Alan is an excellent villain because everything he says is a half-truth, making him incredibly appealing and convincing to a wide spectrum of people-from full-blown conspiracy theorists to those who are just a little skeptical. That is, he isn’t a reckless, bumbling dipshit; he is actually quite an intelligent man (who knows everything he is saying is nonsense). This bodes well for him and his ability to manipulate others. If you really parse what he says throughout the movie, a lot of it isn’t wholly outlandish and has some merit to it. He is a guy who ostensibly doesn’t know what he is talking about at all, or so the CDC would have you think, yet he actually gets a few things right. This ends up solidifying his amassed following and keeps the viewer questioning their own assessment of him throughout the movie. Just as an example, he was the first one to bust Dr. Cheever who was, in fact, exploiting insider knowledge for personal interests. In this way, Alan wins over many psychologically vulnerable people and cements his credibility, making him all the more dangerous. He is the archetypal false prophet. What Alan espouses can’t simply be dismissed on its face; his lies are so meticulously constructed that it takes more sleuthing of his language, arguments, and intentions to fully realize that he is a conman. Once you do this, it’s plain to see that he is a disingenuous, conniving man who cherrypicks convenient half-truths and presents them as the full truth. He does this to sow doubt in institutions (the CDC/WHO/etc.) that he sees as hindrances to his brand (and his source of money).
When the virus is that deadly though it would have to be one deadly vaccine to make people not want to take it. When Edward Jenner’s smallpox vaccine came out the argument used against it wasn’t that it was dangerous (since the alternative, variolation, was more dangerous) but that it was unnatural and disgusting to inject cow serum into humans. The people who profited from variolation were probably afraid that the vaccine would make the virus go extinct. Same reason why the mRNA companies want to suppress Novavax.
It’s certainly true that many of these people existed and exploited legitimate concerns with efficacy, safety and ethical legitimacy of lockdowns, vaccine mandates and other technocratic public health interventions.
