  • PACIFIC OCEAN (July 12, 2018) Live fire from aircraft, a submarine, and land assets participating in the Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) exercise sink the decommissioned ex-USS Racine (LST-1191) July 12 in the Pacific Ocean. Twenty-five nations, 45 ships, five submarines, about 200 aircraft and 25,000 personnel are participating in RIMPAC from June 27 - Aug. 2 in and around the Hawaiian Islands and Southern California. The world's largest international maritime exercise, RIMPAC provides a unique training opportunity while fostering and sustaining cooperative relationships among participants critical to ensuring the safety of sea lanes
and security of the world's oceans. RIMPAC 2018 is the 26th exercise in the series that began in 1971. (U.S. Navy video/Released) 180712-O-N0842-9001

I spent over 3 yrs serving on Uss Racine, it was hard to see this. She always brought us home safe and sound.

Sad to see her go. But, my memories of and aboard former USS Racine LST-1191 live on as always. I had the fortune of attending her commissioning in July 1971 as the son of her first commanding officer, Daniel W. Anderson. I later sailed to Lima, Peru and Valparaiso, Chili aboard her and became a shellback while crossing the equator. What a time that was!

Sad to see her go. By brother served aboard the Racine and I took a family cruise on her as a teenager. One of the reasons I chose to join the Navy.

I look at her and think of all those that served aboard her. I've been called weird and strange for saying things like this but did the last to disembark thank her? We or at least I, become attached and think this way at times.
Rest easy Racine, your sisters have the watch.

My dad served onboard her in the early 70's. She was his last duty station before retiring.

Not sure what made think of the Racine today. While watching the video I'm thinking about all the times I'd sat on that fantail or stood on the signal bridge during a typhoon. About all the graffiti and artwork on the bottom of all those bunks. About winning 3K on a game of Acey Ducey and losing it 2 minutes later. And about all the Sailors and Marines who served on her that are no longer with us. The Racine was my second West Pac (1980) out of Hawaii and my first experience on a flat bottom boat. Wouldn't you know it, I was on mess duty right out of Pearl Harbor. Fun Times!
We were on liberty in Geraldton, Australia when the hostages were taken in Tehran.
Liberty was cut short, next 57 days circling the Gulf.

absolute tough old war wagon, she took all of that aerial bombardment and then got lifted up for a keel snap by the torpedo by the sub and STILL was working to get her men safely off loaded and was doing nothing to defend herself, that empty ship was so well built it's always sad to see them go, but better to go like that then a rusty scrapyard, her last duty station with her boots on

I don’t think most people realize that some nations build the absolute hell out of warships. Not everything painted grey can take that kind of abuse.

I will never forget the first time I saw a LST offloading right on a beach or an LCAC coming ashore.
It still amazes me that the US military allows boys that are just barely men operate multimillion dollar pieces of equipment..
You will see this no where in the civilian world..
