    Great real-world demo! To me, the BE-OD sounds like Van Halen 1, and the DS sounds more like VH II.

    Hi Jay, love your Friedman reviews and love your personality. I bought the Dirty Shirley pedal based on your reviews - I like the mid control and don't need the level of gain that the BE OD offers. Love the Dirty Shirley for live (I play old school punk rock) and recently bought the Smallbox pedal which I think suits me better for recording (not quite such a thick sound and leaves more room in the mix for overdubs...). I was hoping that you would do a review of the Smallbox - any chance this will happen in the near future. Best wishes, John.

    wow both pedals without incredible! The Dirty I imagine it for more pafid sinids with steroids in a good les paul and the be od sometimes I think it is more for hard sounds .. if I am wrong correct me, but there is a little loud or sharp but with a first-line category. I give the Dirty one more point, but I love both ... how would be od walk in more paf tones? regards!!

    hi man nice review, i was wondering, which one would be better to drive the front end of an amp to tighten a little the sound, i use a 6505 mh but im planning to buy a marshall dsl 100 hr too, so i think i will need a drive or something to get really high gain tones with it. which one would you recomend? or should i get a tube screamer and go safe with it?

    • @jayguitar
      @jayguitar  5 лет назад +1

      Thanks so much Andres 😊 🙏 if you're planning to run it into a drive channel on either of those amps then I'd say go with the Tube Screamer or the Friedman Buxom Boost as they will do a better job of tightening the bass and response of the amp. These pedals are essentially preamps in themselves. So if you're gonna use it for the main drive sound and want a tight sound then the BE-OD for sure 😊 Much tighter and more modern tone 😊 Hope that helps man! Have an amazing day!!!

  •  4 года назад +1

    Great video, quick question. Where are the internal trim pots set on each pedal? Just got the BE-OD Deluxe and I have the pots almost all the way down. I have a DS arriving today or tomorrow and a Buxom Boost too. Guess I sort of went all in with the Friedman pedals.

      @jayguitar  5 лет назад

      Hey Shawn, good Q - from memory, the BE-OD trim pot is around 11 o'clock - on the Deluxe I don't know as I don't have one but guessing the high gain channel is at 11 and the lower gain maybe around 8 or 9 o'clock. The DS I can't remember if I have opened the back and adjusted to be honest! lol 😊 I imagine its about half way on that one 😊 Hope that helps dude! Have an amazing day!!!

    Great shootout Jay! I currently have both on my pedal board. I lean on the BE-OD for higher gain stuff, and us the DS for mid-gain situations. It difficult to choose between the two! Of course by having both I don't really push the potential of either pedal. Awesome playing, as always! \m/

    Dear Jay, many thanks for those great videos about Friedman pedals. I also have the Amp1 and Blubox and wonder for the moment which pedal will fit better. As the Amp1 has already 3 drive channels I guess it makes more sense to buy the BE OD instead of the Dirty Shirley. How would you describe the differences between Dirty Shirley and Vintage/Classic Channel of the Amp1. For my taste I always reduce the lower mids between 300-400Hz and increase @100 Hz in Cubase to get a decent 80/90 sound from the Amp1. I would be happy to hear your two cents. Many thanks in advance!

    • @jayguitar
      @jayguitar  6 лет назад

      You're most welcome dude 😊 Oh very very cool about the AMP1 and BluBox! The different to my ears would be that the DS sounds more like a modded plexi tone - its 'that' amp from the 80s hair metal ear! kinda like the Vintage channel on the AMP1 but with a serious makeover 😊 Dave Friedman's ability to dial in the EQ is just sensational! I find that most of the time, I record with the pedals and I'm done - no or very little EQ (maybe add some top end to the lead sound via the Maag EQ4 plugin) and I'm ready to mix. With the AMP1 I sometimes need to EQ a touch more. Both great tones 😊 Hope that helps man! Any other Qs please feel free to ask 😊 Have an amazing day!!!

    They both definitely have their strengths depending on what you're going for tonally and stylistically! Phenomenal sounding pedals. Jay, my question to you is... how are they in the mixing stage? Do you find one of them easier to seat in the mix than the other in a particular role, do either have certain quirks to work around or eq bands to target? They seem to translate really well in your mixes! Which leads me to another question... are you planning to do any production-related videos in the future??

    • @jayguitar
      @jayguitar  6 лет назад

      Hey bro, you doing well? Yes both amazing pedals 😊 you know, both are super easy to place in the mix. You’re actually hearing just the pedals, no EQ. Usually I end up doing some cut or boost - and for lead I usually add a tiny bit of top end with the Maag EQ4 (the high freq one notch and the Hair Band at about 5) just to bring them out a touch more - but that’s all. Both pedals are really well judged. The DS has a fuller, thicker tone - the BE a tighter tone so I not choose one over the other depending on application - 80s style, then DS, metal or modern rock BE 😊 no plans to do production videos as there are some amazingly good channels out there. I may do some of Mixbus 32c at some point though as that is totally amazing! Have an awesome day 😃

    • @jayguitar
      @jayguitar  5 лет назад +1

      Hey Pal, thats a great Q!!!! Well, the BE-OD can definitely nail the GNR tone!!!! I did a video on that - ruclips.net/video/L9B15_iohfg/видео.html - the Dirty Shirley is probably a little more suited to the tone and vibe though as it is a little more gnarly an vintage sounding. Both will work great though 😊 Hope that helps! Have an amazing day!!!

