- During the Rim of the Pacific 2018 exercise, a live-fire demonstration involving aircraft, a submarine, and land-based assets, including the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System and Type 12 Surface-to-Ship Missiles, successfully sank the decommissioned ex-USS Racine (LST-1191) on July 12 off the coast of Hawaii.

Hahahaha good one.
I was stationed on her in the 80’s. Kinda sad to see.
What ship is this?
oof right in the feels
Sorry for your loss m8
Whaa. 😳What do you mean “ old Ship”
I saw her when I was a17 year old sailor 😳 she wasn’t “old” then !
Of course, I’m in my 60’s now .....🤪😁😁😁😁😁😁😁🤣🤣🤣🤣
@@josefschmeau4682 damnit, you got me there
That ship was hit with missiles, cannons and torpedoes and yet it still floats. That ship impress me.
Nothing special. Loaded with fuel & ammo, this thing would have been ended by the first torpedo.
its a NEWPORT CLASS LST
Ships are more resilient than u think. You can blow a hole on the side of a ship and it'll still be able to float back to port for repairs. The fastest way to sink a ship is with a torpedo because it detonates not by hitting the ship, but right beneath it causing the ship to slightly go airborne and fall back on itself. With the massive weight of the ship crashing down it breaks the ships keel and everyone is sol lmao.
that because the missil is made in america, not russian lololll
Torpedoes are really the only weapons meant to sink a ship quickly because it breaks its keel. Missiles are meant to damage internal workings and kill crewman
I live in Honolulu, about 5 minutes away from Pearl Harbor where they have all the exercises going on. At night during RIMPAC you can hear ship cannons and weapon fire out to sea, it's just that loud.
J. Vinton uno dakine😂
Lucky
I lived near a army base where they fired the guns on Friday night. My aunts, uncles, and cousins used to complain when they visited about the noise. I was so used to it I slept through it without being awaken, but not our visiting extended family...
Sound of Freedom
Nice i want to visit honolulu one day
Sad to see my old home, but good to see that She did not go under easy. I think with our damage control teams (rated #2 in the Pacific Fleet) we could have kept her up.
wish they would find something else to practice with. USS Barbour County, LST 1195 kept me safe for 2years 6 mos. hate to see T's end this way. wasn't the Racine in the movie "gray lady down" ?
Sad to see it sink after all the work we did to keep it afloat. I actually had a piece of the ships hull. It was the hole they cut out below the waterline to make a repair from causeway bump in San Diego harbor. I lost the piece. it was in my house when Katrina hit, tore the top off my house (2 story) and lost everything. Got out in 78, The Racine was my first and last ship. 2nd Division.
AzogNewOrleans we cut a causeway cable on Silver Strand Coronado. It did not damage the hull though. The vertical prop turbulence did hole the ship in 3 Aux. We shored her up, steamed back to port and put in a new piece of Hull.
Robert Schaeffer I think we could...cut off the bow, seal the transverse bulkhead, allow free communication in the tank deck and have her towed by the stern. Kinda like how they did the USS San Francisco at Guadalcanal.
Chris Perry I agree with you !
For anyone wondering, rockets at the beginning are rockets launched from HIMARS, not guided missiles. They're meant to be fired into a general area to create confusion and panic, not hit a needle on its head like a missile.
C.K. Holliday that explains them missing the first 20 shots
@Balance Level It's training.
Yes, the first rockets also consume defecting missiles and weapons.
@Balance Level you are right to call bullshit. HIMARS is a rocket used by the US Army and Marine Corps. We definitely are not in the confusion business...They are area impact weapons designed to destroy defeat area targets.
@@twright3802 note what you said there "area targets" as in a large area that doesn't need high precision to have good effect.
Psh that ship wouldn’t have sunk if there were people with flex tape on there

