I served on the WASP, SAR det retired rescue swimmer. If you look in the video you’ll see the helicopter on the flight deck you can barely make out BR on the tail with a little octopus HC-8 which turned into HSC-28 outta Norfolk Va!
Damn, a lot of respect for rescue swimmers. Excuse my ignorance, but were you a detachment from the Coast Guard or do PJs perform rescue swimmer roles as well? Massive respect either way, I used to watch Coast Guard rescue swimmers practice all the time here in Rhode Island as a kid and my dad did a ton of work with the PJs, heard a lot of stories.

my dad served on the USS Wasp 2 times in his career. He was 19 the first time as a Diesel worker and he just finished his second time in June. He was the Chief Engineer. The Wasp was his final ship. I could not be more proud of him
I visited the USS Midway June of last year for my birthday. It was a really awesome experience and was really cool learning about the history of the carrier

Got to say..this is really neat! She did an excellent job with the tour. I recall the first ship I went on, walking round and round..looked like a lost pup 😂I am Marine & Navy bias so this was a great jog to memory.
Idk if this is the same uss wasp that served during the golf war since there has been a couple wasps, but my dad served for 6 years on that ship, more than likely!
My father did, too. He had a Wasp Association cap he would never let me wear. But years after his death in 2001, I wore it to an electronics store. As I stood in line to make a purchase I started talking to a young man behind me. I noticed his wife was looking at me. She then screamed, “Look at his cap!” He did and was somewhat shocked when he read Wasp Association. I told him my father had been on the Wasp’s first Pacific cruise in 1944. He said he had been a sailor on the new Wasp’s first cruise.
The Wasp, it’s a amazing ship, crazy memories i have made in there, im still on board but im leaving the command soon but im happy the Wasp became my first command coming into the Navy
You should look up footage of her flooding out and spitting out hovercraft. It's cool to get in close to shore but they don't even have to. The LHD class originally started as a helicopter carrier but has evolved into so so much more. Truly fantastic value for tax dollars.
My son was the NGLO OFFICER for the 1-12 out of Hawaii (simperfi) he got to go on board the USS WASP when they went to ROCKET MANS FRONT DOOR. the boots I am now wearing were worn on that flight deck on that day. DANG IT BOY!!!! GO NAVY and US MARINES. ❤❤❤
I was on the Essex (LHD2) and I know for sure the crew of the wasp getting that ship prepped for all that celebration stuff was in shambles for multiple days lmao

USS Wasp CV-18 and USS Hornet CV-12 did this...this particular USS Wasp was not in service that early.
Most of those were the Hornet. My uncle was a helicopter crewman and helped pick up the skylab 3 and 4 and apollo 14 missions when he was in the Navy.

Been on an LHD on deployment it was fun! But we had a harrier crash on the flight deck and I was on the deck below it, pretty crazy lol
I was stationed on the WASP from 2004 to 2007. Lots of good times and a few bad on that ship.
This was surreal, I was there for fleet week, that is my ship currently
Saw one out of water in San Deigo. Was cool and amazing. Plus saw one being moved into dock by tugs.
Cool to see they do tours when docked ❤
