Phalanx CIWS Close-in Weapon System In Action - US Navy's Deadly Autocannon

  • Footage of the Phalanx CIWS Close-in Weapon System in various target practicing exercises.
The Phalanx Close-In Weapons System (CIWS) was developed as the last line of automated weapons defense (terminal defense or point defense) against anti-ship missiles (AShMs), including high-g and maneuvering sea-skimmers. The basis of the system is the M61 Vulcan Gatling gun autocannon.
Consisting of a radar-guided 20 mm (0.79 in) Gatling gun mounted on a swiveling base, the Phalanx has been used by Navies around the world.
The CIWS is designed to be the last line of defense against anti-ship missiles. Due to its design criteria, its effective range is very short relative to the range of modern ASMs, from 1 to 5 nautical miles (9 km). The gun mount moves at a very high speed and with great precision. The system takes minimal inputs from the ship, making it capable of functioning despite potential damage to the ship.

CIWS is the last line of missile defense, behind at least five different types of defensive missiles, depending on what you wanna count. Defeating large naval attacks made of tens or even hundreds of missiles at a time takes a multi-layered approach, but Phalanx is still useful for it's flexibility and low cost. It's pretty cheap compared to alternatives like SeaRAM, and it does okay against a wide range of targets.

    • @CosmoMomen

I'd hate to have the job of cleaning that puppy after it's been fired! You'd go thru a ton of patches getting all 6 barrels clean and free of flowing

Probably better then cleaning shot guns for the range I work at

The required maintenance after shooting was a lot more involved than just punching the barrels with CLP.

Sounds like hell. That and I can't imagine reloading the thing while in a rough sea and your ship's VLS is firing missile after missile and your DP guns are firing away, telling you you better hurry the fuck up before another one gets too close!

@@oron61 , im thinking make a Phalanx that has removable barrels that you can quickly swap out dirty ones with fresh ones.

Problem is how heavy those things are. And if you use a machine to do it you might as well rebuild the CIWS as part of the ship's total combat system instead of an independent search & destroy missile killer. The thing has to be reloaded manually bc is is designed to sit on top the roof with nothing but a control panel and power supply, to save space. Give it a reloader and barrel swapper, and now you might as well build a new system altogether.