Whew, Thought for a second the Saudis showed up to get a sneak attack in at 2:50.
They would be able to get away with that like always
@@mirzahamzabaig5667 Sadly, as long as they're living on top of our oil, I don't see that changing any time in the near foreseeable future either.
@@612southside
I would say the way they manipulate their exports to their support is much more dangerous.
@@mirzahamzabaig5667 Few truer words have ever been spoken "Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely." A Capitalist by birth I see them for what they really are; Literally the antithesis of Capitalism, they're market manipulating, price fixing Communists proficient in the art of blackmail and extortion, who currently hold the world largest economy prisoner. A prime example of why there can be no room for monopolies inside of a true market economy.
@@612southside
Indeed.. sadly the idea of a "true market" cannot exist in our current world with such corruption.ii it's do or die.
I love a good old torpedo hit and how it lifts it and breaks it in two.
cool and sad at the same time for me, I have been on that vessel a couple of times, once while under its own power while it was still a commissioned ship.
hero hnl exactly.
hero hnl artificial reef
2:05 NOW THATS A LOT OF DAMAGE
Rest in peace old friend who ever your where it's not just some ship

"You sunk my battleship"
I was on the Ogden LPD5 and sailed along side the Rachine many times.
Thank you for providing the Old Warship for training.
Government: "Don't litter in the ocean or we will fine you"
Also Government:
It’s gonna be a artificial reef, probably just r/wooshed myself.
Took two forces to take it out. That must be one tough old ship 😃
That's an old LST with the bow ramp. When I was a captain in the Marine Corps deployed aboard amphibious ships in 1975, I was CO of Troops aboard the USS Tuscaloosa (LST) during the assault on Koh Tang Island in May 1975. While we were not committed to the assault, we were off shore and were ready (weapons and ammunition had been issued to all Marines) to conduct an amphibious assault if so ordered. I had my company of Marines, tanks, amphibious tractors, artillery, 81 mm mortars, and other heavy weapons that the helicopter assault force didn't have.
I was also aboard the USS Denver (LSD) during the evacuation of Saigon in April 1975. There were so many ships involved that it looked like the D-Day landings in Normandy. An experience I'll never forget.
I was also a platoon commander in Vietnam 1968-1969. Hard to believe that was over 50 years ago.
Anyway, I'm sorry to see the old girl go down, but at least she went down training warriors for future combat. Not a bad way to go.
Poor ole girl may she rest at sea!!
Any one else here from Smarter Every Days video on torpedoes and how he was in a helicopter above the ship because hes a delveopmental weapon tester?
Memories of rocking n rollin in both smooth and rough seas.
RIMPAC also includes Australian forces. The final blow for this 1st sinking at SINKEX 2018 was actually delivered by the first firing of a Harpoon from a RAAF P-8A Poseidon
This blows my mind, that was my ship in 1973
Thats an LST, I was a reservist on the uss boulder.
I served aboard the Racine till 1978. We did a double West Pack when our replacement ship caught fire. Sad to see her go. 2nd Division.
God bless you, Racine.......
As Indiana Jones would say: "THAT BELONGS INA MUSEUM!!"
Old is Gold 💪
Target practice on an old ship nicely done
It would be cool if there was an under water shot of it sinking
next time, please test XASM-3 air-to-ship missiles.
Back in the 40s during the war in the Pacific, i highly doubt that the US nor Japan could ever imagine that someday, they would be side by side sinking a warship rather than sinking eachothers.
So that's how you spend million dollars for a 1000 dollar work
It would be awesome to have Go Pro footage on the ship.
This upgrade of Battleships is great!
RIP
A game of battleship between US and Japan.
Sparxzilla YES xD
Last time that ended in US sailors dying in their sleep and Japan getting nuked.. twice.
Anyone know what LST this is? I was on the USS Peoria LST 1183 in 78-79. I believe she too was sunk as a target ship.
Beautiful show. Now they are taught a new generation will learn something new weapon.
Well that didn't seem like a very effective system. The salvo of missiles looked impressive when they were launching but there were so many misses on a stationary target. Disappointing to say the least.
because HIMARS was not designed to engage maritime targets. This is just a test whether rockets are effective against ships. And btw the NSM missile that hit the ship did not carry a live warhead
It wasn't the missiles mate...those were HIMARS...
hmm "not designed to engage maritime targets" and then "this is just a test whether rockets are effective against ships" .... Isn't it obvious already what are we testing, that's like using grenade against tank and then expecting something else, what's the point of even doing that when you can already tell what likely outcome is going to be ?
Over Opinionated Bogan 0:19 rockets - yes. All the other launches shown are missiles. Ssm12 land based missiles.
Dmin: No, it is NOT obvious what different weapons systems can do that they were not designed to do. It is called "Thinking outside the box"; Being creative. Go back to bed.
SmarterEveryDay did a video on this he is the one who filmed a majority of the impacts
That ship from the top view almost looks like a battleship at first. I might be heart broken if they sink their own historical battleship
Good practice for chinese ship in the future.
They missed 5 times good thing it was not war time
Old is Gold
Very good video 👍👍👍
Nobody :
The ship that get sink as Japanese anime girl : thank you for all of memories... Admiral ^^
Amazing but as beautiful of a sight it is to see a ship come into or leave a port, it is as sad to see one sink. I hope she was a good ship for those onboard.
Most rockin' and rollin' ships that ever floated.
I did a lot of puking on that SOB
that ship is not made in china.....period