    • @jasonjohnson4170
      @jasonjohnson4170 6 лет назад

      Yes...several Friedman's pedals have made the list for my future pedal board. When i was young, I used a DS-1, chorus and DOD double delay through my set-up, which changed several times throughout the years to better my sound. Money was the issue back then so I never had the cash for tube anything. Never had an official pedal board either...just pedals on the floor. Have been an effects rack guy for quite a long time for the ability to pre-program presets and have done the modeling rack thing since technology improved to include modeled amps and cabs. Have several decent racks now that satisfy me there. Now it's time to include a great amp head and pedal board into my collection. Been looking at Friedman pedals as a couple of them has stood out. Can't wait. Thanks Jay

  • @robpayne9500
    @robpayne9500 6 лет назад +4

    I have both. The dirty Shirley is more flexible with the gain and has more mids. You can go a vintage sound to heavy quick. The b.e.od has more of a modern scooped sound and the compression is a bit different.The b.e. od is a distortion pedal not a true od and you can't really tame the gain even with the internal trim. Quality pedals I can't see getting rid of either one.

When I can afford it I think I will buy the BE OD as all round it is great ,and they both sounded fab in the mix. I must admit though ,lead tones are amazingly liquid on the DS
    I also think it would be great for doing Slash solos . My heart does lie with the BE OD though. I will let you know which one I get when I do and see if my opinion changes before I get it . I think Inwill be watching this video again a few times.
    Best wishes Jay ,keep rockin 🤘🏻🕶🤘🏻🎸☠️☠️☠️☠️

    Jay, I love you and I love your demo's :) the Dirty Shirley takes it here for me! I play pedals through a Fender '68 Deluxe Reverb Reissue and I'd like to hear you run them through a clean tone like that sometime. Thanks Jay!

      Thanks so much man! Really appreciate it! 😊 🙏 Thats a cool Q! And you know, my AMP1 clean channel is actually based on a Fender Twin - Thomas Blug's own one - so the response and tone would be pretty similar to what you're hearing on my videos 😊 The speaker cab will make a difference but basic tone will be the same 😊 Have an amazing day dude!

      Jay, my friend, I heard you say "back for more" toward the end of this video.. I hope you do a video of "Back For More" by Ratt because I think you would nail it with these tones..! :) Thanks in advance that!
      A quick request please :)
      I'm playing to through a Fender '68 Fender DRRI set fairly clean on the"Custom" channel with pedals for dirt, usually no more than volume of the amp on three - your "clean" sound was brilliant, but a little "crunchier" than my overall base tone. I'm wondering, would it be possible for you to do a video of you using both of these pedals with a cleaner tone through you're Amp1?
      Love you and love your playing - it's a gift to all of us :)

    Woooooww Jay.
    Because this pedal is called Dirty Shirley ??? .......... how many questions do I have today (hahaha).
    Seriously, the BE-OD sounds better to me in the rhythms and the Shirley better in the solos, the latter in the rhythms sounds to me with less punch. But that is to my ear.
    Anyway, if I had to decide for one, I would not know which one. I need more Jay!
    Great Video and very good comparison Jay

    • @jayguitar

      Hey Jordi, I hear you! Such a difficult choice to make! Yes the DS is rounder - the BE has more edge and that translates as that extra punch: both amazing pedals - love playing them. And me too.... love that name... Dirty Shirley 😃 have an amazing day dude 😃

    Both are noisy af. Replaced my BE for the DS because of the mid knob. Loved the sound of the BE for rhythms and love the DS for lead stuff. What I find strange is that I loved the BE more for lower gain stuff because of the fairly flat eq. DS is to my opinion more versatile but its not necessarily better than the BE, it really depends on the tone you're aiming for.

    • @jayguitar
      @jayguitar  6 лет назад

      Very cool and very true about the tone thing 😊 Definitely depends on which tone you're aiming for. Recently got the BE-OD and tried it in front of my Marshall's lead channel. I didn't really care for it with that application, even with the trim pot rolled way down...BUT I love the sound you get with the BE-OD in conjunction with the AMP 1's clean channel. So now I'm considering getting the AMP 1! Great video man, both pedals sound great in your hands.

    • @jayguitar
      @jayguitar  6 лет назад +1

      Thanks man! Yeah I find that the pedal works best with a really clan channel - that way it gets to do it's own thing, rather then as a cascading gain stage 😊 AMP1 is so cool! I love it. Just finishing a video about it that will be out later this week 😃 enjoy and have an amazing day!

    Shirley is more of a 70s sound. More high end, with the BE-OD being more of a 90s/Cantrell design

    I think most people would say that a lot of distortion pedals like a clean amp. In my experience, I've also noticed that distortion pedals do not sound good into an amp that is breaking up just a little bit. I think that your video just proved that the BEOD and the DS can not just handle an amp that is crunching up a bit, but actually sound damn good doing it. Would you agree?

    • @jayguitar
      @jayguitar  4 года назад +1

      Glad you enjoyed it Jay! Yes similar experience - I always try to run a distortion into a clean channel for two reasons - more clarity as you mentioned, and also because I want the distortion to do the heavy lifting when I’m using one! Lol! But yes the BE and DS handle being stacked on top of a little bit (and often more) drive on an amp. Retains its clarity and definition 😊 have an amazing day man!

    Thanks for the review. I have the BE-OD mainly for the 80's sounds. That's some amp breakup that I hadn't considered, I'm going to try it out.
    Do you remember where you had the internal pots set to?
    I thought maybe the BE-OD would compliment my Amp Tweaker Tight Metal Jr. but they don't go together at all. I'm considering using two BE-ODs one for chunky rhythm and and the other for leads. Perhaps I should get the DS and use that for the rhythms. So many choices.
