we would someday lead, but that time and the real world slowly but steadily stole from us...

Absolutely beautiful. I saw Crosby and Nash almost exactly a year after this, in '72. Magical. Crosby is a great composer and lyricist and Nash such a perfect compliment. Saw Crosby a couple years ago. His voice is incredible still. His "If Only I could Remember My Name" is a desert island disc for me. The Cameron Crowe documentary on Crosby, "Remember My Name" is a very good trip down memory lane to the founding of CSN and and of course his troubles. God Bless both these great musicians who have provided so much joy to so many.

You often see pure amazement on their faces in these videos at the soudn that THEY are making together! They amaze themselves and take JOY in it...it's a beautiful thing!

The groups from the 60s and early 70s were masters if melody and harmony. This performance is a prime example. Hope there's a return to this type of song making and singing. Makes Jack White type stuff sound like fingernails on a blackboard.

Their voices went-so-perfectly-together, to create the most beautiful vocal-harmonies, we have ever captured on record. oNe LovE from NYC

Crosby said he used to go to sea to dry out and clean up... it's why many sailors went out in the old days . It takes a pretty big person to brave the ocean in a small boat. Granted that Mayan (Crosby's schooner), was designed and built by John Alden, who knew a thing or two about boat deisgn. But you never know what you're gonna run into out there. Thank you for posting this, it 's always been one of my favorites.