That bow shot was brutal!
Accurate and deadly!
😂
Cool asf ive been wanting to see anti ship missles in real action
Hit by missiles and Torpedos but still floating this ship was like my Grand Father .
its a sitting target for god's sake what's with all those misses at the start?
If you want to see what it's like to miss a stationary sea target. Put a Tupperware container in a pool then stand back about 20-30 feet and try and shoot it one handed with a BB Rifle.
-Have someone shake the pool slightly. (This imitates waves the other vessle is bobbing on)
-Aiming with one hand shoot your BB rifle from 20-30 feet away. (This simulates the slight, mostly accountable, bobbing of your own ship and the distance of a few miles.)
You'll probably miss a few times before you land a hit. Or maybe you're really good at aiming one handed. Hopes this helps a bit.
HIMARS Rockets are not guided and not really designed to hit small targets.
Philippine cannons
No Brand YT Use
LMAO!
@@753238 Lol have you even see how vintage Philippine ships fire? Even with vintage turrets they could fire at targets accurately.

I was on an east coast 6th fleet LST 1983-1985 but it's still sad to see the ex Racine sunk.
You can see the Racine in the newer version of Pearl Harbor. When the mustangs are flying around they show them passing her twice, even though she wasn't even around then. The Racine was mothballed in Pearl.
Too many misses on a non protected ship is not good,
tanweer hussain Those are unguided rockets that arent made for hitting small targets
Purpose?
msvo24 training
ap7 K5, affirmative
A cheap way toget ridof it. It is at cost of the environment, this dont belong in the ocean!!!!!
actually, all fluids are removed before the attack and this ship will become an artificial reef
Voornaam Achternaam idiot clearly no knowledge just want to say his stupid opinnion.. patetic millenial
Just imagine how many lives this warship has slayed! Now she is being slayed.
That's no way to send a ship to its final place..disrespectful to the service it rendered for the nation..once a home for 100s of Sailors.. Sad to see it go that way..
Respect old war equipment
Even though naval ships go out to sea. Watching how close you bring your ship into other territory is valid information. As this video sets its example
As another concept of crossing enemy lines comes into action why spend so much time and money on naval battleships while other targeting countries send missiles such a distance...
Will you test that on Chinese war ships
The Racine was once a well kept clean looking ship.
It's kind of sad to see her being sunk. I did a WestPac on her back in 1980.
Reminds me of footage from the Falklands War
Woww very amazing technology now
This newest Battleship for PS5 is crazy realistic. Ima definitely buy this game at launch.
Pretty sure Smarter Every Day was there in that same helicopter to film this in slow motion.
What was the first strike where stuff was impacting 100 meters around it multiple times? Artillery that did not hit?
Good thing they was not shoot back
ship execution
Don't know why but I was expecting it to break from the middle and go down like a Titanic.
So you get rid of decommissioned ships by sinking them?
Keren bossd
Took a lot of missiles and shells to wreck that things, now imagine how long it would've taken if it were a battleship
Now THATS ALOTTA DAMAGE!!
How can you miss a sitting target. Hate to see ya hit a moving tarket
wow
As long as our adversaries stay still we have a chance!
Ahh man... That torpedoe did the work... God damn...
Good👍 video
Atleast she didn't go down without a fight
Good job, guys!

One tuff ship
Imagine the history and the story that was made bc of that old warship.
nice
So this is how you say goodbye to a naval ship
