Phalanx CIWS Close-in Weapon System In Action - US Navy's Deadly Autocannon

- Footage of the Phalanx CIWS Close-in Weapon System in various target practicing exercises.
The Phalanx Close-In Weapons System (CIWS) was developed as the last line of automated weapons defense (terminal defense or point defense) against anti-ship missiles (AShMs), including high-g and maneuvering sea-skimmers. The basis of the system is the M61 Vulcan Gatling gun autocannon.
Consisting of a radar-guided 20 mm (0.79 in) Gatling gun mounted on a swiveling base, the Phalanx has been used by Navies around the world.
The CIWS is designed to be the last line of defense against anti-ship missiles. Due to its design criteria, its effective range is very short relative to the range of modern ASMs, from 1 to 5 nautical miles (9 km). The gun mount moves at a very high speed and with great precision. The system takes minimal inputs from the ship, making it capable of functioning despite potential damage to the ship. I thought that was used to defend against incoming missiles, but with fire power like that makes sense to be able to use it for other things.
I personally would rather see them keep developing the system for incoming missile defense. We have to let the crew have satisfaction of blasting any small boats full of terrorists in a more personal way lol.
CIWS is the last line of missile defense, behind at least five different types of defensive missiles, depending on what you wanna count. Defeating large naval attacks made of tens or even hundreds of missiles at a time takes a multi-layered approach, but Phalanx is still useful for it's flexibility and low cost. It's pretty cheap compared to alternatives like SeaRAM, and it does okay against a wide range of targets.
Initially designed for slow moving rocket artillery attacks and missiles. Will have a hard time engaging supersonic threats, and as stated is the last line of defense. Very good at engaging small mobile targets on sea and in air.
The ship version doesn't need self-destructing ammunition too, those bullets can be optimized against the target.

R2D2 with a hard on. Still impressive after all these years
Good example of just how hard it is to hit a pitching and rolling target that's constantly changing direction from a firing system that's pitching and rolling as well. It's incredibly hard...even with "automated" systems. Just imagine that, instead of a skiff, it's an anti-ship missile coming at oh...mach 2 or so. The speed of tech advancement is nuts...even since Desert Storm.
You'd think something that advanced could take the pitch of the boat into account, but it just seems to spray bullets in a rather inaccurate way, better used on larger targets the dinghy just gets missed over and over, I'm a bit disappointed
@@MikeWalls7829 yeah, I agree. One would think that the gyroscopes on those weapons would be accurate enough. It's obviously a lot harder than most of us think. But, the "hit" accuracy has improved immensely over the years. Downsized smart weapons and ammunition are improving quickly as well. Laser weapons are already in use...on a limited basis. Lol, as bad as I hate complex mathematics, I'd be pretty useless. So, such is best left for others.
@@drew65sep I don't think it's the barrel accuracy either cos you see it spraying in defined lines, I think the robot is just programmed to be spraying that way, it does what it's told... I think a human could have aimed it better to get the dinghy at least. Good for fighting incomming missiles or the likes when it has an advantage of processing speed and vision though.
